Arnold Osborn Ritchey, Julesburg
1913 - 2008
Arnold Osborn Ritchey, 95, of Julesburg, CO passed away October 5, 2008 in Julesburg, CO. Memorial services will be held Thursday October 9, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Julesburg, CO at 10:30 AM with Pastor Kristie Firme Officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
Arnold was born January 28, 1913 the eighth child of Valentine and Eunice C. Barker Ritchey on the family homestead near Broughton, Illinois.
His early grade schooling was in a one room country school house reached by a gravel road two walking miles away. In 1927, the family moved to Denver, CO due to the failing health of his father. The remainder of his growing up years he resided with his parents and continued his education in the Jefferson County Colorado Schools.
In 1942 Arnold Ritchey served honorably and well in the United States Army Air Force in World War II as a military policeman earning an American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
In 1952 Arnold was united in marriage to Marvelle (Yackel) Ritchey. This ceremony took place at the Grant Avenue Methodist Church in Denver, CO.
On May 23, 1960 Arnold willingly responded to a plea from National Jewish Hospital in Denver for a special type of blood for a direct transfusion to save a little girl’s life. Arnold derived a sense of pride and satisfaction from his contribution.
Arnold was employed as an automotive technician at various dealerships in the Denver area. One dealership, in particular, was Hover Motors whose well-known slogan was “The Dealership With The Sharpest Pencil In Town.”
Arnold enjoyed big game hunting, fishing, camping, and driving his Ford Bronco over the rough terrain of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Arnold was a member of the Julesburg United Methodist Church and the American Legion.
In retirement it was agreed to locate to a smaller community and Julesburg, CO was the chosen site.
Arnold was a guest of the Sedgwick County Nursing Home where tender, loving care is administered. In recent months he often said, “God knows I’m here and he knows my every need.”
He is survived by his wife Marvelle, nephews Harvey Ritchey, Michael Ritchey, Timothy Ritchey, sister-in-law, Joann Brown, and many other family members and friends.
In honor of Arnold memorials can be made to the United Methodist Church in Julesburg. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Dolezal
1928 - 2008
Maxine E. Dolezal, age 80 of Ogallala, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.
She was born August 20, 1928 at Hays, Kansas the daughter of John A. and Rose Anne (House) Bartley. Maxine attended schools in Eastern Kansas until 1945 when she moved to Big Springs with her parents. She graduated from the Big Springs High School in 1946.
Maxine worked for nineteen years as a bookkeeper and prior to her retirement she was the director of the Ogallala Retired Senior Volunteer Program. On August 30, 1986 she married Jerry Dolezal in Julesburg, Colorado. They made their home in Ogallala and enjoyed their retirement years together. Maxine was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She and Jerry especially enjoyed entertaining their families and friends. Maxine was active in a number of volunteer activities following her retirement. She loved children and volunteered in the elementary schools for a number of years. Her hobbies included music, reading, sewing and crafts. She had become a member of the Baptist Church in 1960.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her parents; and her sister, Jacqueline Butler.
Survivors include her son, Randall Knapp of Ogallala and his children, Tara, Cameron, Karrie, Katie. Daughter, Karma (Joe) Gallegos of Henderson, CO and their daughters, Tricia & Tonia. Step son, Jim (Charlene) Dolezal of Julesburg, CO and their daughters
Gretchen and Rachel.
Step daughter, Marjorie (Joe) Rosencrance of Colorado Springs, CO and their daughters, Jamie & Jennifer.
Step daughter, Theresa (Bill) Stephens of Longmont, CO their children Tonia and Greg. Great-Grandchildren, Mara, Noah & Destiny and Hailey, Lindsey & Sidney
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 27th at the Gubser Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mark Carlton of the New Hope Church officiating. Cremation was chosen and there will be no visitation. A memorial has been established to the Helen Keller School for the Blind in her memory. Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gary B. Brownell, Julesburg
1937 - 2008
Gary B. Brownell, 71, of Julesburg, CO died September 19, 2008 in Julesburg. Memorial Services were held Tuesday September 23, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Mennonite Church in Julesburg with Pastor Art Roth Officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Gary was born March 7, 1937 to Vernon and Dora (Smith) Brownell in La Valle, Wisconsin. He attended Elementary and High School in Wisconsin. Gary was employed by the Great Western Sugar Beet Company.
Gary married Joan Saiser in Chappell, NE, November 21, 1957 and the two were married until her death in 1997. Gary enjoyed collecting coins and other small treasures. He also enjoyed his dog Chi Chi, horseshoes, visiting, and metal detecting.
Gary was always cheerful and laid back. A very patient man who loved to go out with his dog riding in his wheel chair.
Gary is Survived by his daughter Rhonda Miller and huband Dennis of Chappell, NE, his granddaughters Natasha & Natalie Miller, sister Helen “Toots” Seitz, and lots of family & friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife Joan Brownell, parents Vernon and Dora, his brothers Vernon Brownell, George Willis, Jack Willis, and Les Willis, and his sister Vera Ranum.

Alice Marilyn Meline Krieger, Aurora, Colorado
1936 - 2008
Alice Marilyn Meline Krieger passed away October 14, 2008 in Aurora, CO
Marilyn was born to Carl & Alice Meline on February 3, 1936. She graduated from Colorado Women’s College in 1956. On September 8, 1957 she maried Bill Krieger. They were married for 51 years and spent their lives in Aurora, Colorado.
She is survived by her husband, Bill, daughters & sons-in law, Tim & Ginger Jansson of Evans, CO, Dan & Jamie Talamantes of Highlands Ranch, CO, son & daughter-in-law, Bill & Janene Krieger of Aurora, CO; six grandchildren; brother Bud Meline of Julesburg, CO and sister & brother-in-law, Tom & Jamie Frey of Norfolk, NE.
A memorial service is 2 pm on Saturday, October 18 at Fairmount Mortuary, 430 S. Quebec St, Denver, CO 80231. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
David Mercer, Ogallala, Nebraska
1932 - 2008
David Mercer, age 76, longtime Ogallala businessman, died October 17, at Indian Hills Manor. David Lee Mercer was born September 6, 1932 in Big Springs, NE, the son of Merrill and Reatha Ledbetter Mercer.
Dave attended grade and high school in Big Springs, graduating in 1952. Dave enlisted in the US Navy in May 1952. In 1957 he returned to Big Springs for a short time. He then worked near Wiggins, CO. for an oil drilling company, and later moved to Julesburg and operated Dave’s Texaco Service Station. He later moved to a larger building and managed a Phillips 66 Station. He also drove the south route school bus.
Dave belonged to the Lions Club and several organizations. He was a past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge AF & AM #81 of Holyoke. He was baptized in the Christian faith and was a member of the Methodist Church in Ogallala.
In June of 1970, he married Wanda Steinwart. He owned and operated Mercer Tree Service from 1970 until 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, step-son Clinton Steinwart, his brother Marvin Mercer and his in-laws Alma and Loren Robinette.
Dave is survived by his wife Wanda of Ogallala, step sons Rodney Steinwart (LuAnn) of Kearney, Roger Steinwart (Janet) of Ogallala, two step daughters Christy O’Hara (George M.) of Lakewood, and Janice Larson (Douglas) of Lincoln; four sons: Mat Mercer of Ft. Collins; Pat Mercer of Broomfield, CO; Ty Mercer (Teri) of Platteville, CO; and Shawn Foster (Merrie) of Washington; two brothers, Monte Mercer (Janice) of Julesburg and Dan Mercer (JoEllen) of Sun City, AZ; and a sister-in-law Ree Walker (Charles) of Ogallala.
Visitation was Monday, October 20 at Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala with funeral services held on Tuesday at the First United Church. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church and Ogallala Ambulance Squad. Interment was in the Ogallala Cemetery
with military honors given by the Ogallala Veterans Organization.
Arthur L. "Junior" Dittmar, Julesburg
Arthur L. “Junior” Dittmar, 79, of Julesburg, CO passed away November 2, 2008 in Julesburg. Visitation will be held 10 AM – 6 PM Tuesday November 4, 2008 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home in Julesburg. Funeral services will be Wednesday November 5, 2008 at 10AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Julesburg with Pastor Trent Christensen Officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery. Memorials can be made in Arthur’s name to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Building Fund) P.O. Box 72 Julesburg, CO 80737. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Fern Miller
1927 - 2008
Born in Petersburg, Ontario, Canada, to John and Matilda Schwartzentruber Roth on September 1st, 1927.
Martha entered her eternal home on Monday, October 20th, 2008 at Wooster, Ohio, following a lengthy struggle with diabetes.
Funeral services were held at the Smithville Mennonite Church, Smithville, Ohio on Saturday, October 25th, with Pastors Todd Martin and Arthur Roth officiating. Internment was at Smithville Mennonite Cemetery, Smithville, Ohio.
She is survived by her children Gloria (Mark) Wilson of Wooster, Ohio, Brian (Jane) Miller of New Market, Va. Tim (Katie) Grigg-Miller of Silver Lake, Ohio, Brenda Miller of Orville, Ohio, seven grandchildren, sister Mildred Hauder of Milford, Nebraska, brothers Arthur (Marjorie) Roth of Julesburg, Colorado, Vernon (Betty) Roth of Breslau, Ontario, Canada, Clare Roth of Petersburg, Ontario, Canada, brother-in-law John Holst of New Dundee, Ontario, Canada and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack Miller, sister Beatrice Holst, three brother-in-laws and a niece.
Her hobbies were oil paints, embroidering pictures, traveling with her husband, flower arranging and all manner of crafts. She was very active in her church, Smithville Mennonite, where she served as historian for 20 years, taught Sunday School, and Bible School. She graduated from Ontario Mennonite Bible School, studied at Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, Va. spending over eight years in voluntary service. She was a homemaker and worked in the Wooster Schools for over 18 years.

E. Bruce Henry
E. Bruce Henry, age 57, was born March 12, 1951 to Junior and Lola Henry. He passed away October 26, 2008 at his home in Lakewood, Colorado.
Bruce graduated from Revere High School. He served in the U.S. Army after high school. When returning from the service, he spent the rest of his life as a journeyman plumber in the Denver area.
Bruce learned to hunt and fish at a very young age. He still enjoyed both and went when he could.
Survivors include his mother, Lola Henry; sister Char (Elmer) Alexander; brother Nate (Laurie) Henry; nieces Trina (Kevin) Brott, Tina (Matt) Bachman, Leslie (Clint) Snell and Lynn (Brian) Togstead; and many great nieces and nephews and friends.
Bruce is preceded in death by his wife Helen; father Junior; and his grandparents.
Pauline Martin
1911 - 2008
Pauline Mae (Knight) Martin, 97, of Holyoke, died Oct. 26, 2008 at Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke.
She was born in Elsie, Neb., the eldest of four children born to William Sherman Knight and Lydia Ellen (Miller) Knight on Sept. 14, 1911. As an eighth grader, she played basketball on the high school team. Upon graduation from Elsie High School, she attended Kearney State Teachers College.
Pauline married William Robert “Dale” Martin in 1932. They resided in the Elsie/Grainton area where five of their children were born. In 1942 they bought a farm southeast of Holyoke where the family all moved. Their last daughter was born after moving to Colorado.
Pauline was kept busy caring for her family, raising a large garden, chickens, turkeys and helping Dale with the livestock. Having lots to do, she still had fun impersonating Minnie Pearl at area banquets and community events. In 1950, they got involved in the registered black Angus cattle operation and started the Martin Angus Ranch, which is now under fifth-generation ownership.
In 1976 they retired and moved into Holyoke. Pauline enjoyed living in town, becoming involved in AARP, the Christian Church and Crafty Quilters. She was forever baking, and was known to many as the “sweet petal” woman.
Her family was very important to her and people seldom left her home without taking buns, sweet petals or caramel corn with them. Even her great-great-grandchildren enjoyed the sweet petals, and every grandchild had a quilt that she made.
In the last few years, she resided at Carriage House and enjoyed playing cards, helping whoever needed it and going to water aerobics-even at age 96.
Pauline is survived by her son Bob Martin of Holyoke; daughters Bonnie and Jim McFadden of Sedgwick, Jackie and Don Hill of Burkburnett, Texas, Katheryn Cannon of Salt Lake City, Utah and Ronda and Bob L. Fetzer of Haxtun; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale in 1985; son Bill; daughter-in-law Phyllis Martin; son-in-law Gary Cannon; granddaughter Debra Martin; great-grandson Dusty Martin; parents Sherman and Lydia Knight; and three brothers, Earl, Roy and Leo.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church in Holyoke with Pastors Lou Encinias and Jim Blake officiating.
Burial will be at Holyoke Memorial Park. Baucke Funeral Home of Holyoke is in charge of arrangements.
Cynthia "Cindy" Louise Span-Enos, Glendale
1961 - 2008
Cynthia “Cindy” Louise Span-Enos of Glenndale, Colorado passed away on October 25, 2008 . She was born January 18, 1961 in Boulder to James M and Emma L. (Travis) Span.
Cindy attended Julesburg High School. She was active in 4-H.
On January 10, 1996 she married John Enos in Hayward, California. They were married 12 years.
She worked in numerous restaurants, and was manager of one in Hayward, Cali., for many years.
Cindy returned to Colorado seven years ago to be with her parents.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents Martin and Georgia Span and Bill and Mary Travis.
Cindy leaves behind her husband John; brothers, Joseph (Terry) Span of Sterling, Colo., Thomas (Tina) Span of Chappell, Neb.; and sister Deborah (Roger) Anderson of Julesburg; stepdaughters, Rose Enos of Alpine, Texas, Deloris Enos of Hayward, Cali., three grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on at 10 a.m., November 15, 2008 at the Julesburg Mennonite Church with Pastor Arthur Roth officiating.
