Bertha Leona Thompson
May 10, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Bertha Leona Thompson, who died Sunday, May 10, 1998, in Grants, N.M. She was 80.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at the Bayfield Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Thompson was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Shelton, Iowa. She moved to Durango from Leadville, Colo., in 1954 so that her children could receive a proper education.

Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester C. Thompson.

Survivors include her daughter, Gail Jaramillo of Grants, N.M.; son, Richard Thompson of Tucson, Ariz.; sister, Cleta Snow of Bayfield; brothers, Wade Woolsey of Pagosa Springs, Loren Woolsey of Silt, Colo., Adam Woolsey and Harold Woolsey; and five grandchildren.

Jack Clinton Bessee
May 9, 1998

No services are planned for Jack Clinton Bessee, who died Saturday, May 9, 1998, in Grand Junction, Colo. He was 77.

Mr. Bessee was born March 13, 1921, in St. Maries, Idaho. He worked as a record keeper for Shell Oil Company in the Durango area for many years. He then went to work for the U.S. Post Office until his retirement.

Mr. Bessee was a disabled veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Sturman Bessee of Durango; sons, Clinton Bessee and Brian Bessee, both of Durango; daughter, Margery Young of Durango; brother, Don Bessee of Boise, Idaho; and grandson, Ken Shafer of Durango.

Memorial donations may be made to any charity.

Wilfred LeRoy ‘Bill’ Binger
May 9, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Wilfred LeRoy "Bill" Binger, who died Saturday, May 9, 1998, in Durango. He was 86.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Binger was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He married Maxine Faye Nutt April 7, 1940, in Pueblo, Colo. They moved to Durango in 1957.

Mr. Binger was a farmer and rancher. He also owned and operated Binger’s Automotive in Durango for many years. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and football.

Mr. Binger was a past member of the Durango Elks Lodge and active in the 55 Plus Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine in 1973. He then married Isabelle Hotter-Mason Jan. 12, 1974, in Durango.

Survivors include his wife, Isabelle Binger of Durango; daughter, Donna Lee Flora of Farmington, N.M.; sons, Dennis LeRoy Binger of Aztec, N.M., and William Fredrick Binger of Durango; step-daughter, Betty Jo McConnell of Clovis, N.M.; step-sons, Roy Mason and Jerry Mason, both of Farmington, N.M., and Johnny Mason of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister, Helen James of McGallen, Texas; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Allen Norris Carel
May 7, 1998

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Ignacio Baptist Indian Mission for Allen Norris Carel, a lifelong Ignacio resident, who died Thursday May 7, 1998, in Durango. He was 80.

The Rev. Kelly Winlock will officiate at services. A wake will be 6 p.m. today at the family’s home. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Carel was born July 17, 1917, in Ignacio. He married Artie Ketchun in 1946 in Aztec, N.M.

He served in the United States Army during World War II where he received the Purple Heart and other commendations. Mr. Carel was a farmer and rancher throughout his life. He was a member of the Southern Ute Tribe.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

He is survived by his children, Glenda Price, Vernest Carel and Frank Carel all of Ignacio; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mary M. Barela
May 7, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Mary M. Barela, who died Thursday, May 7, 1998, in Durango. She was 87.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be today until 5 p.m. and from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hood Mortuary. Rosary service will be 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Mrs. Barela was born May 13, 1910, in San Rafael, N.M. She married Willie Barela April 30, 1928. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Barela was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of Senior Citizen of Sacred Heart Church and Cursillo of Sacred Heart Church.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Lalo Barela and Demecio Barela.

Survivors include her husband, Willie Barela of Durango; daughter, Phyllis Maestas of Aurora, Colo.; son, Tony Barela of Durango; brother, Arturo Murrietta of Thoreau, N.M.; sister, Isadora Ortiz of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Herbert E. Tishner
May 5, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Allison Community Church for Herbert E. Tishner, who died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center. He was 90.

The Rev. Jeffrey and Laura Finch will officiate. Burial will be at the Allison Tiffany Cemetery. A reception will follow the services at the church for friends and family. Visitation will be noon to 8:30 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Tishner was born Nov. 8, 1907, in Noblesville, Ind. He and his wife, Rachel built, owned and operated the Elkhorn Restaurant until their retirement when they moved to Arboles.

Mr. Tishner was a 32nd degree Mason at the Masonic Lodge No. 114, a member of the Eastern Star No. 133 and a member of the Oddfellows Lodge No. 122, all in Pagosa Springs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Tishner in 1986.

Survivors include his daughter, Betty Joanne Lamke of Oxford and various relatives.

Joe Thompson Brillhart
May 2, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Durango Baptist Temple for Joe Thompson Brillhart, who died Saturday, May 2, 1998, from injuries suffered in an auto accident near Ignacio. He was 17.

Mr. Brillhart was born Sept. 24, 1980, in Phoenix, Ariz. He was very active in rodeo and bull riding. Mr. Brillhart also was very active in Future Farmers of America at Bayfield High School. He enjoyed skiing and surfing.

Survivors include his parents, Michael and Mary Brillhart of Bayfield; father, Steven Thompson Green of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Jennifer Brillhart of Bayfield; grandparents, Ray and Darlene Brillhart of Bayfield; great-grandmothers, Ruby Brillhart of Pueblo, Colo., and Wilma Ridder of Burlington, Colo.; and nephew, Jasper Lane McCoy of Bayfield.

Benjamin Brian Slade
May 2, 1998

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Masonic Temple in Battle Mountain, Nev., for Benjamin Brian Slade, who died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at his home in Battle Mountain from multiple organ system failure. He was 40.

Mr. Slade was born Feb. 6, 1958, in Durango. He moved to Battle Mountain in 1988. He married Debbie Gurule in Reno May 27, 1989. Mr. Slade was a welder by trade, last working for Brant’s Welding until 1997.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive father, Donald Slade.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie; son, Brady James "BJ" Sutherlin of Cortez; daughters, Lena, Amanda and Amber, all of Battle Mountain, Nev., and Sasha of Durango; brother, Michael Slade of Colorado; sisters, Melanie Moore and Amy Rayburn, both of Colorado; father, Beamen Talbot of Colorado; mother, Carmen Slade of Colorado; and two grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Slade family, Norwest Bank c/o Lena Doerr, 1000 Broyles Ranch Road, Battle Mountain, NV 89820.
