Howard Neil Acott

Howard Acott passed away on Aug. 18, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M., of lung cancer.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Howard’s life is planned for Monday, Aug. 21, from noon on at the Acott residence, 28966 County Road M. No funeral services will be held.

Howard was born in Sterling, Colo., on Sept. 2, 1938. He is survived by his wife, Deanne Acott; sons Neil Acott and wife Doris; and Kirk Acott and wife Kristine, all of Cortez; and daughter Kim Walter and husband Joe of Mancos. Howard will also be missed by his five grandchildren: Amy and Kelly Linman, and Aeron, Kayla and Tell Acott.

A memorial fund in Howard’s name benefiting the San Juan Basin Technical School has been established at Mancos Valley Bank, P.O. Box 450, Mancos CO 81328.

Oda Martin

Funeral services for Oda P. Martin will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Mancos Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Webber Cemetery in Mancos. Bishop Melvin Horrock will be presiding.

Oda was born on Dec. 4, 1917, in Elwood, Utah, the daughter of Niels and Ingaborg (Olsen) Petersen. She passed away at the Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Aug. 17, 2000. She was 82.

Oda is survived by her children: Al Martin of Mancos, Kenneth Martin of Sixes, Ore., Roy Martin of Strasburg, Colo., Tom Martin of Red Bluff, Ore., Dawn Higgins of Cody, Wyo., Pete Martin of Belview, Wash., Dan Martin of Sterling, Ala., and Bill Martin of Port Orford, Ore. She was blessed with 40 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Ester Clay of Fruit Heights, Utah, Rozella Mock of Ore., and Betty Keefer of Ore.

Her loving husband, James Kenneth Martin, preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1972. They were married in Coburg, Ore., in May 1936.

Oda was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mancos where services will be held.

Dessie Mae Hubbs Westfall

Funeral services for Dessie Mae Hubbs Westfall will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, First Ward. Mrs. Westfall passed away on Monday, Aug. 14, 2000 in Cortez at the age of 89.

First Ward Bishopric will officiate. Interment will be in the Lewis Cemetery.

Dessie Mae Westfall was born on Jan. 26, 1911, in Calumet, Okla., to Tom and Emma Brookshier Hubbs.

Survivors include her daughter, Nina Dennison of Idaho; Neoma Jorgensen of Utah; Wanda Westfall of Utah, Olinda Gigliotti of Colorado; and Dixie Kingsbury of Oregon. She is also survived by sisters, Daisy Cox of Mancos; Rosetta Brinkerhoff of Cortez; brother Roy Lee Hubbs of Lakewood, Colo.; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orin K. "Tub" Westfall; parents Tom and Emma Hubbs; brothers Jesse, John Lake, and T.H.; sister Dottie, and a great-grandchild, Tanna Rae Williams.

Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Jeanette "Jackie" Romana Cooper

Funeral services for Jeanette "Jackie" Romana Cooper will be held Tuesday, August 15, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at the Greenmount Cemetery in Durango at 1 p.m. Rosary services are scheduled for Monday evening at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Father Joseph McGuinness will officiate.

Jackie was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sept. 15, 1933, the daughter of Jose Romana and Vivian (Kinnard) Romana.

She passed away at her home in Cortez on Thurs., Aug. 10, 2000.

She was 66 years old.

Jackie had lived in Cortez for the past six years, leaving her home of 20 years in Hesperus. She was a very active and dedicated member of the Catholic Daughters.

She loved ice-fishing and gardening. Jackie was especially fond of the country music oldies and the Grand 'Ole Opry and she attended the B-D Wranglers show every year.

Surviving Jackie are her three daughters, Judy Rhoads of California, Sunshine "Jinx" Stevens of Iowa, and Julie Watkins of Amarillo, Texas; and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Cooper, on June 11, 1989; and by her son, Sonny Wilder.

Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.

David A. Doyal

Memorial services for David A. Doyal, a resident of Dove Creek, will be held Friday, Aug. 11, at the Dove Creek Assembly of God Church beginning at 4:30 p.m. Pastor Marvin Pemberton will officiate.

David was born in Wallace, Ind. On Feb. 28, 1952, the son of Emmett Doyal and Lyla Gertrude (Curtis) Doyal. He passed away at the Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Aug. 7, 2000. He was 48 years old.

David worked as an assemblyman in the window coverings industry. He was an active member of the Dove Creek Assembly of God church.

He leaves behind to mourn his death his loving family; his parents, Emmett and Lyla Doyal of Dove Creek; a sister, Elizabeth M. Klock of Dove Creek; and brother, Bennie Eldon Doyal of Camp Verde, Ariz. His brother, Melvin Jay Doyal preceded David in death. Arrangements are being made through Ertel Funeral Home.

Harold Jantzen

Harold Jantzen, 77, of Beatrice, Neb., passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 7, 1922 at rural Harbine, Neb.

Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 2:30 p.m. at First Mennonite Church in rural Beatrice. Pastors Weldon and Florence Schloneger will officiate, and burial will follow at the First Mennonite Church Cemetery.

He was united in marriage to Anna L. Barnard on April 5, 1945, and was a member of First Mennonite Church and the Men’s Brotherhood at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters Mary (Eldred) Brockemeir; Ruby Doyle of Cortez; grandchildren and their spouses; and a brother, Dale (Lois) Jantzen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry W. and Louise (Ensz) Jantzen.

A memorial has been established to Beatrice Community Hospital Hospice.

Louise A. Sena

Funeral services for Louise A. Sena, a lifelong resident of Mancos, will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Mancos First Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Pastor Bill Fair will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Louise was born in Dolores, Colo., on June 24, 1923, the daughter of Louis Archibeque and Mary P. (Lobato) Archibeque. She passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Durango on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000. She was 77.

In August 1944, Louise became the bride of Jose Adelido Sena. He preceded her in death in 1985. She was very active in the First Baptist Church and the Senior Center. She loved to crochet and tend to her houseplants.

She leaves behind her loving family: daughters and their husbands, Linda and Jim Cahall of Farmington, N.M., Mona and J.R. Hannah of Albuquerque, N.M., Ida and Tino Valesquez of Mancos, Gloria and Johnny Garcia of Mancos, and Christine and Ernie Garcia of Aztec, N.M.; sons and their wives, Larry and Maxine Sena of Layton, Utah, and Max and Rhonda Sena of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Betsy Francois of Socorro, N.M., Bea Brown of Naturita, Colo., Irene Blednick of Aurora, Colo., and JoAnn Newkirk of Texas. A sister, Marion Brewer, preceded Louise in death.

Dylan Kirk Dugan

Funeral services for Dylan Kirk Dugan, son of Lindy and Doug, grandson of Kirk and Kay Kennedy, will be Friday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Dylan is survived by his mother, Lindy Kennedy, stepfather Douglas Hackett, sister Shelby, grandparents Kirk and Kay Kennedy, great-grandparents Christine Applin and Merrill and Raye Kennedy, aunt Leslie Kennedy, and numerous great-aunts, uncles and cousins.

Arrangements are being handled by Ertel Funeral Home.

Joe Lyle Reed

Funeral services will be held for Joe Lyle Reed on Wednesday, Aug. 2, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez. Pastor John Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Ertel Chapel on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Joe Lyle Reed was born to Sheldon Reed and May Ellen (Stevenson) Reed on July 23, 1931, at the family home in Yellow Jacket, Colo. He left this earth on Friday, July 28, 2000, at the age of 69 years.

He was the youngest of nine children, seven boys and two girls.

Joe grew up in the Yellow Jacket area and farmed there for many years. He attended school both in Fairview and Durango, and spent some time in a military academy in Tennessee. Farming and trucking were his favorite professions, and he accomplished many goals that he set for himself.

Joe was a very supportive member of the local Grange, Farmers Union, Southwest Colorado Bean Producers, National Bean Producers, Elks Lodge, the Production Credit Association Board of Directors, Member of the Montezuma County Hospital District Board of Directors, and working toward the McPhee Reservoir.

He was well-known for his big vat of barbecued beans at all community functions. However, his memory will be preserved by his famous "Clorox Jug" to be found at local rain dances and every Fourth of July at Dunton.

Joe loved to camp, hunt, play poker, pitch horseshoes, and planting trees.

On March 25, 1952, Joe married Joyce Roubidoux. To this union, five children were born, raised, and sent on their separate ways.

Joe is survived by his long-time companion, Alice J. Belt of Cortez, as well as his five children, Spark and wife Alesa Reed of Dolores; Sarah and husband Don Crowley of Cortez; Don and wife Sandy Reed of Eagle, Colorado; Ellen and husband Leroy Oliver of Pleasant View; and Dixie and husband Richard Lee of Yellow Jacket. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; as well as a brother, John Reed of Cortez; and sisters, Thelma Duncan of Cortez, and Babe Black of Durango.

Joe was preceded in death by both of his parents as well as five brothers: Orie, Thorton, Clarence, Jack and Bill.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to the Pleasant View Fire Department and the American Heart Fund at the First National Bank in Cortez.

Arrangements are being made by the Ertel Funeral Home.
