MITCHELL

A memorial service for Jack Keith Mitchell, 82, of Cheraw will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Cheraw United Methodist Church. He died Nov. 3, 2003.

Mr. Mitchell was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Coldwater, Kan. to Robert and Nellie Mitchell. He married Mildred McCormick on June 24, 1945, in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple had been residing with Mike and Kathy Westwood of Cheraw.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Diana (Ron) Gaston of Seattle, Wash., sons Robert (Betty) Mitchell of Moyock, N.C., Glenn (Kathleen) Mitchell of Amarillo, Texas, daughter-in-law Margie Baumgardner of Fresno, Calif., sisters-in-law Katherine (Mike) Westwood of Cheraw, Kathleen (Jerry) Bell of Cleveland, Okla., 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Johnson-Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DAVIDSON

A memorial service for Helen Reva Bloyd Davidson, 95 of La Junta and former Lamar area resident, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the First Baptist Church in La Junta. She died Sept. 29, 2003.

FLEMING

Services for Betty J. Fleming, 78, of La Junta will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Peacock Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be today until 7 p.m. at the Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home. She died Oct. 30, 2003.

Mrs. Fleming was born June 18, 1925 in Lamar to Sylvester and Viola (Miller) McGuin. She attended La Junta schools. She married James E. Hall in 1941 and they had three children. She married William P. Fleming on Oct. 27, 1960 in La Junta. She worked at the La Junta Safeway store for 35 and 1/2 years, retiring in 1985. She loved gardening, flowers, traveling and spending holidays with family.

She is survived by her daughters Marietta Coon of Westminster, Carolyn Steffani of Lamar, son Ron Hall of La Junta, sisters Gertrude Strain of Pueblo, Doris (Wayne) Hollis of La Junta, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Fleming was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a brother.

Memorial donations may be made to the Arkansas Valley Hospice Association, P.O. Box 1067, La Junta, CO 81050.

GUERRERO

Rosary for Juanita Guerrero, 84 of La Junta will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, with funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Both services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish. Committal will follow at the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Johnson-Romero Chapel, 921 Colorado. She died Oct. 30, 2003.

She enjoyed her pet birds and loved to cook. She was a very good listener. She never had any children of her own, but she was a mother to all. She raised her special nephew Gilbert Torrez from age one and she was considered his second mom.

Mrs. Guerrero is survived by her sister Mary Ramirez and two brothers, Nasario and Ernest Guerrero, all of La Junta.

She was preceded in death by her parents Tiburcio and Paula Guerrero, sister Rosie Torrez and brothers Isidrio, Ralph, Raul, Phillip and Juan Guerrero.

Johnson-Romero Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RIVALE

Memorial service for Alex Rivale, 55 and a lifetime resident of La Junta, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at the Peacock Memorial Chapel. He died Oct. 27, 2003.

Mr. Rivale was born Nov. 19, 1947 in Fallas Springs, Colo. to Joe Saviniano and Mary Madeline (Sanchez) Rivale. He had worked for many years for Cornelius Moving and Storage.

He is survived by his daughter Darla of Minnesota and her three children; sisters Grace Gomez of LaHabra, Calif., Virginia Plunkett of Greenwood, Ark. and Mary Gutierrez of Phoenix, Ariz., brothers Leroy Rivale of Alabama and Robert L. Rivale of Anaheim, Calif., as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

WICKHAM

Memorial services for Lois Illene Wickham, 83 of Emporia, Kan. will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at the Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery. She died Oct. 31, 2003.

Mrs. Wickham was born Lois Illene Santee on Sept. 1, 1920 in La Junta to Herbert and Laura Alice Gilchrist Santee. She was a member of the La Junta United Methodist church. She married Warren W. Wickham on Nov. 17, 1947 in Raton, N.M. He died Aug. 13, 1993. She had lived most of her life in La Junta, having moved to Emporia two years ago. She retired from the Colorado Bank and Trust Company as a bank teller.

She is survived by sons Kim (Sandy) Wickham of Emporia, Kan., Jon (Susie) Wickham of Houston, Texas, brother Robert (Audrey) Horton of Fort Collins, niece Terry Ross of Denver, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Dennis Isaacson in 1991, her parents, one sister and two brothers.

MESTAS

Rosary for Grace M. Mestas, 85, of La Junta will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 3 with funeral Mass to follow at 10 a.m. Both services are at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home. She died Oct. 30, 2003.

Mrs. Mestas was born Oct. 28, 1918 in Las Animas County to Mr. and Mrs. Felix Zamora. She grew up in the La Junta area. She married Dale Joseph Mestas on July 17, 1939. She worked for more than 20 years at Fort Lyon VA medical clinic. She enjoyed doing volunteer work at the VA day treatment center and at Fort Lyon. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish.

She is survived by sons Eugene (Maria) Mestas of La Junta, Frank (Georgia) Mestas of Pueblo and Eugene (Pat) Eddy of La Junta, whom she raised as a son. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arkansas Valley Regional Nursing Care Center West.

LOPEZ

Rosary for Juan Benito Lopez, 86, of Las Animas will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 with funeral Mass to follow at 10 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Las Animas with interment to follow in the Bent County Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at the Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home. He died Oct. 26, 2003.

Mr. Lopez was born April 3, 1917 in San Francisco, N.M. to Fernando and Juanita (Martinez) Lopez. He graduated from a Catholic high school in San Pedro, N.M. He married Carolyn Valdez on Oct. 31, 1945 in Espanola, N.M. He served as a medical corpsman from 1942 to 1945. He served with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, Guadalcanal, Kwajalein and Saipan. He was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, Purple Heart, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four battle stars. Toward the end of his service he was trained in Montana as a paratrooper and sky jumper and assigned the mission of jumping into forests of Washington, Oregon and Idaho to combat forest fires caused by incendiary balloons released in Japan and timed to explode and create forest fires in these areas. He came to the Las Animas area in 1946 and was present for duty when the 947th MedCo of the Army National Guard was formed. With the exception of a two year period, he served with this unit for 28 years and four months.

Mr. Lopez worked at the Fort Lyon VAMC from 1946 until retiring many years later. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and restoring old cars, which he did as a second job for Sharf Motor Company in the 1950s.

He is survived by his son John (Fran Salas) Lopez of Placentia, Calif., daughter Charlyn (Tony) Mascarenas of La Junta, grandchildren Anthony Walter (Suzette) Mascarenas, Barbara (Bob Biovannini) Mascarenas, Chris Jon Mascarenas, Mike (Lydia) Lopez, David (Jessica) Lopez, Erin (Chad) Crosby, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1967, parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Valley Hospice or the the Veterans group of choice.

MCDOWELL

Funeral services for Clifton M. "Joe" McDowell of Hasty are pending through Horber Funeral Chapel.

McDowell died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at Prowers Medical Center in Lamar.

HAZELWOOD

Charles E. Hazelwood, 54, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta. He was born Aug. 12, 1949 in La Junta to Loren R. and Hazel M. (Clark) Hazelwood.

He moved to Las Animas from La Junta in 1991. He was a leather worker. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Matthew Mark Hazelwood and Charles Loren Hazelwood, both of Las Animas; and seven sisters, Shirley Allard of Wisconsin, Lorna Hazelwood of Colorado Springs, Marian Welch of Tucson, Ariz., Barbara Brunson of El Mirage, Calif., Doris Merwin of Pueblo, Molly Lohse of Pueblo and Katy East of Clovis, N.M.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Travis McMillan officiating.

Horber Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

GRAHAM

A memorial service for Benjamin A. Graham, 63, of Fowler will be held at noon on Saturday at Ustick Donelson Johnson Funeral Home in Rocky Ford with the Rev. Rusty Butler officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Fort Collins.

Mr. Graham died Oct. 11, 2003, at his home in Fowler.

He was born Aug. 22, 1940, in Rocky Ford to Charles W. Graham and Pauline Tillotson Graham. He was a technician for Nor Tel Communications. He loved photography and electronics.

He is survived by his sons Dereck (Teresia) Graham of Colorado Springs, Jerry (Lee) Graham of Fort Collins, Ben (Kim) Graham of Greeley and David Graham with the U.S. Army, ten grandchildren, brother Bill Graham of Fowler and sister Carolyn Bryant of Grand Junction.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Paula Graham.

Ustick Donelson Johnson Funeral Home in Rocky Ford is in charge of arrangements.

MARTINEZ

Funeral Mass for Elegunda D. Martinez, 79, Fowler resident for the past 25 years, were held Saturday at the Mary, Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Fowler with the Rev. Paul Montez officiating. Burial followed in the Fowler Cemetery.

Mrs. Martinez died Oct. 21, 2003, at her home west of Fowler.

She was born April 29, 1924, in Durango, Mexico, to Francisco Quintero and Marellia Diaz Quintero.

She married Manuel Monarrez and later Pete Martinez.

She is survived by sons Jose Domingo Monarrez and Juan Contero Monarrez and daughters Maria (Harold) Lacey of Pueblo, Elva Flores of Pueblo and Paulina Farris of Milwaukee, Wisc., and 15 grand children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands and daughter Esperancia Garcia.

RISENHOOVER

A memorial service for Frances I. Risenhoover, 94, former resident of Manzanola, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel at Pioneer Nursing Center where she had been a resident for many years.

Mrs. Risenhoover died Oct. 13, 2003, at Pioneer Nursing Center in Rocky Ford. She was buried in Mountainview Cemetery in Manzanola.

She was born Dec. 15, 1908, in Wichita, Kan., to Walter F. and Florence A. Hough and was married to George Risenhoover in Hennessey, Okla., on June 30, 1929.

She is survived by sons Mel (Helen) Risenhoover of La Junta and Jack (Jeanette) Risenhoover of Cortez, daughters Florence Wilson of Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Jane (Jeff) Bryan of Pasadena, Texas, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons Walter and George and daughters Joan and Shirley.
