James W. Nystrom

Funeral and veteran honor guard services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grants Mortuary in Grants, N.M., for James W. Nystrom, who died Monday, June 25, 2001, in Grants, N.M., of natural causes. He was 78.

The Rev. Garland Moore will officiate at services. Members of the Grants-Milan VFW Post No. 3221 will provide Honor Guard detail. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Grants Mortuary Chapel. Cremation will follow the funeral.

Mr. Nystrom was born on Nov. 5, 1922, in Crosby, N.D. He served in the military during World War II, and he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action.

He lived in Durango for more than 20 years.

Mr. Nystrom was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3221 and the American Legion Post No. 60. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting.

Mr. Nystrom is survived by three sons, James A. Nystrom of Hillsboro, Ore., Tom Nystrom of Farmington, and Fred Leroy Nystrom of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; a daughter, Diana J. Weddle of Plano, Texas; a brother, Bob Nystrom of Boise, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Iva Mae Bashor

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. Johns, Ariz., for Iva Mae Bashor, a former Durango resident, who died June 24, 2001, in St. Johns of an extended illness. She was 72.

Mrs. Bashor was born Feb. 1, 1929, in Mancos. She lived in Durango for several years, where she and her first husband, Thomas Mulvehill, co-owned the Thomas Decor gift shop in downtown Durango. She later married Marvin Bashor and moved to St. Johns, Ariz.

Mrs. Bashor is survived by her husband, Marvin; daughters, Glenda Lee Schmull of Phoenix and Debbie Jo Wilson of Atlanta; a brother, R.L. Rathjen of Durango; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Curtis Trimble

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bayfield Lion’s Club Hall, located on Church Street in downtown, for Curtis Trimble, who died June 19, 2001, in Hurricane, Utah.

Karen Quintana McDaniel

A Mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday, June 20, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Farmington for Karen Quintana McDaniel, a Durango native, who died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was 55.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Monsignor Leo Gomez officiated at the service. Internment will be at Greenmount Cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. McDaniel was born Nov. 20, 1945, in Durango. She married Johnny McDaniel on May 20, 1963.

Mrs. McDaniel worked in the health-care profession for many years in Oregon.

She is survived by sons Todd McDaniel of Vancouver, Wash., and Christopher McDaniel of Gallup; daughter, Tifani Knight of Farmington; sisters, Mitzi Haramina of Phoenix and Diane Dostaler of Farmington; brother, Ronald Quintana of Beaver Creek, Ore.; mother, Viola Quintana of Farmington; and five grandchildren.

John ‘Howard’ Hughes

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango for John "Howard" Hughes, who died Friday, June 22, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center of natural causes. He was 97.

The Rev. Rick Calhoun of First United Methodist Church will officiate at the service. Carolyn Smith and The Old Folks at Home will perform before and after the service.

Mr. Hughes was born Aug. 22, 1903, in Curran, Ill. He was a 33-year employee of the WT Waggoner Ranch in Vernon, Texas. He moved to Durango in 1995 to be close to family.

He was a 55-year member of the Masonic Lodge and held the 32nd degree Scottish Rite.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie.

He is survived by a son, John Hughes of Durango; a granddaughter, Jeanne Arnold of Durango; and great-grandsons, Cord and Jarvie Arnold of Durango.

William Joseph ‘Bill’ Maurer Jr.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Durango for William Joseph Maurer Jr., who died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at his home in Durango after an extended battle with cancer. He was 50.

The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate at the service. A graveside ceremony will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery by the Durango Elks Lodge.

Mr. Maurer was born Jan. 8, 1951, in Pittsburgh. He married Denise Truitt on Sept. 24, 1983, in Colorado Springs.

Mr. Maurer graduated from Rochester High School in Michigan, attended the University of Michigan and graduated from Regis College in Denver. He worked on a master’s degree at the University of Colorado at Denver and was a fraternal member of Phi Epsilon.

The Maurers moved to Durango in December 1995. Mr. Maurer worked as a banker at Wells Fargo. He was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge and High Noon Rotary. He was a former Toastmaster.

He is survived by his wife, Denise, of Durango; two children, Pamela and Drew Maurer of Durango; parents, William Joseph and Gayle B. Maurer of Rochester Hills, Mich.; a grandmother, Eugenia Dolores Maurer of Santa Maria, Calif.; sisters, Michelle Sherrill-Mix of Alpena, Mich., Stephanie Rupp of Lake Orion, Mich., and Andrea Maurer of New Hope, Penn.; a brother, Jeffrey Maurer of Rochester Hills, Mich.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the High Noon Rotary Scholarship Fund, c/o Chessa Gill, 10 Town Plaza, PBM455, Durango, CO 81301; the Patrick W. Luter, MD Cancer Center, 3801 N. Main, Durango, CO 81301; or the First Presbyterian Church, 1159 East Third Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Charles Lynn Hollar

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield, N.M., for Charles Lynn Hollar, who died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Bloomfield of a bullet wound. He was 43.

Pastor Joe Bunce will officiate at the services. Cremation occurred in Albuquerque.

Mr. Hollar was born Sept. 26, 1957 in Durango. He worked in the Four Corners area as a ranch hand and horseshoer.

He is survived by his parents, Sam and Betty Hollar of Bloomfield; a grandmother, Irene Webber of Bloomfield; a daughter, Kelly Jo Baker of Durango; brother, Don Hollar of Gillette, Wyo.; and a sister, Debbie Hollar of Los Lunas, N.M.

Gladys Geneva ‘Maudie’ Eberly

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango for Gladys Geneva "Maudie" Eberly, longtime resident of Durango, who died Monday, June 18, 2001, at her home in Durango of natural causes. She was 89.

Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate at the service.

Mrs. Eberly was born Oct. 24, 1911, in Beaver Dam, Ky. She married John David Eberly on Oct. 20, 1934, in Wellsburg, W.Va. The Eberlys moved to California in 1946 and then to Durango in 1988.

Mrs. Eberly enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and traveling in her motor home.

She is survived by her husband, John Eberly of Durango; daughters, Glenda Eberly Potter of North Ridge, Calif., Susan Eberly Walls of Mount Crawford, Va., and Janalee Eberly of Durango; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Charlette Leann ‘Charlie’ Sheets

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary in Durango, for Charlette Leann "Charlie" Sheets, a lifelong resident of Durango and Bayfield, who died Friday, June 15, 2001, in Albuquerque. She was 42.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary. Cremation will follow at the Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mrs. Sheets was born April 29, 1959, in Española, N.M. She married Darrell Sheets Aug. 31, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nev.

She worked for City Market, Lon’s Automotive and the Tax Depot.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell Sheets of Bayfield; parents, Mainard and Betty Heiden of Durango; daughter, Sky Marie Sheets of Bayfield; son, Dustin William Sheets of Bayfield; brother, Bill Heiden of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; sisters, Ann Pilcher of Longmont, Colo., and Karen Binger of Durango; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be sent to the Charlette Sheets Memorial Fund, First National Bank of Durango, 259 West Ninth St., Durango, CO 81301.

Jack L. Heath
A memorial service will be held August 11 in Durango for Jack L. Heath, who died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at his home south of Durango in a construction accident. He was 69.
Mr. Heath was born on June 3, 1931, in Clarendon, Texas, and grew up in Amarillo, Texas. He moved to Durango in the 1970s with his partner, Bill Dashner.

Mr. Heath taught skiing at Durango Mountain Resort. He enjoyed kayaking, flying, the outdoors and horticulture.

He is survived by an uncle, Wallace Heath of Amarillo, Texas, and aunt, Bobbye Jo Heath, of Lubbock, Texas.

Contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to a favorite charity.

Doris M. Tate

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Kirtland, N.M., for Doris M. Tate of Bloomfield, N.M., who died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 in Durango of natural causes. She was 76.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 458 County Road 6100, Kirtland, N.M. Burial will follow the funeral at the Kirtland community cemetery.

Mrs. Tate was born October 10, 1924 in Colorado Springs.

She is survived by three sons, Randy Alva Tate, Robert (Butch) Edward McCune and Michael Loren Tate; two daughters, Linda Carroll Dahm and Kathy Diane Meaunrit, of Durango; and 18 grandchildren.
