Stanley Lee Grannis

Stanley Lee Grannis died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at his home in Mesquite, N.M. He was 65.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Grannis was born Jan. 12, 1935, in Monte Vista, Colo. He was a former resident of Durango.

Mr. Grannis’ son, David, was present for his death.

Other survivors include his mother, Ruby Lee Grannis of Durango and an uncle, Ben Smith of Durango.

Gertrude M. Stock Carver

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Langeland Climax Chapel in Climax, Mich., for Gertrude M. Stock Carver, who died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at her home in Durango after a battle with cancer. She was 91.

Burial will be at Roof Cemetery in Charleston Township, Mich.

Mrs. Carver was born June 29, 1908, in Pavilion Township, Mich. She married Chester G. Carver on Sept. 2, 1928. He preceded her in death June 26, 1994.

Mrs. Carver resided on the family farm near Climax, Mich., until relocating to Durango in 1994. She was a graduate of Western Michigan University in 1963.

Survivors include her sons, Richard Carver of Calumet, Mich., and Gerford Carver of Durango; her daughter, Verna Cerajewski of Durango; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Jeffrey Singer

A memorial service and life celebration will be held Saturday for Jeff Singer, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in the Mexican state of Sinaloa earlier this month. He was 37.

The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and the celebration of life will be at 6 p.m. at Backcountry Experience.

Mr. Singer was born Dec. 18, 1962, in Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was raised in Alliance, Ohio, and graduated from Miami University.

He moved to Durango in 1987 and was the manager of the Purgatory Sports store in downtown Durango before joining his parents at Backcountry Experience, Inc. as sales and marketing manager of the Durango store and Wild Mountain Outfitters in Santa Fe, N.M. An avid climber, skier and sea kayaker, Mr. Singer traveled extensively in Nepal, Thailand and Europe. He did a first ascent of the Chip and Dale towers in Utah.

He is survived by his parents, Dale and Kirk Singer of Durango; his brother Scott and sister-in-law Barbara of Durango; JoDee Singer of Durango; and an aunt, uncle, cousins and grandmother of Houston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Singer’s name may be made to Trails 2000, San Juan Mountain Association or the youth programs of Durango Nature Studies.

Gladys Lee Field Croonquist

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Covina, Calif., for Gladys Lee Field Croonquist, a Durango resident since 1993, who died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center.

She was 66.

Burial will be at Forest Lawn-Covina Hills Cemetery in California.

Mrs. Croonquist was born Dec. 22, 1933, in San Jose, Calif. She married Stanley M. Croonquist Jr., on June 27, 1954, at Palo Alto.

As a child, she lived in San Jose, Alhambra and Palo Alto, Calif. She graduated from high school in Palo Alto, Calif. She attended San Jose State College where she was active in women’s affairs and interpretive dance. She was active in the Hacienda Heights, Calif., Junior Women’s Club, the Republican Party and other civic groups.

She was a founding member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church of Hacienda Heights. An avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, she moved to Durango to retire in 1992.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley, of Durango; two sons, Stanley Eugene Croonquist of Riverside, Calif., and Richard John Croonquist of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; a daughter, Karen Lee Clear of Glendora, Calif.; her mother, Marjorie May Partington Field of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; one brother, Edward John Field of Woodbridge, Calif.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia M. Borders Acord

No services are planned at this time for Virginia M. Borders Acord, a 30-year resident of Durango, who died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 86.

There will be cremation at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mrs. Acord was born Aug. 22, 1913, in Dowagic, Mich. She married Alvin J. Acord on Jan. 7, 1954, at El Monte, Calif.

Mrs. Acord was a street-car operator in Los Angeles. She owned the Kaleco Kottage on Florida Road for 30 years, and she supported the La Plata County Humane Society, Children’s Society, Latter-Day Saints missionaries that were away from home, and the Bar-D Wranglers. She was active in local theater groups and was a member of the Christian Science Church.

She is survived by one step-daughter, Marilyn Acord Vreeken of Salt Lake City; one sister, Florine Walters of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Robert Lee Holcomb

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Allison-Tiffany Cemetery for Robert Lee Holcomb, a frequent visitor to Colorado, who died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Palm Desert, Calif., from cancer. He was 66.

The Rev. David McCaw will officiate at services. Burial will be at Allison-Tiffany Cemetery.

After graveside services, a dinner will be served at the Allison Community Presbyterian Church annex.

Mr. Holcomb was born Sept. 13, 1933, in Fort Worth, Texas. He married Grace Halle Engler at Allison, Colo.

Mr. Holcomb joined the navy and served aboard the USS L.S.T. 887, which served in Japan and Korea. He graduated from San Diego College and San Diego State University in 1959. Mr. Holcomb enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing horseshoes in Colorado.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, of Palm Desert, Calif.; a son, Glenn; two granddaughters; and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Dale Purdy

Family services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel in Odessa, Texas, for Dale Purdy, who died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Odessa Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas. He was 56.

The cause of death was not available.

Mr. Purdy was born March 6, 1943, in Lubbock, Texas. He married Arnella Yoder Vest on Jan. 28, 1996, in Durango.

Mr. Purdy moved to Odessa in 1999 from Durango. He owned and operated Midwest Machine for 20 years and then worked for Durango Air Service for more than 11 years building aircraft engines.

Mr. Purdy was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Shortwing Piper Club.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Lori Purdy Fowler of Bayfield and Rachel Vest of Odessa, Texas; four brothers, Allan Purdy of El Paso, Texas, Joe Purdy of Tulsa, Okla., Raymond Purdy of Odessa, Texas, and Bob Purdy of Dallas, Texas; four sisters, Pat Kesey of Pecos, Texas, Shirley Nowell of Granbury, Texas, Betty Lou Griffin of Midland, Texas, and Lorraine Simpson of Grand Prairie, Texas; one granddaughter, Samantha Fowler of Bayfield, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Craig Martindale will officiate at services.

Memorial services will be in Durango at a time as yet undetermined.

Emmet Lacy Roberds

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Vista Memory Gardens Cemetery in Truth or Consequences, N.M., for Emmet Lacy Roberds, who died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Durango. He was 93.

The cause of death was not available.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Roberds was born April 30, 1906, in Trinidad, Colo. He married Ernestine Davenport Sept. 15, 1927. They were married for 66 years.

Mr. Roberds spent most of his life in Colorado and New Mexico where he raised and trained quarter horses.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine.

Survivors include his son, Thomas Roberds of Aztec, N.M.; his daughter, Roxie Comyford of Bayfield; four grandchildren, Larry Roberds and Terry Roberds, both of Aztec, N.M., Carl W. Comyford of Springtown, Texas, and June Ashment of Las Vegas, Nev.; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; some nephews and a niece.
