Lucy J. Ostrom
August 8, 1935 - November 10, 2003
AUSTIN - Longtime Delta County resident, Lucy J. Ostrom died Monday, November 10, 2003 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was 68.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 14th at Delta City Cemetery in Delta, Colorado. James Gall will officiate. A public visitation is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., November 14, 2003 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.
Lucy was born on August 8, 1935 to the late William and Zoda (Threat) Jordan in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She spent her childhood and attended school in Torrance, California.
On January 11, 1953 Lucy married the love of her life, Jay Dean Ostrom in Hollydale, California. In 1975, Lucy and Jay moved to Delta County from Torrance, California.
Mrs. Ostrom was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her family as well as playing Bingo.
Those grateful to have shared in Lucy’s life are her husband, Jay Ostrom of Austin, CO; five sons, Rick Ostrom and wife Veronica of Delta, CO; Alan Ostrom of Delta, CO; Dennis Ostrom of Cedaredge, CO; Danny Ostrom and wife Gaby of St. Paul, MN; Jason Ostrom and wife Kathy of Grand Junction, CO; three daughters, Debbie Tarrow and husband Tom of St. Paul, MN; Susan Tabares of Cedaredge, CO; Terry Hocking of Delta, CO; and one sister, Louise King of Glendale, CA. Lucy is further survived by seventeen grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, one son Marc Ostrom, and one granddaughter Jessica Nichole Ostrom.
Arrangements are under the care of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Charles T. Tennison
October 14, 1952 - November 8, 2003
PAONIA - Paonia resident, Charles T. Tennison died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at his residence. He was 51.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 2003 at the Assembly of God Church, 600 Oak Ave., Paonia. Services will conclude at the church.
Charles Thomas Tennison was born on October 14, 1952 in Douglas, Arizona, to William Ray and Mildred Rose (Frei) Tennison, Sr. He spent his childhood in Elfrida and Salome, Arizona, and he graduated from Kearny High School in Kearny, Arizona, in 1970. He continued his education at Coolidge Community College in Arizona. Charles moved to Paonia 10 years ago after residing in Arizona most of his life.
Charles, an avid sportsman enjoyed hunting and had attended the Assembly of God Church in Paonia.
Survivors include his father, Ray Tennison of Mesa, AZ; a sister, Jowanna James and husband Kenneth of Brazoria, TX; a brother, William R. Tennison, Jr. and wife Mary Kay of Somerset, CO; and a host of wonderful and loyal friends.

Ray V. Frost
September 16, 1908 - November 7, 2003
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Delta County resident, Ray V. Frost died Friday, November 7, 2003 at Horizon’s Care Center in Eckert, Colorado. He was 95.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 11th at the Community United Methodist Church in Cedaredge with Pastor Dale Lovett officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12th at Golden Cemetery in Golden, Colorado.
Ray V. Frost was born on September 16, 1908 near Dexter, New Mexico to the late Frank and Adaline (Alley) Frost. The family moved to Golden in 1919 when his brother James wanted to attend school at Colorado School Mines. Ray attended school in Dexter until the second grade and continued his education in Golden and graduated from Golden High School in 1926.
Ray began working for Adolph Coors Company on June 1, 1926 as a milk tester. He continued his education by going to the University of Denver at night and also Barnes Business School. He retired from Coors as Vice President of Finance in 1974, but remained as a Board of Director of another 5 years. Ray served in the U.S. Army during WWII were he was in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops.
Ray married Norma Jean Christian on June 9, 1968 in Carson City, NV. She survives. He was previously married to Doris Straight Volz.
Mr. Frost was a 55 year member of Kiwanis. He was also a member of the Delta Elks Lodge #1235, the American Red Cross, the Financial Executive Institute and Industries for Jefferson County. Ray loved photography, hiking, playing tennis and most of all skiing.
Survivors include his wife Norma J. Frost of Cedaredge, CO; a daughter, Christy Lynn Fischer of Lakewood, CO; a sister, Mary Moening of Golden; and one grandson, Gregory D. Fischer.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Frank Frost.
Taylor Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

LaDona Fay
October 6, 1931 - November 6, 2003
CEDAREDGE - Cedaredge resident, LaDona Fay died Thursday, November 6, 2003 at her residence. She was 72.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15th at the Delta City Cemetery in Delta, Colorado.
LaDona Fay was born to the late Charles William and Fern (Strawhecker) Pope on October 6, 1931 in Delta Colorado. Her mother Fern survives.
LaDona spent her childhood in Delta, Colorado and graduated from Delta High School in 1949.
On July 29, 1954 in Delta, Colorado LaDona married the love of her life, Harley A. Fay. In their earlier years of marriage they were residents of Ft. Huachuca, Arizona; Delta, CO; LaSalle, UT; Gateway and Naturita areas. They also lived in Creed, CO in 1968; and Montrose in 1978, Fruita in 1979, and Steamboat Springs in 1982 and finally residing in Cedaredge in 1997.
LaDona was a member of the Rebekahs Lodge in Creed; she was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader. LaDona and her husband owned the Ski Town Grocery Store in Steamboat Springs, CO; and Fay’s Restaurant and Recreational Center in Creed, CO; they also operated a Circle K store while living in Montrose, CO. Her hobbies included gardening, basketball, latch hook rug making, and her grandchildren. She was a Bronco fan as well.
Those grateful to have shared her life are her mother, Fern Denison of Eckert, CO; her son Earl Fay and his wife Kay of Grand Jct., CO; three daughters, Vicki Kolisch and her husband Richard of Creed, CO; Tammy Fay of Great Mills, Maryland; and Shauna Duran and husband Martin of Steamboat Springs, CO; one brother Charles Pope of Delta, CO; one sister Carole Ranck and her husband Cal of Milton, FL; and a sister in law, Penny Pratt of Delta, CO. LaDona is further survived by ten grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
LaDona was preceded in death by her husband Harley Fay and her father Charles.
Arrangements are under the care of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Emory C. Dawes
August 28, 1938 - November 5, 2003
PAONIA - Lifetime North Fork resident, Emory C. Dawes, died on Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at the Paonia Care and Rehab Center in Paonia, Colorado. He was 65.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 8, 2003, at the Friends Church in Paonia, Colorado. Pastor Jere Todd will officiate. Services will conclude at the church.
Emory C. Dawes was born on August 28, 1938, to Claude and Iona (Todd) Dawes in Paonia, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Paonia and graduated with the class of 1957 at Paonia High School.
Emory married Shelba Wood on August 10, 1960, in Naturita, Colorado. This marriage was later dissolved.
Mr. Dawes worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator. He belonged to the National Rifle Association. Among his many interests were hunting, fishing and fixing up old trucks. He was also an avid collector of old guns.
Survivors grateful to have shared in Emory’s life include two sons: Bobby Dawes and wife Sammie of Hotchkiss, CO, and Emory Todd Dawes of Nevada; two daughters: Angie Lopez and husband Louis of Paonia, CO, and Shawnda Gertner and husband Vince of Hudson, CO; two sisters: Polly and Janet of Denver, CO. He is further survived by thirteen grandchildren and one great - grandchild.
Emory was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Michael Dawes.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

William V. Smith
October 29, 1940 - October 27, 2003
CRAWFORD - William V. Smith died in Crawford, Colorado, on Monday, October 27, 2003, just two days before his 63rd birthday.
A gathering in honor of William’s life will be held on November 7, 2003, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Summit County Elks Lodge #2561.
William V. Smith was born on October 29, 1940, to David Elmer and Naomi (Reynolds) Smith in Brownsville, Texas. He spent his childhood in Miami Springs, Florida, and graduated from Hialeah Senior High School. He had been a resident of Summit County for the past 23 years.
William married Mary Barnett on August 8, 1988, in Cherry Creek, Colorado. She survives.
Mr. Smith owned and operated a lounge and restaurant called the Upstairs Lounge. He belonged to the BPOE # 2561 in Summit County. William was an avid golfer and enjoyed sports.
Those grateful to have shared in William’s life include his wife, Mary Carsten Smith of Silverthorne, CO; a son, Ty Smith of Florida; a daughter, Haley also of Florida; two sisters: Betty Jo Ogilvie of Melbourne, FL, and Kathy Deliere and her husband Bob of Islamogorda, FL. He is further survived by four nieces and seven grandnieces.
William was preceded in death by his parents and one niece.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.

Violet Rose Welt
January 11, 1929 - November 1, 2003
HOTCHKISS - Hotchkiss resident, Violet Rose Welt died Saturday, November 1, 2003 at St. Mary’s Medical center in Grand Junction, Colorado. She was 74.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 7th at the Paonia United Methodist Church. Pastor John Nadasi will preside. Services will conclude at the church.
Violet Rose Pearce was born on January 11, 1929 in Golden, Colorado to the late William John and Susie Gladys (Sparks) Pearce. She spent her childhood in Golden and graduated from Golden High School with the class of 1947. She continued her education at Barnes Business College in Lakewood, Colorado.
Violet married Donald Lee “Don” Welt on June 2, 1951 in Lakewood, Colorado. He survives. They moved to Hotchkiss in 1984, coming from Arvada, Colorado.
Violet was retired from the U.S. Forest Service where she had been an administrative assistant. She was a member of the Black Mesa Cattlewomen’s Association and the Music and Art Club. Gardening, fishing, traveling, camping, cooking and canning were among her interests. She also enjoyed helping out on the ranch. However, spending time with her grandchildren gave her utmost pleasure.
Survivors include her husband of over 52 years, Don Welt of Hotchkiss; two sons: Terry Welt and wife Kathleen and John Welt and wife Gloria, all of Hotchkiss; a niece, Lynn Wheatley of Westminster, CO; two brothers: Richard Pearce and wife Eileen of Sheridan, MT and Larry Pearce of Hotchkiss. Violet is further survived by three grandchildren, Camden Welt, Tory Welt and Evan Welt, all of Hotchkiss.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Pearce.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Black Mesa Cattlewomen’s Scholarship Fund, C/O Pauline Carr, 1105 3150 Ln., Hotchkiss, CO 81419.

Jose “Don” Lopez
May 24, 1936 - October 30, 2003
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Jose “Don” Lopez, died Thursday, October 30, 2003 at his residence. He was 67.
Rosary will be recited on Monday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m., at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta. Father Gerone Rykowski will preside. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 4th at the Church. Father Nathaneal Foshage, Father Gerone Rykowski and Father Mike Smith will officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with V.F.W. Post 1247 and Fr. Mike Smith officiating.
Jose Donaciano Lopez was born on May 24, 1936 in Rosa, New Mexico to Jose Manuel and Manuelita Mary (Gallegos) Lopez. He spent his childhood in Rosa, New Mexico and in Fruita, Colorado. He attended college at North Carolina State and Florida State.
Don was joined in marriage with Senovia “Sunny” Trujillo in December of 1962. The marriage was later dissolved. Don moved to Delta in 1975 after serving his country in the United States Army Special Forces. He was a former Sergeant for the Delta Police Department and former Undersheriff for the Delta County Sheriff’s Department. He then became the Chief of Police for Paonia. Don was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta and the Delta V.F.W. #3571.
Mr. Lopez enjoyed fishing, traveling, hiking in the mountains and photography. He was also well known for his talent in making stained glass, however, his devotion to his family was of most importance to him.
Survivors include his daughter, Tina Carpenter and her husband Leland of McHenry, IL; one son, Richard Lynn Lopez of Grand Junction, CO; three sisters, Faye Romero and Rose Atencio and husband Luis, all of Fruita, CO, and Trini Montoya of Denver, CO; three brothers, Paul Lopez and wife Judy of Grand Junction, CO, Julian Lopez and wife Judy of Fruita, CO and Jimmey Lopez and wife Patty of Colorado Springs, CO. Don is further survived by four grandchildren, Cheri Lopez, Michael Carpenter, Lisa Lopez and Matthew Carpenter. Numerous nieces and nephews
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Joe Lucero; and brother John Lopez .

Phillip P. Duarte
April 1, 1932 - October 19, 2003
DELTA - Delta resident, Phillip P. Duarte died Sunday, October 19, 2003 at his residence. He was 71.
A memorial service is planned for 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 24th at the Maranatha Fellowship Church, 1712 H Road in Delta. Pastor Earl Douglas will officiate. Services will conclude at the church.
Phillip Paul Duarte was born on April 1, 1932 in Redondo Beach, California to the late Juan and Angelita (Magana) Duarte. He spent his childhood and attended school in Redondo Beach.
Phillip married Lottie Hayes on February 25, 1968 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives. Prior to moving to Delta in 1995, they resided in Norwood for 17 years.
Mr. Duarte worked in the maintenance department for the Norwood School District for 14 years. When he moved to Delta he worked for the maintenance department for the City of Delta. He was a member of the Maranatha Fellowship Church in Delta. His interests included camping, fishing and traveling. However, his biggest joy was spending time with his beloved family.
Survivors include his wife of over 35 years, Lottie Duarte of Delta; two daughters: Antwinette Wilson and her husband Victor of Southern California, Theresa Foster and husband Ron of Carrollton, GA; one son, Alfred Wells and wife Charlotte of Delta; four brothers, Alfonso Duarte of Long Beach, CA, Joe Duarte and Emilio Duarte, both of San Diego, CA and Frank Duarte of Medford, OR; one sister, Victoria Duarte of Southern California. Phillip is further survived by fourteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one on the way.
Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Helen I. Andrade and ten brothers and sisters.
Arrangements are under the care of Taylor Funeral Services and Crematory.
