Kevin Lee Patterson

An Infant

Sept. 20, 1999 Oct. 2, 1999

DELTA - Kevin Lee Patterson was born on Sept. 20, 1999, in Delta, Colo., the son of Josh Lee Patterson and Rhonda Lynn Kasinger of Delta. He died on Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.

In addition to his parents, Kevin is also survived by his grandparents: Kevin and Doni Liddell, of Austin; Joyce and Arnie Cottrell; and Kim and Johnny Kasinger, all of Cedaredge.

Kevin was preceded in death by his grandfather, Floyd Patterson, who died in 1981; and his great-grandfather, Albert Messano.

Funeral Services to honor Kevin's life will be officiated on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.

Interment will follow the service in the Delta City Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Delta.

Artie Anna Hardwick

Homemaker, Mother, Grandmother

Feb. 14, 1931 Oct. 1, 1999

CRAWFORD - Artie Anna Hardwick, age 68, a homemaker, mother, and resident of Crawford for 20 years, died on Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in her home at Crawford.

Artie Anna Pierson, the daughter of Lester Pierson and Hazel Elizabeth (Harp) Pierson, was born on Feb. 14, 1931, in Lamar, Colo. She spent her childhood at Lamar and Hotchkiss, graduating from the Hotchkiss High School.

Artie's marriage to James Graham ended in divorce.

She married William F. Hardwick on July 12, 1979, in Paonia, Colo. William had just preceded Artie in death last month on Sept. 12, 1999 in Delta.

After growing up in Hotchkiss, Artie lived in the Aspen and Carbondale areas before moving back to Hotchkiss and Crawford, where she remained until the time of her death.

She was a member of the Methodist Church of Crawford and enjoyed reading and flower gardening. Artie greatly enjoyed the numerous hours she spent helping older people in need in the Crawford area, reading to them and visiting.

Survivors include three daughters: Gloria A. Polson, of Hotchkiss; Janis Z. Ryan, of Mt. Pulaski, Ill.; Marsy S. Moore, of Hotchkiss; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include her mother, Hazel E. Pierson, of Crawford; and three brothers: Donavon Pierson, of Omaha, Neb.; Victor Pierson, of Dallas, Texas; and Daryl Pierson, of Paonia.

In addition to her husband, Artie was also preceded in death by her father, Lester Pierson.

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Artie's life will be officiated by The Rev. Judi Taylor on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Crawford. The service will conclude at the church.

Cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Gary Lee Thornton

Loving Husband, Father, Son, Brother

Feb. 11, 1946 Oct. 3, 1999

CEDAREDGE - Gary Lee Thornton was born on Feb. 11, 1946, at Springfield, Colo., the son of Fred and Odelee (Mayhan) Thornton. He died Sunday afternoon, Oct. 3, 1999, in an explosion at the Louisiana-Pacific Corp. Plant near Olathe where he had been employed for seven years.

In October of 1953, at the age of 7, Gary moved with his family to Cedaredge, where he spent the rest of his childhood, graduated from the Cedaredge High School, and grew to adulthood.

Following his high school graduation, Gary served his country for four years in the United States Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga.

He married Laurie Jean Kunkel on Sept. 18, 1976, at Christ Chapel on Grand Mesa. Gary and Laurie celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary last month.

Gary accepted the Lord as a boy and was a member of the Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church of Cedaredge.

He was a loving husband, father, son, and brother. Gary dearly loved camping and hunting. His sudden death has left a huge unwanted emptiness in the lives of all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Laurie Thornton; two daughters: Aimee Marin, age 18; Lynsie Manon, age 17; and one son, Rhett Wade, age 10, all of the family home at Cedaredge.

Other family survivors include his parents, Fred and Odelee Thornton, of Cedaredge; three sisters: Sharon and husband Ron Ebaugh, of Phippsburg; Sonya and husband Natheal Ballard, of Delta; Vicky and husband Ron Shellabarger, of Grand Junction; one brother, Don Thornton and wife Annette, of Loma; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Gary's life will be officiated by Pastor Del Hampton on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church in Cedaredge.

Interment will follow the service in the Cedaredge Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery, 682 1725 Road, in Delta; telephone 874-8633.

Raymond L. "Skip" Franks Jr.

Montrose Auto Zone Salesman

Nov. 5, 1937 Oct. 4, 1999

MONTROSE - Raymond L. "Skip" Franks Jr., age 61, a resident of Montrose since 1973, died Monday evening, Oct. 4, 1999, at his home in Montrose.

Raymond L. Franks Jr. was born in Los Banos, Calif. on Nov. 5, 1937, the son of Raymond L. Franks Sr. and Lena Marie (Koch) Franks. Skip attended high school in Creede, Colo.

He was proud to serve his country in the United States Navy.

Frank married Linda A. Hedglin on April 10, 1964, in Edgemont, S.D. Their union was blessed with two daughters and one son and they were privileged to celebrate 35 loving years of marriage this year in April.

Skip and his family moved to Montrose in 1973 where he made his home until the time of his death.

He was employed as a Parts Pro in sales for the Montrose Auto Zone.

Skip was a member of the Menoken Christian Church near Montrose and attended the Rosemont Baptist Church in Montrose.

He enjoyed horses, fishing, and camping. Skip's love and delight in life was spending time with his five grandchildren.

Survivors grateful to have shared Skip's life include his wife, Linda A. Franks, of Montrose; one son, Robert R. Franks and wife Mylissa, of Olathe; and two daughters: Raelynn and husband Kirk Roemer, of Grand Junction; and Rhonda and husband Charles Burch, of Montrose.

Skip was the proud and doting grandfather of five grandchildren: Kayleigh and Cade Franks, Alexis Roemer, and Mikhala and Trevor Burch.

Other family survivors include his mother, Lena Franks, of Montrose; one brother, Ronald Franks and wife Patricia, also of Montrose; and one sister, Jeanette and husband Bryce Sanburg, of Grand Junction.

Skip was preceded in death by his father, Raymond L. Franks Sr.

Memorial Services in remembrance, to honor, and pay respects to Skip's life will be officiated by Pastors Timothy Wade and Allen Miller on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. in the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.

The eulogy will be given by Lymon Thomas, with Jody Brown serving as vocalist and guitarist.

Cremation will precede the service, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose.

Bessie Mae Horitski

Loved to Paint

Oct. 14, 1917 - Oct. 5, 1999

OLATHE - Bessie Mae Horitski, age 81, of Olathe, died on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert nine days before she would have celebrated her 82nd birthday.

Bessie Mae Hickman, the daughter of Isaac Allen Hickman and Minnie (Ferris) Hickman, was born on Oct. 14, 1917, in Lovelady, Texas. She spent her childhood in Texas and received her GED in Colorado Springs later in her life.

Bessie married Raymond Horitski, with the marriage ending in divorce.

She was employed as an accountant and manager with the United States Air Force at the main PX at Fort Carson, Colo.

Having always considered Colorado her home, Bessie moved to Colorado nine years ago where she remained until the time of her death.

Bessie never really retired as she was always busy doing something. She helped at a nursing home in Texas and drove a school bus in Centerville, Texas. Among the many loves in her life, Bessie especially loved to paint, quilt, and work in her garden.

Survivors include one son, Edward Charles Dueboay and wife Margaret, of Florida; two daughters: Nancy Ann and husband Bill Swanson, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Malinda Horitski, of Delta; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Bessie was preceded in death by her father and mother and her former husband.

Memorial Services in remembrance and to honor Bessie's life will be officiated on Friday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Owen G. "Bud" Janssen

Husband, Father, Grandfather

July 9, 1938 - Oct. 7, 1999

CEDAREDGE - Owen G. "Bud" Janssen, age 61, a truck driver and resident of Cedaredge since 1976, died on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in the Horizons Care Center at Eckert.

Owen G. Janssen, the son of Milton Janssen and Zoe (Smith) Janssen, was born on July 9, 1938, in Boulder, Colo., where he spent his childhood, graduated from the Boulder High School in 1955, and grew to adulthood.

Bud married Susan Watters on April 24, 1971, in Westminster, Colo. They had the privilege of sharing 28 loving years of marriage this year in April.

In 1976, the Janssens moved from Boulder to Cedaredge where Bud made his home until the time of his death.

Bud's special interests and hobbies that added meaning and pleasure to his life were hunting, fishing, and trains.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Janssen, of Cedaredge; two sons: Clay Janssen, of Wyoming; Ty Janssen and wife Deanna, of Colorado; one daughter, Shawna Janssen, of Colorado; and one grandchild.

Other family survivors include six brothers: Darrell Wright and wife Marie, of California; Bob Coatsworth and wife Joann, of Colorado; Gary Coatsworth and wife Cathy, of Idaho; Tony Janssen and wife Kathy; David Janssen and wife Ann; and Mert Janssen and wife Chris, all of Colorado.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Zoe Janssen.

Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Bud's life will be officiated by The Rev. Joan Uda on Monday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Cedaredge United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; telephone 874-9988.

Gladys Estelle Terry

Three-Year Delta Resident

Aug. 22, 1921 - Oct. 6, 1999

DELTA - Gladys Estelle Terry, age 78, a homemaker and resident of Delta for three years, died on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Gladys Estelle Morton was born in Balmorhea, Texas on Aug. 22, 1921, the daughter of William Allen Morton and Ovie Mae (Jones) Morton. She spent her childhood and graduated from high school in Alpine, Texas. Gladys continued to pursue her education at the Sul Ross College in Alpine, Texas.

Gladys married Weldon Terry on April 19, 1948, in El Paso, Texas. Weldon preceded Gladys in death on Feb. 5, 1977.

Three years ago Gladys moved from Alpine, Texas to Delta where she made her home until the time of her death.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alpine, Texas and greatly enjoyed fishing and golfing.

Survivors include one brother, Ernest Wynn Morton, of Vanderpool, Texas; and one niece, "Myrt" and husband Bert Hodges, of Austin, Colo.

In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was also preceded in death by three sisters: Willie Tarpley, Rena Strother, Josephine Jones; and one brother, Ray Calvin Morton.

No services are planned at this time.

Arrangements were handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc. of Delta.

Jerry Loper

Paonia Gun Smith Many Years

Aug. 10, 1933 - Oct. 5, 1999

PAONIA - Jerry Loper, age 66, a businessman and Paonia resident for 34 years, died on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in the Paonia Care and Rehab Center.

Jerry Loper, the son of Mancy Loper and Ethel (Seitz) Loper, was born on Aug. 10, 1933, in Houston, Texas, where he spent his childhood, graduated from Ragon High School, and grew to adulthood.

Jerry, a gun smith, owned and operated M & J Guns in Paonia for many years.

He married Linda Ewing on Dec. 9, 1983, in the North Fork Baptist Church at Paonia. Jerry and Linda would have celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary this year in December.

Jerry was a member of the North Fork Baptist Church of Paonia and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

He was a man who was hard to get to know, but, once you got to know him, Jerry was a teddy bear at heart. He was a kind, quiet, and very loving man. Jerry especially enjoyed leather work, fishing, and loved and delighted in his family. The crowning glory and love of Jerry's life were his two granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Loper, of Paonia; three sons: Peter Ewing and wife Kathy, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; Jimmy Nichols and wife Teresa; and Paul Ewing, all of Thornton; and two granddaughters: Gabrielle Ewing, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and Kayla Nichols, of Thornton.

Other family survivors include his mother-in-law, Sylvia Ewing, of Paonia.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.

Graveside Services in remembrance and to honor Jerry's life will be officiated by George Schroeder on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m. in the Cedar Hills Cemetery at Paonia.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
