GRAND JUNCTION - Former Delta and Montrose resident, Eileen Kempf, age 77, a resident of Grand Junction since 1995, died on Friday, Sept 3, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.

Eileen Edwards, the daughter of Eber Robert Edwards and Leta Inez (Chamberlain) Edwards, was born on Oct. 16, 1921, in Hugoton, Kan. Shortly after Eileen's birth, the family moved to Corbel, Calif., then Compton, where they remained until 1932. They then moved to northern Arizona to homestead during the Depression, where Eileen and her sister walked four miles each way to school.

Eileen later returned to California to attend high school and after graduation she moved to Phoenix, Ariz. where she completed business school. Eileen returned to Los Angeles to attend UCLA.

Upon her graduation, she worked as manager of the Los Angeles Passenger Terminal throughout much of World War II. Around 1939, Eileen's mother moved to Delta as a means of improving her health. In 1950, Eileen joined her mother to be close to her in her elder years.

While living in Delta, she managed the Delta Municipal Light & Power Company. After about three years, she moved to Montrose, and on Dec. 15, 1954, she married a Montrose attorney, George V. Kempf, in Montrose. George later became a District Court Judge, serving the 7th Judicial District of Colorado. Judge Kempf died on Nov. 7, 1980.

She enjoyed wood carving, and once carved a chess set in which each piece was different. Ellen enjoyed building and construction and moved houses onto vacant lots, remodeled and reconstructed them, and managed them for a number of years as rental property. She once took her travel trailer and traveled for six weeks by herself.

Eileen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, drawing, and was an excellent seamstress. She always loved animals and had many pets throughout her lifetime.

The caring nature of Eileen's personality led her to become the director of the Uncompahgre Workshop, a sheltered workshop for the developmentally disabled, from 1968 to 1978. She invented a stationary product made from Colorado wildflowers that became a popular gift item statewide and gave much needed exposure to the disabled people who made it.
