Iona Mae Owens, Julesburg, CO

1928 - 2008

Iona Mae “Onie” Owens, 79, of Julesburg, CO died July 6, 2008 in Julesburg, CO. A memorial service will be held July 9, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Church of Crook, with inurnment in the Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley, CO.
Iona was born November 28, 1928 in Sterling, CO to William O. Hodges and Delia Della Davis. She attended Sterling Schools. She worked as a housewife and also assisted her husband in club management.
She married Charles V. Owens August 3, 1969 in Sterling, CO and the two were married for 39 years until her death. She also was married to JB Griffith from 1945 to 1968. She loved spending time with her grand kids.
Iona is survived by her husband Charles “Chuck”, son Bill & wife Lorrie Griffith of Summerville, SC, step daughter Linda & husband Phil Mollendor of Julesburg, CO, step daughter Donna & husband Ken Bellamy of Arvada, CO, sister Dorothy Griffith of Oklahoma, ten grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Iona was preceded in death by her father William O. Hodges, mother Delia Della Hodges, sister Martha Osborn, brothers William Hodges, George Hodges, and Robert Hodges, step-son Chuckie Owens, and step daughter Susan Lechman.
Memorials can be made to the Iona Owens memorial fund C/O Linda Mollendor 106 E 8th St Julesburg, CO 80737 which will be donated for cancer research.
Austin-Tennant Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Joel Lee (Harshman) Embree, Loveland, Colorado

1982 - 2008

Joel Lee (Harshman) Embree, son of Lynn Harshman and Jeanette (Garska) Emery died June 14, 2008 at Loveland, CO of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Joel was born Jan 28,1982 in Greeley, CO and lived there for 5 years After his parents divorced in 1987 he moved to Eaton, CO with his mother and in 1989 was adopted by his step-father John Embree. He received his education in Eaton and then moved to Berthoud, CO.
Joel worked in the Loveland, Aurora, and Denver areas. Joel loved music for which he had a particular gift of perfect pitch. He composed and produced his own music and played in several bands. Joel had a quick wit and was extremely intelligent. He was especially good with technology and had at one point attended Computer Technology School.
On January 15, 2005 Joel married April DeBellis at the LDS Church in Loveland, CO. To this union Caden Benjamin was born June 4, 2006. Caden was Joel’s pride and joy.
Joel was proceeded in death by an infant sister Amanda Marie Harshman in 1981 and his grandfather, Virgil E. Harshman.
Joel is survived by his wife, April and son, Caden Embree and another son, Daylan born 2002; his father Lynn Harshman and wife, Barb of Aurora, CO; mother, Jannette Emery and step-father Bernell Emery; adoptive father, John Embree; brothers, Jesse (Harshman) Embree and Jonnie Embree of Loveland, CO, Joshua Harshman and step-brother Jacob Struble of Aurora, CO; Niece, Jade Alana Embree: In-laws, Benjamin and Jerri DeBellis of Yuma, CO; Grandmother, Elsie Loreen Harshman of Wray, CO and grandparents, Howard and Jane Garska of Ogallala, NE; Uncle, Jack Harshman and wife, Sherry of Denver, CO., Aunt, Vickie Love and husband, Lurie of Wray,CO, Aunt, Sheila Hageman and husband, Marty of Fremont, NE; cousins, Roger Harshman and wife, Lisa, Ann (Harshman) Messiner, Sarah Love, Darcy (Love) Beauchamp and husband, Daniel, Curston and Sean Hageman, Michael, John, Dillon, Kaylie and Kyle Harshman, Mindy and Toby Messiner, Isabella Messiner, Elizabeth Moeller and many other friends and family.
Visitation was Tue. June 17, 2008 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with services at 2:00 pm Wed. June 18 at Allnutt Funeral Service Loveland, CO. Another service followed on Thurs. June 19,2008 in Ogallala at Draucker’s Funeral Chapel with internment at Ogallala Cemetery.

Gary L. Kayton, Chandler, Arizona

1947 - 2008

Gary L. Kayton passed away on June 25, 2008 in Chandler, Arizona. Gary was born in Sidney, Nebraska on February 21, 1947.
He was the oldest child of Ivan and Pearl Kayton. Gary grew up on a farm in Chappell, Nebraska along with his brother and two sisters. He attended school in Chappell and graduated from high school in 1965. He married Linda Smith of Sedgwick in January, 1965.
Gary completed his training in Diesel Mechanics at North East Technical College in 1967. Soon afterwards, he and his family moved to the oil fields of Hobbs, New Mexico where they lived for 32 years. During this time Gary worked as a diesel mechanic and in the dirt construction field.
They raised two sons, Greg and Larry. Gary was an avid motor sports fan and enjoyed dirt track racing with his two sons. In 1999 Gary and Linda moved to Arizona. In Arizona he worked for Vermeer as a service technician. He continued to enjoyed dirt track racing with his two sons. He continued to enjoy stock car racing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Gary was a straightforward and boisterous man who enjoyed people. He was loved by many people and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his father, Ivan Kayton, and sister , Joann Glinn.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Greg and Larry; grandsons, Austin, Colton, Dustin, and John; his mother, Pearl Kayton; his sister, Pat Carlson; his brother, Kent Kayton; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was June 29, 2008 at Lakeview Mortuary, Mesa, Arizona. the funeral was June 30 at Desert Cross Lutheran Church in Temple, Arizona.

Don Peterson

1943 - 2008

Don Peterson, 65, of Litchfield Park, Ari., and formerly of Crook, died June 23, 2008, at his home in Litchfield. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Julesburg Cemetery.
He was born May 1, 1943, to Buck and Thelma Peterson in Julesburg.
Mr. Peterson is survived by his mother; two sons, Clint of Chino Valley, Ari., and Robin of Rio Osa, Calif.; brother, Richard of Crook; five grandchildren; and many cousins and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Margrette Ann (Ludington) Andersen, Fletcher, Oklahoma

1923 - 2008

Margrette Ann (Ludington) Andersen, 84, died at her residence in Fletcher, Oklahoma on January 3, 2008. margrette was a long time resident of Sedgwick County, Colorado. Margrette was the seventh child of Teresa and Francis Edward Ludington. she was born December 1, 1923 in Saint Paul, Nebraska.
She received her education at Saint Paul, and graduated from the Saint Paul High School in 1943. At which time she moved to Julesburg, Colorado to live with her eldest sister Anna and her husband Vic Peterson. she was employed in their variety store when she met a handsome young soldier newly discharged from the U.S. Army. she married Robert Lyle Andersen on may 30, 1947. to this union was born Judy Marlene on March 31, 1948 and Roxanne on december 16, 1956. Margarette was an avid gardner and took extreme pride in her yard. the other lights in her life included her four grandchildren and her four great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her sister Anna and her husband Vic, Sister Isabel and husband Dan, Sister Edith and husband Frank, Brother Bert and wife Anne and her beloved husband of 58 years, Bob.
Survivors include daughter Judy and husband Jerry Blixt, daughter Roxanne and husband Tom Fred Jacobson, Granddaughters Jennifer Ditmer, Jessica Blixt, Roxie Lee Jacobson, and Grandson Robert Thomas Jacobson, Great granddaughters Kimberly Ditmer, Rebeccca and Cindy Jacobson and one great grandson Tyler Jacobson. Brother Francis Luddington, wife Gwen, Sister Ida Mae Prince, husband Hank, sister-in-law Neva Wilson and many nieces and nephews.
Following their wishes, Bob and Margrette were united on May 30, 2008 during a beautiful sunset, on what would have been their 61st Wedding Anniversary. Attending were daughters Judy Blixt, husband Jerry, Roxanne Jacobson, husband Tom, granddaughters jennifer Ditmer, Jessica Blixt, Roxie Jacobson and great granddaughter Kimberly Ditmer.

Lois I. Condy, Julesburg

1920 - 2008

Lois I. Condy, 88, of Julesburg, CO went to be with the lord on June 21, 2008. Funeral services were held Tuesday June 24, 2008 at the Mennonite Church in Julesburg,CO with Pastor Art Roth officiating. Lois was born to proud parents Vernan & Fern McKellips on April 13, 1920, in Julesburg, CO. October 23, 1938 was the union in marriage of Ralph E. Condy to Lois I. McKellips, they resided in Big Springs, NE.

Survivors Include three children, Janice (Monte) Mercer of Julesburg, CO, Norvin (Shirley) Condy of Minier, IL, Gaylene Weber of North Platte, NE, Eight grandchildren, Barry (Yvonne) Mercer, Missy (Dan) Wingard, Brady (Katie) Mercer, all of Arvada, CO, Michelle (Mike) Case of Midway, KY, Melinda (John) Heinlen, of Heyworth, IL, Brock Weber of Joplin, MO, Brandon (Danielle) Weber of Lincoln, NE, and Brett Weber of Joplin, MO. Ralph & Lois were also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren.

Ralph & Lois moved from Big Springs to Sedgwick ,CO and then Julesburg became their home of over 60 years. Lois was known for her winning smile, and love & kindness shown to all people. Lois was a faithful servant for the lord as her walk with God was evident to all. Her joy in life was her family & friends and she gave of herself and touched so many lives. Lois had a gift for teaching teenagers for 30 plus years & her home was always open to everyone, where she showed hospitality with great cooking. She also enjoyed volunteering at the welcome center & nursing home. Lois & Ralph were married for 66 years before Ralph departed this life. Lois worked at the House of Fashion & Hartungs as a clothing clerk. She wrote the social news for The Grit Advocate, worked at the Condy Grocery Store, and worked for 35 years as a secretary at the Julesburg Irrigation District where she retired at the age of 80.

Preceding her in death was her father, Vernan McKellips, her mother Fern McKellips, & her husband Ralph Condy. She was a loving daughter, wife, mom, grandma & friend and she will be missed by all.

Memorials can be made to the Mennonite Church P.O. Box 52 Julesburg, CO 80737. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Donna M Bauer, Julesburg

1950 - 2008

Donna M. Bauer, born June 29, 1950 in Billings, Montana, passed away on June 22, 2008. Donna was preceded in death by her father, Harley Stansberry a brother, Michael Stansberry and a son, Kenneth Bauer, Jr.
Donna lived in Julesburg for 13 years. She worked at the Big Springs Truck and Travel (Total) for 12 years. She had also worked at Safeway in Loveland, Colo., for five years prior to coming to Julesburg. She also lived in Wyoming, Commerce City, Loveland, Rifle and Silt areas.
Donna loved her family, camping, fishing, bowling and enjoyed going to Black Hawk occasionally.
Donna had three children, Kathy Bauer Rodwell, Doug Towns, and Kenneth Bauer, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Rodwell and husband Carl of Anton, Colo., and their six children. Doug Towns of Julesburg. A brother David Stansberry and wife Kim of Loveland. A sister Linda Larmay of Julesburg and her husband Gene. Her mother Anna Carey of Julesburg, along with numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends and relatives.
Donna was married twice. First to Jerry Perlick for 11 years, and then to Kenneth Bauer, Sr. for seven years.
Donna donated her body to Science. There will be no regular funeral services, a short memorial service will be held at a later date.

John R. Sittner, Sidney, Nebraska

1945 - 2008

John R. Sittner, 63 of Sidney, NE passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 25th at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Charles Alkula officiating. Military graveside honors will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Tuesday from 1-6:00 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to the First United Methodist Church in Sidney.

Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements.

John Raymond Sittner, the son of Albert and Virginia (Pierson) Sittner, was born on February 17, 1945 in Sidney. John attended the Sidney Public Schools and graduated with the Sidney High Class of 1963. He then went on to Iowa State University graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. John began working for Bell Labs in Naperville, IL before entering the United States Army. Following his discharge John returned to Sidney.

Survivors include his mother: Virginia of Sidney; (1) sister: Cheryl Walsh of Sidney; (1) brother: Kevin Sittner and wife Janelle of Sidney; (5) nephews, (3) nieces and numerous other family.

John was preceded in death by his father: Al; grandparents: Ray and Sara Pierson and John and Elizabeth Sittner.

Cheri Mae LeBlanc

1970 - 2008

Cheri Mae LeBlanc of Rifle passed away on June 6, 2008. She was 37.
Cheri was born in Sterling Colorado on December 27, 1970 to Lois Jean (Wright) and Wilfred Collen LeBlanc Sr. She always had a good positive outlook on life and loved all the children in her life, she was a member of the First Baptist of Hayden.
She is preceded in death by her Grandma May Rose Blake, Uncles David Wright, and Randy LeBlanc, cousin James Pogline.
She is survived by her parents Lois Jean Wright, and Wilfred Leblanc and step mother Bobbijo Leblanc. Sons David Lee Bresnak of Julesburg CO, and Michael Allen Piland of Missouri. Daughter Ashlea Amanda Piland of Missouri. Brothers Wilfred Collen LeBlanc Jr. (Willie) of Meeker, CO, David James LeBlanc of Sedro-Woolley, WA. Her sister Rachelle Jean LeBlanc of Sedro-Woolley, WA. Seven nieces, and many cousins, aunts and uncles, her grandparents Calvin and Joice LeBlanc.
A memorial service will be held Friday June 13, 2008 at 10:30am, at the Faith Baptist Church, 1089 Garfield, Meeker CO, Pastor John Swope officiating.
The family asks that memorial be made to the Faith Baptist Church in Cheri’s name, PO Box 346, Meeker, CO, 81641.

Calvin Richard Watson, Julesburg

1924 - 2008

Calvin Richard Watson, 84, passed away June 3, 2008 in Julesburg, CO. Visitation was Wednesday June 4th 2008 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral Services were Thursday, June 5th 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Julesburg, CO with Pastors Kristie Firme and Art Roth officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery.

Cal was born in Sidney, NE on May 21, 1924 to James and Lillian (Dame) Watson. He attended Elementary School in Sidney and Holyoke, completing his education in Holyoke.

Cal worked at the Clover Blossom Creamery in Holyoke before joining the 158 Infantry Regiment on June 14, 1944. Departure date was December 31, 1944. On April 1, 1945 he made a landing on Luzon. He was honorably discharged on May 7, 1946. Cal was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon with Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68 Victory Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, and Bronze Arrowhead. Cal was very proud to serve his country during WWII, the same time period as his four brothers.

Cal was a Depot Agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad. On May 26, 1950 Calvin married Mildred Johnson in Holyoke. They came to the Julesburg-Ovid area to farm and work at the Great Western Sugar Company during campaign. Cal retired from Safeway in Julesburg after 17 years as Produce Manager. Cal continued to farm until 2007.

Cal and Mildred raised four children, Dan, Claudia, Carol, and Connie on the family farm. He was very proud of them for all being school teachers.

Cal was a member of the United Methodist Church of Julesburg; Order of Eastern Star Chapter 105, Past Master; Holyoke Masonic Lodge #81, Past Master; Scottish Rite of Free Masonry S.J. USA.

Calvin’s hobbies included woodworking, jig saw puzzles, watching his grandchildren participating in their various activities, and visiting with friends and family.

Cal is survived by his wife, Mildred, of 57 years, daughters Claudia (Ron) Koberstein of Holyoke, Carol (Lloyd) Gillham of Iliff, and Connie (Dave) Wilkening of Haxtun. Grandchildren Corey and Karisa Koberstein, Sara and Scott Gillham, Amanda, Morgan, and Darian Wilkening. Brother Duane (Swede) of Denver, Darrell (Bill) and wife Fran of Ft. Collins and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cal was preceded in death by son Daniel, brothers James and Forrest (Snooze) and Sister Pauline (Sue).
