Julian Romero

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango for Julian Romero, who died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. He was 72.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos officiated at the service. A recitation of the rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Hood Mortuary. Burial was at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Romero was born Sept. 3, 1928, in La Boca and raised in Durango. He married Theresa Lobato May 9, 1955, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received a medical discharge. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks No. 507 and was formerly Exalted Ruler. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and he volunteered in the community. Mr. Romero worked for Boyd Richner for 26 years and was an employee at north City Market.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; two daughters, Mary Ann Roberts of Littleton and Kathy Shubert of Durango; a son, Tony Romero of Hesperus; a sister, Udell Romero of Denver; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Elks Foundation, 901 East Second Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Lorraine M. Anderson

A private family service will be planned for Lorraine M. Anderson, a 24-year Durango resident, who died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 70.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Anderson will be cremated at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mrs. Anderson was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Oroville, Calif. She married Walter Anderson on Jan. 13, 1951, in Pasadena, Calif.

She is survived by her husband, Walter, of Durango; her mother, Lola Elmer, of California; a sister, Gwen Tamietti, of California; three daughters, Holly Luke, of Aurora, Ill., Cheri Johnson, of Cape Coral, Fla., and Lisa Manfredonia, of Durango; a son, Erik Anderson, of Durango; and 11 grandchildren.

De Lasso Loos

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary in Durango, for De Lasso Loos, a longtime Durango resident, who died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center of natural causes. He was 80.

The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at the service.

Mr. Loos was born March 1, 1921, in Yoakum, Texas. He married his wife, Billie, on Oct. 22, 1944.

Mr. Loos was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 8th Photo Recon Squadron. After the war, he served as an air investigator with the U.S. Airforce in Meridian, Miss.

He was a graduate of Oklahoma University with a degree in petroleum engineering. He moved to Durango in 1952 and worked in the petroleum exploration industry until his retirement in 1985.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee Loos.

He is survived by his wife, Billie, of Durango; two sons, Phillip Loos of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Richard Loos of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Anita Zellitti of Durango and Kim Rayburn of Biloxi, Miss.; two brothers, Joe Loos and Donny Loos, both of Victoria, Texas; two sisters, Patricia Beck and Jean Kupfernagel, both of Victoria, Texas; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert F. Evans

No services are planned for Robert F. Evans, a Durango resident, who died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 78.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary in Durango.

Mr. Evans was born March 15, 1923, in Denver. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines. He was an inventor and held many patents pertaining to oil engineering. He was a sculptor and enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Mr. Evans was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by a son, Dale Evans of La Habra, Calif.; two daughters, Trudy Cleveland of San Diego, Calif., and Lisa Blumer of Fullerton, Calif.; two sisters, Mable Dumont and Evelyn Yurko of Denver; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Roland Arthur Bartel

A memorial mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Saint Rita’s Catholic Church, 203 S. Main St., in Mancos, for Roland Arthur Bartel, who died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in Mancos of cancer. He was 84.

The Rev. Tom Munson will officiate at services. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Saint Rita’s Catholic Church. A lunch and reception will follow the memorial mass.

Mr. Bartel was born Sep. 22, 1916, in Halstead, Kan. He was a longtime rancher and member of the Mancos, La Plata County, Colorado and National Cattleman’s Associations. He enjoyed ice skating and baseball.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Ruth, and a granddaughter, Sara Yvette Bartel.

He is survived by a son, Lawrence Bartel of Mancos; three daughters, Eleanor Bartel-Conner of Citrus Heights, Calif., Eileen Bartel-Thompson of Mancos, and Lorene Bartel-Bonds of Bondad; a brother, Marvin Bartel of Gap, Penn.; three sisters, Mildred Mueller of Halstead, Kan., Frances Bartel of Moundridge, Kan., and Dorothy Dick of Moundridge, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3801 N. Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Harland James Brittain

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Durango for Harland James Brittain, who died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at his home in Bayfield after a long illness. He was 70.

The Rev. Gary Thur will officiate at the service. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mr. Brittain was born July 15, 1931, in Mancos. He married Sharon Wood on Dec. 12, 1951, in Los Angeles.

Mr. Brittain graduated from Mancos High School in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and retired as a master sergeant in 1970, when he moved to Bayfield. In 1976, the Brittains moved to Oregon, but returned to Bayfield in 1992.

Mr. Brittain was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; a sister, Bonnie Levine of California; a brother, John Brittain of Durango; four sons, Steven Brittain of Durango, James Brittain of Aztec, Frank Brittain of Albany, Ore., and John Brittain of Bayfield; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Gary Lynn Canode

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Methodist Church of Durango, for Gary Lynn Canode, who died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at his home in Yuma, Ariz., in a tractor accident. He was 55.

The Revs. Rick Calhoun and Steve Easterday-McFadden will officiate at the service.

Mr. Canode was born Aug. 26, 1945, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1964.

Mr. Canode was a teacher in Bloomfield, N.M., and Yuma, Ariz. He was also a private pilot, builder and mechanic. He retired in June 2001. He enjoyed snow skiing and was one of the first skiers at Chapman Hill.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Canode of Yuma; a son, Jay Canode of Yuma; his parents, Bill and Eileen Canode of Durango; two sisters, Melanie Canode of Medford, Ore., and Patti Thurmond of Regina, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to an educational scholarship established in his name at the Arizona Credit Union, 35228 Central Branch, 1780 South First, Yuma, AZ 85364.

Mary F. Clark

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Durango, for Mary F. Clark, who died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Four Corners HealthCare Center in Durango of natural causes. She was 91.

A private burial will be at Ingleside Cemetery in Naples, N.Y.

Mrs. Clark was born June 13, 1910, in Rushville, N.Y. She lived in New York until 1995 when she moved to Durango to be with her children.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry K. Clark.

She is survived by a son, Harry Clark of Durango; a daughter, Lorane Clark of Bloomfield; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road, Durango, CO 81301.
