Arlene Loretta White
Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother
May 15, 1915 - Feb. 15, 2000
HOTCHKISS - Lifetime North Fork Valley area resident, Arlene Loretta White, age 84, a homemaker and resident of Hotchkiss, died on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Born on May 15, 1915 in Somerset, Colo., Arlene Loretta Hammond was the daughter of Samuel Roy and Oria Ella (Hiatt) Hammond. She grew up in Somerset and Paonia and graduated from the Paonia High School.
Arlene married Raymond White on Nov. 8, 1936, in Paonia, Colo. They were the parents of four children and would have shared 64 years of marriage this year in November.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, a past member of the Hotchkiss Emblem Club and Neighborly Circle; and belonged to Rogers Mesa Modern Women's Club.
During her lifetime, Arlene had many treasured loves in her life that brought her happiness, including: Needlework, playing bridge, sewing, watching sports; and fishing in Oregon every summer for 20 years.
Survivors so thankful to have shared Arlene's life are her husband, Raymond White; one son, Bob White and wife Eddy, all of Hotchkiss; and three daughters: Ludene and husband Don Urquhart, of Castle Rock; Hazel Lee and husband Dan MacKendrick, of Grand Junction; and Charlene and husband Mike Price, of Hotchkiss.
Arlene was the proud and loving grandmother of 13 grandchildren and the great-grandmother of six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Orville, Martin and Maurice.
Graveside Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Arlene's life will be officiated by Carl Clay on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss. In case of inclement weather, the Funeral Service will be conducted at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss

John Robert Vreeland
Retired Security Guard
April 25, 1944 - Feb. 17, 2000
MONTROSE - John Robert Vreeland, age 55, a retired security guard and a resident of Montrose for 29 years, died of a stroke Thursday afternoon, Feb. 17, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
John Robert Vreeland, the son of Robert Lewis and Rosalea (Maddox) Vreeland, was born on April 25, 1944, in Salina, Kan. He spent his childhood in Canutillo, Texas, and went to high school in Willcox, Ariz. John continued his education and graduated from barber college in El Paso, Texas, with a barber degree.
He joined the United States Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1962 in basic training at Fort Polk, La.
John was previously married to Brenda Fearn, Betty Kiker, and Teressa Ware, with all three marriage ending in divorce.
In 1970, the Vreeland family moved to Montrose where John was employed with Frontier Airlines until 1976. He then went into business with Ralph Tafoya when they started Golden Eagle Security. John sold his part of the business to Ralph in 1979.
He was a member of the Baptist faith and during his 55 years of life, John's loves that brought so much happiness into his life were family gatherings, fishing, traveling, and reading the Bible. He was also a camera enthusiast.
He will be remembered for his two favorite sayings: "Fine and dandy, like a piece of candy" and"Yo."
Survivors so very grateful to share John's life are two sons: Robert Lewis Lester Vreeland and John Aaron Vreeland, both of Bedrock; one daughter, Joe Anne Huggins, of Paris, Texas; and three grandchildren: Ashley, Andy, and Corrina Huggins.
Other family survivors include four brothers: Eddie Rex Maddox and wife Debbie, of Montrose; Ernie Henry Vreeland and wife Cecie, of Landsburg, N.M.; Jack Frank Vreeland and wife Janice, of Hachita, N.M.; Hugh Arnold Jones and wife Lavanda, of Altus, Okla.; two sisters: Jody and husband John Hadley; Ginger Jones, all of Montrose; 12 nephews; seven nieces; as well as a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lewis Vreeland and Rosalea Jones.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home.
Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor John's life will be officiated by The Rev. Kay Spinder on Monday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bill Maddox, John Hadley, and Casey Reed.
Pallbearers will be Ron Solar, Ralph Tafoya, Bill Hadley, Eddie R.W. Maddox, Eddie R. Maddox, James E. Vette, and Jack L. Vette.
Dinner will follow for the family and friends with the location to be announced at the Graveside Service.

Allen Henry 'Bud' Vincent Sr.
Delta Co. School District Retiree
April 18, 1928 - Feb. 15, 2000
DELTA - Allen Henry "Bud" Vincent Sr., a resident of Delta County since his early childhood, died on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at the age of 71.
Allen Henry Vincent, the son of John Otis and Lillian (Nightingale) Vincent, was born on April 18, 1928, in Englewood, Colo., where he spent his childhood until he was 8 years old. Bud then moved to Delta County with his family where he spent the remainder of his childhood, graduated from the Delta High School in 1947, and lived the rest of his lifetime until the time of his death.
Prior to his retirement in 1984, Bud was employed as a maintenance engineer for the Delta County School District with over 25 years of service.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of Delta and Delta Elks Lodge No. 1235.
Bud will be remember for being such an avid fisherman.
Survivors include two sons: Allen Vincent Jr. and wife Karen, of Fayetteville, Ga.; Timothy Vincent, of Hanford, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Evelyn Vincent, of Delta.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Vincent; and one sister, Betty Garrett.
Graveside Services in remembrance and to pay respects to Bud's life will be officiated by Bishop Ted Graff on Friday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Delta City Cemetery.

Ray W. O'Connor
World War II Veteran
Sept. 17, 1914 - Feb. 16, 2000
DELTA - Ray W. O'Connor, age 85, a resident of Delta since 1970, died on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at his home in Delta.
Ray W. O'Connor, the son of Jack and Cecil (Edsall) O'Connor, was born on Sept. 17, 1914 in Phoenix, Ore., where he spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood.
Ray married Naomi Boyer on Nov. 10, 1939 in Eureka, Calif.
During World War II, Ray proudly served his country in the United States Army from March 1945 to November 1946.
He owned and operated a family grocery store in Central Point, Ore., until his retirement. In the early 1970s, the O'Connors moved to Delta where Ray worked part-time for the Delta Parks & Recreation Department.
Naomi preceded Ray in death on April 10, 1989, in Delta. Following her death, he continued to make his home in Delta until the time of his own death.
He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Delta.
Ray greatly enjoyed stream fishing and loved music, especially music from the Big Band Era.
Survivors so very grateful to share Ray's life are one brother, Marion O'Connor and wife Mary, of Bakersfield, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Jane O'Connor, of Central Point, Ore.; three nephews: John R. Pope, of Delta; Jack Milhoan, of Oregon; Jim Milhoan, of California; six nieces: Nova Joy Bunderson, of Grand Junction; Ena Joyce Smith and Nancy Sundman, both of Central Point, ore.; Lorene Wright and Patricia Milleson, both of Delta; Judy Lee, of Reno, Ore.; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Naomi; Ray was also preceded in death by two brothers: Jim O'Connor and Merle W. O'Connor; and one niece, Evon Laner.
No services are planned.

Laurence J. McCluskey
Former Montrose Businessman
Feb. 23, 1914 - Feb. 16, 2000
PUEBLO WEST - Laurence J. McCluskey, age 85, a former Montrose businessman, died on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, seven days before his 86th birthday.
Laurence was born on Feb. 23, 1914, in Sand Springs, Okla., the son of Laurence and Hazel (nee' Akard) McCluskey.
He owned and operated the Shanty Restaurant in Montrose for 17 years and was also a member of Montrose Elks Lodge No. 1053.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie McCluskey, of the family home in Pueblo West; one son, David McCluskey and wife Betty Ann, of Montrose; one daughter, Deanna McDowell, of Oregon; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous stepchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Floyd McCluskey and wife Wanda, of Idaho.
Laurence was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dave McCluskey; and one sister.
At his request, there will be no viewing or services.

F. Rockwell Hollands
World War II Veteran
Oct. 19, 1917 - Feb. 11, 2000
PAONIA - F. Rockwell Hollands, age 82, died on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, in Portland, Ore.
F. Rockwell Hollands was born on Oct. 19, 1917, in Paonia, Colo. and lived in the house that is now the American Legion Hall. At the age of 2 he moved to Delta, where he lived until he was 10 years old. He and his family finally settled in Homell, N.Y.
Rockwell graduated from Exeter Academy in 1936 and from Harvard University in 1940.
During World War II, he proudly served his country in the United States Merchant Marines.
After the war, Rockwell worked as a journalist in Connecticut, Nevada and California. At the time of his retirement in 1972, he was public relations director for Lockheed Missiles and Space in California, and was actively involved with Lockheed's participation in the space program.
In 1978, Rockwell, his wife, Clara, and son, Walter, moved back to Paonia. Clara preceded Rockwell in death in 1988.
Survivors include one son, Walter Hollands; one daughter, Charlotte Darrow; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Zwingle.
Funeral Services in remembrance and to honor Rockwell's life were officiated by The Rev. James Gall on Thursday, Feb. 17, in Paonia.
Interment followed the service in the Bethlehem Cemetery

Edith Louise Gleason
Retired Restaurant Chef
Jan. 24, 1933 - Feb. 19, 2000
MONTROSE - Edith Louise Gleason, age 67, a retired restaurant chef and a lifetime Montrose resident, died of a sudden illness on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at her home in Montrose.
Edith Louise Ripley, the daughter of William H. and Annabelle (Kile) Ripley, was born on Jan. 24, 1933, in Olathe, Colo., where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
Edith married Edward E. Gleason on June 18, 1950 in Montrose, Colo. After their marriage, they established their home in the Olathe area and later moved to Uravan in the West End of Montrose County. Edward was engaged in uranium mining and heavy equipment and Edith began her career of cooking in area restaurants.
In 1986, the couple moved to Redvale and in 1987 Edith moved back to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death. In addition to working as a cook in the West End, Edith also worked in restaurants as a cook in Placerville, Ridgway, and at Sun Valley Truckstop in Montrose prior to her retirement in 1991.
She was a member of the Montrose Christian Church and the Menoken Christian Church, and belonged to the Colona Helping Hands Club and the Rebekah Lodge.
Besides working and raising her family, Edith especially loved and enjoyed being outdoors with her family fishing, which also included winter ice fishing. She enjoyed attending yard sales and playing cards with her many friends. Above all, Edith delighted in spending most of her time with her family, her children, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Survivors so very grateful to share Edith's life are three sons: Edward Gleanson Jr., of Ridgway; Franklin Gleason, of Farmington, N.M.; Jerald Gleason, of Olathe; two daughters: Brenda Hecht, of Montrose; Janet Bedker, of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Bill Ripley; and one sister, Edna Hubbs, both of Olathe.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edward E. Gleason.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Edith's life will be officiated by Minister Alan Miller on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Menoken Christian Church, north of Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Norwood Cemetery

Alfred Eugene 'Gene' Emmons
Miner, Farmer, Ditch Rider
July 1, 1908 - Feb. 13, 2000
PAONIA - Alfred Eugene "Gene" Emmons, age 91, died of a heart attack on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.
Gene was born on July 1, 1908, in the Minnesota Creek area above Paonia, Colo., to Robert "Harve" and Estella Ella Emmons. He was schooled at Bowie, Colo.
At an early age, Gene went to work in the coal mines, starting at the Porter Mine along Minnesota Creek. Throughout his life he was employed by most of the other mines in the North Fork area, retiring from U.S. Steel in Somerset. He was a member of U.M.W.A. Local No. 6417 in Paonia.
He worked for Aaron Clough farming and as a ditch rider on the Turner and upper Minnesota ditches.
Gene married June Jeanette Adams of Baca, Colo. on Oct. 15, 1935, at Delta, Colo. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of one son, Ralph Eugene.
Survivors include three brothers: Maurice "Moe" Emmons and wife Ruth; Russell Emmons and wife Shirley; Dan Emmons and wife Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Albertha Emmons, all of Paonia; three sisters: Edna Sharp, of Aurora; Winifred Lane, of Paonia; Nelda Hunt, of Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Martha; two grandchildren: Cassandra and Morgan, of Denver; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June; his son, Ralph; seven brothers: Carl, Dick, Ted, Horace, Boyd, Walter, Ward; and one sister, Golda.
Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and driving his battery operated car that gave him some independence. He also enjoyed drives in the mountains with his brother, "Moe," and his two very special cats, a gray tabby named "Tommy" and a Siamese named "Baby."
Graveside Services will be officiated by James Gall and the U.M.W.A. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Cedar Hill Cemetery
at Paonia.
