Dale Hess

A Celebration of Life was held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the Peacock Family Chapel with Reverend Bill Williamson of the Holly Evangelical Free Church. Interment will follow at the Holly Cemetery.
Dale was born on June 17, 1947 at Dodge City, Kansas to Lonnie C. and Rubie M. (Koontz) Hess and departed this life on September 30, 2007 at his home in Holly with his family by his side. Dale was 60 years old.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Rubie, and his father-in-law, Clarence Coder.
Dale is survived by his wife Connie Hess of the family home in Holly; a son Cody (Kelli) Hess also of Holly; a daughter Kim (Mike) Trout of Lamar; grandchildren Brandon and Ashlyn Hess, and Tyler and Dayle Marie Trout; father and stepmother Lonnie and Sallie Hess of Holly; Sister Lonetta (Bob) Brandes of Ellinwood, Ks; Mother-in-law Doris Coder of Holly; Sisters-in-Law Charlotte (Wesley) Pack of Lovington, NM; Diana (Keith) Davis of Holly; and Janet (Larry) Haddock of Wellington, Tx. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Holly Fire and Ambulance or to the Lamar Area Hospice directly or in care of the funeral home office.

Garrett "Doc" H. McNay, Sterling

1911 - 2007

Garrett H. “Doc” McNay, 96, of Sterling, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007. A memorial service will be held Jan. 10 at Christ United Methodist Church in Sterling with Revs. Joyce DeToni-Hill and Derek DeToni-Hill officiating.
Garrett was born June 9, 1911 to Dr. Leo N. and Sarah (Garrett) McNay in Garden Grove, Iowa. He grew up in Garden Grove and was a tackle on his 1928 high school football team which was undefeated and unscored upon. He graduated from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) on June 9, 1936 with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and became a third generation veterinarian. While at Iowa State, he was a member of the cossacks equestrian team.
Mr. McNay married Norma “Kibbie” McKibben on Oct. 1, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa. They had known each other since they were both three years old. To Garrett’s delight, Norma sat in front of him from the fifth grade through high school graduation. To this union was born three sons, Tom, Bob and Jim.
He spent five years in the Army during World War II serving in the European Theater of operations. He was in the Veterinary Corps, a branch of the Medical Corps, where he reached the rank of Major.
In 1965, after 20 years of large animal veterinary practice in Leon, Iowa, Mr. McNay decided he was not going to die in a barn lot and became a veterinary meat inspector for the federal government. He first worked in Brush and moved to Sterling in 1967. He retired in 1976.
After retirement, he was active in the Meals on Wheels program and helped at the Blue Skies Therapeutic Riding Center. He enjoyed horses, dancing, playing golf, snow and water skiing, riding his bicycle, playing cards, working in his yard and reading.
Mr. McNay was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Sterling Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge at Garden Grove, Iowa, several professional organizations and the Sterling Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kibbie, on Nov. 12, 2005; son, Tom; sisters, Lillian Thompson and Mildred Sheldon; and brother, Carder McNay.
Mr. McNay is survived by his sons, Bob and wife Barbi of Stanley, Kan., and Jim and wife Nancy of Sterling; granddaughter, Heather and husband Rick Lechman; and grandsons, Doug and wife Dawn, Greg, and Michael McNay; and two great-granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Friends of the Library Building Fund, Box 1535, Sterling, Colo. 80751 or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Harvey P. Green, Morgan County

1922 - 2008

Harvey P. Green, 85, of Morgan County, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, in Windsor. Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 15., at the Heer Mortuary in Brush. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Immanuel Congregational Church in Brush. Interment will be in the Brush Memorial Cemetery.
He was born Oct. 9, 1922, to John R. and Alice E. Green in Brush. Following graduation from Brush High School, Mr. Green served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.
On Dec. 25, 1942, he married Henrietta Geist in Fort Morgan.
After his discharge, the Green family began dryland farming in Morgan County and eventually bought land near Antelope Springs where he farmed for many years. He retired from farming in 1992.
Mr. Green was a member of the Immanuel Congregational Church in Brush; BPOE No. 1143; life member of VFW No. 2551, American Legion No. 68, and CBI Veterans Association. In 1990 he was awarded the Outstanding Conservation Tillage Farmer.
He is survived by his children, Gwen Miller and Barbara Weschler, both of Granbury, Texas, and Jim Green of Greeley; grandchildren, Heather Weschler–Ruiz, Zack Weschler, Jim Didcoct, Deborah Didcoct, Erich Green; step-granddaughter, Darla Barnes; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta; brothers, Myron, George, and Raymond; sister, Ethel Cox, and his parents.

Leslie E. O'Hare, New Raymer

1926 - 2008

Leslie E. O’Hare, 81, of New Raymer, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at the Hospice Unit of North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kimball, Neb. The Rev. Roger Gillming will officiate.
Leslie was born Aug. 18, 1926, to James Guy and Alice (Brouhard) O’Hare on the family homestead at Vim, Colo. He spent his entire life on the family ranch. He attended a country school a mile from his home, and for eight consecutive years, was the only pupil in his particular grade. He later moved to Cheyenne and boarded with his sister where he attended Cheyenne High School, graduating in 1943.
For a time after high school, he apprenticed as an airplane mechanic before returning to the ranch where he remained for the rest of his life.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Kimball, Neb. He had served on the Weld County Weed Board, the Board of Directors of Homestead Bible Camp of Roggen, the American Missionary Fellowship, and the Prairie School Board. He had also served as an instructor for the 4-H Auto Mechanic program.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; son, Steve O’Hare and wife Gigi of New Raymer; daughters, Denise Curtis and husband Darrell of Sterling and Ft. Collins, Karen Pipp and husband Timothy of Thornton, and Cheryl Keil and husband Scot of Topeka, Kan.; sister, Virginia Hicks of Napa, Idaho; sisters-in-law, Claudette, Alma, Wanda, and Karalee; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and his wife’s brother, Richard Brewer, who lived with the family since he was a young boy.
Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jasper, Melvin and Virgil; and his sister, Pearl Eickbush.
Memorial contributions may be made to Preston Ranch Ministries, Box 44, Roggen, Co. 80652, or Trinity United Methodist Church for use by the music department. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball, Neb. is in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Weiss, Brush

1927 - 2008

Carl Weiss, 80, lifelong resident of the Brush area, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at the Medical Center of the Rockies near Loveland. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Heer Mortuary in Brush. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the United Methodist Church, 1701 Edmunds St. in Brush. Interment will follow at Brush Memorial Cemetery.
He was born March 20, 1927, to John and Mary Weiss in Keota.
On Jan. 15, 1950, he married Marie Stites in Denver. Prior to retirement, Mr. Weiss operated a ranch south of Brush.
Mr. Weiss is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Zion of Fort Morgan, Faye Weiss of Brush, Carol Schweiger of Merino, Joanne Schweitzer of Loveland, and Donna Beyer of Utila Bay Island, Honduras; brother, Harry Weiss of Brush; sisters, Bertha Ostermiller and Elsie McKay, both of Brush; 18 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, Alex, and Walter; sisters, Pauline, and Rosie Naibauer; and his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brush United Methodist Church or to the Cowboy Church in Sterling in care of Heer Mortuary.

Opal M. Kruse, Commerce City, and formerly of Hillrose

1920 - 2008

Opal M. Kruse, 87, of Commerce City, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, in Northglenn. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Tennant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert L. Wedow officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Opal was born on March 25, 1920, to Jacob and Opal (Frank) Nab in Hillrose. She attended school through the eighth grade.
She worked at St. Lukes Hospital in Denver, retiring after 25 years. She was married to Kelburn Headley for 14 years, and later to John Kruse for 14 years. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, visiting with her children and grandchildren, and loving life.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Hawrylyshyn and husband Mike of Arizona; sons, Kelburn Paul Headley and wife Sharon, Ronald Headley, and Allen Headley, all of Denver, Marvin Headley and wife Karen of Arvada, Terry Headley and wife Jeannie of Thornton, and Melvin Kruse and wife Nancy of Brighton; brother, Joe Nab of Oregon; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Opal and Jacob Nab; brothers, John and Albert Nab; sisters, Barbara Stoltz, Katherine Korbe, Rose Vickers, Mary Gentz, and Pauline Luft.
Memorials may be made to a donor’s choice in care of Tennant Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.

Richard "Dick" Dale Uhlenhopp, Brush

1917 - 2008

Richard Dale “Dick” Uhlenhopp, 90, of Brush, died Feb. 3, 2008 in Brush. A private memorial service was held Feb. 9 in Akron, followed by burial at the Akron cemetery.
Dick was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Kesley, Iowa. After graduating from Kesley High School in 1934, Dick briefly took up boxing. He especially enjoyed reminiscing on the days he fought in the semi-finals of the 1935 Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Chicago.
By 1937, Dick had moved to Colorado where he worked in Denver until 1939, when he came to Sterling to manage the original Wash Brothers Grocery. In 1944 he and his wife, Shirley (Mahaffey), and young son, Ron, moved to Akron where Dick was partner, and later owner, of the Akron Wash Brothers Grocery. He was a founding member of the independent grocers’ association, Associated Grocers of Colorado. Over the years Dick and his brother, Milt, of Brush, opened supermarkets in Sterling (U-Save Supers and Big T Supers), Fort Morgan (Big T Supers) and Lamar (Best Bet Supers). Dick retired from the grocery business in 1991.
In the mid 1960s, Dick ventured into agriculture, owning the Double D Ranch southeast of Brush. He enjoyed both farming and ranching initially in conjunction with Dave Brown, now of Sterling, and later with son, Ron, who continues to work the ranch.
For many years Dick was a member of the Akron Volunteer Fire Department, The Akron Lions Club, the Akron Odd Fellows, and the Sterling J & L Coffee Group.
The Uhlenhopp family celebrated many happy occasions with Dick, the highlight being last year on his 90th birthday when 32 of his descendants and their spouses celebrated with him in Las Vegas.
A host of survivors include son, Ronald of Akron; and daughters, Sandy Jones and husband Phil of Winter Park, Sharon Stevens and husband Tom of Fort Morgan, and Rickie Fray and husband Russell of Las Vegas. Additionally he is missed by 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Shirley; daughter, Vickie; and infant son, Donald.
Donations in his name may be made to the Akron Volunteer Fire Department.

Mary Violet Seely, Sterling

1955 - 2008

Mary Violet Seely, 55, of Sterling, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the Morgan Church of the Nazarene in Fort Morgan. Services will conclude at the church.
Mrs. Seely was born Sept. 30, 1955, to Jerry and Betty (Orcutt) McGilvray in Wichita, Kan.
She married Allen L. Seely on Oct. 7, 1978, in Cripple Creek. She moved to Morgan County in the late 1980s from Morrison but had spent the last three years living in Sterling.
Mrs. Seely was active in 4-H at both the county and state levels in the shooting events and knew kids all over the state from these events. She was also a member of the Prairie Lion’s Club and had been superintendant of the State Fair. Mary enjoyed fishing, camping, Celtic events, horses.
Mrs. Seely is survived by her husband, Al of Sterling; two sons, Jerald Seely of Norfolk, Va., and Wade Seely of Thornton; one brother, Mike McGilvray of Hermitage, Mo.; one sister, Jerrilynn Reeves of Wabolo, Mo.; and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name in care of the Heer Mortuary in Brush.
Heer Mortuary and Crematory handled the cremation arrangements.

Charles "Chuck" Francis Custer Jr., Fort Morgan

1921 - 2008

Charles “Chuck” Francis Custer Jr., 86, of Fort Morgan, died March 27, 2008, at the Sterling Living Center in Sterling. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. A luncheon will follow the service.
Mr. Custer was born Oct. 13, 1921, to Frances (Mathis) and Charles Francis Custer Sr. in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in animal husbandry.
Custer served in the Coast Guard from 1941 to 1945. He worked as a beef sales manager for Swift & Co., Armour, Sterling Colorado Beef and Topco. Since 1983, he was a resident of Fort Morgan.
He was active in the Boy Scouts, serving at the Council, District and Troop levels for more than 25 years.
He served as a member and president of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Council in Grand Island, Neb., and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 576 in O’Fallon for 44 years and a Noble of the Tehama Shriners of Hastings, Neb. He also was a member of the U.S. Golf Association, the Fort Morgan Pitch Club and the Elks in Fort Morgan.
Mr. Custer is survived by his wife, Cleora Mae; son, Edward Allan Custer; daughter, Frances Mae Dimick; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Doris Jean Anderson.
Memorial gifts can be made to the James B. Harrigan Kidney Dialysis Center in Sterling.

Alexa Nicole Garcia, Brush

1987 - 2008

Alexa Nicole Garcia, 20, of Brush, died Thursday morning, April 10, 2008, from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 76 east of Brush. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Heer Mortuary in Brush. Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 6 p.m. Sunday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Brush. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday. April 14, also at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Brush Memorial Cemetery.
Ms. Garcia was born Nov. 29, 1987, to Arnoldo and Veronica (Garcia) Maltos in Iowa City, Iowa. She attended Brush schools and graduated from Brush High School with the class of 2006. At the time of her death, she was working for Ehrlich Motors in Sterling.
She was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Brush. She enjoyed listening to music, spending time with her daughter and watching her younger brothers play baseball.
Ms. Garcia is survived by her parents; her daughter, Brisa Aguirre-Garcia; three brothers, Arturo Maltos-Garcia, Arnoldo Maltos-Garcia and Alejandro Maltos-Garcia, all of Brush; and her grandparents of Mexico.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heer Mortuary, 222 Cameron St., Brush, CO 80723. The funds will be put in savings for her daughter.
Heer Mortuary in Brush is in charge of arrangements.

John O. Cable, Brush, CO

1923 - 2008

He was born June 1, 1923 in Harrisburg, CO to Harley and Mary Vivian Cable.
He served in the US Army during WWII.
On June 1, 1952 he married Faye M. Griese at Last Chance, CO. He was a farmer/rancher and also worked at the beef plant and the sugar factory.
He ran the Last Chance Motel and later Crain’s Caf/.
Mr. Cable was a member of the VFW #2551 and the Morgan Church of the Nazarene.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking and fried chicken as his favorite meal.
He is survived by his wife, Faye of Brush; four children, Vivian Reed, and her husband, Clarence, of Greeley, Diana Partney, and her husband Jim, of Yuma, CO, Gloria Webb, and her husband, Ken, of Brush; and Wesley Cable, and his wife, Nancy, of Cheyenne, WY; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Virginia and Barbara, and one brother, Harl.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Cable were Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Morgan Church of the Nazarene in Fort Morgan at 11 a.m.
Inurnment was in the Brush Memorial Cemetery Columbarium.
Memorial gifts may be given to the American Heart Association or the Morgan Church of the Nazarene c/o the Heer Mortuary in Brush.
