Jesse L. Steele
Retired Farmer and Rancher
Nov. 12, 1910 - March 4, 1999
MONTROSE - A resident of Montrose for approximately six years, Jesse L. Steele, age 88, a retired farmer and rancher, died Thursday morning, March 4, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Jesse L. Steele, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Tryphena (Willden) Steele, was born at Red Mesa, Colo., where he spent his childhood and received his education.
At the age of 17, Jesse moved from Red Mesa to Paradox where he resided until approximately six years ago when he moved to Montrose. He made his home in Montrose until the time of his death.
Jesse married Iona McGee on June 25, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Iona preceded Jesse in death on July 30, 1989, in Montrose.
On Dec. 22, 1989, Jesse married Barbara (Rucker) Rooks in Paradox, Colo.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053.
Special interests Jesse found pleasure in during his lifetime were fishing, lion hunting, bowling, rock hunting, and baseball.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rooks, of Montrose; four sons: Ron Steele and wife Liz, of Paradox; Lloyd Steele and wife Laurel, of Simi, Calif.; Jim Rooks; Bill Rooks and wife Cleo, all of Grand Junction; and three daughters: Lynda and husband Benton Ayers, of Paradox; Jean and husband Reed Hayes, of Provo, Utah; and Ann and husband Gary Epstein, of Fort Collins.
Jesse was the proud grandfather of 33 grandchildren; and the great-grandfather of 48 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Lucy Broadhurst, of Redmond, Ore.; and Mabel and husband Cliff Hiett, of Delta.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Iona, Jesse was also preceded in death by one son, Jack Steele.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Jesse's life will be conducted by Bill Whitcomb on Monday, March 8, at 10 a.m. from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Montrose.
Interment will immediately follow the service in the Paradox Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Phebe Anne Youngman
Loved the Outdoors and Cooking
Dec. 2, 1908 - March 5, 1999
MONTROSE - Phebe Anne Youngman, age 90, a homemaker and resident of Montrose for approximately six years, died Friday morning, March 5, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.
Phebe Anne Faris, the daughter of Clyde and Phebe (Longwell) Faris, was born on Dec. 2, 1908, in Denver, Colo. She spent her childhood on the Eastern Slope of Colorado and graduated from high school in Florence, Colo., where she grew to adulthood.
On Nov. 5, 1927, Phebe married Frank Youngman in Florence, Colo. This union was blessed with three sons and one daughter. Phebe and Frank had the privilege of celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary last year in November.
The Youngmans lived in Grand Valley, Colo., for seven and a half years before moving to Montrose approximately six years ago where Phebe, a homemaker, made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, TOPS of Montrose, and served as a past member of the Women's Cowbells.
Phebe loved the outdoors, riding horses, fishing, gardening, and cooking was an excellent cook.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Youngman; one son, Clyde Youngman and wife Tammy, all of Montrose; one daughter, Phebe and husband Donald Gibbs, of Perry, Ga.; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Phebe was preceded in death by two sons: Frank Allen and Edwin Lloyd Youngman; her parents; and numerous brothers and sisters.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Phebe's life will be officiated by Minister Tim Smith on Thursday, March 11, at 10 a.m. from the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery
in Grand Junction, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.
Debby Snyder
Had A Remarkable Spirit
Nov. 30, 1949 - March 5, 1999
NORWOOD - Debby Snyder, age 49, a longtime Wright's Mesa resident, died at her home near Norwood on Friday, March 5, 1999, following a hard fought battle with cancer. She may have lost the fight but like everything else she ever did, she never gave up and demonstrated her remarkable spirit right to the end.
Debby Bunker was born on Nov. 30, 1949, in Austin, Texas to Lou Little Bunker and Cecil Bunker. The Bunkers moved to Naturita in 1951, to Nucla in 1953 and then to Wright's Mesa in 1967. Debby graduated from the Norwood High School in 1968. She left the next fall to attend UNC in Greeley, graduating in 1972 with a teaching degree. She then returned to her family and friends on Wright's Mesa. She did her student teaching in Nucla and later taught fourth grade.
Debby married Monte Snyder on June 4, 1977. Monte and Debby built their home and raised their family from a vantagepoint overlooking Wright's Mesa, the Uncompahgre Plateau and the mountains Debby loved so much.
Debby believed strongly in the values of the traditional ranching family in which she lived her life. Hard work, respect and concern for the land and animals and the love and constant presence of family were the important elements of her life. She shared her life and love with those closest to her, husband Monte, son Lothan, daughter Laura, and her mother Lou, as well as the extended families of the Bunkers and Snyders.
She took great pride in the many accomplishments of her children. In addition to her family, Debby was surrounded by friends, some she had known most of her life and others of much shorter duration. She is fondly remembered for her sense of humor, quick wit, sensitivity, support of family and children, and her ability to cut through to the core of an issue.
Debby was first and foremost a loving wife, devoted mother and special daughter. She was a valued sister and supportive friend. She was a wonderful and talented artist and an exuberant rodeo and high school sports fan. She thoroughly enjoyed her work with the children and teenagers of the Norwood School where she worked for many years as a substitute teacher and volunteered for countless projects. She was an advocate of children and animals and a lover of beautiful places.
In addition to her work in the school, she worked at the San Miguel Veterinary Clinic and was, for a time, the secretary for the San Miguel Basin Soil Conservation District. She was a member of the Roping Club, a founder of the local high school Rodeo Club, and a 20-year member of the ladies bridge club.
In the last weeks of her life, Debby was continually surrounded by family and friends, each bent on showing her how special she was to each of them. They encircled her with their love, shared stores of times gone by and eased her pain in every way they could. In turn, even as her life slipped away, she continued to give those who loved her moments to remember and glimpses of the special person she was.
In addition to Monte, Lothan, Laura, and Lou, she is survived by sisters, Linda and Robbie Bunker; and a brother, Jerry Bunker and wife Laura. She is also survived by, and greatly missed by her many relatives and her countless friends.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Bunker; and a stepfather, Jack Nunley.
Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at the Norwood School.
Interment will follow the service in the Norwood Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Ruth Lindley
Eckert/Cedaredge Homemaker
March 13, 1911 - March 6, 1999
ECKERT - Ruth Lindley, age 87, a homemaker and resident of the Eckert/Cedaredge area since 1970, died on Saturday, March 6, 1999, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert, seven days before she would have celebrated her 88th birthday.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Ruth's life will be officiated by Pastor Bob Hillyer on Tuesday, March 9, at 4 p.m. from the Cedaredge Assembly of God Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.
Ruth Gammon was born in Kutch, Colo., on March 13, 1911, the daughter of Thomas and Myrtle (Hartsel) Gammon. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Kutch and Simla, Colo.
Ruth was married on Nov. 17, 1963, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Emery Lindley, who preceded her in death on July 6, 1990, in Eckert.
She was previously married to Weldon Sowell who preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1962, in Espanola, N.M.
Ruth, a homemaker, and her husband, Emery, moved from Colorado Springs to Eckert in 1970 where Ruth made her home until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Cedaredge.
Ruth loved and enjoyed crocheting, painting, and preaching to anyone who would listen.
Survivors include one stepson, Ken Lindley and wife Carol, of Eckert; one daughter, Doris "Dody" and husband Ward Lindley, of Cedaredge; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Robert S. Gammon, of Rifle; and one sister, Mary Fisher, of Billings, Mont.
In addition to her parents and both of her husbands, Ruth was also preceded in death by a brother, Tommy; and a sister, Martha.
James M. Krueger
Vietnam War Veteran
March 18, 1949 - March 6, 1999
CHINO, Calif. - James M. Krueger, age 49, a resident of Chino, Calif. for 10 years, died on Saturday, March 6, 1999, at his home in Chino.
Born on March 18, 1949, in Longview, Wash., James M. Krueger was the son of James and Kathryn Lucille (Bonner) Krueger. He spent his childhood in El Monte, Calif., and received his high school education at Rosemead High School in Rosemead, Calif., where he grew to adulthood.
James served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He married Erika Elisabeth Hoeftmann and was employed as senior maintenance supervisor for the Southern California Housing Development Corporation.
James was a very active member of the Abundant Living Family Church of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
The pride, joy, and love of James' life was his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Erika Krueger, of Chino, Calif.; one son, James J. Krueger, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; one daughter, Karen Light, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Norin E. Morales, of Mira Loma, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Patricia and husband James Clark; and Gail and husband Mike Schull, all of Delta.
James was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor James' life were officiated by Pastor Diego Mesa on Tuesday, March 9, at 11 a.m. from the Draper Memorial Chapel in Ontario, Calif. The service concluded at the chapel.
Graveside Services will be officiated by Pastor Diego Mesa on Thursday, March 11, at 11 a.m. in the Delta City Cemetery
in Delta, Colo.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of Draper Mortuary of Ontario, Calif. and Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

George W. DeLisle
World War II Veteran
Dec. 4, 1914 - March 7, 1999
DELTA - George W. DeLisle, age 84, of Delta, died on Sunday, March 7, 1999, in the Delta Care Center.
George W. DeLisle was born in Whitesboro, Texas, on Dec. 4, 1914, the son of Lee Lewis and Alice Lee (O'Dell) DeLisle. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood in Texas, spending his early life in Spur, Texas.
During World War II, George served his country in the United State Marine Corp.
On Jan. 22, 1946, he married Ila Pearl Bartlett in Clifton, Colo. This union was blessed with one son and two daughters.
Prior to his retirement, George worked as a truck driver and farmer. In the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s he lived in Delta off and on. On Oct. 20, 1974, Ila preceded George in death in Delta.
Ten years ago he moved back to Delta where he made his home until the time of his own death.
George was a member of the First Baptist Church of Delta.
Special interests George found pleasure in during his lifetime were hunting, fishing, gardening, most outdoor activities, and animals especially dogs.
He is survived by one son, Jerry DeLisle; two daughters: Kay Morefield and Judy Howard, all of Delta; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Donald DeLisle, of Taylor, Texas; and two sisters: Violet Holly, of Littlefield, Texas; and Fern Gardner, of Clifton.
George was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor George's life will be officiated by Pastor James Conley on Thursday, March 11, at 4:30 p.m. from the First Baptist Church, 1290 Pioneer Rd., in Delta.
Inurnment of the cremated remains will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.
Eluterio "Rudy" Garcia
World War II Veteran
March 9, 1918 - March 9, 1999
DELTA - World War II veteran, Eluterio "Rudy" Garcia, a resident of Delta since 1962, died on his 81st birthday on Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in his Delta home. Rudy was a retired drum operator for a leather tannery.
Eluterio "Rudy" Garcia, the son of Pedro and Carlota (Mares) Garcia, was born on March 9, 1918, in El Prado, N.M., where he spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood.
When he was 18 years old, he moved to Manassa, Colo. During World War II, from 1942 to 1945, Rudy served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Burma, India. He also lived in Bayfield, Colo. for two years of his life.
On April 22, 1945, Rudy married Primitiva Abeyta in Rosa, N.M. The Garcias were blessed with six sons and two daughters and would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year in April.
In 1962, the Garcias moved to Delta where Rudy made his home until the time of his death.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta and the CC Camp.
Rudy enjoyed watching his lawn grow and playing poker. The pride, joy, and love of his life was his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Eva Garcia, of Delta; five sons: Tommy Garcia and wife Hazel, of Montrose; Levi Garcia and wife Vicki; Alfred Garcia and wife Theresa; Andy Garcia; Raymond Garcia, all of Delta; two daughters: Lillian and husband Paul Nelson, of Grand Junction; Pauline and husband Beto Avila, of Montrose; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Mary and husband Salvador Martinez, of Grand Junction.
Rudy was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Paul E. Garcia; and one sister, Ida Varos.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, March 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service in Delta.
Rosary/Vigil will be recited on Friday, March 12, at 7 p.m. from St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 13, at 10 a.m. from St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.
Rite of Committal will follow the Mass in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.

NASHVILLE, Ark. - Former Montrose resident, Mary (Scott) Garrison, age 85, of Nashville, Ark., died on Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at her Nashville home.
The family will receive friends at the Latimer Funeral Home in Nashville on Wednesday, March 10, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Mary's life will be officiated by Dr. David Blase on Thursday, March 11, at 2 p.m. from the Latimer Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Nashville Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Latimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 298, Nashville, Ark. 71852.

Mary Scott, the daughter of Rufus D. and Blanche (Brown) Scott, was born on July 26, 1913, in the Highland Community of Nashville, Ark.
Mary was a retired self-employed beautician, had worked for the Western Union, and most recently retired as a teacher from the Little Red School House. She was also a homemaker.
Mary was a member of the Nashville First United Methodist Church, the Loyal Girls Sunday School Class, and the Elberta Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include one daughter, Pam and husband, Billy Wynn, of Nashville, Ark.; and two grandchildren: Jeremy and Angela Wynn, also of Nashville, Ark.
Other family survivors include three sisters: Helen Green, of Longview, Texas; Blanche Scott and Carolyn Scott, both of Nashville, Ark.; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy O. Garrison, who died in 1963; two brothers: D.B. Scott, who died in 1972 and Joe D. Scott, who died in 1998; and one sister, Eloise Dawley, who died in 1990.
