Guy Arthur Mixon

A memorial gathering will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pamela Mixon’s house for Guy Arthur Mixon, a former employee at Kroeger’s True Value Hardware, who died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center from complications from liver and kidney failure. He was 44.

Mr. Mixon was born Oct. 31, 1956, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He married Pamela Mixon.

Mr. Mixon loved the outdoors, riding his motorcycle and taking trips to Lake Powell. At one time he owned and operated a roofing business.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela, of Durango; his mother, Melba L. Mixon of Victoria, Texas; his step-daughter Keisha Manning of Corpus Christi, Texas; his brother Wayne Mixon of Tokyo, Japan; two sisters, Glenda Myers and Donna Sanford of Victoria, Texas; and one grandson.

Diane B. Lowall

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango for Diane B. Lowall, a Durango-area resident since 1978, who died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at her home in Ignacio. She was 87.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Lowall was born April 19, 1913, in Wenatchee, Wash., before moving to the Durango area in 1978. She married Gene Lowall on Dec. 16, 1936, in Denver.

Mrs. Lowall worked for Dunn and Bradstreet for many years. She enjoyed painting and gardening. Before moving to Colorado, she lived in Las Cruces, N.M., California and New York.

She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Doscher of Durango and Kathleen Sue Marchant of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1975.

Arthur William Fields

Arthur William Fields died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in Bethany, Okla. He was 94.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Fields was born Nov. 23, 1906, in Russellville, Ky. He married Clarice Bishop in 1930 in Love, Okla.

Mr. Fields was a former resident of Durango.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995.

Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Childers of Tennessee and Merle Kidd of Kentucky; five children, Gayle of Bethany, Okla., Don of Oklahoma City, Okla., Gray of Durango, Phill of Mustang, Okla., and Delia Coy of Little Rock, Ark.; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hunter Funeral Home Chapel with burial at 2:30 p.m. in Foster, Okla., at the Foster Cemetery.

George Donald (Don) Garretson

George Donald (Don) Garretson died of cancer Oct. 4, 2000, in Yuma, Ariz. He was 56.

Mr. Garretson was born Feb. 23, 1944, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. He graduated from Durango High School in 1962. He spent four years in the Army, part of which time he was stationed in Germany.

Mr. Garretson worked in heavy construction, over-the-road trucking and logging in Colorado, Wyoming and Arizona. He was active with the Wheatland, Wyo., Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Survivors include a son, Patrick Garretson; two daughters, Pamela and Paulette Garretson; his mother; three brothers; and a sister.

No services were held.

Elisabeth Mueller Cottell

Elisabeth Mueller Cottell died of natural causes Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 81.

Mrs. Cottell was born June 11, 1919, in Nuremberg, Germany. She married Douglas T. Cottell Oct. 25, 1951, in Lundsberg, Germany.

Mrs. Cottell and her family moved to America in 1981 after traveling widely because of Mr. Cottell’s service in the U.S. Air Force. She and her family settled in Stockton, Calif. Mrs. Cottell lived in Durango for the last five years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas T. Cottell, in 1987.

Survivors include three daughters, Friederike K. Biggs of New York, N.Y., Elisabeth Peterson of Durango and Roberta Edmison of San Jose, Calif.; and two grandsons, Christopher B. Kemp of Los Angeles and Alexander Kemp of Chicago.

No services are planned at this time.

Ursula Wahl

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Lutheran Church for Ursula Wahl, a restaurant owner, who died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center after a 12-year struggle with congestive heart failure. She was 79.

The Rev. John Knutson will officiate at services.

Mrs. Wahl was born April 8, 1921, in Leipzig, Germany. She married Nick Wahl, who died in January 1989. Together they operated the Edelweiss Restaurant north of Durango for many years. Her German cooking was famous with many people.

She is survived by two daughters, Brigitte Wahl of Durango and Renate Wahl of Liberty Corner, N.J.; a sister, Sonja O’Connell of Morris Plains, N.J.; a brother, Werner Liskow of Saddle Brook, N.J.; two nieces; and two nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ursula Wahl Memorial Fund c/o Wells Fargo Bank, P.O. Drawer K, Durango, CO 81302.

Debra L. Elston

Private family services were held Friday, Feb. 16, at Mercy Medical Center for Debra L. Elston, who died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 36.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Elston was born Dec. 1, 1964, in Oklahoma City. She was attending the Hadley School for the Blind. She loved baking, gardening, cooking and quilting.

She is survived by her husband, Lonnie Scholten of Durango; a daughter, Alisa Choate of Durango; a sister, Mari Williams of Kingfisher, Okla.; a grandmother, Marie Lake of Watonga, Okla.; a brother, Raymond Choate of Red Oak, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

Gary Paul Welsh

Gary Paul Welsh died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at his home in Durango. He was 47.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Welsh was born in 1953 in Manhattan, a borough of New York City. He was married to Jean Ray Welsh for 15 years.

Mr. Welsh moved from Houston in 1991 to make his home in the mountains of Colorado. He worked as a construction worker, and was a member of the United Steel Workers.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Welsh of Durango; his mother, Carmen Welsh of Houston; his daughter, Maritza Welsh of New York City; his brother, William Welsh of New York City; two sisters, Geraldine Welsh and Lantress Welsh, both of New York City.

No services are planned at this time.

Glen Arthur Ott

Glenn Arthur Ott of Ignacio died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001. He was 80.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Ott was born in 1920 in Leader, Canada. In December 1945, he married Velvie Mae Penwell.

Mr. Ott was an Army electrician and later worked as an electrician on the Eisenhower Tunnel and REA in Wheatland, Wyo. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Mr. Ott moved to the Ignacio area from Delta three years ago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velvie Mae.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Williams of Ignacio, Linda Maag of Lubbock, Texas, and Diane Pierce of Denver.

No services are scheduled at this time.
