Jeanette Alexandria Frost

A funeral will be held for Jeanette Alexandria Frost, who died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 14.

Funeral arrangements are pending. A wake will be at her family home on Friday evening.

Ms. Frost was born Oct. 14, 1987, in Durango. She was in eighth grade at Ignacio Junior High School, where she was active in the MESA club (Math, Engineering, Science and Academics). She was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and participated in traditional dances.

She is survived by her parents, Andrew and Janelle Frost of Ignacio; a brother, Jacob Frost of Ignacio; two sisters, Anastasia Frost and Eleanor Frost of Igancio; grandparents Jack M. Frost and Sharon Howell of Ignacio; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

William Scott Howell ‘Will’ Frost

A funeral will be held for William Scott Howell "Will" Frost, a Montana resident, who died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, of natural causes at home in Igancio. He was 36.

Funeral arrangements are pending. A wake will be at the family home from Thursday afternoon to Friday night.

Mr. Frost was born Sept. 5, 1965, in Durango. He graduated from Ignacio High School and was attending Salish Kootenai Tribal College in Pablo, Mont., at the time of his death. He was studying environmental science. He enjoyed motorcycles, fly fishing, hunting and carpentry.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Suzette Frost.

Mr. Frost is survived by his wife, Marilyn Smith of Arlee, Mont.; a son, William George Frost of Arlee, Mont.; a daughter, Miranda Louise Frost of Arlee, Mont.; parents Jack M. Frost and Sharon Howell of Ignacio; four brothers, Chief Prairie Chief, Tyner Prairie Chief, Jack Frost, Jr., and Andrew Frost, all of Ignacio; two sisters, Jackie Frost and Andrea Howell, both of Ignacio; grandparents, Henry and Wanda Stoneroad of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Michael Charles Krier

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at 1614 County Road 513 in Ignacio for Michael Charles Krier, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango of alcoholism. He was 46. Cremation has taken place.

Mr. Krier was born April 2, 1955, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.

He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Tate of Albuquerque, N.M., Margaret Simon of Ignacio and Cathy Wilson of Durango; his stepfather, Gilbert Carrell; numerous nephews and nieces; and one grandnephew.

Inger Wyse

A memorial service was held in Santa Barbara, Calif. for Inger Wyse, a former Durango resident, who died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, in Santa Barbara, Calif. of a heart attack. She was 32.

Ms. Wyse was a student at Fort Lewis College from 1988 to 1992. She loved animals, hiking, the ocean, fishing, 1970s music and convertibles.

She is survived by her parents, Butch and Brigetta Wyse; a sister, Katrina Wyse; and her fiance, Jeff Hepp, all of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Donations may be made in Ms. Wyse’s name to the Humane Society of La Plata County.

John R. Ritter, Sr.

John R. Ritter, Sr., of Millville, N.J. died on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2001, of natural causes. He was 89.

Mr. Ritter was born Dec. 5, 1911.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma.

He is survived by a son, John R. Ritter of Durango; three daughters, Alicia M. Hendricson of Millville, N.J., Barbara Joyce Hillman of Swedesboro, N.J., Margaret Frida Ritter of Collingswood, N.J.; 11 grandchildren, including Christopher D. Ritter of Durango; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2480 West 26th Ave., Suite 120B, Denver, CO., 80211, or Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1550 Main Ave., Durango, CO. 81302.

George Ernest Davis

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for George Ernest Davis, a longtime area resident, who died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Albuquerque, N.M., following complications from a heart attack. He was 82.

Mr. Larry Behrens will officiate. Burial will follow at Florida Cemetery near Durango.

Mr. Davis was born Sept. 1, 1919, in Spring Creek, near Ignacio. He married Bessie M. Harris on June 30, 1943, in Columbia, S.C.

He graduated from Durango High School and attended Fort Lewis College for one year before World War II broke out. He joined the U.S. Army and, with his wife, was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C. After the war, the couple returned to Durango, where Mr. Davis ranched and worked at the VCA vanadium mill. He also served as the state water commissioner for Lemon Dam and the Florida Mesa area until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie Davis of Durango; three daughters, Melba Ann Davis of Albuquerque, N.M., Barbara Lee Glass of Monte Vista, Colo., and Elizabeth K. Reid of Pagosa Springs; two sons, George E. Davis Jr. and Robbie Davis, both of Durango; two sisters, Elizabeth Shoemaker of Yuba City, Calif., and Mary Helen "Peggy" Davis of Central Point, Ore.; a brother, Robert A. Davis of Durango; two aunts, Ethel Ancell of Ignacio and Maxine Payne of Deer Trail, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Marian Dorothy Thompson

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa, Colo., for Marian Dorothy Thompson, a former area resident, who died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at the Evergreen Nursing Home in Alamosa, Colo. She was 91.

Interment will follow services in the San Luis Valley Cemetery in Monte Vista, Colo. Friends may call Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thompson was born Feb. 14, 1910, in Franklin, Neb. She married Maurice Thompson on Feb. 17, 1933, in Nebraska.

Mrs. Thompson graduated from Hastings College in Nebraska and taught school in Nebraska, Saguache, Colo., Pagosa Springs and Limon, Colo. After 30 years of teaching, she and her husband retired and lived at Vallecito Lake until 1993. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson were members of the First United Methodist Church in Durango. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and reading.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Thompson.

She is survived by a son, Ronald Thompson of Bayfield; three daughters, Patricia Kinley of Mosca, Colo., Sandra Bodley of Los Banos, Calif., and Joyce Muhic of Rye, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Azucena M. 'Susie' Silva

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Azucena M. "Susie" Silva, a member of the Women’s Army Corps of the U.S. Army, who died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Durango. She was 79.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos C.R. of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate at services. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday and Tuesday at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Silva was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Durango. She married Jose Pablo Silva on Oct. 28, 1949, in Aztec. Mrs. Silva enlisted in the WAC U.S. Army in 1943, in Salt Lake City.

She and her husband, Jose, owned and operated a restaurant/gas station and ranch in Chimney Rock. Mrs. Silva has worked for City Cleaners, The Durango Herald and was a waitress at Western Steak House for many years.

She is survived by two sons, Baldamar Silva of San Pedro, Calif., and Leonard Silva of San Antonio, Texas; four daughters, Martha Schackleford of Prescott, Ariz., Paula Silva of Durango, Loretta Silva of Durango, and Priscilla Wilson of Durango; a sister, Victoria Householder of Durango; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Pablo Silva, in March 2000; a daughter, Ramona G. Polk; a son, Chriseldo Silva; and an infant daughter, Azucena Barry.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango CO 81301.

Emily S. Billings

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church for Emily S. Billings, a lifelong area resident, who died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 92.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate. Burial will follow at Hermosa Cemetery.

Mrs. Billings was born July 6, 1909, in Durango. She graduated from Durango High School in 1926, then attended a teacher’s college in Greeley, where she received a teaching certificate. She taught in one-room schools at Waterfall and Cottonwood until she married Herbert Billings in 1934 in Durango.

Mrs. Billings was a member of the Animas Valley Grange, a 4-H leader, a charter member of the Animas Valley Garden Club and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by six daughters, Clara Mae Mason of Farmington, Ruth Shock of Durango, Mary Franchini of Cortez, Jan Thompson of Durango, Barbara Berkshire of Portland, Ore., and Julie Ellison of Farmington; a son, Herb Billings of Jacksonville, Ill.; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

James M. Primrose Jr.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for James M. Primrose Jr., who died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at his home in Durango of natural causes. He was 69.

A reception will be held after the service at the American Legion, 878 East Second Ave. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary in Durango.

Mr. Primrose was born Oct. 1, 1932, in Colorado Springs. He studied agriculture and animal husbandry at Arizona State University, and he rode broncos to pay for his college tuition. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Primrose was a member of the Elks Lodge, the American Quarter Horse Association, Rotary International, Toastmasters, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a leader in 4-H and the Future Farmers of America.

He is survived by a daughter, Jaimi Primrose of Sequim, Wash.; three sons, James (Dan) Primrose of Scottsdale, Ariz., Steven Primrose of Falls Church, Va., and Thomas Primrose of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.
