Joan Conant Edwards
Feb. 17, 1997

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Crist Mortuary Chapel in Boulder, Colo., for Joan Conant Edwards, a former Durango resident, who died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, in Boulder from natural causes. She was 71.

The Rev. Don Henderson will officiate at services. Burial will be at Green Mountain Cemetery.

Mrs. Edwards was born March 31, 1926, in Flushing, N.Y. She married John (Jack) D. Edwards July 4, 1946, in New York. She lived in Boulder since 1991 and lived in Durango before moving there.

Mrs. Edwards received her master's degree in English from Fordham University in The Bronx, N.Y. and a master's in English literature from Manhattanville, N.Y. She was a retired high school honor's English teacher in New York and Houston.
She was a member of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in Boulder.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband, John, of Boulder; two sons, Dr. John D. Edwards of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Dr. Charles F. Edwards of Rancho Bernardo, Calif.; three daughters, Heather Lalanne of Southport, Conn., Hope Stanton Edwards of Lewisville, Texas, and Nell Davidson Edwards of Gettysburg, Penn.; and 14 grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 1526 Spruce St., Boulder, CO 80303 and Boulder Senior Foundation, 909 Arapahoe, Boulder, CO 80303.

Marie Patricia Hill
Feb. 16, 1998

Mass was celebrated Feb. 19, 1998, in Glenwood Springs, Colo., for Marie Patricia Hill, who died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Glen Valley Care Center in Glenwood Springs. She was 78.

Burial was at Rosebud Cemetery.

Mrs. Hill was born Aug. 10, 1919, in Fargo, N.D. She graduated from Longmont High School and attended Fort Lewis College and Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs.

She married Gordon Eugene Hill Sept. 26, 1940, in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Hill belonged to St. Anthony’s Circle of St. Stephen’s Altar Society and St. Columba Catholic School’s Mother’s Club.

She served as president of both organizations. She was a 4-H leader and a Junior Great Books leader.

In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughters, Catherine Bullock of Zuni, N.M., Jackie Durrett of Glenwood Springs, Margaret Mortensen of Silt, Colo., and Patty Hill of Grand Junction, Colo.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Melanoma Research, Colorado/Rocky Mountain Division, 2255 S. Oneida, Denver, CO 80224.

Marguerite Mary Paulek
Feb. 15, 1998

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Feb. 28 at St. Columba Catholic Church for Marguerite Mary Paulek, who died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, in Durango. She was 93.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Rosary service will be 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at Hood Mortuary Chapel.

Mrs. Paulek was born March 29, 1904, in Durango, and was a lifetime resident of the area. She and her husband, Victor Anton Paulek ranched on the Big Stick Mesa.

Mrs. Paulek was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, the Breen Grange, La Plata Pomona Grange and the Colorado State Grange Association.

Mrs. Paulek was a member of the CowBelles and one of the first members of the Durango School District 9-R school board upon its formation.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Anton Paulek May 6, 1996.

Survivors include her son, Grant Paulek of Farmington, N.M.; her daughter, Marilyn Vitali of Denver; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Julia M. Achierno
Feb. 14, 1998

Burial services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Santa Fe National Cemetery for Julia M. Achierno of Bayfield who died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at Abernathy's Care Home in Bayfield. She was 93.

Mrs. Achierno was born Feb. 19, 1904, in Albuquerque. She moved to Bayfield from New Mexico two years ago to be near her son.

Mrs. Achierno worked at Kistler Collister in Albuquerque, where she became head buyer. She later moved to Denver where she met and married Louis Rocco Achierno. Mrs. Achierno was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Santa Maria No. 317, in Albuquerque.

She is survived by her son, Fredrick Achierno of Ignacio; and grandchildren Alicia and Jeffrey Achierno of Ignacio.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Masses be said in Mrs. Achierno's memory.

John Edward Dever Jr.
Feb. 13, 1998

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church for John Edward Dever Jr., a Fort Lewis College professor and former Durango School District 9-R school board president, who died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center from cancer. He was 65.

Mr. Dever was born Sept. 24, 1932, in Camden, N.J. He served in the United States Air Force as meteorology instructor until 1956. He taught biology at Fort Lewis College for more than 30 years. He served two terms as 9-R school board president from 1987 to 1995.

Mr. Dever was an avid baseball fan. He was president and later state commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball organization in the 1980s and early 1990s.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ann Dever of Durango; two daughters, Suzanne Beth Dever of Farmington, and Sara Kathryn Dever of Durango; two sons, John Edward Dever III of Durango, and William Arthur Dever of Houston; three stepsons, Christian Robert Watson, Timothy Adam Watson, and Patrick Matthew Watson; and, two granddaughters, Chantel Alyssa Albo and Brianna Marie Dever.

Beatrice 'Bea' Motz
Feb. 13, 1998

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Beatrice "Bea" Motz who died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, in Durango. She was 86.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services.

Mrs. Motz was born April 28, 1911, in San Diego before moving with her family to La Jara. She married Douglas F. Motz Sept. 9, 1933. Together they operated a produce business in Colorado and Arizona.

Mrs. Motz was the first woman elected to the La Jara Board of Trustees. In 1980 they moved to Durango, where she volunteered at the Methodist Thrift shop and participated in the Bible study fellowship.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas, of Durango; a son, Douglas, of Aztec; and three grandchildren.

Charles A. Dressing
Feb. 13, 1998

Charles A. Dressing died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood, Ky.

Mr. Dressing was the retired owner of Graden’s Shoe Store, part of Graden’s Mercantile, in Durango. He and his wife moved from Durango to Crescent Springs, Ky., in 1988.

Mr. Dressing served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031 in Durango.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his daughter Michele Anderson June 1, 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Dressing of Crescent Springs, Ky.; his son, Mike Dressing of Fort Mill, S.C.; daughters, Denise Gradel of Lubbock, Texas, Melanie Dressing of Durango and Charlene Sutherlin of Bayfield; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 201 E. 20th St., Covington, KY 41014.

Stella Thompson
Feb. 10, 1998

Services were held Feb. 13 at the Smith Funeral Home in Sugarcreek, Ohio, for Stella Thompson, who died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, in Walnut Hills Nursing Home at Walnut Creek, Ohio, after a brief illness. She was 89.

The Rev. Gail E. Thompson officiated. Burial was at the Eastlawn Cemetery at Sugarcreek.

Mrs. Thompson was born April 13, 1908, in Manitou Springs, Colo. She married Gail E. Thompson Dec. 24, 1937.

Mrs. Thompson retired as a school teacher after 22 years. She was a member of the Bible Missionary Church of Durango.

Survivors include her husband, Gail E. Thompson; daughters, Barbara Dunn of Stebbins, Alaska, and Shirley King of Summerfield, Ohio; son, Keith Thompson of Dundee, Ohio; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Wayne Brewer of Aztec, N.M.
