Tead R. Russell
April 23, 1998

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bayfield Church of Christ for Tead R. Russell, a longtime Ignacio rancher, who died Wednesday, April 23, 1998, in Durango. He was 86.

Gene Chapin will officiate at services. Visitation will be 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary. Burial will be at Bayfield Cemetery.

Mr. Russell was born March 23, 1912, in Aspermont, Texas. He lived near Ignacio for 64 years. He married Juanita Kinslow in 1933, at Syracuse, Kan.

Mr. Russell was a member of the Bayfield Church of Christ. He was a rancher throughout his life and also worked at the Vanidium Mill in Durango and the helium plant in Shiprock, N.M.

He retired from El Paso Gas in 1976. He enjoyed riding horses, hunting and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita, of Ignacio; three daughters, June Haga of Bayfield, Verda Manning of St. George, Utah, and Connie Lloyd of Bayfield; a sister, Verda Hamilton of Julesburg, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Bayfield Church of Christ building fund, 2011 U. S. Highway 160B, Bayfield, CO 81122.

Dr. Charles L. Shafer
April 22, 1998

Memorial services will be May 9 at Santa Maria de la Paz Community Church in Santa Fe, N.M., for Dr. Charles L. Shafer, who died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at his home in Santa Fe. He was 79.

Dr. Shafer was a longtime resident of Los Alamos and Santa Fe, and spent summers in Durango. He was born in 1919 in Fayette, Mo. He earned his bachelor of arts degree at the University of Missouri in 1941 and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1946. He completed his internship and residency in St. Louis.

Dr. Shafer married Kathleen "Kay" Meissner and moved to Los Alamos, N.M., in 1947. After completing his fellowship in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., he returned to Los Alamos in 1954 and began practicing medicine.

Throughout his 20 years of private practice at Los Alamos Medical Center, Dr. Shafer served as chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and chief of staff and director for the General Practice Residency Training Program.

He retired in 1974 from the hospital and then served as a staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, department of occupational medicine until 1982 and as consultant until 1987 when he retired.

Dr. Shafer’s love of the mountains and fly fishing led to his founding in 1981 of Alpine Ranch Reclamation Inc. He worked in wilderness and environmental conservation and renewal, including trout fishery and wildlife habitat enhancement. Most of his summer work was in the Durango and Pagosa Springs area. His stream rehabilitation projects are being continued through his sons.

Dr. Shafer is survived by his wife, Kay; sons, Chas Shafer of Durango, Greg Shafer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Capt. John Shafer, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps; daughters, Dr. Beverly Shafer of Boston, Mass., and Dr. Diane Shafer of Albuquerque, N.M.; and five grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Los Alamos Medical Center for Cancer Research in the name of Dr. Charles Shafer, Box 995, Los Alamos Council on Cancer, Los Alamos, NM 87544.

Martha Luella Clark ‘Granny’ Goff
April 21, 1998

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today at Greenmount Cemetery for Martha Luella Clark ‘Granny’ Goff, who died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Saint Joseph’s Manor in Florence, Colo. She was 81.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at 4 p.m. May 3 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cañon City, Colo.

Mrs. Goff was born April 1, 1917, in Hesperus. She married James Russell Goff in Cortez Jan. 1, 1935.

Mrs. Goff was a homemaker and an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She moved to Cañon City’s Royal Gorge Manor apartments in 1980 from Durango and resided there until January of this year.

She was preceded in death by her husband and by two daughters.

Survivors include her children, William Goff of Bloomfield, N.M., Martha Smith of Aztec, N.M., and Thomas Goff of Florence, Colo., formerly of Durango; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and sister, Laura Nelson of Salida, Colo.

Mary Margaret ‘Margy’ Peterson
April 20, 1998

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Cope Memorial Chapel in Aztec, N.M., for Mary Margaret Peterson, a Bloomfield resident, who died Monday, April 20, 1998, at home from lung cancer. She was 71.

Jack Wheat will officiate at services. A lunch at the Masonic Lodge Hall, 204 N. Main Ave., Aztec, will follow the services. There was cremation.

Mrs. Peterson was born April 25, 1926, in Pagosa Springs. She married Paul W. Peterson in 1946 in Durango.

She went to school at Upper Piedra Community School, and graduated from Pagosa Springs High School and from secretarial school in Denver. She was an active member of Rebekah’s for several years and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed cooking, ceramics, gardening, fishing, horses, ranching, and her family and friends. She helped her son Dale with his life insurance and mutual funds business for 10 years.

She is survived by her husband, Paul, of Bloomfield, Colo.; two sons, Dale and Dean, of Bloomfield; one sister, Ivy Gaines, of Durango; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to NWNM Hospice Bereavement Program, P.O. Box 3336, Farmington, NM 87499.

Juan B. Rodriquez
April 19, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Juan B. Rodriquez, who died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center. He was 90.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. A Rosary service will be 6 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Mr. Rodriquez was born April 4, 1908, in La Gina, N.M. He worked for San Juan Lumber before his retirement.

Mr. Rodriquez was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mestas Rodriquez and by a son, George Rodriquez in January 1998.

Survivors include his sons, Joe Rodriquez, Tony Rodriquez and Alex Rodriquez, all of Durango; daughter, Sylvia Lucero of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Marion Pink ‘Pinky’ Mounts
April 19, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday for Marion Pink "Pinky" Mounts, who died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center. He was 68.

Location of the services will be announced today. The Rev. Robert Kujath will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Mounts was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Clinton, Okla. He married Georgine Driever April 20, 1953.

Mr. Mounts graduated from Wellington High School in Wellington, Texas, in 1947 and attended Texas A&M in Arlington, Texas, for one year. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Campaign 7th Infantry, as instructor at NATO Intelligence School in Oberammergau, Germany, and as instructor at Mountain 2nd Ranger Co. in Dahlonega, Ga.

He worked at Mercy Hospital, 9-R School District, Tamarron Resort and Sunnyside Metals in Silverton.

Mr. Mounts was a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader for approximately 25 years and a leader for the junior and senior high school youth fellowships at the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Georgine Driever Mounts, of Durango; sons, Richard, Michael and Dave Mounts, all of Durango, and Ronnie and Doug Mounts of Phoenix; daughters, Geriann Campbell of Durango, Cindy Gilbert of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Claudia Tillman of Wheatland, Wyo.; sister, Billie Wilson of Show Low, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Pine Valley Foursquare Church, P.O. Box 740, Bayfield, CO 81122.

Cavanaugh O’John, Sr.
April 17, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Nuuciu Bible Church in Ignacio for Cavanaugh O’John, Sr., who died Friday, April 17, 1998, in Denver, after a long illness. He was 54.

The Rev. Robert Griggs will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. O’John was born Dec. 24, 1943, in Ignacio. He had spent the past 35 years with his wife, Eva Lee.

Mr. O’John had spent years working as a seasonal custom farmer for the Southern Ute Tribe.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Lee O’John of Denver; children, Cecilia, Cavanaugh, Jr., and Amos O’John, all of Denver; brother, Roy O’John of Ignacio; sister, Olive O’John of Ignacio and four grandchildren.
