Glenn R. 'Fox' Taylor

Funeral services for Glenn R. "Fox" Taylor will be held on Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Elder Randy Taylor will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

Visitation is set for Wednesday afternoon at the Ertel Chapel between the hours of 2 and 6 p.m.

Fox was born to Ruben and Clara (Hudson) Taylor on January 29, 1904 in Berry County, Mo. He passed away on Jan. 19, 2001 at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez at the age of 96.

Fox was well-loved in the Cortez community. He was known as the "bicycle man" because he loved working on bikes for children. He worked for Montezuma County as an equipment operator, and lived in Cortez for over 84 years.

His children, Duane "Bud" Taylor of Cortez, and Donna Cook and her husband, Hugh of Grand Junction, Colo. survive him. Also surviving Fox are 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his spouse Evelyn (Blaine) Taylor in December, 1999; both of his parents; four brothers; four sisters; and one son, Glen Taylor.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Madison House, 120 S. Madison St. in Cortez.

Bruce Edward Medley

Funeral services for Bruce Edward Medley are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20, at the First Baptist Church of Dove Creek at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Dove Creek Cemetery.

Bruce was born to Jack and Ruby Mae (Toles) Medley on May 31, 1934, in Cedar Point, Utah. He passed away at his residence in Mesa, Ariz., on Jan. 15, 2001, at the age of 66.

Bruce worked for many years as a mechanic. He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his parents, Jack and Ruby Medley; his children, Renita Neely and Kevin Medley; two grandchildren, Robbie and Keith Neely; son-in-law, Bob Neely; brother Clinton (Charlene) Medley; sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Dennison and Carol (Dave) Martinez.

He is also survived by a very special friend and companion, Barbara Olsen. Six nieces and five nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews, will also mourn Bruce's passing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nerita Ann (Jordan) Medley, and by a daughter, Patricia Medley.

Abbie Jane Wagner

Memorial services for lifelong Mancos resident Abbie Jane Wagner will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 2:30 p.m. Father Jerry McKenzie will officiate.

Abbie Jane was born in Mancos on July 6, 1914, the daughter of George W. and Grace E. (Bauer) Exon. She passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Jan. 12, 2001, at the age of 86.

On Dec. 26, 1937, in Farmington, N.M., Abbie Jane became the bride of George Herman Wagner. She loved to play bridge, and was involved with the Episcopal Church, Eastern Star, P.E.O., and the VFW Auxiliary.

Abbie Jane is survived by her husband of 63 years, Herman, of Mancos; a son and his wife, Conrad and Ann Wagner of Woodland Park, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Kareen and Dick Valdez of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made with the Mancos Ambulance Fund. Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Wilson Nakai Begay

Funeral services for Wilson Nakai Begay are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 15, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Jack Nakai will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

Wilson Nakai Begay is the son of Ben Nakai and Lucille Tso Begay. He was born in Aneth, Utah on June 20, 1949. He passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2001 at his home in Shonto, Ariz. at the age of 51.

Wilson worked in the archaeology field as an archaeological excavator.

He is survived by a large family including his father, Ben Nakai Begay; his wife, Florence Ann (Blake) Begay; his children, Winifred Begay of Tucson, Ariz., Wilson Begay Jr. and his wife, Genevieve of Phoenix; Willis Begay and his wife, Aimee of Tucson; Waylon Begay of Tucson, and Wileen Begay of Tucson.; and two grandchildren.

Also surviving Wilson are his brothers and sisters, Marie Smith of Carson, N.M.; Sarah Slowman of Aneth; Virginia Etsitty of Aneth, Janell Salt of Aneth; Ellison Begay of Farmington, N.M.; Julia Nakai of Aneth; Roselyn Toledo of Cortez; Marietta Brown of Salt Lake City, Ut., and Richardson Begay of Cortez.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Tso Begay.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Scott 'Scotty' Glenn McEwen

Memorial services for Scott "Scotty" Glenn McEwen are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 15, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m.

Scotty was born to Ruben W. and Florence Helen (Fox) McEwen on July 16, 1953, in Cortez. He passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at his home in Cortez at the age of 47.

Scotty worked in the restaurant business as a chef.

He is survived by his mother, Florence McEwen of Cortez, and his daughter, Dawn Dorn and her husband, David of Abilene, Texas. Two grandsons survive him: Dexter and Dylan Dorn also of Abilene. He is also survived by brothers, John Wesley McEwen of Dolores and Edward Ruben McEwen of Tucson, Ariz.; and sisters, Coline Lovett of Cortez, and Melonee Marie McEwen of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Memorial contributions can be made in Scotty McEwen's name with the Dolores State Bank. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Maxine Wilson

Maxine Wilson, a lifetime resident of Newcomb, N.M., passed away Jan. 10, 2001 at the age of 85. Services will be held Jan. 13, at 10:15 a.m. in the Newcomb Christian Reform Church. Interment will follow at Tehali Cemetery, Toadlena, N.M.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

Jeffrey A. Akins

Services for Jeffrey A. Akins of Durango will be held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Durango Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Jim Cooper will officiate.

Interment will follow at Greenmount Cemetery, with visitation to be held today, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Akins was born June 29, 1955, to George and Ruth Akins. He passed away Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 in Durango at the age of 45.

He is survived by his wife, Nina of Durango; mother, Ruth of Durango; daughters, Theresa Akins of Farmington, N.M.; Stephanie Akins, also of Farmington, MaKenna and Alayna Akins of Durango, and by his brother, Mike Akins of Garner, N.C.

His father, George Akins, preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to the LDS Humanitarian Fund, care of Bishop Jim Cooper, 2603 N. College Drive, Durango, Colo. 81301.

Betty Jean Forest

Funeral services for Betty Jean Forest of Dolores, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at the Cortez Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Ertel Chapel Tuesday afternoon between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m.

Betty Jean was born on April 27, 1926, in Cortez to Yuell Franklin Greenlee and Eula Marie (Basket) Greenlee. She passed away at the Golden Years Retirement Home in Dolores on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001. She was 74.

Surviving Betty Jean is her mother, Eula Marie Greenlee of Dolores; her daughter, Donna Jean Conoley of Strawberry, Ariz.; two grandchildren and their spouses; a sister and her husband, and one brother.

Memorial contributions can be made in Betty Jean Forest's name with the American Heart Association.

Warren Locket Pyle

Services are pending for Warren Locket Pyle, who passed away in Globe, Ariz., on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the age of 84. He was born on Aug. 31, 1916, in Dolores.

Warren is survived by his wife of 64 years, Charlotte (Chadwick) Pyle; and his three children, Frank, Donna, and Myrna. An infant son, Lou Ray Pyle preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Warren Pyle at the Citizens State Bank of Cortez to benefit the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.

Charles A. Hampton

Funeral services for Charles A. Hampton are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. Gary Stephens and Newell Hampton will officiate. Interment will follow at the Arriola Cemetery.

Charles was born in Beulah, Colo., on May 8, 1915, to Bascum and Mary (Stuckman) Hampton. He passed away on Jan. 7, 2001, at his home in Dolores at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Irene of Dolores; children, Bobby (Marissa) Hampton of Odessa, Texas; Pat (Ray) McDonald, of Gem Village, Colo.; Scott (Dorothy) Decker of Dodge City, Kan.; Sandie(Robert) Randol of Farmington, N.M.; Sammy (Roseanna) Decker of Pueblo, Colo.; Steve (Rejeania) Decker of Arriola;13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild and extended family.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; a son, Oscar R. Stuckman; brothers, Herman, Byron and Harold Hampton; and his sister, Eva Fair.

Memorial contributions can be made with the Montezuma County Hospice at 1108 N. Mildred Rd., Cortez.

Henrietta Wilma Peel

Funeral services for lifelong Dove Creek resident Henrietta Wilma Peel will be held Friday, Jan. 12, at the Dove Creek First Southern Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel from 1 to 5 p.m.

Henrietta was born to Manford and Myrtle Alfa (Parker) Weese on Feb. 5, 1912, in Gentryville, Mo. She passed away at Mesa View Retirement Home in Cortez on Jan. 7, 2001. She was 88.

In Dove Creek on July 21, 1929, Henrietta wed Frank Olaf Peel. They shared 51 years of marriage before Frank's death in 1981. Henrietta was a lifelong member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Dove Creek. She loved to crochet and embroider.

She is survived by four daughters, Betty Jean and Junior Hollen of Pleasant View, Darlene Moore of Dove Creek, Chloe Ann and Arvell Lamb of Pleasant View, and Frankie Joanne and Mike Coker of Dove Creek; her sister, Marie Hemphill of Caņon City; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

James Winthrop Hartley

Military graveside services for James Winthrop Hartley, a longtime Cortez resident, are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m.

Jim was born to Alexander Smith Hartley and Marie Elizabeth (Abbott) Hartley on June 24, 1927 in Los Angeles, Calif. He passed away on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez at the age of 73.

Jim served this area as a probation officer for the Ute Mountain Tribe. He was a charter member of the Elks. Jim married Ingrid Johnson in July of 1948. To this union were born three daughters, Virginia, Justin, and Heidi.

He is survived by his three daughters, Virginia H. Jordan and her husband, Ralph of Beaumont, Tex., Justin V. Loerwald and her husband, Charles of Littleton, Colo., and Heidi Ann Hartley of Newmarket, N.H. Jim is also survived by his ex-wife, Ingrid Hartley of Cortez; two granddaughters, Carey Hetherington and her husband, Thomas of Houston, Tex. and Andrea Loerwald of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one great granddaughter, Blake Hartley Hetherington.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother, Albert Hartley.

Memorial contributions can be made in Jim Hartley's name to the American Diabetes Association at 2480 W. 26th Ave. Suite 120-B, Denver, Colo. 80211.

Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Robert Lincoln Crites

Robert Lincoln Crites of Dolores passed away Jan. 1, 2001, at Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 78.

Born in Marlin, Texas, Feb. 18, 1922, he served in the Marine Corps during World War II on the USS New Orleans. He married Elizabeth Hackett on Aug. 9, 1945.

He is survived by his son, Dave Crites, of Dolores; his daughter, Sharon Saunders, of Clifton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; his daughter, Rhonda, and his son, Robert Jr. Graveside services will be held in Mesa, Colo.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken Funeral Directors, are serving the family.

Agnes P. Seeman

Funeral services for Agnes P. Seeman are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8, at the Trinity Lutheran Church beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Pastor David Dahl will be officiating. Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Monday, Jan. 8, between 10 a.m. and noon.

Agnes was born to August and Augusta (Benker) Bangert on January 12, 1912 in Guide Rock, Neb. She passed away on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home at the age of 88.

Agnes worked for many years in the motel industry as a housekeeper. She was a faithful charter member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, Verna Lard and her husband, Ben of Cortez, and Neoma Rohde and her husband, Gerald of Grand Junction, Colo. She leaves behind six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving Agnes are two sisters, Hilda Alber and Donelda Hartman both of Blue Hill, Neb.; her brother, Clarence Bangert of Lincoln, Neb.; her sister-in-law, Minnie Seeman of Blue Hill, Neb. There are numerous nieces and nephews that will mourn the loss of their aunt.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, Ernest Ulrich Seeman, who passed away in 1971; and one grandson, Larry Rohde.

Memorial contributions can be made in Agnes Seeman's name to the Trinity Lutheran Church located at 208 N. Dolores Rd. in Cortez, Colo. 81321. Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Glen Edward Chapman

Glen Edward Chapman, 69, of Cortez passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 4, 2001. No services are planned at this time.

Glen was born in Mangum, Okla. on July 26, 1931, the son of Samuel (S.J.) and Lena Chapman. On June 14, 1955 he wed Betty Daniel in Plains, Texas.

His family is left behind to mourn his passing, including his wife of 45 years, Betty Chapman of Cortez; two sons, Perry Chapman and his wife, Judy, and Doug Chapman, all of Odessa, Texas; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; a brother, Jim of Mangum, Okla.; and two sisters, Patty and Betty Ann, also of Mangum, Okla.

Memorial contributions can be made in Glen Chapman's name either with the American Cancer Society of the American Heart Association. Arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Beuna Mae Burris

Funeral services for Beuna Mae Burris will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Evans Funeral Home in Houston, Mo., at 1 p.m. Pastor Eugene Earp will officiate. Interment will follow at the Ellis Prairie Cemetery in Houston.

There will be a viewing at the Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez on Thursday, Jan. 4, between 2 and 5 p.m.

Beuna Mae Burris was born to William Thomas and Missouri Adaline (Walker) Hill in Marshfield, Mo., on Dec. 18, 1908. She passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos, at the age of 92.

Beuna Mae was wed to John Burris in February 1930 in Houston, Mo. John passed away in May 1982. Beuna loved to quilt, garden and raise flowers. She was a faithful member of the First Southern Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Johnney (Cretia) Burris of Cortez; grandchildren, Joseph Franklin (Myra) Burris of Cortez; Johnney Wayne (Ginny) Burris, also of Cortez, and Donna Marie (Rick) Weems of Corinth, Texas. Also surviving her are her 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She leaves behind one sister, Hazel Merritt, of Dewey, Okla., as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved spouse, three sisters and three brothers.

Local arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.
