Nancy Clara Smith, Fort Morgan
1935 - 2008
Nancy Clara Smith, 72, a resident of Fort Morgan since 1995, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan.
She was born Dec. 7, 1935, in Rocky Ford, Colo., to Nobel and Dorothy (Thompson) Davis. Nancy married Ralph Eugene Smith on Aug. 6, 1955, in Raton, N.M. He died in 1992.
Nancy enjoyed drawing and painting, especially landscapes.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph E. Smith Jr. of Leadville and Ted Smith of Fort Morgan; one brother, Danny Davis; one sister, Mary Lou Miller of Brush; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph; five sisters, Betty, Barbara, Hester, Dorothy and Carol; and two brothers, Jimmy and Billy Davis.
Memorial services will be Friday, Sept. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan. Services will conclude at the mortuary.
The Heer Mortuary and Crematory in Fort Morgan is in charge of the arrangements.
Irene Jean Weimer, Greeley
1926 - 2008
Irene Jean Weimer, 82, of Greeley, died Sept. 21, 2008, at Fairacres Manor in Greeley.
She was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Brush to Jacob and Mollie (Meininger) Lebsock. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1944. In 1945 she worked for a real estate and insurance business in Fort Morgan. She married Gottfried “Fritz” Weimer on Feb. 16, 1947, in Fort Morgan. She then left the work force and became a housewife and mother. Her husband passed away on Dec. 6, 1962, of leukemia.
Mrs. Weimer worked for Meadow Gold Dairy until her early retirement in 1983. Finding she was too young to retire, after one year she returned to work for a real estate and land development firm owned by Dick Weber until her final retirement.
She was a member of the Ports of Call, Amigos Club, Knife and Fork Club and treasurer for Republican Dave Owens.
She was extremely active throughout her life. She enjoyed dances, singing, traveling and taking the mystery tours (destination unknown) with Ports of Call. Mrs. Weimer was a fabulous cook and her family never turned down an offer from her to prepare dinner. She always made time for her children and grandchildren and loved to be with her family.
After the death of her husband, she raised three children (ages 14, 12 and 9) by herself at age 36. After the death of her son on March 23, 1969, Greeley West High School honored his memory with an Outstanding Scholar/Athlete Memorial Award.
She is survived her daughters, Lynda and Jim Campbell of Greeley, and Debbie Condreay and her friend Bill Naibauer of Greeley; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Elmira J. Weimer of Arvada and Ruth J. Ware of Billings, Mont.; and numerous nieces, nephews and their extended families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gottfried; son Gary W. Wiemer; brothers Edward, Clarence, Albert and Leroy Lebsock; and a sister, Lucille E. Schlothauer.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at First Congregational Church, 2101 16th St. in Greeley. A private inurnment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens, where she will rest peacefully next to her son and husband.

Kenneth E. Staley
1936 - 2008
Kenneth E. Staley, 71, of Las Vegas, Nev., passed away Sept. 1, 2008.
He was born Dec. 17, 1936, in Fort Morgan.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth E. Staley; four sisters, Mary Lou Schomburg of Fort Morgan, Virginia Brening of Sun City West, Ariz., Karen Roberts of Lakewood and Linda Young of Ashland, Ore.
His parents, Jake and Pauline Staley, preceded him in death.
At the request of the deceased, there was cremation and no memorial services.
Shirley J. Scott
1931 - 2008
Lifelong resident enjoyed cooking, gardening
Shirley J. Scott, 77, lifelong Fort Morgan resident, died Saturday morning at Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan.
Miss Scott was born July 21, 1931, in Fort Morgan to Harley and Bernice (Meyers) Scott.
She enjoyed cooking, needlework, fishing and being outdoors. Miss Scott liked her gardens and especially enjoyed family gatherings. She was an avid Bronco and Rockies fan.
Survivors include her two sisters, Joan Latoski of Dacono and Betty Wolfe of California; and two brothers, Clarence Scott of Hillrose and Gerald Scott of Loveland.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Houston and Thelma DeBey; three brothers, Clayton Scott, Clifford Scott and Dallas Scott; and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan. Inurnment will follow in Memory Gardens in Fort Morgan. A potluck will follow the inurnment at the First Baptist Church, 618 Main St. in Fort Morgan.

Lila Mahan
1918 - 2008
Taught elementary school in Stoneham
Lila Schrack Willich Mahan, 89, a resident of Sterling, died Monday in Sterling.
Mrs. Mahan was born Nov. 19, 1918, to Vern and Mabel Schrack in Clarinda, Iowa. The family homesteaded on a farm near Stoneham where she began her education experiences in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1929, the small country schools were consolidated into one school in Stoneham, where she graduated in 1936. After graduation, she attended Colorado State Teacher’s College in Greeley and obtained her teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was in a one-room school in Vim, Colo.
In 1939, she married Robert “Bob” Willich of Stoneham. In 1942, she began teaching elementary school in Stoneham, where she taught 17 years. In 1963, her husband died.
She married Eugene “Gene” Willich of Stoneham in 1965, and left teaching. The couple traveled throughout the western United States with her husband’s job until her husband’s death in 1971.
In 1972, Mrs. Mahan moved from Stoneham to Sterling and began teaching again, being employed as a remedial reading teacher at Sexson School. She retired from teaching after four years and began working part time in retail clothing.
In 1981, she married Ray Mahan. The couple enjoyed traveling and attending their grandchildren’s sporting events.
Mrs. Mahan was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary, holding numerous offices, working with Girls State and elementary school essay contests, being a 4-H leader and a member of the Methodist faith. She was a lifelong learner and loved reading, traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Her love for education is best noted in 1984 when she received the Outstanding Pioneer Educator award.
Mrs. Mahan is survived by two daughters, Sherrill Brammer of Sterling and Kay Dollerschell of Stoneham; two stepdaughters, Carole Quint of Sterling and Bonnie Cox of Grand Junction; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Ellen; brothers, Thomas, Duane and Rolland; and her husbands, Bob Willich, Gene Willich and Ray Mahan.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Gary Meadows officiating. Burial will be held at Prairie View Cemetery
in Stoneham.
Betty J. Nestor
1927 - 2008
Worked for government during war time
Betty J. Nestor, 81, of Wiggins died early Tuesday morning at the Valley View Villa Care Center in Fort Morgan.
She was born April 10, 1927, in Iliff to Franklin and Agnes Geddes.
She married Leroy Nestor on Dec. 11, 1945, in Ogden, Utah.
During the war time she worked for the government packaging equipment to be sent overseas. She later worked for the Johnson Windmill Co. as a secretary.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy of Wiggins; her daughter, Thelma Carr and husband Larry of Fort Morgan; four sons, Edward Nestor and wife Lois of Eaton, Frank Nestor and wife Janie of Anchorage, Alaska, Steve Nestor of Greeley, and Wesley Nestor and wife Lynn of Layton, Utah; two sisters, Mae Garner of Englewood and Thelma Barrett of Ogden, Utah; two brothers, Delbert Geddes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and John “Jack” Geddes of Ogden, Utah; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter, Stevie Nestor, and one sister.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Heer Mortuaries Chapel in Fort Morgan.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Heer Mortuaries Chapel. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery.

Thomas Elmer Barker
1975 - 2008
Manager of Q Ranch near Wiggins
Thomas Elmer Barker, 32, lifelong resident of Morgan County, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008.
He was born Oct. 16, 1975, in Fort Morgan to Elmer and Diane (Amen) Barker. He attended Weldona Schools and graduated from high school there in 1994. At the time of his death, Thomas was the manager of Q Ranch near Wiggins.
Tom enjoyed working with cattle, hunting, golfing and playing poker. He also liked woodworking when time allowed and he especially enjoyed kids.
Survivors include his parents, Elmer and Diane Barker of Weldona; his sister, Amy Williams of Grapevine, Texas; his maternal grandfather, Ralph Amen of Fort Morgan; and his two nieces, Alexandria Williams and Arabella Williams.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lee and Marie Barker; his maternal grandmother, Virginia Amen; and his uncle, Stephen Amen.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the United Presbyterian Church, 1300 E. Riverview Ave. in Fort Morgan. Inurnment will follow in Serenity Falls Columbarium in Fort Morgan.

Roger Dale Eskew
1950 - 2008
Enjoyed hunting, fishing, children
Roger “Weasel” Dale Eskew, 58, of Sterling died Sunday in Sterling.
Eskew was born Feb. 2, 1950, in DeNova, Colo., to Melvin Raymond and Ina Faye Gaskill Eskew. He graduated from Akron High School in 1968.
He moved to Sterling and married Shirley Colley in June 1972. The couple later divorced.
Eskew worked at the Excel Beef Plant, then later worked with his brother Steve Eskew in construction, retiring due to disability. He lost his life with a short bout of cancer and donated his body to cancer research.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing pool, especially his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his sons, Jeremy Eskew and Thommie Albrant, both of Hudson, and Joshua Eskew of Aurora; daughters, Rickie Brandsted of Pueblo and Selena Eskew of Sterling; brothers, Stephen Eskew of Sterling, Raymond (Mike) Eskew of Fort Morgan, Howard (Rick) Eskew of Otis, Ronnie Eskew, Roy Eskew and Benjamin Eskew, all of Akron; sisters, Cora (Peggy) O’Connor of Greeley, and Cindy Thompson of Rollinsville, Colo.; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Elmer Eskew.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with services concluding at the funeral home. Steve Eskew will be officiating the ceremony. Inurnment will be held at Riverside Cemetery.

Ruth V. Gugelman
1924 - 2008
Born on family farm north of Snyder
Ruth V. Gugelman, 84, of Fort Morgan died Saturday at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan.
Mrs. Gugelman was born Jan. 17, 1924, on the family farm north of Snyder to Charles and Florence (Blanchard) Johnson. She graduated from the Brush High School in 1941.
She married Robert Gugelman in December 1963. They lived in Liberal, Kan., for many years. After her husband’s death, she moved to Fort Morgan to be closer to her family.
Mrs. Gugelman loved writing letters, reading and bowling.
She is survived by her children, Robert D. Gugelman of Loveland, Joe Gugelman of New Castle, Darla Starman of Loveland and Bonnie Schneider of Wellington; her brother, John A. Johnson of Fort Morgan; her sisters, Edna Bolinger of Brush and Ruby Fink of Bonanza, Ore.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Gugelman was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Paul Johnson and Carl Johnson; one sister, Alta White; and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church in Fort Morgan, the service will conclude at the church. Private inurnment will be held on Friday in the Serenity Falls Columbarium.
