Martha Manilla Everroad

Private memorial services will be held for Martha Manilla Everroad, who died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at her home in Pagosa Springs. She was 78.

There will be cremation.

Mrs. Everroad was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Lakes, Wis.

Mrs. Everroad wished to thank the hospital staff, home health and her friends from Jevohah’s Witnesses who helped her during her time in Pagosa Springs and while she was ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, and by her son.

Mrs. Everroad is survived by a daughter, Judith; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and adopted families; the Chuck Taylor family of Pagosa Springs and the Leonard Hoffschneider family of Pagosa Springs.

B.T. 'Bud' Griffith

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for B.T. "Bud" Griffith, who died Monday, March 22, 1999, in Durango. He was 79.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Griffith was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Durango. He spent his entire adult life serving the area as a successful rancher, businessman and volunteer.

Mr. Griffith served on numerous city and county boards and commissions, including: The Durango Chamber of Commerce Board, Durango City Council, Airport Commission, City of Durango Finance Advisory Board, Florida River Water Conservancy District Board and Colorado Cattlemen's Association.

Mr. Griffith was appointed by the governor of Colorado to serve many years on the Colorado Highway Commission, and he was constantly fighting for highway construction funding in the Durango area.

He served the community in numerous volunteer capacities. He was an active member of the Durango Rotary Club for more than 40 years, serving as president and treasurer; a longtime member of the Fort Lewis College Foundation; and a member of the Fort Lewis College Booster Club.

Mr. Griffith has been recognized by many organizations for his service and contributions and for dedicating his entire life to the quality of life in the Durango area.

Survivors include his wife, Noni Griffith of Durango; two sons, Ron Griffith of Littleton and Bob Griffith of Durango; a daughter, Karen Griffith Peters of Boulder; a sister, Velena Eggleston of Durango and nine grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301 or to the Fort Lewis College Foundation, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301.

Edward P. Roby

Memorial services will be 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall for Edward P. Roby, who died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, in Durango. He was 61.

Interment of ashes will follow at Greenmount Cemetery at 2 p.m., followed by lunch and a reception at the American Legion. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Roby was born Aug. 4, 1937, in Boston. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. Roby was employed as a truck driver.

Mr. Roby was the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and past commander of the American Legion and a member of the Durango Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda D. (Smillie) Roby of Durango; four sons; one daughter; one stepdaughter; 10 grandchildren; two brothers and five sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or to the American Legion.

William B. Robb

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fort Collins for William B. Robb, who died Monday, March 22, 1999, in Indio, Calif. He was 76.

Mr. Robb was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Pueblo. He grew up in Durango, was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and graduated from Durango High School in 1940. He married Eleanor Hogan in 1946 at St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango.

Mr. Robb served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and received architectural degrees from M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass., and the University of Colorado in Boulder. He started an architectural practice in Fort Collins in 1953. During his 34-year career there, his firm won awards for designing numerous churches, schools and municipal buildings in Fort Collins.

In 1987, the Colorado North Chapter of the American Institute of Architects presented Mr. Robb with its Distinguished Professional Service Award and recognized him as a "living treasure" for his successful architectural practice and community service in Fort Collins, particularly in the education and health care sectors. In 1987, Mr. Robb also received a special award of appreciation by the Poudre School District Board of Education for his professional and private contributions to education in Fort Collins.

As an architect, Mr. Robb also designed and supervised the addition to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Durango, completed in 1957.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Hogan Robb of Fort Collins; five daughters, Susan Dobkins and Chris Goold, both of Durango, Cindi Monroe and Pam Downing, both of Fort Collins, and Joanne Staats of Brookline, Vt.; one son, Bruce Robb of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and School, P.O. Box 502, Fort Collins, CO 80522 or to the Hospice of Larimer County, 7604 Colland Drive, Fort Collins, CO 80525.

George A. King

A summer memorial service is planned in Durango for George A. King, who died Saturday, March 20, 1999, in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 74.

Mr. King was born Jan. 15, 1925, in College Point, Long Island, N.Y., and grew up in Stamford, Conn.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served with a Marine fighter unit. He was involved in many campaigns in the South Pacific during World War II and was called back to service during the Korean War.

Mr. King earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture and master’s degree in archaeology at the University of Colorado in Boulder. After graduation, he participated in archaeological work throughout the Southwest, including Mesa Verde.

Mr. King began his architectural career in Denver and moved to Durango in 1964, where he worked in his practice on Main Avenue. He designed numerous buildings in the area, including work at Fort Lewis College, Rio Grande Land, 55 Plus Center, First National Bank, Durango Public Library, Methodist and Lutheran churches.

He served on the Colorado Planning Commission, Fort Lewis Foundation, and was a Library board member for many years. In 1997, he moved to Scottsdale where he continued to practice.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Jack King; two sisters, Dorthy Kane and Agnes Arnow; three daughters, Susan Kurtenbach of Oak Park, Ill., Judy Gillespie of Glenwood Springs and Beth King of Bluff, Utah; a son, Glen King of Arvada and seven grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.

James Sterling Duhs

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hesperus Baptist Church for James Sterling Duhs, a former Marvel resident, who died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at his home from cancer. He was 62.

His brother, William Duhs, will officiate at services. Burial will take place later next week at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Peoria, Ill.

Mr. Duhs was born Jan. 24, 1937, in Peoria before moving to Marvel. He married Vivienne "Tony" Duhs on July 4, 1992.

Mr. Duhs served in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a life member of the American Veterans Post 64 in Peoria, Ill. Mr. Duhs was employed with the Caterpillar Tractor Company for 30 years and retired in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Vivienne, of Marvel; four sons, James C. Duhs and Robert C. Duhs of Dunnellon, Fla., and William Duhs and David Neal of Peoria, Ill.; seven daughters, Christine Duhs-Baner of South Haven, Mich., Bonnie Merriman of Hana City, Ill., Linda Monari of Bartonville, Ill., Gail Duhs of Macomb, Ill., Renee Spradlin of Pekin, Ill., and Mary Williams and Jessie Hunter of Dunnellon, Fla.; two brothers, Rev. Robert Duhs of Brandon, Miss., and William Duhs of Marvel; and 18 grandchildren.

Letha E. Bell

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greenmount Cemetery for Letha E. Bell, who died Friday, March 19, 1999, in Durango. She was 92.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Bell was born Jan. 1, 1907, in Dillard, Mo. She lived in Missouri until 1944, when she moved to Pagosa Springs. She moved to Durango in 1961.

Mrs. Bell was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry William Bell.

Survivors include six daughters, Zelma "Dee" Peters and Margie Sittner, both of Durango, Lola Beal and Zola Adams, both of Farmington, Ola Headrick of Salem, Mo., and Betty Harris of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Owen Bell of Pagosa Springs and Lowell Bell of Durango; a brother, Orvile Chandler of St. Louis, Mo.; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Marie Catherine Malyon

Marie Catherine Malyon died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in Durango. She was 94.

Her request was for cremation. Private interment will be at Hermosa Cemetery.

Mrs. Malyon was born Dec. 30, 1904, in Lima, Ohio. She married Lawrence J. "Larry" Malyon in 1928.

They lived in San Jose, Calif., from 1946 until Mr. Malyon’s death in 1997. At that time, Mrs. Malyon moved to retire at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango to be near her family.

Mrs. Malyon was a member of the United Methodist Church of Willow Glen at San Jose, Calif., for all the years that she lived in California.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Alan Kent Malyon in 1988, and by her daughter, Beverly Marie Crue in 1997.

Survivors include four grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
