Thomas Robert House

Thomas Robert House, a longtime Dolores area resident, passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000. He was 82 years old. Thomas was born on Jan. 6, 1917, in Glasgow, Mont., to Royal Edward House and Edna Grace (Burke) House.

Mr. House is survived by his children and their spouses, Martin and Quarlene House, of Coalgate, Okla., LeRoy and Kris House, of Arvada, Colo., and Helen and Rick Lee, of Dolores; five grandchildren; three brothers, Dick, Wes, and Duaine, all of Montana; and his sister, Ruth Lein, of Elko, Nev.

Arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

James Allen Barrett

Private family services will be held at a later date for James Allen Barrett, a lifelong resident of this area.

Mr. Barrett passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000. He was 80 years old. James was born the son of James E. Barrett and Ida F. (Lawton) Barrett in Cortez on Jan. 5, 1919.

James attended grades 1-12 here in Cortez, graduating from Cortez Union High School. During World War II James served his country in the Army and the Air Force. For 23 months, James was held as a prisoner of war in Germany.

On June 16, 1940, James married Frances Normera Petty in Durango, Colo. They had celebrated 59 years of marriage together.

James was a life member of the Cortez Elks Lodge #1789, a member of the Mancos VFW, and Mancos Lodge of Masons.

Those left behind to mourn his passing are his wife, Frances Barrett, of Mancos; his daughter and her husband, Susan and John Kuenzler, of Cortez; his son, James F. Barrett, of Redding, Calif.; two grandsons, Zane Kuenzler, of Cortez, and Kermitt Barrett, of Ouray, Colo.; three granddaughters, Natasha Reinhard, and her husband, Eric, of Downey, Calif., Alesha Barrett, of Red Bluff, Calif., Corinna Barrett, of Red Bluff, Calif.; former daughter-in-law, Maxine Barrett, also of Red Bluff, Calif.; and two sisters, Eleanor Brandon, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Bee Wright, of Del Mar, Calif. Two brothers, Jack Barrett and Joe Barrett preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions can be made in James A. Barrett's name to the Scott McComb Memorial Scholarship Fund, 827 W. 7th Street, Cortez. Ertel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sue S. Bradley

Memorial services for Sue S. Bradley, a longtime resident of Cortez, were held on Friday, April 28, at the Faith Bible Church with Pastor Mike Thornton officiating.

Sue was born June 26, 1935 in Bedford County, Tenn., to Emmett Solomon and Lorene Conwell Solomon. She died on April 26, 2000, at the age of 64.

Sue married Robert Bradley in Pharr, Texas, on March 28, 1957. She served as secretary for the Cortez Women's Bowling League Association for many years.

Sue is survived by her husband, Robert, of Cortez; her children and their families, Edward L. Bradley of Oklahoma City, Okla. and his children, Steven Allen, Justin Casey, and Ariel Nicole; Melany Bradley of Cortez and her son Edward Allen; and Kenneth A. and Betty Bradley of Cortez and their children, Bobby Vallejos and Johnny Vallejos, as well as a great-grandson, Johnathan Vallejos of Cortez.

She is also survived by her brothers, Ned C. Solomon of Nashville, Tenn.; and Bill Solomon of Shelbyville, Tenn.

Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Patsy (Small) Palmer

Patsy (Small) Palmer passed away on April 21, 2000, at her home in Cortez after a long bout of illness. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, April 27, at 10 a.m. in the Summit Ridge cemetery. Pastor Steve Schwartz will officiate.

Patsy was born on Oct. 21, 1938, above Dolores to Luyza and Ben Small. She graduated from school in Dolores as valedictorian in 1955.

Patsy married Albert Palmer on July 19, 1956. They made their home and raised four boys in Montezuma County.

She is survived by her husband Al Palmer, of Cortez; her four sons, Dan (Kris) Palmer of Washington; Mike (Debbie) Palmer of Yuma, Ariz.; Bill Palmer of Washington; and Bob (Karen) Palmer, also of Yuma.

She is also survived by four granddaughters, Crystal Palmer, April Currie, Jessica Palmer and Ashley Palmer; one great-grandson, Nicholas; three brothers, Gene (Ramona) Small; Frank (Lettie Small), and Bill Small; three sisters, Alta (Les) Phillips; Hazel Goodrich; and Judy (Larry) Byers; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken Funeral Directors are serving the family.

Doris Emma Bauer Thompson

Doris Emma Bauer Thompson, a resident of Crane’s Roost Retirement Center of Aztec, N.M., passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2000. She was 82.

Garveside services were held Wednesday, April 19, at 3 p.m. in the Mancos Cemetery.

Doris is survived by her brothers, Jerry F. Bauer Sr., of Middlefield, Conn.; Herb Bauer of Bend, Ore.; and her sister, Helen Kilgore of San Leandro, Calif.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Esma Rickner; her husband, Howard A. Thompson; son, Klinton and sister, Phyllis Viles.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mancos Cemetery District, in care of Forrest Waggoner, P.O. Box 96, Mancos, CO. 81328.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken Funeral Directors served the family.

Raymond Johnson

Raymond Johnson, of Shiprock, N.M. passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2000 in Farmington. He was 59. Services are pending with Kirtland Chapel of Memories, with burial to take place in the Cortez Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was born July 19, 1940, in Shiprock to Navajo John and Grace John. He was a carpenter, and lived most of his life in Shiprock.

He married Fannie Johnson, and had four daughters.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Fannie Johnson; daughters and their husbands, Lorraine Aston (Wilfred) of Shiprock; Renita Johnson-Kee (Cassidy), also of Shiprock; Renee Yabeny (Gerald) of Mesa, Ariz.; and Darlene Johnson (Eric), of Shiprock.

He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Jennifer and Veronica Dixon, and Melissa Benally.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Virginia Yazzie.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name, care of Chapel of Memories, P.O. Box 2188, Kirtland, NM, 87417-2188.

Daniel Garris

Arrangements are pending with the Ertel Funeral Home for Daniel Garris, a longtime resident of this area.

Mr. Garris passed away at his home in Dolores on Thursday, April 20, 2000, at the age of 73. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Dec. 14, 1926.

Leo Poff

Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Leo Poff are pending with the Ertel Funeral Home.

Mr. Poff passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Friday, April 21, 2000. He was 73 years old.

Jessie Henrietta Bright

Jessie Henrietta Bright, 96, passed away April 20, 2000, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos, where she had lived since 1993. Henrietta was a very loving caring friend to many who will truly miss her. At her request, there will be cremation and interment of ashes at Arlington National Cemetery.

Henrietta was born Sept. 8, 1903, in Athens, Ga., to Jessie (Middlebrooks) and Jesse Hoyt Beusse. She graduated Athens High School in 1920; attended Glen Eden in Connecticut, and the University of Georgia where she was a Phi Mu; graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Richmond, Va. She worked as a registered nurse in Virginia and South Carolina hospitals.

In 1937 she married Graham Bernard Bright of Richmond. A former professor at V.P.I. (now Virginia Tech) in Blocksburg, Va., Graham had served in W.W.I and later served in W.W.II. After his death in 1947, she lived and worked in Beckley, W.Va., where she was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Returning to Athens, she was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and most recently, St. Paul's in Mancos.

Preceding Henrietta in death were her parents, Jessie and Jesse Beusse; brother, Thomas C. Beusse; husband, Col. Graham B. Bright; and grandson, Phillip Andrew Steckel. She is survived by her daughter, Rita Graham Bright, and son-in-law, Don Lathrop, of Hesperus, Colo.; granddaughters, Jesseka Zeleike, of Tucson, Ariz., and Julie Wren of Boulder, Colo.; sister, Ruth Beusse, of Athens, Ga. Also by her sister-in-law, Anna Belle Beusse; nephew, Tom Beusse, of Athens; and cousins, Dorothy Hogue Nichols, of Celloden, W.Va., Ann Cabaniss, of Athens, and Tom Greer of Dalton, Ga.

Ertel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Janet E. Caughey

Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Janet E. Caughey will be held Friday, April 21, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Officiating will be Fathers Joseph McGuinness and Bill Nelson. A reception will be held in Hampton Hall at the First United Methodist Church following the services.

Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Thursday afternoon between the hours of 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Janet was born in Cortez, Colo., on June 10, 1934, the daughter of Howard McCutcheon and Mary (Meadows) McCutcheon. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, April 17, 2000, at the age of 65.

In 1952 Janet graduated from MCHS and attended Mesa State College for two years. She worked as a District Court Clerk here in Cortez for 30 years. Service in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church was her most cherished activity. Janet's love for her children and grandchildren was a central factor in her life. She also had a great love for her pets.

Janet leaves behind her loving family; daughter and son-in-law, Luann and Art Meyer, of Cortez; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Susie Caughey, of Dolores; grandchildren, Cody and Kady Meyer, of Cortez, and Kailee and Shelby Caughey, of Dolores; and a sister, Joanne Hanna, of Montrose, Colo.; Louie Caughey, of Cortez.

She is also survived by three nephews, Ronny Hanna, of Phoenix, Ariz., Rick Hanna, of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Roger Hanna, of Grand Junction, Colo.; as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces, and other relatives.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Janet Caughey at the Cortez First National Bank. Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.
