Edward A. Lundberg
Edward A. Lundberg, 80, of Estes Park died at his Estes Park home Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003.
He was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio to Sylvester and Alma (Dister) Lundberg. He graduated from St Ignatius High School, John Carroll University, and Case Western Reserve Medical School in the Cleveland, Ohio area. He married Virginia Nock in Berea, Ohio on Oct. 16, 1948. He maintained a private internal medicine practice, and taught at Case Western Reserve, retiring from there as Clinical Professor of Medicine. Dr. Lundberg was a Captain in the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. He and his family visited Estes Park for 25 years before retiring here in July of 1986. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Church in Estes Park, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Lundberg is survived by his wife, Virginia of Estes Park; children: James (Ceil) of Mason, Ohio, Thomas (Patricia) of Portland, Ore., John of Fort Collins, Colo., Mark of St. Louis, Mo., Joan Smith (Tim) of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Judith Melick (Michael) of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Mary Rose (Robert) of Basalt, Colo., Martha Lundberg-Cooper (David) of Portland, Ore., Ann Lundberg of Denver, Colo., and Marjorie Lundberg of La Jolla, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister Betty Cassidy of Naples, Fla., and a sister-in-law Rita Lundberg of Jackson, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday Aug. 21, 2003. at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in Estes Park . Memorial Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Estes Valley in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Avenue Estes Park, CO 80517.
Edgar M. Stopher
Edgar M. Stopher, 93, of Mesa, Ariz., died Sept. 22, 2003.
He was born Sept. 25, 1909 to Mabel and John Stopher in Loveland. He was a nephew of noted pioneer and Rocky Mountain National Park homesteader, Abner Sprague.
Stopher was raised in Loveland, graduating from Loveland High School in 1929. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Colorado in 1932. He was a member of SAE fraternity. He also attended several other universities, studying hotel management. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a major, stationed primarily at Buckley Field.
In the early 1940s he took over the summer operation of Sprague’s Lodge from his uncle. He ran a guest ranch in Arizona during the winter months. When Sprague’s original homestead in Moraine Park became available, Stopher purchased Steads Ranch and Hotel and sold his Arizona property. He operated Sprague’s Lodge and Steads Ranch concurrently until the government lease for Sprague’s ran out in 1957. He continued operating Steads until 1962 when the government purchased the property.
Stopher then went to work with the Del Webb Corporation in its hotel division in Arizona. He was later the general manager of the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. In 1970, he joined the Sheraton Corporation as general manager of the French Lick Springs Hotel in French Lick, Ind. After nine years, he became the general manager for the Sheraton in Steamboat Springs, Colo. He rose to area manager for the North America Division and in successive years, was named vice president and area director of development. He retired in 1985.
Stopher was active in the Estes Park Community as a member of the chamber of commerce and as president of the board of education for Estes Park schools. A 32nd Degree Mason, he helped found the Estes Park Masonic Lodge. Professionally, he was instrumental in establishing the Colorado Dude Ranch Association and was active in the Colorado Hotel Association.
Following his retirement, out of respect and affection for his uncle, he worked with the Rocky Mountain Nature Association in publishing Sprague’s autobiography “My Pioneer Life – the Memoirs of Abner E. Sprague.”
He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth ‘Libby” Stopher.
He is survived by daughters Karen Stopher Stapleton of Loveland; Lee Stopher and her husband Doug Mitchell of Tempe, Ariz., and Dana Stopher and her husband Dick Griffen of Steamboat Springs; son Robert Stopher and his wife Teresa of Gainesville, Texas and formerly of Estes Park; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Estes Park Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. 183 on Nov. 7, beginning at 3 p.m. A reception will follow the service. Interment will be in the Loveland Burial Park.

John I. Miller
John I. Miller, 86, of Scottsbluff, Neb., died Oct. 10, 2003, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering.
He was born in Kinder, La., on Nov. 30, 1916, to Abraham N. and Mabel Olive (Keys) Miller. He married Elizabeth Eubanks in Jennings, La., on Jan. 21, 1946. The couple lived in Reeves from 1946 to 1967 when they moved to Colorado. They moved to Kimball, Neb., in 1983, moving from there to Scottsbluff in 2001.
Miller served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served overseas for four years in North Africa, Italy and Germany. While living in Louisiana, he owned and operated a rice farm and raised cattle. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Estes Park where he served as a deacon.
His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Scottsbluff, a son, John Miller and his wife Jaclyn of Dix, La.; daughters Marie Searcy and her husband Charles of Silver Springs, Nev., and Sherry Strasburger and her husband Sid of Ellsworth, Neb. A brother, Alfred Ray Miller and his wife Jo Helen of Reeves and five grandchildren also survive him.
Graveside services were held Oct. 13, at the Dix Rural Cemetery. Pastor Mel Davis of First Baptist Church of Kimball. Memorials to the John Miller Memorial Fund can be made in care of Allnutt Funeral Service 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park, CO 80517.
Ann Budo
Ann Budo, 75, died on Dec. 1, 2003, at her home in Estes Park.
She was born May 23, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah to, Gilbert Vermont and Leona (Millard) Miller. She graduated from Spring Glen High School in Halper, Utah in 1947. She married Yoshiro Budo on May 8, 1948, in Grand Junction, Colo.
Prior to coming to Estes Park, she lived in New York, Florida, and Michigan. She also lived in Boulder for six years before moving to Estes Park in 1991. She worked her whole life as a waitress, but in Estes Park she was a homemaker. She liked spending time with friends and family, and enjoyed painting. After discovering her talent for painting, she created many works of art.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband who passed away in October 2002.
She is survived by a son, Tom and his wife Val Budo of Mesa Ariz.; a daughter Wendy and her husband Chester Sniegowski of Fairbanks, AK; and a brother Gilbert Miller of Price, Utah. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Gathering for friends and family will be held at the family residence, 2330 Pine Meadow Drive in Estes Park, on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 12 noon.

Charlotte Menard
Charlotte “Lucretia” Menard, 87, died November 28, 2003 at her Pine Valley Home in Estes Park. A Memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at 2 p.m. The location is pending and will be announced in Friday’s paper along with a full obituary.
Terry Fisher
Terry Fisher, 62, of Estes Park, formerly of Greeley, died at his home Nov. 26, 2003.
He was born Feb. 16, 1941, in Fort Morgan to Carl and Helen (Rahmon) Fisher.
He graduated from Greeley High School, and received a B.A. in Business from the University of Northern Colorado. He married Susan “Suzi” J. Wolfe on Nov. 26, 1971, in Greeley. Fisher worked at Berryhill Insurance Company in Fort Morgan, then at Flood and Peterson Insurance Company in Greeley for 29 years. He retired to Estes Park five years ago and attended the Northern Colorado College of Real Estate in Loveland and had recently joined Prudential Team Realty of Estes Park. He enjoyed golf, fishing, reading, activities with the Estes Park Newcomers, and being a Chamber Ambassador.
His father preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife Suzi of Estes Park; two sons, Jeff and his wife Tammy of Loveland, Bill and his wife Sara of Fort Collins; a brother Bill Fisher and his wife Jan of Lexington, KY; three grandchildren, Hannah and Madison of Loveland, and Marisa of Fort Collins, and one grandchild, Sunny, due in February; and his mother Helen of Fort Morgan.

Patricia Nash Cushing
Patricia “Pat” Nash Cushing, 73, of Estes Park died at the Estes Park Medical Center Nov. 28, 2003.
She was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Bangor, Me. to Austin W. and Carolyn (Bartlett) Nash. She graduated from Bangor High School and the University of Maine, Phi Beta Kappa at Orono with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Medical Technology. She married Raymond E. Cushing on Aug. 10, 1952, in Bangor. She was a Microbiologist for the Food and Drug Administration Hospital in Washington D.C. and The Center for Antibiotic Certification. She was later a civilian employee at U. S. Army Foreign Intelligence Technology Center. She later returned to the F. D. A. Bureau of Veterinary Medicine as a Consumer Safety Officer for Antibiotic Drug Applications.
After retiring, she worked a while at the Estes Park Medical Center lab, later she became active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, working up to President of the Colo. Federation of Chapters of the 7,000 member State Federation. She chaired two State Conventions and a Regional Conference at the Estes Park Convention Center in 1993, 1995 and 1999. She has several service awards and the NARFE Colo. Hall of Fame Award. She was a volunteer at the Estes Park Library and received the volunteer of the year award in 2002 at the convention center banquet. She was editor of the Colo. Federation Color Newsletter and had a HONORS award from Retired Senior Volunteers. She was a member of the Estes Park Internet Computer Users Group.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Her husband Ray of Estes Park and several cousins survive her.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Avenue, in Estes Park. Rev. Frank Johnke will officiate.

Helen R. Lasson
Helen R. Lasson, 87, died Feb. 12, 2004, at a Loveland nursing home.
Helen R. Dufty was born July 5, 1916, in Tingley, Iowa to Herbert and Julia C. (Ambrosier) Dufty. She graduated from Deaconess Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1937. She had a career as a private duty nurse.
She married Leon “Duke” Lasson on Feb. 3, 1940, in Marshalltown. She moved to Loveland in 1991 from Chiefland, Fla. While in Loveland, she was a member of the United Methodist Church and she enjoyed crafts, playing bingo and cards and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading.
Her husband preceded her in death in August of 1991. Sisters Florence Demling and Loretta Cheney and brother Horton Dufty also preceded her in death.
A son, Lee Lasson and his wife Sandy of Glen Haven and grandchildren Tony and Cassie Lasson of Glen Haven survive her.
A memorial service was held Feb. 16 in the Loveland Good Samaritan Village Chapel with pastor Wes Pixler officiating. Graveside services and interment are Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Chiefland Cemetery.

Jack Seybold
Jack Seybold, 86, of Estes Park died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Prospect Park Living Center.
John R. Seybold was born March 4, 1917, in Fort Morgan, Colo., to John R. Seybold, Sr. and Loua Steinmetz Seybold. At age three his family moved to Estes Park. He grew up in the Beaver Point area of town and graduated from Estes Park High School. He served in the United States Navy for four years during World War II and was stationed at Norfolk, Va. He was active in constructing the canyon roads and blasting and securing the walls on Highways 34 and 36. He married Jeanne Gray of Estes Park on Dec. 31, 1937. He owned the Texaco service station on Elkhorn Avenue for about 20 years. He especially enjoyed visiting with the young men who visited the station, which was next to the old high school. Some of those young men worked at the station and were guests in the Seybold home. The Estes Park Library is now located on the site of the station. Seybold then went to work at Rocky Mountain National Park and was maintenance director at Hidden Valley. During his earlier years, he was active in American Legion Post 119 and was a member of the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge. He was a volunteer fireman in Estes Park for 25 years. He loved Estes Park, the wildlife, and discovering Indian artifacts near his family’s home by Old Man Mountain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jeanne, a son James, granddaughter Marcie, and sister Eileen Rockwell.
His daughter Lynne Braun of Lancaster, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Dianne Seybold of Estes Park; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren survive him.
A graveside funeral took place at the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens on Feb. 17. Memorial contributions may be made to The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Avenue, Estes Park, CO 80517.

Erma Nell Crowley
Erma Nell Crowley, 90, died Feb. 4, 2004, in Mesa, Ariz.
Erma Crowley was born Oct. 16, 1913, on a farm near Lawson, Mo., to Charles and Effie (Mellon) Crowley. She was the fourth of seven children.
After high school, she moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she attended the McGregor School of Cosmetology. She worked as a beautician for several years in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and the Kansas City area before going to work in Tucson, Ariz., in 1944.
From there, she moved to Torrington and Casper, Wyo., and Johnstown, Colo., where she owned beauty salons. She moved to Estes Park in 1946 where she owned several salons, including For Beauty’s Sake. All told, Crowley had been a beautician for over 67 years. As a hairstylist, she devoted her life to creating beauty. She will be missed by her many friends and family.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel D. Trout and Leta P. McCullough, and one brother, Joseph W. Crowley.
She is survived by two sisters, E. Blanche Vermillion of Mesa, Ariz., and Dorothy Jean Collins of Tigard, Ore., a brother, J. Harold Crowley of Mesa; nieces, Joyce E. Crowley of Denver and Rebecca (Collins) Stacey of Round Rock, Texas; nephews Donald J. Crowley of Warren, R.I.; Ed McCullough of Excelsior Springs, David C. Vermillion of Mesa and Bruce Crowley of Estes Park.
Graveside services were held Feb. 10, at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens in Estes Park. Allnutt Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
Rebecca “Reba” Hull Estes
Rebecca “Reba” Hull Estes, 92, died Jan. 19, 2004, in Emeryville, Calif.
Rebecca Hull was born in Neck City, Mo., on Oct. 12, 1911. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Central State Teachers’ College in Edmond, Okla., and she taught in the Oklahoma City school system for 30 years.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma Education Sorority, and a past president of the Oklahoma Poetry Society. Her interest was teaching young children and instilling in them a love of learning.
She also loved nature, especially the mountains. She first came to Estes Park in 1946 as the summer director of the young children’s program at the YMCA of the Rockies. She fell in love with the area. The family has maintained a summer home in Estes Park for over 30 years.
Following her retirement from teaching in 1972, she enjoyed working at the Macdonald Book Shop where she was in charge of the children’s section.
Her husband of 72 years, Lloyd, preceded her in death in 2001. Her sister, Gail Crosby and brother Barton Hull also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Beverly Estes of Emeryville; a sister Ann Gross of Tulsa, Okla., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were Jan. 24, in Oklahoma City with interment in the Moore City Cemetery. A memorial service was held Feb. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, Calif. Memorial contributions may be made to the Estes Park Public Library Children’s Program or the Estes Park Medical Center Foundation.
Helen S. Connor
Helen S. Connor, 82, of Boulder, died May 8, 2004 in Boulder.
She was born March 15, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Elmer Elsworth Houck and Evelyn Bernice (Blackketter) Houck.
She married Densil (Denny) B. Connor on Aug. 21, 1947, in Denver.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Namaqua Chapter, Orient Chapter Eastern Star, and the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 41.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992 and her parents.
She is survived by daughters, Sharon S. Kirk (David) of Olympia, Wash., Kathleen J. Rettenberger (Fred) of Estes Park, and Lynell E Webster of Boulder; son, Dennis B Connor (Susan) of Broomfield; eight grandchildren; seven great-grand children; and sister, Jenne E. Newman of Redmond, Wash.
Services will be Thursday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the Crist Mortuary Chapel in Loveland. Interment will be in the Loveland Burial Park Cemetery.
Bertie Oleda Brown
Bertie Oleda Brown, 89, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Estes Park Medical Center with her family present. Bertie Oleda Brown was born September 25, 1914 in Stephenville, Texas to Virgil and Beulah (Long) Chambers. She married Donald Sheppard Brown on June 7, 1933. Bertie spent the majority of her life in California and moved to Estes Park in 1999. She worked in food service for 26 years for the Los Angeles School District. Bertie was a member of the Long Beach chapter of the Sweet Adelines International Barber Shop Chorus for 51 years and participated in international competitions. She was an avid supporter of the Estes Park High School band and choir and a member of the Rocky Mountain Evangelical Free Church. She also enjoyed traveling, cooking and spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Virgil and Beulah Chambers; husband Donald Sheppard Brown; her brother Winslow, and grandson Mark Brown. She is survived by her son, Donald Sheppard Brown, Jr. of Kooskia, ID; her daughter Judy Brown-Smith of Las Vegas, NV; granddaughter Lisa Way of Tacoma, WA; granddaughter Jenny Wells of Seattle, WA; grandsons Eric Rose of Estes Park and David Brown of Seattle, WA. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.

Dale Eugene Beach
Dale Eugene Beach, 65, of Estes Park died June 17, 2004 in Boulder. He is survived by his wife, “Rusty” Beach of Estes Park.
Robert Endsley Burgess
Robert E. Burgess, 77, of Estes Park, died July 3, 2004, at the Estes Park Medical Center after a three-year battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Dallas, Texas to William Ewell and Thelma (Porter) Burgess.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 8, at the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m.
