John E. Ogren
June 8, 1914 - July 24, 2000

John E. Ogren of Boulder died Monday, July 24, 2000. He was 86.

The son of John E. Ogren and Emma Peterson Ogren, he was born June 8, 1914, in Niwot. He married Marie V. Neundorf on Oct. 18, 1943, in Wallace, Idaho.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was furloughed from the Army to work in the mining industry in Wallace. He worked as a machinist at the University of Colorado for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

Mr. Ogren enjoyed the mountains, hiking, hunting and fishing. He was the oldest confirmed member of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of Boulder; a daughter, June A. Cromwell of Boulder; son Phillip J. Ogren of Westminster; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Ogren, and a sister, Ella Conda.

Mr. Ogren will lie in state from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Howe Mortuary, 2121 11th St., Boulder.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Green Mountain Cemetery. The Rev. Vera Gubert-Steward will officiate.

Luverne Henry Sindt
May 15, 1915 - July 10, 2000

Luverne Henry Sindt of Boulder died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services in Boulder. He was 85.

Born May 15, 1915, in Holstein, Iowa, he was the son of Henry Charles Sindt and Bertha Bremer Sindt. He married Marie G. Nichols on Nov. 1, 1938, in Boulder. She died in 1995.

Mr. Sindt studied accounting through correspondence school.

He moved to Boulder in 1937 from Iowa.

He was a retired senior trust officer at First National Bank, now Wells Fargo, in Boulder, retiring in 1980. He formerly worked for the Alba and Warner Dairies of Boulder County. He also was the former produce manager for the Safeway store in Boulder. After his retirement he did part-time accounting at Thornton's Shoes of Boulder.

He was a longtime volunteer with the Boulder County Republican Party and was a former member of the boards of directors of the First United Methodist Church of Boulder, Frasier Meadows Manor and Unity of Boulder.

He enjoyed genealogy and coin collecting.

Survivors include a sister, a sister Mildred Cosby, of Downey, Calif.; three daughters, Judy Knudson Norton of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kathleen Blackwelder of Lander, Wyo., and Nancy Sindt-Kneisley of Lakewood; a son, Richard Sindt of Vietnam; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kerry Knudson Holden.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 in the parlor at the First Methodist Church of Boulder, 1401 Spruce St. The Revs. Cathy Norman and Ralph Henard will officiate.

Adele Horrell
July 22, 1903 - June 23, 2000

Adele Horrell of Greendale, Wis., and formerly of Boulder, died Friday, June 23, 2000. She was 96.

She was born July 22, 1903, in Hartford, Wis. to Gustav Horrell and Augusta Zilch Horrell. She married George Horrell in 1931, Milwaukee Wis. He died in 1970.

She lived in Boulder from 1954 to 1995. She was a registered nurse and worked at Boulder Community Hospital.

In 1995, she moved to Westchester, Ohio, and later moved to Greendale, Wis.

Survivors include three sons, George Horrell of Greendale; Robert Horrell of Pendleton, Calif; David Horrell of Las Alamos, N.M.; one daughter, Kathleen Culver of Terra Haute, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy, and a grandson, Eric.

Memorial services will be held in Milwaukee.

Kenneth E. Kieffer
Feb. 9, 1933 - June 22, 2000

Kenneth E. Kieffer of Firestone, and formerly of Boulder and Longmont, died Thursday, June 22, 2000. He was 67.

The son of Otto R. Kieffer and Blanche Wattowa Keiffer, he was born Feb. 9, 1933, in Granite Falls, Minn. He married Gail Erie in Granite Falls on Nov. 11, 1955.

He moved to Boulder from California in 1963 and later moved to Longmont, where he worked as a computer operator for the Federal Aviation Administration until he retired in 1990. In 1989 he moved to Firestone, where he served on the planning commission.

He was an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Paul Kieffer of Firestone and Kevin Keiffer of Longmont; three daughters, Patty Woolman of Longmont, Linda Kieffer-Peterson of Kent, Wash., and Terry Kieffer-Coulimore of Berthoud; two sisters, Shirley Ruud of Farmington, Minn., and Fran Lofquist of Spring Valley, Nev.; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a sister, Mary Ann Kieffer.

A memorial service with the Rev. Bill Lee of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church will be at 11 a.m. today at Howe Mortuary Chapel, 439 Coffman St., Longmont.

John A. Mattson
Jan. 8, 1918 - Jan. 23, 2000

John A. Mattson of Pinewood Springs died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. He was 82.

The son of Alvin E. Mattson and Florence Kezar Mattson, he was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Warren, Minn. He married Lois Nelson on Sept. 6, 1941, in Thief River Falls, Minn.

Mr. Mattson worked with his family in the newspaper and printing business in Warren and Thief River Falls, Minn, prior to serving in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He later worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. in Burbank, Calif., for 25 years, retiring in June 1974. He moved to Pinewood Springs in 1979.

He was a member of the Thief River Falls Jaycees, the Optimist Club of Estes Park, the Estes Park Rock Club and the Pinewood Springs Community Church.

Mr. Mattson enjoyed camping and hiking.

Survivors include his wife of Pinewood Springs; two daughters, Linda Rhimes of Seattle, Wash., and Mary Cronkhite of Quartz Hill, Calif.; and six grandchildren

He was preceded in death by a brother, E. Donovan Mattson.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. at Pinewood Springs Community Church, just west of Lyons off U.S. 36. The Rev. Mary Ann Banning of the church will officiate.

Ruth Marie Perea
May 12, 1915 - June 22, 2000

Ruth Marie Perea of Superior died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Boulder Community Hospital. She was 85.

Born May 12, 1915, in Miera, N.M. She was the daughter of Antonio Gurule and Adela Quintana Gurule. She married Flavio Perea on Dec. 14, 1934, in Clayton, N.M. He died in 1993.

Mrs. Perea was a resident of Superior and Newark, Calif.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Perea was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Boulder and St. Edwards Catholic Church in Newark. She enjoyed painting and sewing.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel Perea of Fremont, Calif., and Larry Perea of Newark; two daughters, Mae Espinosa of El Sobrante, Calif., and Marie Perea Young of Superior; two brothers, Joe Gurule of Reseda, Calif., and Bob Gurule of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Jennie Tafoya of Albuquerque, Nellie Meserve of Maxwell, N.M., and Vickie MacSherry of Olympia, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in California.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. July 9 at the family residence 2267 Bristol St., Superior.

Ivan John Alten
June 12, 1916 - July 27, 2000

Ivan John Alten of San Miguel De Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at Boulder Community Hospital. He was 84.

He was born July 12, 1916, in Budapest, Hungary, to Frederick Alten and Irma Schein Alten. He married Theodosia Coplas in 1957.

Mr. Alten immigrated to the United States in 1940, settling in Virginia. He joined the Army in 1944, and served in the Corps of Engineers and intelligence division in Europe during the end of World War II. He rose to the rank of captain. He received an honorable discharge and served in the reserves.

He earned an undergraduate degree in architecture and a graduate degree in city planning from the Royal Polytechnic in Budapest.

Mr. Alten worked as an architect and planner in Michigan and Virginia, was a United Nations advisor on post earthquake renewal for the government of Chile, a planner for a UN project in Singapore, designer of Fermi National Laboratories in Batavia, Ill., and was director of urban development for Kane County, Ill.

He retired in San Miguel in 1990. He enjoyed watercolors and was a master weaver. He recently moved to Boulder.

Survivors include his wife of San Miguel; three sons, Peter Alten of Manassas, Va., David Alten of Chatham, Mass., and Alexander Alten of Pleasanton, Calif.; three daughters, Helen Alten of St. Paul, Minn., Barbara Alten of Seattle, and Victoria Alten of Boulder; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Private services were held in Boulder.

Rundus Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Donald E. Billings
September 18, 1914 - July 31, 2000

Donald E. Billings, who taught at the University of Colorado during the 1960s, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Sylvania, Ga. He was 85.

He was born Sept. 18, 1914, to Edwin Billings and Myrtle May Williams Billings in Durango, Colo. He married Claire Zeagler of Georgia.

He graduated from CU and earned a doctorate from the university. For a brief period of time in the 1960s, he was chairman of the CU Department of Astro-Geo Physics and taught the course for many years.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Emily Billings of Durango; two nieces and six nephews. His wife preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at the Zeagler Family Cemetery near Sylvania. The Rev. Don Scarborough will officiate.

Arthur Henry Ditzen
May 16, 1913 - July 30, 2000

Arthur Henry Ditzen of Boulder died Sunday, July 30, 2000. He was 87.

Born May 16, 1913, in Willow City, N.D., he was the son of William Ditzen and Clara Hildebrandt Ditzen. He married Margaret Taylor in 1954 in Boulder.

Mr. Ditzen moved to Boulder in 1952 from Nebraska. He worked for Bauldi Moschette.

He was an avid small game hunter and a member of the Muffin Club and Mount Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of Mesa, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Sheri Weaver of Clifton, Colo.; a stepson, Richard Taylor of Eugene, Ore.; three sisters, Amalia Williams and Martha Ditzen, both of Boulder, and Lenore Haynes of Omaha, Neb.; and a brother, Robert Ditzen of Ralston, Neb.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 1680 Balsam Ave., Boulder, 80304. The Rev. Neal F. MacLachlan will officiate. Interment will be held at Green Mountain Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Mount Zion Lutheran Church, or the Hospice of Boulder County, 2825 Marine St., Boulder, CO 80303.

Howe Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
