Irene Maude Rea

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary for Irene Maude Rea, a lifelong area resident, who died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 94.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Burial will occur at Florida Cemetery near Durango.

Mrs. Rea was born Feb. 24, 1907, on the family ranch near Falfa on Florida Mesa. She and her husband, Paul S. Rea, had a ranch that adjoined her parents’ property. She helped with the farm chores and had a large garden. She once worked in the kitchen at Basin Livestock Sale Barn.

Mrs. Rea was preceded in death by her husband and by grandson Troy E. Craig.

She is survived by a son, Walter C. Rea of Durango; two daughters, Joyce P. Craig of Durango and Virginia Snodgrass of Springdale, Ark.; four granddaughters, La Rea Dell Craig and Linda Hancock, both of Durango, Jeanette Piazza of Springdale, Ark., and Marilyn Nasky of Cedar Park, Texas; four grandsons, Robert Rea, Kenny Rea and Joel Craig, all of Durango, and Paul Snodgrass of Lowell, Ark.; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eugenia M. 'Jean' Rapiejko

Eugenia M. "Jean" Rapiejko, a former nurse’s aide and psychiatric aide, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 86.

No services are planned. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Rapiejko was born in Camden, N.J., on March 31, 1915. She married John Bernard Rapiejko on Sept. 14, 1941.

She was primarily a homemaker during their 33-year marriage, but in later years trained and worked as a nurse’s aide and psychiatric aide. She moved to Durango after the death of her husband in 1974. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and one infant brother.

She is survived by a son, John A. Rapiejko of Durango; two grandsons, John Rapiejko II of Glendale, Ariz., and Andrew Rapiejko of Boulder, Colo.; and a sister, Carol Gauthier of Providence, R.I.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Columba Catholic Church, 1830 E. Second Ave., Durango, or Four Corners Health Care Center, 2911 Junction St., Durango, CO 81301.

Joseph V. Forleo

Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at St. Columba Catholic Church for Joseph V. Forleo, a longtime Durango resident who died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, in Surprise, Ariz., after suffering a stroke. He was 86.

Interment at Greenmount Cemetery will follow. A gathering for family and friends will be held at the Senior Center at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

Mr. Forleo was born Dec. 8, 1914, in Terlizzi, Italy. He immigrated to the United States from Naples through Ellis Island at age 6 before moving to Norwich, Conn. He subsequently moved to New York City, where he married Mae Cinelli on April 14, 1940.

Mr. Forleo lived in Ossining, N.Y., for 34 years, raising a family, owning a restaurant and bar, a bowling alley and a print shop. He moved to Durango in 1978. He won the Seniors Golf Tournament at Hillcrest in 1982. He created the Make Believe Bandstand at the Durango-La Plata Senior Center and played music via tapes and CDs for senior dances for several years.

Mr. Forleo is survived by his wife, Mae Forleo; a daughter, Barbara Bishop of Bayfield; a son, James Forleo of Durango; a brother, Leonard Forleo of Connecticut; two sisters, Mary Gressett and Rina Focareta, both of California; five grandchildren, Steven Rumore and Joshua Rumore, both of Bayfield, Talia Kosh of New Orleans, Leah Johnson of Hawaii and Sara Forleo of Kansas City, Kan.; and one great-grandchild.

Richard H. ‘Dick’ Houston

Richard H. "Dick" Houston, a former broadcast engineer at several Four Corners radio stations, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Pike’s Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs from complications after surgery for a broken hip. He was 80.

No memorial service is planned.

Mr. Houston was born in Anniston, Ala. He served in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. He married Barbara A. Houston. They lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Richardson, Texas. They moved to Durango in 1973.

Mr. Houston worked for radio stations including KIUP, KDGO and KSUT. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and gave much of his time to service organizations through Volunteers of America.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara.

He is survived by two sons, Richard W. Houston of Philadelphia and Robert N. Houston of Colorado Springs; and one granddaughter.

Minnette MacDonald

There will be a private burial at Greenmount Cemetery for Minnette MacDonald, a longtime Bayfield resident, who died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 98.

Ms. MacDonald was born Jan. 22, 1903, in Cripple Creek, Colo. She worked as a secretary throughout her life in Washington, D.C., California and locally at Mesa Verde National Park.

She also worked at the Ignacio and Bayfield post offices. She and her sister Helen MacDonald donated land to and supported the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Bayfield.

She is the last survivor of her family.

Shelly Davis

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 2 Hilltop Circle for Shelly Davis, a Durango High School student, who died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in a car accident near Durango. She was 17.

Burial will occur Saturday in Beaver, Utah.

Ms. Davis was born June 6, 1984, in Beaver, Utah. She enjoyed drawing and art, the outdoors, and music.

She is survived by her father Kelly Davis of Breen; her mother ReNea Kessock of Las Vegas, Nev.; her stepmother Laura Davis of Breen; two sisters, Shannon Davis of Las Vegas, Nev., and Morgan Davis of Breen; a brother, Ben Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.

Claudia Burleigh Diehl

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Claudia Burleigh Diehl, a lifelong Durango resident, who died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center of natural causes. She was 87.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Diehl was born Feb. 28, 1914, in Durango. She married Walter Lewis Diehl on Nov. 4, 1975, in Durango.

She was a bookkeeper for many years with Durango Dodge and then worked at Durango Savings and Loan. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Diehl was a local history buff and a third-generation Durangoan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter.

She is survived by her stepdaughter Dorothy Carnine of Angora, Neb.; four stepsons, Walter Diehl, Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif., William Diehl of Wilcox, Ariz., Charles Diehl of Yreka, Calif., Raymond Diehl of Tucson, Ariz.; a niece, Janet Morris of Durango; three nephews, Dan Long of Durango, Rick Lone of Portland, Ore., Hugh Burleigh of Oakland, Calif.; a cousin, David Adin of Durango; 13 step-grandchildren; and 6 step-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Animas Museum, P.O. Box 3384, Durango, CO 81302.

Dustin Jeremy Eppich

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Dustin Jeremy Eppich, a lifelong area resident, who died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in Durango. He was 20.

Rev. Timothy Evers will officiate. There will be cremation.

Mr. Eppich was born June 26, 1981, in Durango. He grew up in the Mancos area and attended Mancos High School. He worked in construction and liked roping, fishing and the outdoors.

He is survived by his father, Tom Eppich of Mancos; his mother, Karen Anderson of Lovell, Wyo.; a sister, Anya Eppich of Mancos; a grandmother, Genevieve Eppich of Mancos; a grandfather, Marvin Billings of San Bernardino, Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Eppich committed suicide.

Arthur Kenneth (Ken) Shahan

No services are planned for Arthur Kenneth "Ken" Shahan, a Durango native, who died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at his home in Laguna Beach, Calif.

Mr. Shahan was born July 8, 1945, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1963 and attended Fullerton College in Fullerton, Calif. He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Shahan is survived by his wife, Julie Shahan of Laguna Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Elyse Shahan of Laguna Beach, Calif.; his mother, Olive Shahan of Durango; three sisters, Jeanne Conway of Arvada, Colo., Scoop Cassel of Newport Beach, Calif., and Katheryn Tuberty of Vacaville, Calif.; three brothers, Stuart Shahan of Plano, Texas; Philip Shahan of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and Steven Shahan of San Jose, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronald J. Morrison

A graveside inurnment service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Florida Cemetery for Ronald J. Morrison, a former Durango resident, who died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at his home in Firestone, Colo. He was 72.
