Catherine M. Krotz

First Priority Her Family

Nov. 25, 1926 Dec. 30, 1998

MONTROSE - Catherine M. Krotz, age 72, a homemaker and resident of Montrose since 1996, died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in her Montrose home.

Catherine M. Hyland, the daughter of James Joseph and Mary Josephine (Henry) Hyland, was born on Nov. 25, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio., where she spent her childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood. After graduating from high school, Miss Hyland worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell.

On Nov. 8, 1947, Miss Hyland married Richard Francis Krotz in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. The couple were blessed with six children and were privileged to celebrate their 51st wedding anniversary this year in November.

After the couple established their home,in Cleveland, Mrs. Krotz was a homemaker and caring for her family was her first and foremost interest. Mr. Krotz ran a sheet metal fabrication business and was later an expert philatelist (stamp collector) and coin collector and dealer, traveling all over the United States.

Mrs. Krotz was active and interested in being helpful to others and for a number of years, while living in Cleveland, she was the volunteer driver for the nuns and priests who served her parish church, St. Philomena's, where she was a member.

Following the couple's retirement in 1980, they moved with their daughter, Ginny, to North Carolina and later to Florida in 1992, before coming to Montrose to be near their daughters in 1996.

Mr. Krotz preceded his wife in death on Aug. 5, 1997, in Montrose. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Krotz continued to make her home in Montrose until the time of her own death.

She loved to socialize, was gracious, outgoing, and loved to spend time with others. She enjoyed flowers, and Broadway musicals, but the main love and delight of her life was her family.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Krotz's life include two sons: Philip E. Krotz, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; Michael P. Krotz and wife Bonnie, of Mantua, Ohio; and three daughters: Fran and husband Pat Nonnan; Gerry Krotz, all of Montrose; Cecilia and husband Wayne Babb, of Sardis, Tenn.

She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Melissa Rouzer, Kevin Rouzer, Kerri and Lauren Noonan, all of Montrose; Erik and Daniel Krotz, of Mantua, Ohio; and Andrea and Elisa Babb, of Tennessee.

Other family survivors include one sister, Peg Hunt; and one sister-in-law, Marquerite Hyland, both of Cleveland, Ohio.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Krotz was also preceded in death by one daughter, Ginny Krotz; two brothers: Jack Hyland and Tom Hyland; and one sister, Ann Michaels.

A gathering in Tribute and Remembrance of Mrs. Krotz's life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Montrose Pavilion.

Cremation has taken place, with arrangements handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral home.

Bobby Dean Holman

Former Montrose Resident

Sept. 18, 1929 Dec. 26, 1998

FALCON COVE, Ore. - Former Montrose resident, Bobby Dean Holman, age 69, died on Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Falcon Cove, Ore., where he had been a resident since 1990.

Bobby Dean Holman was born on a farm in Dade County, Mo., on Sept. 18, 1929, the son of Thomas and Edna (Kirby) Holman. He spent his childhood and received his education in Montrose and Reno, Nev. After completing high school, he continued to pursue his education at a college in Reno, Nev.

Mr. Holman was employed as office manager with New York Life Insurance Company and was responsible for various offices throughout the western states until his retirement in 1988.

Mr. Holman moved to Falcon Cove, Ore., in November of 1990 where he made his home until the time of his death.

On July 4, 1991, he married Denise Folgner in Arch Cape, Ore.

Mr. Holman loved and enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Rainland Fly Casters Group in Astoria, Ore.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Holman's life include his wife of seven years, Denise Holman, of Falcon Cove, Ore.; one son, Ronald Holman; and one grandson, Zachary Holman, both of Visalia, Calif.; and three stepchildren.

Other family survivors include Mr. Holman's twin sister, Betty Jean Guio, of Reno, Nev.; and two cousins: Virginia Huss, of Arch Cape, Ore.; and Geraldine King, of Strathmore, Calif.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mr. Holman's life were officiated on Tueday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. from the Hughes-Ransom Chapel in Seaside, Ore.

Arrangements were handled under the direction of Hughes-Ransom Mortuary of Seaside, Ore.

Wilhamein B. Hockaday

Wife, Mother, Grandmother

Feb. 11, 1912 Jan. 2, 1999

DELTA - Wilhamein B. Hockaday, age 86, a homemaker and resident of Delta for 40 years, died on Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at her Delta home.

Born on Feb. 11, 1912, in Alliance, Neb., Wilhamein B. Armstrong was the daughter of James Albert and Mary (Popp) Armstrong. She spent her childhood in Blue Hill, Neb. and Alamosa, Colo., graduating from the Alamosa High School. She continued to pursue her education at Adams State College in Alamosa.

Miss Armstrong was married in May of 1930 in Taos, N.M., to Fred H. Hockaday, who preceded her in death on April 23, 1965, in Delta.

She lived in Longmont; West Plains, Mo.; and Montrose prior to moving to Delta in June of 1958 where she made her home until the time of her death.

Mrs. Hockaday, a homemaker, also worked at the Delta Sales Yard and High Quality Produce.

Mrs. Hockaday was a 50-plus year member of Rebekah Lodge No. 65, was a member and served as an officer of the Mountain View Community Club, and was a volunteer for Retired and Senior Volunteer Program at the Senior Center until the time of her death.

She especially enjoyed crocheting and was known for baking the best lemon meringue and raisin pies.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Hockaday's life include four sons: Roy Dean Hockaday, of Mannford, Okla.; Wayne Hockaday and wife Tammie, of Thermopoulis, Wyo.; Gary Hockaday and wife Arlys, of Longmont; Vaughn Hockaday and wife Lydia, of Hayden; one daughter, Janet and husband Ken Wilson, of Olathe; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include two sisters: Letha Crouch, of Lakewood; and Leva Clark, of Palmdale, Calif.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hockaday was also preceded in death by two brothers: Wayne Armstrong and Borden Armstrong; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 5, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Delta Taylor Funeral Service.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Hockaday's life will be officiated by family members on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. from the Delta Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.

Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

Paul Eugene Gilchrist

World War II Veteran

March 29, 1924 Jan. 2, 1999

MONTROSE - Paul E. Gilchrist, age 74, a resident of Montrose since 1992, died Saturday evening in Integrated Health Services at Delta.

Paul Eugene Gilchrist was born in Superior, Neb., on March 29, 1924, the son of Andrew and Veda (Elliott) Gilchrist, He spent his youth in Superior, Neb.

In 1943, after graduating from high school, Mr. Gilchrist joined the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He was first stationed in Okinawa and then in Japan, where he took his discharge. He then accepted a Civil Service job.

While working in Japan, Mr. Gilchrist met and married his wife, Margaret McClintic of California, on April 9, 1948. The couple returned to Superior in December of 1948, where Mr. Gilchrist helped his father farm for five years.

After his father's death in 1954, Mr. Gilchrist moved his family, which now included a daughter, Patricia Jo, to Durango. In 1965 the family moved to Georgetown where they made their home for 27 years.

Mr. Gilchrist was employed by the Colorado Department of Transportation and retired as a Senior Tunnel Supervisor from the Eisenhower Tunnel after 23 years.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Gilchrist's life include his wife of 50 years, Margaret Gilchrist, of Montrose; one daughter, Patricia and husband Chancy Clark, of Montrose; and two grandchildren: Sean Clark, of Durango; and Jaime Clark, of Grand Junction.

Other family survivors include one sister, Virginia Ann Gault, of California; and four nephews.

Mr. Gilchrist was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Veda Gilchrist; one brother, Robert Gilchrist; and two sisters: Janet Edick and Beth Morris.

At Mr. Gilchrist's request there will be no memorial service. The cremains will be inurned at a later date in Superior, Neb.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Edward F. "Bus" Frey

Retired Road Supervisor

April 10, 1913 Jan. 3, 1999

MONTROSE - Edward F. "Bus" Frey, age 85, a resident of Montrose since 1990, died of a sudden illness on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at his home in Montrose.

Edward F. Frey, the son of Charles and Lillie (Collins) Frey, was born on April 10, 1913, in Maher, Colo. He spent his childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Crawford.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Frey remained in the area working in agriculture and eventually went to work for the Montrose County Road Department in the Maher area. He then was employed with the Delta County Road Department and became the Road Maintenance Supervisor for Delta County, retiring from his supervisor position in 1978.

Mr. Frey married Hazel Irene Hawkins on Dec. 16, 1935, in Delta, Colo. The couple were blessed with four children.

In 1990, the Freys moved to Montrose to be near their family where Mr. Frey made his home until the time of his death. Mrs. Frey preceded her husband in death on July 4, 1993, in Montrose.

Mr. Frey especially enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his spare time hunting and fishing in the North Fork Valley. He had a habit of always carrying candy with him and passing it out to family and children of friends and neighbors. The pride of Mr. Frey's life was his family. He stayed interested in the life of the family and his many grandchildren regardless of where they lived or how distant their homes.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mr. Frey's life include two sons: Don Frey and wife Sharon, of Montrose; Chuck Frey and wife Sally, of Fruita; and one daughter, Sue and husband Larry Eilts, of Montrose.

He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Donna Peterson, of Montrose; Bobbi Carter, of Carrollton, Texas; Bonnie Steely, of Montrose; Billie Frey, of Ordway; Craig Doss, of Springfield, Mo.; Erika Doss, of Woodland Hills, Calif.; Deborah Gardner, of Nevada; Ronnie Christian, of Aspen; Randy Christian, of Kansas; and the great-grandfather of 20 great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Keith "Bud" Frey, of Denver; and three sisters: Gene Frey, of Grand Junction; Sally Gray, of Eckert; and Charlene Fuller, of Delta.

In addition to his parents and wife, Hazel, Mr. Frey was also preceded in death by three brothers: Rodney "Jack" Frey, Charles Frey, Homer Frey; one sister, Marie Parks; and one daughter, Shirley Ann Christian, who died in 1975.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Funeral Services in remembrance, to pay respects, and to honor Mr. Frey's life will be officiated by The Rev. Don Ford on Friday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. from the Methodist Church in Crawford.

Interment will follow the service in Crawford, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Wilma Ruth Flanigan

Retired Bookkeeper

Dec. 31, 1918 Jan. 5, 1999

MONTROSE - Wilma Ruth Flanigan, age 80, a retired bookkeeper and a lifelong Montrose resident, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 5, 1999, in her home at Montrose.

Wilma Ruth Flowers, the daughter of Lee Ander and Myrtle Mae (Orr) Flowers, was born on Dec. 31, 1918, in Montrose, Colo., where she spent her childhood, graduated from the Montrose County High School with the class of 1936, grew to adulthood, and made her home until the time of her death.

Miss Flowers married Fred Flanigan on Jan. 19, 1941, in Moab, Utah. The couple were blessed with two daughters and were privileged to share 57 years of marriage.

Mrs. Flanigan was a 50-year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

During her lifetime, Mrs. Flanigan had several special interests, including: Antiques, handiwork, knitting, crocheting, and fishing. She enjoyed her work as a bookkeeper very much, but the main focus, love, and joy of her life was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Flanigan's life include her husband, Fred Flanigan; and two daughters: Bonnie Andrew ,and Judy and husband Rodney Martin, all of Montrose.

She was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren: Marchelle and John Webb, of Grand Junction; Gina and Kim DeVincentis Hussong; Shane Deines; Kevin and Kristi DeVincentis, all of Montrose; great-grandmother of nine great-grandchildren: Zerah and Nesha Webb; Saige, Kira and Seth Hussong; Kameron and Kalli DeVincentis; Kayla and Colin Adair; and three stepgrandchildren: Ralph Martin, of Montrose; Rachele Adair, of Dallas, Texas; and Heather Martin, of San Dimas, Calif.

Other family survivors include two sisters: Thelma Lundsford, of Montrose; and Alice Leonardi, of Rifle.

Mrs. Flanigan was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral Services in remembrance, to pay respects, and to honor Mrs. Flanigan's life will be officiated by Pastor Bryon Yeager on Friday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church on Niagara in Montrose.

Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral home of Montrose.

Arvella Christene Alban

Enjoyed Playing The Piano

Sept. 3, 1908 Jan. 5, 1999

DELTA - Arvella Christene Alban, age 90, of Delta, died on Tuesday, Jan. 5. 1999, in Integrated Health Services at Delta.

Arvella Christene Randall was born near Soldier in Jackson County, Kan., on Sept. 3, 1908, the daughter of George and Madelon (Sholty) Randall.

On March 16, 1925, Miss Randall married L. L. Alban in Holton, Kan. The couple were blessed with three children and were privileged to celebrate 73 years of marriage last year in March.

The Albans lived in Kansas until 1947 when they moved to Leadville where they remained until 1960. After 1960 the Albans spent their summers in Leadville and lived in Arizona.

Mrs. Alban, a homemaker, helped her husband run the Continental Bus Stop in Leadville for many years. She also managed the two Mile High Apartments in Leadville.

She was a member of the Christian Church of Soldier, Kan. While she lived in Kansas, Mrs. Alban enjoyed playing the piano for church and school plays.

Survivors grateful to have shared Mrs. Alban's life include her husband, L. L. Alban, of Delta; one daughter, Natalie Yeakel, of Grand Junction; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Alban was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one daughter, and one son.

Private Family Services in remembrance and to honor Mrs. Alban's life will be held.

Cremation will precede the service, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.
