Winifred Lucas Heard
Jan. 4, 1911 - Aug. 15, 1999

Winifred Lucas Heard of Boulder died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Boulder Manor Health Care Center. She was 88.

She was born Jan. 4, 1911, in Malvern, Ark., to Ida Hess Lucas. Her parents were divorced.

Mrs. Heard was a secretary, retired from the Texas Veterans Affairs Department in Lubbock. She was divorced.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian churches in Malvern and Newport, Ark.

She trained as a classical pianist and often performed as a guest pianist or organist in churches in Newport, Morrilton, Ark., and Des Arc, Ark. She played background music in silent movie theaters as a teenager. Later, she was a pianist in a Malvern jazz band.

She moved to the Boulder area in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Heard of Boulder and Bill Heard of San Pedro, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Chautauqua Community House, 900 Baseline Road, Boulder.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, 4645 Broadway, Boulder 80304 or to Boulder County AIDS Project, 2118 14th St., Boulder 80302.

Howe Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Vickie Jensen
March 14, 1943 - Aug. 16, 1999

Vickie Jensen died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at her Boulder home. She was 56.

She was born March 14, 1943, in Salt Lake City, to Merlin Coe and Marjorie Petrelli Coe. She married Bliss Jensen on June 13, 1963, in Salt Lake City.

Mrs. Jensen was a homemaker.

She moved to Boulder in 1972 from Morristown, N.J.

Survivors include her husband of Boulder; two daughters, Jennifer Millican and Jacalyn Jensen, both of Littleton; a brother, Bob Coe of Salt Lake City; and a granddaughter.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Crist Mortuary, 34th Street and the Diagonal Highway in Boulder.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to International Myeloma Foundation, 2129 Stanly Hills Drive, Los Angeles, Calif. 90046.

Lena Rivers Parker
i>Aug. 24, 1913 - Aug. 15, 1999

Lena Rivers Parker of Boulder died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Frazier Meadows Care Center in Boulder. She was 85.

She was born Aug. 24, 1913, in Ellaville, Ga., to Ernest Fowler and Thulia Layfield Fowler. She married Rufus Parker on Dec. 21, 1936. He died in 1974.

Mrs. Parker moved from Columbus, Ga., to Colorado in 1995. She graduated from Montezuma High School in Montezuma, Ga.

She worked as a sales clerk for Sears for 21 years before retiring in 1975.

Mrs. Parker was a member of the Oates Avenue Baptist Church in Columbus for more than 50 years, teaching Sunday school, working with the food bank and serving as the treasurer for a number of years. She was a member of the Sears Retiree Association.

Survivors include three daughters, Joy Weldon of Cheyenne, Wyo., Judith Sorg of Broomfield and Diane Freitag of Parkland, Wash.; a brother, George Fowler of Montezuma; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eian Fowler and Ernest Fowler; and a sister, Jenny Price.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Howe Mortuary in Longmont.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today in the Phillips Chapel of Frazier Meadows Manor, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder, with the Rev. William Youngblood officiating.

Interment will be in Park Hill Cemetery, Columbus.

Contributions may be made to Frazier Meadows Health Care Center, Alzheimer's Unit, in care of Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont 80501.

RICHARDS

Clifton W. Richards of Westminster died Aug. 3. He was 82.

Richards was born May 3, 1917 to Edwin Burke Richards and Esther Clifton Richards of Stanley, N.M. He married Ollie J. Lee in Kingman, Ariz. on June 7, 1939.

He worked in sales, banking and as a meat cutter.

He is survived by his wife of Westminster; a son, Cliff Richards of Broomfield; a daughter, Trisha Pryde and husband Steve of Broomfield; two granddaughters, Cindy Spitz and husband Chris of Ft. Collins and Nadine Richards of Western Australia; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Ryan Spitz of Ft. Collins; and a step-great-grandson C.J. Spitz.

Services were held in Albuquerque, N.M. on Aug. 7. Contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 1280 S. Parker Road, Denver, 80231.

SCHMIDT

Helen Corey Schmidt of Westminster died Aug. 12. She was 88.

Schmidt was born Dec. 7, 1910 in Trinidad, Colo. to Clement B. and Charlotte Corey. She graduated from high school in Seattle and was a long-time resident of Menlo Park, Calif. She lived in Westminster for three years.

She worked for 24 years as a technical secretary at Stanford Research International in Menlo Park. She was a member of the Unity Church and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

She was preceded in death by her son Corey Schmidt in February 1999.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen (Michael) Brasselero of the Broomfield area; a grandson, Joshua Lewis of Helena, Mont.; a brother, Richard Corey of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; and two step-grandchildren, Lisa Vincent of Arvada and Mickey Brasselero of Golden.

Services are 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Rundus Funeral Home in Broomfield. Inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Seattle.

James E. Conlin
March 24, 1936 - Aug. 16, 1999

James E. Conlin of Gold Hill died of a heart attack Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, in Sweetwater, Colo. He was 63.

He was born March 24, 1936, in Detroit to Earl Conlin and Annette Fansler Conlin. He married Sharon Moreland on April 3, 1959, in Farmington, Mich.

Mr. Conlin first came to Boulder in 1955. In 1959, after he had completed degrees at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University Business School, he moved back to Boulder. He served in the Army from 1961 to 1963.

He worked for the University of Colorado Housing Office and also managed the CU summer conference series. He left CU in 1973, traveled around the world and lived in New Zealand. Upon his return to Boulder in 1977, he renovated houses and opened the Lickskillet Cafe in Gold Hill. He closed the cafe and made it into a private residence.

He was an avid car fan, mountain bike rider and world traveler. He founded and organized the annual Gold Hill Tour de Rump bike and treasure hunt race.

Survivors include his wife of Gold Hill; two sons, Dr. Steve Conlin of Sweetwater and David Conlin of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Mackenzie Conlin of Newport, R.I.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Horsfal, one-half mile up Sunshine Canyon Road east of Gold Hill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boulder County Open Space, Box 471, Boulder 80306.

Farnum-Holt Funeral Home of Glenwood Springs handled the arrangements.

Leo W. Cabell
March 27, 1925 - Aug. 8, 1999

Leo W. Cabell of Boulder died in an accident Aug. 8, 1999, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was 74.

He was born March 27, 1925, in Hampton, Va., to Leo Cabell Sr. and Edith Eken Cabell.

He served on the faculty of the University Libraries at the University of Colorado from September 1966 to September 1990, retiring as associate director of libraries and assistant professor emeritus. He also served on the library staff at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., before coming to Boulder in 1966.

Mr. Cabell graduated from Princeton University in 1947, returning to Rutgers University to earn a master's degree in library science in 1963. During World War II, he was a paratrooper with the 17th Airborne Division, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and lost a leg.

He enjoyed skiing, hiking and scuba diving. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include a cousin, Edith Doran of Medford, N.J.

No services are planned. Cremation has occurred.

James Matzen
Nov. 28, 1911 - Aug. 18, 1999

James Matzen of Louisville died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, in Louisville. He was 87.

He was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Naples, Italy, to Luigi Matzen and Maria Rosa Vaia Matzen. He married Cele Madoff in September 1966 in New York City.

Mr. Matzen was a security guard at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. He was also a barber in New York City.

He moved to Boulder County on July 23, 1999.

He was a shipbuilder and in the Army Reserves during WWII. He was a violinist.

Survivors include his wife of Louisville; and two sons, Edward Matzen of Dallas and John Matzen of New York City.

Private services were held.

Avalon Funeral Home of Boulder handled arrangements.

Darlene J. Fleming
March 25, 1931 - Aug. 22, 1999

Darlene J. Fleming of Lafayette died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in Lafayette. She was 68.

She was born March 25, 1931, in Marinette, Wis., to Edna Baker Pecha and Arthur Pecha. She married Stanley Fleming in October 1949 in Marinette.

She was a homemaker.

In August 1990, Mrs. Fleming moved from Wisconsin to Arvada, moving later during the same year to Boulder.

She enjoyed reading and shopping.

Survivors include her husband of Lafayette; her mother of Wisconsin; two daughters, Michele Spiker of Louisville and Denise Matile of Lafayette; two sons, Stephen Fleming of Rochester, Minn., and David Fleming of Louisville; two brothers, Robert Pecha of Colfax, Wis., and Richard Pecha of Santa Monica, Calif.; a sister, Clarice Dura of Marinette; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Darrell Howe Chapel, 10203 South Boulder Road, Lafayette.

Logan John Campana
Dec. 8, 1975 - Aug. 13, 1999

Logan John Campana of Butte, Mont., and formerly of Lafayette died Friday Aug. 13, 1999, in Butte. He was 23.

He was born Dec. 8, 1975, in Butte, to Harry Campana and Kate Stone Campana.

Mr. Campana had worked at Fresh Produce in Boulder.

He lived in Lafayette from 1996 to April 1999.

He graduated from Butte High School in 1994.

He competed on the Mission Viejo Nadadores Swim Team in California from 1989 to 1990. In 1992, he coached children's swimming in Japan. He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his parents of Lafayette; a sister, Saskya Campana of Lafayette; and his grandparents, Bernard and Vera Stone of Broomfield.

A Sukhavati ceremony will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Karma Dzong, 1345 Spruce St., Boulder.

Cremation has taken place and his ashes were interred in southwest Montana.

Contributions may be made to the Boulder County Mental Health Foundation, 1333 Iris Ave., Boulder, Colo., 80304.

The Duggan Dolin Mortuary in Butte was in charge of arrangements.
