George Floyd Butler
George Floyd Butler died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Tulsa, Okla. He was 89.
Mr. Butler was born Sept. 12, 1911, in Cleburne, Texas. He came to Durango with his parents in 1913. Until 1954, he and his brother, Melvin Butler, ranched and farmed west of Breen.
Mr. Butler served as steward in the Marvel Methodist Church for a number of years.
His wife, Phyllis Roth Butler, born in the Hesperus area, preceded him in death in 2000.
He is survived by two sons, David and George Jr., and his daughter, Joan of Tulsa, Okla.; three brothers, Melvin, Luther and Virgil; and two sisters, Vera Ullom and Frances Corbin.
Funeral and burial were held Feb. 12 in Rogers, Ark.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Marvel Methodist Church.
Kaye Ann Cardell
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Kaye Ann Cardell, a Dolores resident, who died Wednesday Feb. 7, 2001, at University Hospital in Denver, following a fight with leukemia. She was 46.
The Rev. Timothy Evers will officiate at services. A reception at the Durango Elks Lodge will follow the service at 5 p.m. Call Jana Hanstedt at 247-7862 for more information.
Ms. Cardell was born Oct. 15, 1954, in Phoenix. She worked for nine years with Durango Orthopedic Associates as a surgical coordinator. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and spent many summers at Navajo Lake. The last couple of years she enjoyed her time at Ground Hog Campground.
She is survived by her daughter, Maelen Cardell of Denver; three brothers, Lee, Barry and Michael Hanstedt; a twin sister, Karen Hanstedt; and many nieces and nephews.
Mark Wayne Baker
A memorial Mass will be held at a later date in Phoenix for Mark Wayne Baker, a restaurant owner, who died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at his home in Bayfield. He was 53.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The family will receive friends at a visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Mr. Baker was born April 13, 1947, in Pueblo. He served in the Navy during Vietnam. He married Alicia Adrian on Jan. 8, 1988, in Phoenix. He has lived in Pueblo, Albuquerque and Phoenix. He was a hard worker and owned restaurants in Phoenix. He and his wife moved to the Durango area in 1997, where he was manager of Quizno’s.
He is survived by his wife, Alicia Baker of Bayfield; six children, Mike Baker of Phoenix, Nick Baker of Seattle, Patricia Valdez of Phoenix, Frank Garcia of Phoenix, Bonnie Barrios of Porterville, Calif., Mike Garcia of Bayfield; his mother, Nevin Baker of Camdenton, Mo.; and 14 grandchildren.
Peggy Louise Norwood Vitale
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Central Church of Christ in Monte Vista for Peggy Louise Norwood Vitale, who died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Durango. She was 75.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Vitale was born July 12, 1925, in Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from high school in Fort Worth in 1942. She married S.J. Vitale Sept. 2, 1944.
Mrs. Vitale was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was the assistant clerk for the city of Monte Vista for 15 years and kept the ambulance books. Most recently, she worked part time for R.E.A. She also taught swimming lessons for the Red Cross and volunteered for many community services.
Survivors include her husband, S.J. Vitale; a sister, Jean Witt; five children, Laura Bailey, Donna Bush, Martha Ball, Michael Vitale and Vincent Vitale; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the local hospice.
Sharon Laurine Marler
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Durango/Pagosa Funeral Options Chapel for Sharon Laurine Marler, who died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at her home in Pagosa Springs. She was 56.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Louis Day will officiate.
Mrs. Marler was born Aug. 15, 1944, in Los Angeles. She married Rod Marler Nov. 29, 1992.
Mrs. Marler was a business owner. In 1993, she moved from Lake Tahoe, Calif., to join her husband in Pagosa Springs and to support her husband’s business, Marler Construction.
Survivors include her husband, Rod Marler of Pagosa Springs; four children, Brian Fulbright of Pagosa Springs, Gilbert Fulbright of Los Osos, Calif., Bill Fulbright of La Habra, Calif., and Carrie Lillo of Atascadero, Calif.; her stepson, Sean Marler of Grand Junction; eight grandchildren; two sisters; one brother; her father, Gilbert Adams of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; and her mother, Laurine Oyler of Sun City, Calif.
Adolph Lewis Soens
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church for Adolph Lewis Soens, who died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home in Durango after a short illness. He was 69.
The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate.
Mr. Soens was born March 13, 1931, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School with a full scholarship to Harvard University. He received his doctorate from Princeton, and did post-graduate work at Magdalene College, Oxford. He taught at the University of Colorado and the University of Notre Dame.
Mr. Soens was the author of two books and numerous articles. He was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a Mason and a member of the Rose Society.
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Soens.
Survivors include his wife, Jill; four daughters, Patricia C. Soens and Rebecca Woodworth, both of New Orleans, Mary M. Soens-Oliveria of Boston, and Ingrid W. Soens of Charlottesville, Va.; a son, Adolph L. Soens of South Bend, Ind.; a brother, Robert P. Soens of Alexandria, Va.; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Juan Mauricio Ribera
Juan Mauricio Ribera died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his home in Carracas, Colo. He was 88.
Mr. Ribera was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Cimarron, N.M. He was a life-long resident of the area.
From the age of 16, Mr. Ribera went out on his own and worked on ranches, construction and mines found along the San Juan Mountains and the San Luis Valley. On June 2, 1942, he was inducted into the Army/Air Force during World War II. During his service in World War II from 1942 to 1945, he received the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. At the time of his honorable discharge, he was a TEC5. He was a member of the American Legion Post 36 in Ignacio.
Mr. Ribera married Maria Maximiana Gomez April 9, 1947, in Rosa, N.M. The lived in Rosa, Allison, Chimney Rock and Arboles until 1956 when they moved to Carracas, Colo. He worked in lumber mills, as a sheepherder and, later, a mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Maximiana; 11 children, Mauricio Ribera Jr. of Corvallis, Ore., Waldo Gomez of Pagosa Springs, Dan Ribera of Carracas, Colo., Patrick Ribera, Arabella Ribera and Irene Ribera, all of Westminster, Josephine Peterson of Arvada, Chris Ribera of Tiffany, Val Ribera of Bloomfield, N.M., Ramona Perue of Laramie, Wyo., and Maxine Sena of Layton, Utah; 29 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 3 at St. Peter-St. Rosa Catholic Church, followed by military interment at Rosa Cemetery.
Artie Mae Wetherington Peterson
Artie Mae Wetherington Peterson died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Arlington Hospital in Virginia. She died of complications from metastatic breast cancer. She was 75.
Mrs. Peterson was born May 7, 1925, in Durango. She married Robert Neal (Pete) Peterson June 13, 1949, in San Diego, Calif. A Navy family, they moved from Virginia to Hawaii and back to Virginia where Mr. Peterson retired in 1967 from the Seabees. He died in 1969. For 10 years, she worked for the Bank of Virginia before opening Artie’s Laundromat in Woodbridge, Va., in the spring of 1978.
Survivors include her children, Ronald, Donald and Linda; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three sisters, Vinice, Barbara and Laquita; a brother, Robert; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Artie’s Laundromat in Woodbridge, Va. Mrs. Peterson will be buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, in June 2001.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Breast Cancer Society, 124 Park Street, Vienna, VA 22180.
Rathburne E. Evans
Rathburne E. Evans died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at his home in Durango from natural causes. He was 88.
Mr. Evans was born March 22, 1912, in Lane, Okla. He lived in Durango for about nine years.
He is survived by two daughters, Fern Ferguson of Durango and Karen Evans of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; a son, Rex Evans of Elk City, Okla.; four sisters, Daphne Evans of Carrollton, Mo., Jackie Taylor of Ventura, Calif., Ynaith Evans of Kingston, Idaho, and LaQuita Evans of Madera, Calif.; a brother, Forrest Dale Evans of North Highland, Calif.; former wife, Geraldine S. Golden of Durango; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many other family and step-family members.
Services will be held in Cleveland, Okla., and burial will occur at Woodland Cemetery, also in Cleveland.
