Ralph Edgar Benton

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Marvel Methodist Church in Marvel for Ralph Edgar Benton, a resident of Marvel since 1937 who died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, due to natural causes.

He was 95.

The Rev. Bud Rousset will officiate.

Mr. Benton was born July 9, 1904, in St. John, Kan. He graduated from St. John High School and was a radio man in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Mr. Benton was involved with the Marvel Grange and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by a sister, Ruth L. Candelaria of Yuma, Ariz.; a nephew, Cecil F. Benton of Durango; a niece, Joan Huskey of Marvel; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Benton’s name to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Nairn Ringueberg

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Nairn Ringueberg, a Durango resident who died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 84.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at services.

Mr. Ringueberg was born July 25, 1915, in Coronation, Alberta, Canada.

He was employed at Bell Helicopter Corp. in Texas as chief production development engineer. He moved with his family to Durango in 1973.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mona.

He is survived by three sons, Walt Ringueberg of Plano, Texas, and Bill and Eric Ringueberg of Durango; a daughter, Lucia Horther of Bloomfield, N.M.; and seven grandchildren.

Ruth M. Brown

CORTEZ – Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ertel Memorial Chapel for Ruth M. Brown, who died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 90.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 23, 1909, in Pueblo. She married Kenneth Brown June 21, 1951.

Mrs. Brown was a lifelong member of the P.E.O, a women’s educational organization, and was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Mancos. She was active in community affairs.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee O. Reddert.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Brown of Mancos; a daughter, Ronda Simpkins of Carlin, Nev.; two brothers, James L. Neeley of Cortez and Raymond Neeley of Farmington, N.M.; two sisters, Winifred Mallett of Rangely, Colo., and Geneva Cox of Mancos.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Roberta Ann Vickrey West

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Word of Life Christian Center in Farmington, N.M., for Roberta Ann Vickrey West, a Farmington resident, who died Feb. 26, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center. She was 64.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. George Ford will officiate at services. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ignacio Cemetery.

Mrs. West was born May 23, 1935, in Albuquerque.

She is survived by a son, Arlen Dale West of Farmington; daughters, Daleen Washington of Ignacio, Cheryl Stevens of Marvel, Kathleen McIlraith, Theresa Washington and Barbara Walker, all of Farmington; a brother Ikey Vickrey of Albuquerque; twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Wallace Manville Walter Schneider

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road in Durango, for Wallace Manville Walter Schneider, who died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Schneider was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on July 4, 1930. He served in Korea, earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse, and a master’s degree from the University of Southern Illinois.

Mr. Schneider taught physical education and coached wrestling and football at Shorewood High School in Shorewood, Wis., became assistant principal at Homestead High School in Mequon, Wis., and then became principal at Homestead High School in Randolph, Wis.

After retiring in 1988, Mr. Schneider and his wife, Sue, moved to Durango.

Mr. Schneider was preceded in death by his wife in 1995 and by his grandson.

He is survived by a daughter, Debra Rae; son, David Walter; his companion, Dottie Johnson; and grandchildren, Peter and Elizabeth.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice.

Leona Heffington

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield for Leona Heffington, a longtime Bayfield resident, who died Friday, February 25, 2000 in Durango. She was 81.

The cause of death was not available.

The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate at services. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery.

Mrs. Heffington was born June 15, 1918, in Belleville, Ark. She graduated from Belleville High School in 1936. She married Harvey Heffington in 1938 in Arkansas.

Mrs. Heffington moved to Bayfield in 1955 and was involved with the senior citizens’ group.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Ludwig of Bayfield; a daughter-in-law, Judy Heffington of Conifer, Colo.; three grandsons, Rick and Ron Ludwig of Bayfield and Mark Heffington of Arvada, Colo.; a granddaughter, Tracie Baker of Bayfield; three sisters, Elwanda Williams of Malvern, Ark., Lora George of Ola, Ark., and Ernestine Sugg of Sheridan, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Heffington was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, and son, Donald.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango 81301 or Calvary Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 336, Bayfield 81122.

Mary Taylor

A funeral was held in Cortez Thursday for Mary Taylor, Montezuma County’s oldest resident, who died Feb. 19, 2000.

She was 104.

Mrs. Taylor was born April 27, 1895, near Batesville, Ark., before moving in 1899 to Oklahoma. She began teaching school in 1921. In 1925, she married William Earl Taylor. Together they bought a dairy in Idaho in 1950. They moved to Cortez eight years later.

She is survived by a son, Earl Taylor of Bloomfield; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Joan L. Sackett

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Joan L. Sackett, a 24-year school teacher in Ignacio and Durango, who died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, in Durango from natural causes.

She was 77.

Chaplain Myron Darmour and Tony Nelson will officiate at services. Military Honors will immediately follow the funeral service.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Sackett was born on Nov. 9, 1922, to Cuthbert and Louise Sandstrom in Centerville, Iowa. She married H. Joe Sackett on August 17, 1945 in Monroe, La.

She attended Centerville Community College and the University of Minnesota before graduating from Fort Lewis College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education.

Mrs. Sackett served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1944 as a radio operator at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla.

She is survived by her husband, Joe, of Durango; two sons, James Sackett of Indianapolis, Ind., and John Sackett of Lyndonville, Vt.; two daughters, Judi Jones of Farmington, and Jann Smith of Ignacio; five grandsons, Clint Smith of Ignacio, Casey Coan of Farmington, Ben and Ian Sackett of Lyndonville, Vt., and Michael Sackett of Lexington, Ky.; six granddaughters, Cindy Phillips of Ignacio, Becky Cantebury of Ignacio, Lindsay Box of Ignacio, Lara Coan of Farmington, Lacie Deakin of Farmington, and Rachel Sackett of Indianapolis, Ind; and six great-grandchildren.
