Stephen F. 'Steve' Strauss

Feb. 5, 1952 - Oct. 29, 2001

Stephen F. "Steve" Strauss of Brighton, formerly of Longmont and Louisville, died of a heart attack Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton.

He was 49.

The cause of death was a heart attack.

He was born Feb. 5, 1952, in Lincoln, Neb., to Albert J. Strauss and Eldora Mohrhoff Strauss.

He married Rae A. Hutsell on Aug. 19, 1972.

He grew up in the Lincoln area, attending schools there.

Mr. Strauss moved to Longmont in 1976, where he was involved in the family business, Trend Homes by Strauss Brothers.

In 1978, the business and the family moved to Westminster.

In 1982, the family moved to Louisville and in May moved to Brighton.

For the past seven years, Mr. Strauss built homes in the metro area with his own business, Strauss Homes.

His family said he enjoyed sailing and was a car enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife of Brighton; a daughter, Erin Strauss of Niwot; a brother, Paul Strauss of Westminster; and sisters Kay Busha of Ohio and Sharon Casey of Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of his life for family and friends will be at 4 p.m. today at the family home in Brighton.

Cremation occurred at Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette.

Joseph T. 'Joe' Van Slyke
Dec. 6, 1953 - Oct. 30, 2001

Joseph T. "Joe" Van Slyke of Lafayette died at home Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, of lung cancer.

He was 47.

The son of Louis E. Van Slyke and Thelma A. Mann Van Slyke, he was born Dec. 6, 1953, in Bartlesville, Okla.

He married Jody Wucher on Aug. 3, 1997, in Austin, Texas.

He moved from Austin to Lafayette in April.

Mr. Van Slyke graduated from Stark High School in Orange, Texas, in 1972.

He was a network administrator for URS - Radian Company of Boulder.

He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Austin.

He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Survivors include his wife of Lafayette; his parents of Woodville, Texas; two brothers, Henry Allen Van Slyke of Orange, Texas and John Jones of Enid, Okla.; three sisters, Debbie Eddy of Copan, Okla., Nora Gratzl of Bella Vista, Ark., and Bonnie Tullock of Kirkland, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Emment Leroy Hauser of Bartlesville, Okla., in 1974.

Services will be held in Texas.

Betty Mae Wilson
May 8, 1931 - Oct. 28, 2001

Betty Mae Wilson of Boulder died of cancer Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services in Boulder.

She was 70.

She was born May 8, 1931, in Chicago to John J. Jorgensen and Ethel Jensen Jorgensen.

She married George J. Wilson on Dec. 28, 1952, in Chicago.

They divorced in 1979.

She graduated from the University of Illinois and earned a master's degree in contemplative psychology and psychotherapy from the Naropa Institute, now Naropa University.

She retired from private practice as a counselor and psychotherapist.

She moved to Boulder in 1985 from Englewood.

She belonged to Unity Church of Boulder.

She enjoyed reading, hiking, biking and attending concerts at Chautauqua.

"Our courageous, loving mother, whose tremendous will to live, inspired all who knew her," her family said.

"We are with her as her journey continues."

Survivors include her daughter, Jane Heckler of Arlington, Va.; sons Dave G. Wilson of Santa Fe, N.M., and Dan Wilson of Franktown; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at Unity Church of Boulder, 2855 Folsom St., with the Rev. Jack Groverland officiating.

Enid G. Houlding

May 20, 1916 - Dec. 4, 2000

Enid G. Houlding of Boulder died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Manor Care.

She was 84.

The daughter of Alexander Nisbet and Gertrude E. Gale Nisbet, she was born May 20, 1916, in Plymouth, Devonshire, England.

She married Norman Houlding on May 24, 1941, in England.

He died Dec. 14, 1988.

She attended secretarial school in Wales.

Mrs. Houlding worked at the Winchester Public Library in Winchester, Mass.

She moved to Boulder in June.

She enjoyed singing, playing bridge and reading.

She helped form a Gilbert and Sullivan Society, in which she performed in the '60s and '70s.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith A. Houlding of Boulder; three sons, Richard N. Houlding of Wayland, Mass., Andrew L. Houlding of Hamden, Conn., and J. Alexander Houlding of Minneapolis, Minn.; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.

Nanette Leigh Liden

Nov. 15, 1968 - Dec. 5, 2000

Nanette Leigh Liden of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Boulder, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, in Kansas City.

She was 32.

Born Nov. 15, 1968, in Laramie, Wyo., she was the daughter of John Liden and Patricia Rogness Liden.

Ms. Liden graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor's degree in criminology.

She worked in Kansas City as a public relations director, an event organizer and restaurant manager.

Survivors include her mother and her step-father, Ray Cutlip, of Honolulu, Hawaii; her father and step-mother, Judith Liden, of Elizabeth; a sister, Lisa C. Allen, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a half-brother, Dustin Liden of Elizabeth; two half-sisters, Julia Liden and Cassandra Liden, both of Elizabeth; two step-brothers, Michael Cutlip of San Diego, Calif., and Matthew Cutlip of Naples, Fla.; two step-sisters, Jennifer Janssen and Rachael Gray, both of Parker; a grandmother, Dorothy Clark, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a great-grandmother, Ethel Gnam, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a step-grandmother, Isobel Cutlip, of Venice, Fla.; and a grandfather, Don Rogness, and step-grandmother, Anita Rogness, of Nipomo, Calif.

Services will be Saturday in Kansas City.

McGilley Midtown Chapel in Kansas City, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy J. Reed

Oct. 16, 1916 - Dec. 6, 2000

Dorothy J. Reed of Boulder died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Boulder Community Hospital.

She was 84.

The daughter of Nels P. Johnson and Julia Anderson Johnson, she was born Oct. 16, 1916, in Denver.

She graduated from North High School in Denver in 1934.

She married Carleton H. "Pat" Reed on July 15, 1945, in Boulder.

They divorced in 1961.

She lived in Tabernash and Denver before moving to Boulder in 1945.

She worked for the Western Welcome Service from 1964 to 1995 and Boulder's Dinner Theatre from 1980 to 1999.

She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, Boulder Chorale, Trinity Lutheran Choir and Bell Choir.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Carleton Reed of Louisville and Christopher Lynn Reed of Longmont, and three granddaughters.

Visitation will be at 9 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2200 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80302.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. at the church.

Burial will be at Crown Hill Memorial Park, 7777 W. 29th Ave., Denver.
