Mary A. Schumacher

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Mary A. Schumacher, a lifelong Durango resident, who died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango of natural causes. She was 95.

The Rev. Ned Amstutz will officiate at the service. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. There will be visitations from noon to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Schumacher was born Sept. 23, 1905, in Durango.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed roses. She was a seamstress and sewed for clothing stores and weddings. Mrs. Schumacher was a member of First Baptist Church, Sarah Rebecca Lodge and the Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer.

She is survived by three sons, LeRoy Schumacher of Durango, Charles Schumacher of Durango and Jack Schumacher of Fruita; two brothers, Otto (Barney) Schoser of Durango and Frank Schoser of Durango; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to a nonprofit of one’s choice.

Percy Wayne Airy

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Percy Wayne Airy, a longtime Durango resident, who died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 83. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Pastor Shawn O’Reilly will officiate at services. Cremation will follow the funeral at Hood Mortuary Crematory. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Airy was born July 14, 1918, in Durango. He married Vera Gregory on Nov. 16, 1948, in El Paso, Texas.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He then worked a short time at the American Legion Post No. 28 in Durango before beginning a long career as a surveyor with the Bureau of Reclamation. Mr. Airy retired in 1985. He enjoyed working in his yard, camping and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Airy of Durango; two sons, Charles Keith Airy of Hartville, Ohio, and Robin Airy of Durango; a brother, Keith Airy of San Diego, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 701 Camino del Rio, Durango, CO 81301.

Inez Monell Dano

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Inez Monell Dano, who died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. The cause of death was not disclosed. She was 86.

The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at the service.

Ms. Dano was born June 12, 1915 in Aurora, Ill. She was a correction officer for 15 years in Maricopa County, Ariz., where she was also involved with the Fraternal Order of Police. She enjoyed needlework and her elephant figurine collection. She retired to Durango in 1988 to be near her daughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Edythe Joy Huffman of Durango; three sons, Richard John Dano of Cucamonga, Calif., Richard Lee Dano of Hayford, Calif., and Franklin Edward Dano of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Betty Mae Goll of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Lee Masters

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Victorious Life Fellowship Assembly of God Church in Durango for Kenneth Lee Masters, a native of Durango, who died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his home in Durango. He was 66. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Stan Formby will officiate at services.

Mr. Masters was born March 18, 1935, in Durango. He married Janet Masters Aug. 27, 1956, in Long Beach, Calif. He was a long-line truck driver and owner-operator for 23 years. He retired in January 2000 from his job as shop foreman for the La Plata County Road and Bridge Department. He loved team roping, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, of Durango; four sons, Wade Masters, Dustin Masters and Daniel Masters, all of Elk Grove, Calif., and Deon Masters of Durango; his mother, Edna Masters of Whittier, Calif.; his sister, Jean Gardner of Ferndale, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara Ann Saunders

Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Tomac residence, 11898 Road G, McElmo Canyon, for Barbara Ann Saunders, a 30-year resident of Durango, who died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 72. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Saunders was born May 16, 1929, in Colorado Springs. She was married to Bill G. Saunders.

Mrs. Saunders worked as an optometric assistant at Vision Care. She was a member of the Hillcrest Ladies Golf Association and she was an avid bowler.

Mrs. Saunders is survived by her children, Michael P. Saunders of Cortez, David W. Saunders of Black Canyon City, Ariz., Kathy A. Tomac of McElmo; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Paul Kapelke of Arizona; and her friend and former spouse, Bill G. Saunders of Jackson, Miss.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Saunders’ name to the Hillcrest Junior Golf Foundation, in care of Hillcrest Golf Course.

Willard Leo Croonenberghs

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, for Willard Leo Croonenberghs, a Durango native, who died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. He was 86. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Andrew Cooley will officiate at the service.

Mr. Croonenberghs was born June 14, 1915, in Durango. He married Helen E. Bryce on Feb. 28, 1941, in Durango.

Mr. Croonenberghs was enlisted in the 168th Field Artillery Unit of the Colorado National Guard during World War II. He was discharged on Dec. 28, 1945.

He was an engineer with Colorado Department of Transportation for 32 years, retiring in 1977. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge, San Juan Basin Shrine Club and the Durango Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Croonenberghs, of Durango; a son, Donald Croonenberghs of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Linda Jahraus of Laguna Beach, Calif.; a brother, Jasper Croonenberghs of Denver; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Contributions may be made to San Juan Basin Shrine Club Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 45, Durango.

Jennifer Shirley Webb

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Jennifer Shirley Webb, a Durango resident, who died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at her Durango home of Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was 46.

Mrs. Webb was born Nov. 26, 1954, in Santa Rosa, Calif.

She moved in 1975 to Colorado Springs, where she married James Webb on Feb. 9, 1981. She was employed at Otero Savings and Loan in Colorado Springs.

In 1987 her family relocated to Durango, where she worked as a probate clerk and later became the jury commissioner for La Plata County.

She was active in her sons’ sports activities and enjoyed participating in activities with St. Columba Catholic Church. She spent her free hours working with the flowers around her home.

She is survived by her husband, James Webb of Durango; two sons, Steven Webb and Randy Webb, both of Durango; mother and stepfather, Jane Newman and Ernest Newman of Colorado Springs; father, Riley Hagain of Hawaii; and a brother, Jeffrey Hagain of Colorado Springs.

B. Joyce Menke Long

A memorial service was held Oct. 18 in Mesa, Ariz. for B. Joyce Menke Long, a summer resident at Vallecito Lake, who died Oct. 14, 2001, in Mesa of cancer. She was 70.

Mrs. Long was born March 18, 1931, in Summerside Prince Edward Island, Canada. She married Hans Menke, a U. S. Air Force Sergeant, and moved with him throughout his Air Force career and later business career.

Mrs. Long, who was prececed in death by Mr. Meinke, retired to Mesa, Ariz. after her own career as a director of admissions of a private college in Albuquerque, N. M. She spent winters in Mesa and summers at her cabin at Vallecito. She spent many happy days on the lake on her boat or on the front porch visiting with friends and family.

Five years ago, she married her second husband, Robert E. Long.

She is survived by her husband Robert E. Long, of Mesa; two daughters, Janet Menke and Carol Hearon; a brother, Earle Clark of Prince Edward Island, Canada; and a sister, Judy Johnson of Prince Edward Island, Canada; and numerous grandchildren.

Reginalda (Hina) E. Martinez

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, in Ignacio, for Reginalda "Hina" E. Martinez, an Ignacio resident, who died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango of cancer. She was 39.

The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius. There will be cremation.

Mrs. Martinez was born Sept. 17, 1962, in Durango. She was a homemaker and lived in the Ignacio area most of her life.

She is survived by her mother, Ophelia Padilla of Ignacio; three daughters, Juanita Velasquez, Belinda Velasquez and Rudi-Ann Martinez, all of Ignacio; a son, Anthony Martinez of Ignacio; two brothers, Andrew Martinez and Dominick Martinez; and four sisters Veronica Garcia, Ruby Padilla, Avalina Paul and Dorothy Sandoval.
