Vera E. Ambold

Vera E. Ambold, a native and longtime resident of Durango, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at her home in Maryville, Tenn., of natural causes. She was 88.

No services will be held.

Ms. Ambold was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Durango. She lived at the same home on Third Avenue for 70 years. She worked as a bookkeeper, secretary and Realtor. Ms. Ambold never had children but helped raise a niece and two great-nieces. She enjoyed reading and cooking.

She is survived by her niece, Charlene Underwood of Dandridge, Tenn,; two great-nieces, Kim Gillis of Deer Park, Wash., and Connie Wilkinson of Maryville, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a local hospice.

Manuelita D. "Midge" Madril

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church of Durango for Manuelita D. "Midge" Madril, who died Monday, June 4, 2001, in Durango of natural causes. She was 77.

Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Ms. Madril was born Oct. 29, 1923. in Alamosa, Colo. She served in the Womens Army Corp Services during World War II. She was commander of the Disabled American Veterans and was a member of the American Legion.

She was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and the Durango-La Plata Senior Center. She enjoyed gardening and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Robert G. Madril.

She is survived by three sons, Bob Madril and Steve Madril of Durango, and Anthony Madril of San Diego, Calif.; four daughters, Peggy Gafford of Grand Junction, Rose Rees of Salt Lake City, and Evelyn Torres and Anna O’Malley of Durango; five sisters; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace S. Dunkley

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at McAuley & Wallace Mortuary in Fullerton, Calif., for Grace S. Dunkley, who died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at her home in Durango of natural causes. She was 93.

Mrs. Dunkley was born July 31, 1907, in Preston, Idaho. She was a professor at the University of Southern California and Arizona State University.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Dunkley and son, Reed Dunkley.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Mattson of Fallbrook, Calif., and Faye Gosche of Durango; a son, Lynn Dunkley of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Lowell Smith of Pocatello, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Nancy Jean Mahan-Denbo

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gazebo at Rotary Park for Nancy Jean Mahan-Denbo, a lifelong Durango resident, who died June 1, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center after an extended illness. She was 48.

A reception will follow services at the American Legion. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mrs. Mahan-Denbo was born March 6, 1953, in Durango.

She is survived by four children, Kimberly Mahan of Farmington, Krysten Williams of Durango, David Fisher of Wyoming and Mallory Vesper of Durango; two brothers, Bob Driver of Dove Creek and twin brother Danny Driver of Durango; a sister, Cindy Barnes of Germany; her father, Carl Driver of California; and two grandchildren, Alan-Michael Williams and Iesha-Rae Williams, both of Durango.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, David Mahan.

Charles Foster Ransom

A private memorial service will be held at a later date for Charles Foster Ransom, who died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Durango from complications after a fall. He was 91.

Mr. Ransom was born Nov. 29, 1909, in Somerville, Mass. He married Kathryn Owen in 1938.

He earned a degree in history and completed three years of graduate school at Tufts College. He spent three years presenting puppet and marionette shows in Massachusetts, Chicago and Pittsburgh. He continued his performances as a hobby in the following years.

Mr. Ransom worked as an editorial writer for 41 years at the Des Moines, Iowa, Register and Tribune newspapers.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn.

He is survived by two daughters, Guinevere Hillman of Portland, Ore., and Rosalie "Sara" Ransom of Durango; a son, David Ransom of San Francisco; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sam Carr

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lescher-Millsap Chapel in Muskogee, Okla., for Sam Carr, who died Aug. 1, 2001, in Muskogee of natural causes. He was 82.

The Rev. Marion Graves will officiate at the service. The family will be available from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home. Burial will be Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Russellville, Ark.

Mr. Carr was born April 12, 1919, in De Kalb, Texas. He married Okla Mae Brown in 1944 in Texarkana, Ark. He was a retired drug salesman, and worked for McKesson and Robbins for more than 40 years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Okla.

He is survived by a son, Ted Carr of Durango; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Carr and Elanor Carr of Durango.

Estela Dulcinea (Stella) Manzanares

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Mountlake Terrace, Wash., for Estela Dulcinea (Stella) Manzanares, who died July 28, 2001, from lung cancer at her home in Brier, Wash. She was 75.

A Rosary was recited Thursday, Aug. 2. Mrs. Manzanares was born on January 3, 1926, in Ignacio and was raised there. She met John Andrew Manzanares in Ignacio and they married in Ignacio on May 19, 1942.

Mrs. Manzanares moved with her husband to Mountlake Terrace, where they raised 10 children and one nephew. She worked for Stevens Hospital, from which she retired in 1991. Mrs. Manzanares and her husband traveled extensively in their motor home. She was a parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church for 30 years.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Doyle.

She is survived by her husband, John, of Mountlake Terrace; six sons, David Manzanares, Steven, Manzanares, Henry Manzanares, Drew Manzanares, Anthony Manzanares and Carl Manzanares; three daughters, Catherine Herda, Christina Austin and Andrea Szalda; a nephew, Ray Manzanares; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Wash.

Grace Violet Ring

A funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Grace Violet Ring who died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. She was 85. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Keith Watson will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Ring was born July 27, 1916, in Pendleton, N.M. She loved animals and especially liked dogs, birds and horses. She had a special pet squirrel when she resided in Littleton. She also loved to play pinochle.

Mrs. Ring is survived by two daughters, Jean Smith of Lake Mills, Wis., and Dixie Hoole of Littleton; a son, Clay Alexander, of Bastrop, Texas; a sister, Thelma Watson, of Grand Junction; and 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two husbands and eight brothers and sisters.

Arnold L. Jean

Arnold L. Jean, a longtime Ignacio resident, died Friday, June 22, 2001, in Cottonwood, Ariz., of lung cancer. He was 71.

He was cremated June 26, 2001, at Mountain View Crematory in Prescott, Ariz.

Mr. Jean was born Dec. 8, 1929, in Andover, Mass. He was self-employed and worked in the antiques and collectibles business.

He is survived by a brother, Edward L. Jean of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Craig Jean of Las Vegas and Randy Jean of Los Angeles; and four grandsons.

Thomas M. (Tom) Helms

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Thomas M. "Tom" Helms, a Bayfield resident, who died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 75.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

There will be cremation at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Helms was born May 8, 1926, in Steubenville, Ohio. His family moved to California while he was still a baby. He married Helen A. Whalen on Aug. 20, 1977, in Newburgh, Ind.

Mr. Helms enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. After his service, he returned to California where he worked for Universal Studios and other companies before retiring in Bayfield in 1991. He was an avid skier, a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying gliders.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Helms of Bayfield; two daughters, Criss Helms of Sanford, Fla., and Tracy Lynn Mickel of Perrysburg, Ohio; two sons, Ranza Lee Bateman of Damascus, Md., and Robert Dale Bateman of Dunnellon, Fla.; a brother, Alex Helms of Palo Alto, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
