Edwena Wilkins Cary
January 13, 1908 - December 30, 2002

Edwena Wilkins Cary was born Jan. 13, 1908, on her grandparent’s ranch near Hayden, Colo., to Earle and Laura Dawson Wilkins.
She grew up on the Dawson ranch, where her family raised cattle and also kept buffalo and elk. She liked playing outdoors and in the barn. When she was young, she and her brother would hitch a goat to a wagon for rides, and when she was older, she rode her horse, Mac. She spent much time at a swimming hole on the river with her brothers and cousins and sometimes would build a fire on the sand to roast birds the boys had shot. The ranch and buildings are preserved by The Nature Conservancy.
The winters were sometimes spent in Denver or Los Angeles, but she was graduated from Hayden High School. She attended Colorado University, where she fell in love with Wilson Cary, also from a large Hayden ranching family. They were married in 1929 and moved to a high mountain ranch on the East Fork of the Williams River south of Hayden.
They raised two sons at their ranch. Edwena taught at the one room schoolhouse in the neighborhood. She enjoyed studying botany in college and kept vegetable, flower and rock gardens at the ranch, often experimenting with growing the wildflowers in the region.
She and Wilson stocked a small lake with fish for those too young or old to fish the river. She liked to lay on the pier and watch fish swim underneath. She talked all her life of the fun she had on horseback camping trips with her husband and sons.
Although there was no electricity at the ranch, she had a formal family dinner each day with china and silver and service from the head of the table. She enjoyed nice things and believed they were meant to be used.
She liked fine needlework since she participated in the sewing classes her grandmother led for her cousins, and she made and designed many rugs, wall hangings and chair seats
She later taught fifth grade in Meeker, after finishing her bachelor’s degree mostly by correspondence course.
When her sons were grown, she and her husband moved to Modesto, Calif., She liked to be able to swim often there, attended the Presbyterian church and continued to teach.
Her former students talk about her ability to make each feel they were special. She had a warm and gracious manner that made her well-liked by children and adults.
With her husbands health failing she moved to Richland, Wash., in 1988 to be near her son John and his family. She cared for Wilson at home. They were married for 64 years and the marriage brought both of them joy.
After his death she enjoyed visiting the ranch again with her great-grandchildren.
She moved to Hawthorne Court in Kennewick, Wash., in her late 80s and became a board member of United Blind when she lost much of her sight. She received good care in the last three years at the Arbors Cottage in Pasco, Wash.
She died Dec. 30, 2002, at the Arbors at the age of 94. She had a good long life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson; son John; and brothers Charles and Ralph.
She is survived by her son Earle and his wife Patricia, of Brooktondale, N.Y. and a daughter-in-law, Mary Cary of Richland.
Grandchildren are Lisa Dally and her husband, Paul, of Vancouver, Wash.; Annette Cary of Richland; Cheryl O’Brien and her husband, Barry, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Russ Cary of Oakhurst, Calif.; Randi Cary and his wife Jan, of Ithaca, NY.; Mikel Cary and his wife Susan, of Ithaca, NY.; and Brett Cary of Brooktondale, NY.
