Harold Lloyd Graves, 76, of Akron died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. Mass of Christian burial will be conducted Friday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Akron with the Rev. Joseph Blanco officiating.

Timothy Alan Gertner
Dec. 29, 1971 - Dec. 7, 2005

Timothy Alan Gertner, 33, went home to his Heavenly Father Dec. 7, 2005, after an eight-year battle with thyroid cancer. Tim was born Dec. 29, 1971, in Sterling to Clarence and Dorothy (Weingardt) Gertner.

Tom Huffman

Tom Huffman, 76, formerly of Sterling, died Feb. 21, 2006, in Castle Rock. Services will be held Feb. 28 at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Castle Rock with the Rev. William Vollmer officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Lorin Gene Lowery

Lorin Gene Lowery was born on May 1, 1935, in Crook. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 17, 2006, while in Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins. Lorin graduated from Crook High School in 1953. He then worked at Foxhoven Tire Service in Sterling for five years.

Larry D. Russell

Larry D. Russell, 62, of Sterling, died Friday, June 9, 2006, in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Topeka, Kan. Mr. Russell was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Topeka to Herschel and Thelma (Walthall) Russell. He graduated from Seaman High School in Topeka and entered the U.S. Army.

Alma Naomi Swedberg

Alma Naomi Swedberg, 94, of Holyoke, died June 21, 2006, at the Holyoke Health and Rehab. Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 1, 2006, at the Jeffers-Baucke Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Dennis. A private inurnment will be at the Hill Side Cemetery in Julesburg at a later date.

Anna Korbe

In life, our Mother crocheted angels; in death, angels came to take her to a better place. Anna M. Korbe, 93, of Sterling, ceased to be on Aug. 3, 2006. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Tennant Funeral Home, with a vigil and rosary to follow at Tennant. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m.

Paul James Brotzman

Paul James Brotzman, 81, died Aug. 9, 2006, in Brush. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Tennant Funeral Home with Frank Waitley officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military rites by American Legion Post No. 20.

Gale Ransdell

1935 - 2008

Gale Ransdell, 73, of Sterling, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 12, at Faith United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joyce DeToni-Hill officiating. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery, with graveside services by BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336.
Gale was born March 19, 1935, to Mildred (Bergsten) and Vernon Sven Ransdell in Casper, Wyo. At age 1 1/2, he moved to Champion, Neb., to be raised by his grandparents, Ivil and Pearl Bergsten, following the death of his mother. He lost his father in an accident several years later.
When Gale was in fourth grade, his grandparents moved to Imperial, Neb. Gale graduated from Chase County High School in Imperial in 1953.
On Oct. 18, 1953, he married Maurine (Gardner) in Imperial. They moved to Sterling in 1958, where he started working for Stickneys. He was vice-president/general manager when the store closed in 1986. He then worked as superintendent of the Street Division for the city of Sterling, retiring in 2001.
Maurine passed away in September of 2001.
On Aug. 16, 2003, Gale married Rita Sperling Lambrecht in Estes Park. His special gift in life was a kidney transplant in April 2003.
Gale was a member of Faith United Methodist church, and a 50-year member of the Sterling Elks Lodge. He was an active member of the Lions and the Old Pickup Club. He enjoyed elk hunting, boating, fishing, pheasant hunting and spending the many, many hours with his family in these activities. He and Rita enjoyed traveling. He will be remembered for his sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell.
Gale is survived by his wife, Rita; son, Marlon and wife Gwen of Eaton and their children, Brandon of Loveland, Janel Tena and husband Obed of Denver, and Eric Hurst and wife Shawna of Palmer, Alaska; son, Monty and wife Terri of Sterling, their children, Marshall and Matthew, and their grandson, Brendon, all of Sterling; son, Ty and wife Ruth of Santa Fe, N.M., and their children, Dustin, Aaron and Logan; step-daughter Valerie Igler and husband Brad and their children, Austin and Lindsey, all of Akron; step-son, Ryan Lambrecht and fiancée Cheryl of Erie; half-sisters, Donna Jean Ransdell and Patsy Gust of Washington; mother-in-law, Edna Gardner of Imperial and the entire Gardner family; mother-in-law and father-in-law Leonard and Laurina Sperling of Arlington, Neb., and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine, in 2001; and his parents and grandparents.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or Hospice of the Plains.
Chaney-Reager Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Carlin 'Carl' S. Stratton Sr.

1929 - 2008

Carlin “Carl” Samuel Stratton Sr., 78, of Sterling, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, in Denver after being hospitalized for the last nine months. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Chaney-Reager, with the Rev. Jay Littlefield officiating the service. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Carl was born Oct. 28, 1929, to Oren and Jessie (Kerfoot) Stratton in Maywood, Mo. He attended schools in Missouri. At the age of 15, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of World War II.
After returning to the U.S., he was a truck driver for many years. He later settled in the Sterling area, working for the Propst Ranch. In his later years, he operated Nation Septic Tank and Drain Service until his illness.
Carl married Peggy VaNatta. They later divorced. On Dec. 15, 1995, he married Ella Mae Nation.
Carl was a member of the Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336. His hobbies were his love of horses, bowling, fishing, hunting and trucks of all kinds. Anyone who knew Carl knew he didn’t ever tell a story.
Carl is survived by his wife, Ella Mae; his children, Carlin “Bud” Stratton Jr. and wife Roberta of Flagler, Vernon Stratton of Bethune, Joseph Stratton of Ogallala, Neb., Oren Stratton and wife Karla of Sterling, Jennifer Miller and husband Dale of Rawlins, Wyo., William Stratton and wife Erika of Cedaredge, Francis Ertle of Sterling, Debra Unrein and husband Stephen of Merino, Laura Burland and husband Shawn of Polson, Mont., Melissa Martin and husband Brian of Shelbyville, Idaho, and Roxanne Hutt and husband Dave of Sterling; 24 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Jessie Stratton; his son, Jeffery Alan Stratton; and sisters, Maxine Harn, Roxanne Waisner and Louise Yarbourgh.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Carlin Stratton Sr. Memorial Fund, in care of Ella Mae Nation, P.O. Box 894, Sterling, CO 80751.

Arlene Schadegg Williams, Hanna, Wyo., and formerly of Sterling

1932 - 2008

Arlene Schadegg Williams, 75, of Hanna, Wyo. and formerly of Sterling, died May 1, 208, in Rawlins, Wyo. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with Rosary and Vigil service to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Robert L. Wedow officiating. Services will conclude at the church.
Mrs. Williams was born May 12, 1932, to Herman J. and Ida A. (Haag) Schadegg in St. Peters. She attended St. Anthony Catholic School.
She was a law enforcement officer in California, Wyoming and Colorado.
She married Don Welch at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sterling. He passed away Sept. 22, 1954.
In 1965, she married Ron Williams.
Mrs. Williams enjoyed bowling.
She is survived by her husband, Ron WIlliams of Hanna, Wyo.; sons, James Welch of Hanna and Donald Welch of Cheyenne, Wyo.; brothers, Herman Schadegg of Sterling and Clarence Schadegg of Drake; sisters, Eleanor Rigel and Alvina Lousberg, both of Sterling, and Lorraine Goss of El Cajon, Calif.; grandsons, Donnie Welch and wife Edith of Texas and Lance Welch of Hanna; granddaughter, Brinetta Beguin and husband Shawn of South Dakota; great-grandson, Evan Welch; and great-granddaughter, Annabelle Welch.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Ida Schadegg; brother, Ernest Schadegg; and sisters, Marie Schmeits, Alice Parady, Bernadine Rau and Edna Fiscus.

Cecilia 'CeCe' L. Henry Gunnels, Artesia, N.M.

1952 - 2007

Cecelia “CeCe” L. Henry Gunnels, 54, daughter of Russell and Bonnie (McGuire) Henry of Sterling, died Aug. 20, 2007, in Artesia, N.M. Memorial services will be on Wednesday, May 7, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Active in 4-H, treasurer of Tri-hi-wi pep club, Lotus Club and secretary-treasurer of the Latin Club, she graduated from Sterling High School in 1971.
CeCe had an exemplary career working with Colorado Department of Human Services in Adams, Denver and Weld counties from 1973 through the 1990s. She was a dynamic activist for her clients.
A most joyous and welcoming woman with an unparalleled zest for life, CeCe’s contagious laugh lifted spirits and split sides. A bit of a wild child, she even became a “motorcycle mama” when she bought a Harley.
CeCe married the love of her life, Gary Gunnels, on Sept. 5, 2000, in Portales, N.M., making their home in Artesia, N.M. They traveled together while conducting his dairy deliveries.
She enjoyed traveling the American Southwest with her husband, reading and selling her creative writings and crocheting. She loved to listen to Steely Dan, the Moody Blues and Bette Midler. She made stained glass and gardened with Gary.
CeCe was a strong independent woman, tender-hearted and romantic; a loyal and loving Christian friend. Her devoted husband was by her side.
She is survived by her husband, Gary; daughter, Melinda of Nebraska; brother, Harry of Texas; many nieces and nephews; and many friends whose lives were enriches by her presence.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Larry.

Aaron Lee Schad, Nebraska

1943 - 2008

Aaron Lee Schad, 64, lost his courageous battle with cancer on May 2, 2008, at his home with his family and friends by his side . His body was cremated. A “Celebration of His Life” will be held for friends and family at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Quality Inn in North Platte, Neb.
Aaron was born Aug. 7, 1943, to A.F. and Marvel (Gwin) Schad in Portland, Ore. His parents returned to Gothenburg, Neb., after the war, where he attended grade school until 1953. The family then moved to North Platte to own and operate Schad’s South Jeffers Plumbing and Heating. He graduated in 1961 from North Platte High, attended UNL, Kearney State and the Colorado School of Gunsmithing.
In 1963, he married his high school sweetheart, Janice Phillips, in North Platte. They joined his parents in the hospitality business and built many motels and restaurants in Nebraska, Missouri, Idaho and Colorado. At one point in his career, he owned and operated six Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, North Platte Dairy Queen, two Char-Bars, five motels and a Wholesale Shooting Supply.
He was an avid shooter, marksman and an excellent sportsman. After selling some of his businesses, he loved spending the summers fishing in Alaska and his winters hunting in Nebraska.
Aaron was a member of the Hastings Elks No. 159, Amateur Trapshooting Association, National Skeet Shooting Association, NRA, and was a 43-year member of the U.S. Association of Hospitality. He was inducted into the Nebraska Skeet Shooters Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also honored to be an “Admiral in the Nebraska Navy.”
Aaron did not belong to an affiliated church. However, he was a Christian and believed God was always with him.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; one son, Michael P. Schad of Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Lisa Foy and husband John of Omaha, Neb., and Elizabeth “Ellie” Schad of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren, Alexandra “Alex” Gillispie, Elizabeth “Betsy” Foy and Daniel Foy, all of Omaha, and Nolan Schad of Lincoln; a brother, Murray Schad and wife Maris; and a sister-in-law, Marlynn (Gary) Beery of Greeley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, AF and Marvel Schad; his in-laws, W. Stanley and Mary (Kilmer) Phillips; a brother-in-law, Harold “Phil” Phillips; and several aunts and uncles.
Memorials have been established to the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation for the High School Trap Shooting Team and Hospice. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Those wishing to sign the memorial book may do so from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
