Hazel Ray
Hazel Ray died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 96.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Ray was born Nov. 12, 1904, in Thayer, Mo. She lived in Hesperus for many years. She was an active member of the Unity Church of Durango.
Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Johnson of Huntington Beach, Calif., Lorraine Taylor of Hesperus, and Margaret Sheppard of North Bend, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held today. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Roger B. Robbins
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mancos United Methodist Church for Roger B. Robbins, who died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. He was 72.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Ora Dailey will officiate. Burial will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery
with military graveside services by the John Derrick Halls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Robbins was born Nov. 13, 1928, in Mancos. He married Ruth M. Alexander Dec. 14, 1974, in Durango. He owned his own plumbing and heating company.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Robbins of Bloomfield, N.M.; three children, Rodney Robbins of Longmont, Colo., Bobby Robbins of Anchorage, Alaska, and Lee Robbins of Flora Vista, N.M.; two stepsons, Jesse Latham of Albuquerque, N.M., and David Latham of Bloomfield, N.M.; one stepdaughter, Linda Roby of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Verna Towne and Virgie Edwards, both of Mancos, and Iki Moore of Gallup, N.M.; three brothers, Eddie Robbins and Buster Miller, both of Mancos, and Clyde Robbins of Jacksonville, Ark.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Montezuma County.
Ruth W. Supancic
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bayfield Cemetery
for Ruth W. Supancic, a housewife and grandmother to numerous friends and relatives, who died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, from heart failure. She was 90.
The Rev. John Knutson of Christ the King Lutheran Church will officiate at services.
Mrs. Jackson was born Oct. 30, 1910, in Daykin, Neb. She married Rudolph Supancic on June 2, 1933. They had two daughters, Ruth Thompson and Peggy Gardenier.
She is survived by six grandchildren, Michael Thompson of Arboles, Steven Thompson of Mobile, Ala., and Kathy Deal, Carol Iverson, Donald Gardenier and Randy Gardenier of New York.
She is preceded in death by two daughters, Ruth Thompson and Peggy Gardenier.
Opal Pearl Rabbit
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
for Opal Pearl Rabbit, a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, who died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Durango. She was 73.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Rabbit was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Breen. She was raised in Breen, but lived most of her life in Ignacio. Mrs. Rabbit was well known for her beautiful beadwork.
She is survived by her son, Gary Grey of Ignacio; and three grandchildren, DeAarcy Williams, Nash Williams, and Joyce Williams, all of Ignacio.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Williams.
Don P. Barcus
A memorial Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Don P. Barcus, who died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 72.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. Interment of cremated remains will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mr. Barcus was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Kansas City, Mo. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Mr. Barcus lived in Durango since 1972. He retired from La Plata County government after 20 years with the assessor’s office first and then as deputy treasurer.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Barcus of Durango; three sons, Mike Wilson and Paul Barcus, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Carl Barcus of Durango; a brother, Bob Barcus of North Judson, Ind.; and three grandchildren.
Joseph J. Slack
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Crist Mortuary in Boulder, Colo., for Joseph J. Slack, who died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Boulder. He was 82.
Mr. Slack was born July 24, 1918, in Long Lane, Mo. He was raised in the Durango area. He attended Boulder Preparatory School in the 1930s, and obtained an engineering degree from the University of Colorado in 1940.
Mr. Slack joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and transferred to the U.S. Air Force, specializing in meteorology and forecasting. He was stationed at various bases around the world and rose to the rank of colonel, last commanding the 29th Weather Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana.
Mr. Slack retired from the Air Force back to Boulder in 1961. He worked for the National Weather Service at Buckley Airfield, from which he retired a second time in 1974. He spent the remainder of his life volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Base Line Middle School and the Colorado Trail Foundation.
Mr. Slack married Betti Frye in July 1941 in Santa Ana, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betti, and a daughter, Claudia.
He is survived by three children, Bill Slack, Tim Slack and Penny Slack Hess; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the Colorado Trail Foundation for the erection of a Joe Slack Memorial Bench, which will be placed in his favorite area, the Sliderock section of the Colorado Trail near Durango.
Elroy M. Darr
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary for Elroy M. Darr, a longtime resident of the Durango area, who died on his 92nd birthday, Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center. He was 92.
The Rev. Joe Sparks will officiate.
Mr. Darr was born Jan. 30, 1909, in Norwood, Mo. He later moved to Durango where he lived for 44 years and worked as a farmer and rancher. He was married for 71 years.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Durango; a daughter, Evelyn Batson, of Albuquerque; two sons, Dale Darr, of Las Lunas, N.M., and Loren Darr, of Mesa; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Lois Edna Hickman
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Bayfield for Lois Edna Hickman, a graduate of Durango High School, who died Saturday at her home in Bayfield. She was 82.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. James Newman will officiate at services. Burial will follow services at Pine River Cemetery.
Mrs. Hickman was born June 8, 1918, in Pawnee, Okla. She married Edward L. Hickman on Dec. 16, 1939, in Aztec. She worked for a state senator for awhile and then was head cook with the Bayfield School District for 24 years. Mrs. Hickman was active with the Sarah Rebecca Lodge and other women’s organizations. She was a devoted Christian and church member. She enjoyed a variety of crafts and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her son, Harland Hickman.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Hickman, of Bayfield; a daughter, Caroline Shupe of Bayfield; two sons, Harvey Hickman of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Howard Hickman of Parachute, Colo.; a sister, Nellie Kinslow of Utah; five brothers, Frank Robbins of California, Alfred Robbins of Durango, Charles Robbins of Arizona, Harold Robbins of Nebraska, and Donald Robbins of Denver; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

John E. Baker Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for John E. Baker Sr., former Southern Ute Chairman, who died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his home in Ignacio. He was 82.
The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate at services. Burial will follow services at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio. A rosary service will be at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Baker was born April 25, 1918, in Ignacio. He served overseas in the Army during World War II as a surgical technician. He was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe where in addition to being chairman, he served as a Tribal Council member for many years. Mr. Baker played a role in developing various tribal programs over the years. He enjoyed the outdoors and gunsmith work.
He is survived by his wife, Lula Baker of Ignacio; two sons, John E. Baker Jr., and Ernest Baker of Ignacio; a daughter, Angela Baker of Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, Chris Baker of Ignacio; and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two children, Michael and Zelda.
