MALCOLM GOULD

August 17, 2004

MALCOLM STANLEY CAMPBELL GOULD (STAN GOULD) Malcolm Stanley (Stan) Campbell Gould, beloved husband of Ellen Gould of Hamiota, MB, died peacefully at the Hamiota District Health Centre, Hamiota on Sunday, August 15, 2004 in his 98th year. Stan is survived by his wife Ellen Gould; daughter Doreen Gould; son Dr. Fred (Donna) Gould; son the Rev. Earl (Joyce) Gould; daughter-in-law Shirley (Jack) Codd; grandchildren, Dickson (Judy) Gould, Dr. Lisa Gould (Dr. Richard Leight), Jason Gould (Sarah Eyton), Crystal, Tracy, Donald Gould, Heather Codd; great-grandchildren, William, Richard, David, Stefan, Anthony, Bronwyn, Tracilynn; brother-in-law Alvin (Mary) Hill; and many relatives including nieces and nephews. Stan was predeceased by his parents, Frederick (F.J.) and Ellen (Ella) Gould; sister Mary (Don) MacKay; sister Jean (Robert) Cumming; sister Winnifred (Charles) Dovell; brother Dan (Marion) Gould; brother Dwight Gould; sister Grace Gould; sister-in-law Dorothy Hill; brother-in-law Arnold (Isabel) Hill; and son Dr. Donald Gould (tragically on October 23, 1971). Stan was born icon on the Gould farm (SW 31-11-23) in the RM of Woodworth, two miles south of Kenton on August 25, 1906. To this same farm he brought his bride Louisa Ellen Hill, married November 14, 1934. Stan farmed until his retirement in 1974 but continued to live with his wife Ellen on the farm until moving to Lilac Residence in Hamiota in 1991 and to Birch Lodge PCH in April of this year. As a youth Stan played a cornet in the Kenton Band; he also played the violin, piano, harmonica, and guitar. He was a strong and gifted bass voice in the choirs at Kenton Baptist Church and then the Kenton United Church. Stan was active over his lifetime in church and community. Church involvement, besides choir, included chair of the Board of Stewards, and Elder. Community service highlights for Stan include serving as Chairman of the Manitoba Pool Elevators at Kenton, charter member of the first Credit Union in the RM of Woodworth and its Chairman for many years, and serving as Director and Chairman of the Manitoba Federation of Agriculture District No. 4 through which he made several lifelong friends throughout Manitoba. Stan was a willing partner with wife Ellen in landscaping the Kenton Gould farm grounds such that they won at least one Provincial trophy. Stan was also a reliable partner to Ellen in her Greenhouse Venture, growing and selling bedding plants each spring. This also had the benefit of an annual visit with folks coming from as far as Virden, Shoal Lake, and Rivers to get plants. Stan discovered he had the ability to "witch" for underground water streams with a forked willow branch. His advice was seldom wrong, thus making him keenly sought after by neighbours before drilling a well. Travel included trips to Ontario and the West Coast to visit relatives and the once in a lifetime trip to Britain in 1977 with Fred, Donna and family and Wilfrid and Ivy Heapy. Regular trips were made to Regina to visit Doreen. Even with diminishing eyesight Stan was an enthusiastic and skilled pool player, very much enjoying the company of family and friends whiled playing the game. Indeed, family and friends were central to Stan's life. His infectious laugh, phenomenal memory, love of reading, gracious spirit, and love and gift of storytelling made Stan special. His unassuming presence and genuine love made him a gift to his family and world. He will be profoundly missed by his wife Ellen of almost 70 years. His memory will be cherished by his family and friends. His family invite you to share in celebrating Stan's 98 years of living life to the fullest in a service of worship to be held at the Hamiota United Church, Hamiota, on Friday, August 20 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Glenna Beauchamp presiding with interment following at Rosewood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Brandon, MB. The family of Stan Gould wishes to especially thank Stan's nephew Allan Cumming and his wife Maxine for their friendship and support. Also deep gratitude for all the services, benefits and staff of the Hamiota District Health Centre complex, truly a great service to the region. In lieu of flowers or as a memoriam, those wishing to do so may make a donation in Stan's memory to the Hamiota District Health Centre Foundation Inc., 177 Birch Ave. E, Hamiota, MB R0M 0T0. Campbell Funeral Home, Hamiota in care of arrangements. (204) 764-2744.
