ERNEST LLOYD PARKER Surrounded by his loving family, Ernest Lloyd Parker peacefully passed into the arms of his Saviour on Monday, October 11, 2004. Predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Mary, Myrtle and Margaret; and seven brothers, Warren, Richard, Walter, James, Jeffrey, Wilfred and Russell. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Peggy; children, David, Terry (Suzanne), Susan (Scott) Lougheed and William (Ardith); grandchildren, Graham, Laura, Darryl, Paige, Kelly, Sydney and Emma. Also surviving are his sister Eva Day; brother Tom (Ivy); and many nieces and nephews. Dad was born icon in the Qu'Appelle Valley on December 31, 1918, where he worked the family farm until the outbreak of the Second World War. He enlisted in the Army, being stationed in England and received his commission as a First Lieutenant from Sandhurst military College. While in England, he met and married his wife Peggy and returned to Canada at the end of the war. Shortly after returning to Canada, he joined Massey Ferguson where he started off as a Block Man, taking various posts throughout Western Canada. He and Peggy moved their family to Winnipeg in 1966, when he became the Western District Sales Manager, retiring in 1979. Dad enjoyed many happy times at his hobby farm outside Marquette. He also enjoyed travelling with Peggy, golf, curling and playing bridge with friends. The family would like to thank the care givers at the Deer Lodge Centre, for the compassion shown to our Dad. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow. NORA KATHLEEN PETHYBRIDGE Nora passed away peacefully, in her sleep, on Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at the Boyne Lodge in Carman at the age of 86. She is survived by two brothers, Joseph (Jean) Pethybridge of Carman, MB, Charles Clay (Audrey) of Minneapolis; one sister Eileen (Ken) of Dugald, MB; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Alice and Ed Pethybridge; and one brother Jack in the R.C.A.F in the Second World War. Funeral service will be held from Doyle's Funeral Chapel in Carman on Friday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Harold Kenyon officiating. Interment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery. SCOTT RICHARD PIANA March 15, 1984 - October 11, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic, accidental passing of Scott. Scott will be deeply missed by his parents, Rick and Darlene; sister Kristina; grandparents, Hollis Kinsey and Frank and Elda Piana; special friend Heather; aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Scott was predeceased by his grandmother Teena Kinsey. Scott will be fondly remembered as the boy in red who loved camping, fishing, playing with and walking Sadie, the family dog. His absolute passion was cars. He could be found regularly polishing his pride and joy. He enjoyed talking about and comparing cars with anyone, especially other car enthusiasts. Scott was enrolled in the Metals and Aerospace program at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and attended classes at the Adult Education Centre in Transcona. He worked part time in the produce department at Superstore. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating Scott's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (across from the Mint). Flowers gratefully declined. OLIVER REINHOLD RACH 1920 - 2004 Oliver Reinhold Rach passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Boundary Trails Health Centre. Born in the 1-6 District, Oliver was educated in the Lindal School District. On completion of his education, he joined his parents and brothers in successful farming for over 50 years. Forty years ago he gave up his bachelor hood to marry Mildred Elliot and her family. Oliver enjoyed fishing and hunting but his greatest joy was his work shop and coffee with his buddies. Oliver's sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and his sister. Oliver is survived by Mildred and her family, Shirley and her husband Laurie Langrell of Winnipeg, MB; Caroll and her husband Jerry Pazgaj of Lethbridge, AB; Jack and his wife Sharon Elliot of Lac Du Bonnet, MB. JOHN SIRYJ Longtime Flin Flon resident John Siryj passed away, at the age of 77, on October 12, 2004 at the Flin Flon General Hospital, after a brief illness. John came to Canada from Ukraine in 1930, at the age of three, with his parents and brother. He completed high school in Flin Flon and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in electrical engineering. While at university, he enjoyed singing in the Ukrainian male chorus under the leadership of Alexander Koshetz. Returning to Flin Flon he became a partner in the family business, the Flin Flon Dry Cleaners, and remained with the firm until his retirement. He continued to live in Flin Flon and, over the years, he greatly enjoyed the company of many good friends. John's pastimes included preparing his culinary specialties for his friends, as well as fishing and prospecting. He read widely and loved a good debate. His involvement with the Hapnot Lake Wilderness Project in its early years was an example of his love of the outdoors. John is survived by his nieces Vicky and Darcia, and his sister-in-law Anne. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Katherine; and his brother Michael. According to his wishes, cremation will take place. PAT STEPHANSON Pat Stephanson, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 11, 2004 in Nanaimo, BC with her family at her side. Pat is survived by her sister Peggy (Ken) French; and brothers-in-law, Wayne (Marlene) Stephanson, Phil (Marjorie) Stephanson; nieces, Sherri, Shannon, Ardith; and nephews, Darrell and Timothy. After graduation Pat worked as a secretary in Winnipeg. In 1951 she went to live in London, England for 18 months with Rita (Doward) Nettelbeck. While there she did temp office work and travelled the British Isles and the continent. Returning to Winnipeg in 1960 she met and married David Stephanson formerly of Winnipegosis, MB. The lumber company Dave worked with sent them to Calgary and then to Vancouver. Upon retirement in 1993 they moved to Parksville on Vancouver Island. A memorial service will be held for Pat on Sunday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Sand Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Ave., Nanaimo. Flowers gratefully declined. DOROTHY WOLK It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grand-mother, Dorothy Wolk, October 3, 2004 at the William Booth Special Care Home in Regina. Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Mike Wolk and will be forever remembered by her two sons, Graham (Judy) Wolk and their children, Tracy (Jeff), Jennifer (Stephen), and Michael of Regina, and Dawson (Lynda) Wolk and their children, Dawson of Winnipeg and Cory (Peggy-Sue) of Abbotsford; seven great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kennedy, Matthew, Tatum, Paige, Emily, and Jessica also survive her. Mom graduated from the University of Alberta with her Bachelor of Nursing Degree in 1941. She worked at nursing assignments across various parts of the western provinces until she met the love of her life, Mike Wolk, and started a family in 1943. In 1954, Mom again returned to nursing full time at St. Anthony's Hospital in The Pas and then the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre in 1963 until her retirement in 1981. She loved nursing and was devoted to her craft having gained many friends and associates during this time. Mom was devoted to her family and continued to be a source of inspiration to her children and their extended families. She was supportive and active at school graduations, family events, and sporting activities especially when it involved the grandchildren. The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff of the William Booth Palliative Care Unit and especially to Dr. S. Leibel who showed great caring and compassion for our mother and the immediate family. Your caring and kindness touched us during this period of grief and sadness. Dr. Cline of the Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care Unit and Captain Barbara Brown of William Booth also assisted our mother during this time. Flowers are gratefully declined. MSGR. THE REVEREND DR. ALEXANDER BARAN, Ph.D. The reposed Msgr. Rev. Dr. Alexander Baran was born icon on March 28, 1928, in Koncove, a suburb of Uzhorod in Transcarpathian Ukraine. His mother came from a priestly family and his father was secretary to the last three prime ministers of pre-war Czechoslovakia. Fr. Baran completed his primary and secondary education in Uzhorod. He went on to study at universities in both Prague and Rome. In Rome he completed two doctoral degrees, one in Theology from Urbanianum and the other in History from the Pontifical Oriental Institute. He was ordained to the holy priesthood in Rome by Archbishop IVAN (Buchko) in 1954 and ministered among the Ukrainian immigrants in both the United Kingdom and Belgium. In August of 1961, he arrived in Canada and settled in Winnipeg where he ministered in many of the parishes in the Archeparchy, viz. Holy Eucharist, Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Josaphat, Christ the King, Sts. Peter and Paul, and of course, the Cathedral of St. Vladimir and Olga. Even after his retirement from active ministry, Fr. Baran helped out as needed in various parishes. After having arrived in Canada, Fr. Baran received a Master's degree in Philology from the University of Ottawa. In 1964, he became the chaplain of Obnova, the Ukrainian Catholic Students' Organization at the University of Manitoba. In 1966 he became a full-time professor of history at the University of Manitoba (St. Paul's College) and taught there until he retired in 1991. In addition to history, he taught courses in religion and Byzantine art. He was the author of many scholarly works on e.g.: the history of the Ukrainian Church, the Cossacks, and the Church in Transcarpathia. His articles have appeared in theological and historical periodicals. He was also president of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences (UVAN) in Canada for 10 years. He has been a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh) and served as vice-president of the Ukrainian Historical Society. Msgr. the Rev. Dr. Baran was a member of the Consistory of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg and worked as a vicar of the Archeparchial Marriage Tribunal. He conducted many retreats and missions across Canada. He also assisted Patriarch Josyf Slipyj in editing scholarly publications of St. Clement's Ukrainian Catholic University. In 2004, at the request of the Most Reverend MICHAEL (Bzdel, CSsR), Archbishop of Winnipeg and Metropolitan of all Canada, the "Papal Honour of Chaplain to His Holiness" was granted by Pope John Paul II in favour of the now Msgr. the Reverend Dr. Alexander Baran, in recognition of his distinguished services and dedication to the mission of the Church and to the Archeparchy of Winnipeg. Fr. Baran reposed peacefully in the Lord; death was pronounced at 11:38 Tuesday, October 12. Funeral services at St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., Winnipeg, MB. Anne's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, Gabriel (Gaby) Choiselat, at the age of 86, passed into the arms of his loving Lord and Saviour. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Claire in 1984. He will be sadly missed by his six daughters, Denise (Robert Lambert), Agnes (Bob Dybka), Yolande (Fred Yurchak), Gisele (Paul Johnson), Helene and Celine (Derek Aston); two sons, Renald (Jeannie) and Jean (Jo-Anne); 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Georges and Fr. Joseph; five sisters, Sr. Jeanne, Clemence, Sr. Marie, Sr. Antoinette and Therese. He was also predeceased by his eldest daughter Yolande; his grandson Robby; his son-in-law Olivier; his sister Josephine; his brothers, Marcel, Charlie and Eugene. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16 in the La Broquerie Roman Catholic Church with the interment to follow in the parish cemetery. Anne's Hospital for their kind and compassionate care. Gaby was born icon in La Broquerie on September 17, 1918, where he spent his entire life. He farmed for a few years and then founded La Broquerie Lumber in partnership with his brother, Georges. They worked together until they retired in 1978. After he retired, Gaby and Claire built a cottage at Buffalo Point where they enjoyed fishing and spending time together before she passed away. Gaby continued to enjoy fishing and spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his great love of children, his sense of humour and his generosity. PATRICIA MARGARET DAVIES (HANNA) 1934 - 2004 After a battle with cancer Pat passed away on October 12, 2004. Pat was born icon on November 28, 1934 in St. Vital where she lived all her life with her family. Pat married Bryan in September of 1955 at St. Marks Church and they resided in St. Vital where she was active at Norberry Community Club for years. Pat was a member of the St. Vital Ladies and Curlettes at the St. Vital Curling Club. She spent many a summer at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell at the family cottage with friends and relatives. She also worked alongside Bryan and son William in the family business. Pat is survived by husband Bryan; daughter Pennie-Elin (Len), son William (Kelly), grandchildren, Sidney and Sarah. Pat was predeceased by parents, William and Elin Hanna; stepfather Carl Mueller; sister Geraldine Moore; brothers, William and Wayne Hanna. In accordance with Pat's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Pat's life to be held at 49 Glenview Ave. on Saturday, October 16, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., everyone welcome. Our thanks are extended to the staff at Palliative Home Care.
