Mary Frances (Bond) Compton
Retired School Teacher

PAONIA - Mary Compton of 4036 Cedar Lane in Paonia, died on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, in her home four days after celebrating her 97th birthday.
Mary Frances Bond was born on Sept. 24, 1902, in Flagler, Colo., the daughter of Ernest Marion Bond and Anna (Lewis) Bond. Mary graduated from Canon City High School and was later a graduate of Western State College in Gunnison in 1928, followed by earning a Library Science degree from Denver University in 1950.
Mary married Marcus Basil Compton in 1926 and they moved to Pueblo where they lived until 1944. Their union was blessed with two sons.
Prior to her retirement in 1968, Mary taught in the Delta County School District for 32 years. She later became a nurse practitioner for the Christian Science Nursing Home in Denver until Basil's poor health forced them to move to Mississippi in 1980. Basil preceded Mary in death in 1984.
In 1991, Mary returned to Paonia to live out her remaining years with her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Barbara (Bradshaw) Compton.
She is survived by her two sons: Lloyd Compton and wife Janice, of Pascagoula, Miss.; Keith Compton and wife Barbara, of Paonia; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Basil, Mary was also preceded in death by three brothers: Will, Bob, and Ernie Bond; and one sister, Florence (Bond) McCollum.
No services are currently being planned.

Carl John Botz
World War II Veteran/Miner
Jan. 31, 1920 - Sept. 25, 1999
OURAY - World War II veteran and retired hard rock miner, Carl John Botz, age 79, a resident of Ouray for 44 years, died of cancer Saturday morning, Sept. 25, 1999, in his home at Ouray.
Carl John Botz, the son of Frank Botz and Josephine (Skula) Botz who were both born in Yugoslavia, was born on Jan. 31, 1920, in Salida, Colo., where he spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood.
During World War II, Carl enlisted for military duty on April 28, 1946. He served as a United States Army Staff Sergeant of the 7th Cavalry Regiment. Carl was awarded the Army Medal of Perfect Attendance, the American Theater of Operation Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68, the Meritorious Unit Award, and the Victory Medal. He was squadron leader 653 of the Southern Philippines (Liberation) Luzon. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Experienced Rifleman Badge. Carl was honorably discharged on Feb. 7, 1949 when his brother was killed in the United States and his family needed him at home. He returned to Salida and later moved to Alaska to work on the Alaska Railroad as an engineer.
On March 31, 1953, Carl married Christina Sierra in Taos, N.M. In 1955, Carl and Christina were remarried in a religious ceremony at St. Daniel's Catholic Church in Ouray.
He returned to Colorado and lived in Silverton where he worked in the mining profession. He eventually moved his family to Ouray in 1955 where he was associated with the Idarado Mine and later Camp Bird Mine where he retired.
Carl was a member of St. Daniel's Catholic Church of Ouray.
He loved hunting and earned the nickname "Dead Eye Dick" for his accuracy in hitting the target. He absolutely loved fishing and being outdoors camping. Later in life he enjoyed being outdoors gardening. Above all, Carl loved and delighted in spending time and just being with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Christina Botz, of Ouray; one son, Frank Botz and wife Trisha and their daughter, Natasha (Carl's only grandchild), of Ouray; one daughter, Judy Botz, of Ouray; two great-grandchildren; one stepson, George Sierra and wife Florence, of Montrose; and their family: George Sierra Jr. and family, of Montrose; Paul and family, of Pueblo; and Cliford and family, of Pueblo (Carl's three stepgrandchildren).
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Frankie Botz and Phil Botz; and one sister, Sally Lorving.
Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Daniel's Catholic Church in Ouray.
Memorial Mass in remembrance and to honor Carl's life will be officiated by The Rev. Nathanial Foshage on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Daniel's Catholic Church in Ouray.
Cremation has taken place, with inurnment of the cremains to follow the Mass in Cedar Hills Cemetery
at Ouray. Veterans and Elks of Ouray will conduct the Committal Service. A luncheon will be served at the church following Committal.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions will be taken at the Citizens State Banks to be given in Carl's memory to the Hospice of the Uncompahgre Valley.
Fay Isabell Young
Loving Mother, Grandmother
Feb. 28, 1928 - Sept. 29, 1999
MONTROSE - Fay Isabell Young, age 71, a resident of Montrose since the early 1940s, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 29, 1999, in her home at Montrose.
Fay Isabell Moore, the twin daughter of Joseph B. Moore and Blanche Mamie (Hughes) Moore, was born on Feb. 28, 1928, in Palisade, Colo. She spent her childhood moving around Colorado with her family as part of the family freight business.
Prior to her retirement, Fay was employed as a telephone operator, a checker for City Market, and also worked for Russell Stover Candies in Montrose.
Fay was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved her pet dog and especially enjoyed collecting owls. She loved people and had many friends. Fay will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include two sons: Maurice B. Cutler and wife Sallie; Marshall H. Cutler, all of Montrose; four daughters: Nanette P. and husband Rhey Wright, of Fort Collins; Renice K. and husband Rob Lake, of Montrose; Lynnae F. and husband Pat Whitehead, of Kirkland, Ariz.; Rogene R. Seevers, of Montrose; and 10 grandchildren.
Fay was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sisters.
At Fay's request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
Arrangements were handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Helen Sylvester
Life's Main Focus: Family

MONTROSE - Helen Sylvester, age 82, a resident of Montrose since 1948, died on Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
Helen Poppert was born in Harlan County, Neb. on Jan. 12, 1917, the daughter of George Poppert and Myrtle (Pollett) Poppert. She spent her childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood in Nebraska.
Helen married Everett Sylvester on Oct. 27, 1935, in Atlanta, Neb. and their union was blessed with two daughters.
Helen, a homemaker and at one time a bookkeeper for Sylvester Equipment, moved with her husband from Greeley to Montrose in 1948 where she resided until the time of her death. Everett preceded Helen in death in December of 1983.
She was a member of the Montrose Christian Church, a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, a charter member of Montrose Federated Women's Club, and a Past Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls No. 33. Helen also belonged to Beta Sigma Phi Choir Group and Order of Eastern Star No. 40.
Among her many special interests in life, Helen especially enjoyed sewing, camping, and music. The main focus, love, and delight of Helen's life was her family.
Survivors grateful to have shared Helen's life include her two daughters: Marlene and husband Ken Townsend, of Montrose; Marcia and husband Bill Carlson, of Colorado Springs; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Louis Poppert, of Bertrand, Neb.
In addition to her husband, Helen was also preceded in death by her parents; and six brothers: Russell, Rex, Lowell, Don, Daryl, and an infant brother Merle.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home in Montrose.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and celebrate Helen's life will be officiated by Ken Backman, Hospice Chaplain, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

James Larimore "Larry" Pearsall
Owned, Operated Pearsall Nursery

MONTROSE - World War II veteran and retired Montrose businessman, James Larimore "Larry" Pearsall, age 85, a resident of Montrose for 65 years, died of a sudden illness Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, 1999, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
James Larimore Pearsall, the son of Truman Pearsall and Ada (Kirby) Pearsall, was born on May 23, 1914, in McMinnville, Tenn. He spent his childhood in Shelbyville, Tenn. and Priest River, Idaho.
During World War II, beginning in 1942, Larry served his country as a supply sergeant with the 757th Battalion in North Africa and Italy.
After the war, Larry returned to Montrose where he married Frances Weber on May 24, 1953. Their union was blessed with two sons. Larry and Frances had shared 46 loving years of marriage this year in May.
In 1953, Larry entered the nursery business. He owned and operated Pearsall Nursery in Montrose until his retirement in 1986.
He was an active member of the Montrose Christian Church and enjoyed singing with the choir. He also belonged to the American Nurseryman's Association.
Larry enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, and climbing 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado. Later he took up cross-country running, 10K and other long distance running. During one 12-month period, he ran 3,000 miles! As he grew older, Larry walked long distances in order to remain fit and to spend time outdoors. He was an avid football fan and followed high school, college, and professional teams with great interest. His love of fishing remained with him as long as his health permitted him to fish.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Pearsall, of Montrose; two sons: James Pearsall, of Montrose; Brian Pearsall, of Lakewood; and two grandchildren: Joshua James Pearsall and Rachel Lauren Pearsall.
Other family survivors include one brother, Edward "Tom" Pearsall, of Alhambra, Calif.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Oliver Pearsall, Ramsey Pearsall, Louie Pearsall; and one sister, Mamie Scott.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Funeral Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects to Larry's life will be officiated by The Rev. Don Woodstock, of the Norwood Christian Church, on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Grace Louise McColl
Retired English Teacher
Aug. 14, 1939 - Sept. 27, 1999
HOTCHKISS - Grace Louise McColl, age 60, of Hotchkiss, died on Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, in the Paonia Care Center and Rehab Center. She had been a resident of Paonia and Hotchkiss for six years.
Grace Louise Bichof, the daughter of Fredrick Bichof and Mary (Smith) Bichof, was born on Aug. 14, 1939, in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she spent her childhood, graduated from high school, and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at Colorado College in Denver and CU at Boulder, earning her Teacher's Degree.
Grace married Arthur McColl on July 1, 1969, in Colorado Springs. Their union was blessed with two sons and one daughter. The McColls celebrated 30 loving years of marriage this year on July 1.
Grace worked as a English teacher for 31 years in Denver Public Schools. After the McColls moved from Denver to Paonia, she was a teacher for the Delta County School District for five years.
She was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church of Paonia and the Retired Teachers Association.
Grace was very supportive of the Delta County swim program. She loved to read and always enjoyed being in the classroom dealing with the children and teaching them. Grace will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew and loved her
Survivors include her husband, Arthur McColl; two sons: Ian McColl and Rob McColl, all of Hotchkiss; and one daughter, Stephanie McColl, attending Bard College in Hyde Park, N.Y.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Molly Bcarzi, of Colorado Springs; and Molly Link, of Aurora.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Fredrick and Mary Bichof.
Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Grace's life will be officiated by The Rev. Steve Wengrovius on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Delta. The service will conclude at the church.
Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery
at Colorado Springs.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Carla Gomez
Had a Great Sense of Humor
March 27, 1961 - Sept. 29, 1999
DELTA - Carla Gomez, age 38, a homemaker and lifetime Delta resident, died on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Carla Gomez, the daughter of Marqarita Nellie Gomez, was born on March 27, 1961, in Delta, Colo., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and lived her entire lifetime until the time of her death.
Carla was a homemaker and loved music, reading, playing cards, and dancing. She will be lovingly remembered for her great sense of humor.
Survivors include her fiance, Sabastion Flores; one son, Mario Gomez; and her mother, Marqarita Gomez, all of Delta.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Raymond Salazar, of Delta; Frankie Salazar, of Alamosa; and three sisters: Sandra Martinez, of Montrose; Eleanor and husband Uvaldo Guttierez, of Delta; Angie Sanchez, of Grand Junction; 21 nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncle, and cousins.
Visitation for family and friends was held on Friday, Oct. 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Delta Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Carla's life were officiated by Pastor Camilo Gomez on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel at Delta.
Interment followed the service in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Delta.

"Her Family Was The
Love Of Her Life"

MONTROSE - Phyllis J. Garrison, age 58, of Montrose, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 30, 1999, in her home at Montrose after a very lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Phyllis J. Moon was born in Wewoka, Okla. on June 1, 1941, the daughter of Nola Whitener and stepfather Clell Whitener. She grew to adulthood in Olathe, graduating from the Olathe High School in 1959.
Phyllis married Edwin R. Garrison on July 19, 1961, in Aztec, N.M. Their union was blessed with one daughter and three sons and they shared 38 loving years of marriage.
The Garrisons were in the livestock business in many locations in Western Colorado, using Montrose as their headquarters. They operated ranches in 11 counties in Colorado.
Phyllis touched everyone she ever knew with her kindness and gentleness. She had the ability to make everyone feel special. Her family was the very center of her life and she loved being with her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook and always had enough for anyone who happened to stop by. Phyllis brought a depth of love and a brilliant light into the world of those around her and will be so deeply missed by her family and many friends.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Edwin R. Garrison, of Montrose; and her four children: One daughter, Geraldine "Geri" and husband Chad Wold, of Montrose; and three sons: Terry Garrison and wife Barbara, of Concord, Calif.; Kevin Garrison and wife Sheila; and Tommy Garrison, all of Montrose.
Phyllis was the proud and loving grandmother of six grandchildren: Amanda Flowers and Trevor Wold, both of Montrose; Scott Garrison and Sean Garrison, both of Concord, Calif.; and Candace Garrison and Cameron Garrison, both of Montrose.
Other family survivors include five brothers: Alvin "Al" Whitener and wife Sheila, of Grand Junction; Gary Whitener and wife Diana, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Tim Moon and wife Susan, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Tom Moon and wife, of Dallas, Texas; David Moon, of Ohio; one sister, Kay and husband Ed Deti, of Olathe; and one stepsister, Donna and husband Leon Oliver, of Eufaula, Okla.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother, Nola Whitener; her stepfather, Clell Whitener; her father, Hubbard Moon; and one brother, Terry Moon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Western Colorado Bank for medical expenses incurred.
Funeral Services to pay respects to Phyllis' life will be officiated on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at the First Assembly of God on Hillcrest in Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
