Virginia Juanita Medina Murrieta

Homemaker, Outstanding Mother

Jan. 27, 1932 March 4, 2000

LAZEAR - Virginia Juanita Medina Murrieta, age 68, a homemaker, an outstanding mother, and a resident of Lazear for seven years, died on Saturday, March 4, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Virginia Juanita Rubalcaba, the daughter of Margarito and Ysabellita (Archuleta) Rubalcaba, was born on Jan. 27, 1932, in Austin, Colo. She spent her childhood in Austin, Eckert, and Olathe.

Virginia married Jose Benedicto Medina. She lost her husband to death on Dec. 16, 1963, in Montrose.

On Oct. 31, 1984, Virginia married Fortino Murrieta in Montrose. They would have shared 16 loving years of marriage this year in October.

The Murrietas moved from Olathe to Lazear seven years ago where Virginia made her home until the time of her death.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta.

Virginia treasured and deeply loved her family and her grandchildren. She found happiness and satisfaction in gardening, crocheting, cooking, and enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in sports.

Survivors so very grateful to share Virginia's life are her husband, Fortino Murrieta, of Lazear; three sons: Benjamin R. Medina and Leandro B. Medina, both of Rockford, Ill.; Jose B. Medina, of Olathe; four daughters: Rose Villalobos, of Rockford, Ill.; Ruby Loya, of Thornton; and Teresa Garcia and Cindy Medina, both of Olathe.

Virginia was the proud and loving grandmother of 21 grandchildren, and the great-grandmother of nine great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include three brothers: Wilfred Rubalcaba, of Delta; Ralph Rubalcaba and Paul Rubalcaba, both of Olathe; and five sisters: Celia Valdez, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Florence Arrellano, of Denver; Anne Aragon, of Montrose; Margaret Valdez, of Delta; and Isabel Aragon, also of Salt Lake City, Utah.

In addition to her parents and first husband, Jose Benedicto Medina, Virginia was also preceded in death by one brother, Frank Rubalcaba; and three children who died in infancy.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service at Delta.

Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Delta.

Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Virginia's life will be officiated by The Rev. Mark Bettinger on Wednesday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery at Olathe, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.

Neil Russell Hammond

World War II Veteran

June 19, 1926 March 3, 2000

GRAND JUNCTION - Former Montrose resident, Neil Russell Hammond, age 73, of Grand Junction, died on Friday, March 3, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital & Medical Center at Grand Junction.

Neil Russell Hammond, the son of Charles and Berta Hope (Smith) Foster, was born on June 19, 1926, in Montrose, Colo., where he spent his childhood, graduated from the Montrose County High School, and grew to adulthood. He continued to pursue his education and graduated from the Denver University and then proudly served his country in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.

Neil married Gilberdean R. Wallis on Dec. 12, 1948, in Montrose, Colo. They were the parents of three children and were privileged to share 51 loving years of marriage last year in June.

Prior to his retirement, Neil was employed with the I.R.S. and was a tax accountant.

The love, joy, and absolute delight of Neil's life were his family, friends, clients, and golfing.

Survivors so very grateful to share Neil's life are his wife, Gilberdean R. Hammond, of Grand Junction; one son, Dr. Scott John Hammond and wife Cheree, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and two daughters: Neila Ray and husband Floyd R. Dial, of Parker; and Becky Gayle and husband Dr. Paul M. Lanzisera, of Colorado Springs.

Neil was the proud and loving grandfather of five grandchildren: Travis Dial, Tabitha Dial, Nicholas Lanzisera, Adriana Hammond, and Neil Hammond.

Other family survivors include one brother, Richard Hammond, of Denver.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Neil's life will be officiated by The Rev. A.J. Bertrand on Friday, March 10, at 10 a.m. in the Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Chapel at Grand Junction.

Interment will be held on Friday, March 10, at 2:30 p.m. in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose.

Duane Clark Gatherer

Retired Timber Industry Manager

July 31, 1939 Feb. 29, 2000

MONTROSE - Duane Clark Gatherer, age 60, an avid hunter who retired from Blue Mesa Forest Products, and a resident of Montrose since 1985, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 29, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital & Regional Medical Center at Grand Junction.

Duane Clark Gatherer was born in Wallace, Idaho, on July 31, 1939, the son of Saul and Katie (Clark) Gatherer. He spent his childhood in Oregon where he graduated from high school in Portland, Ore. He continued his education by going to college in Oregon, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from Oregon State and earned a second Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon in Forestry Management.

Duane married Beverlee Howard on Nov. 22, 1969, in Portland, Ore. The couple were the parents of two children and were privileged to share 30 years of marriage last year in November.

After completing his education, Duane was first associated with Brooks-Scanlin Lumber Company in Bend, Ore., from 1964 until 1971. He then moved to Redding, Calif., and was later associated with Kibab Industries in Payson, Ariz. In 1981, the Gatherer family moved to White Sulphur Springs, Mont., where they remained until 1985 when Duane and his family moved to Montrose with Blue Mesa Forest Products where he was employed until his health forced his retirement in 1989. Duane had spent his entire career in forest and lumber production management in the Western United States.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the National Rifle Association, and was a former longtime member of the Elks Lodge.

Duane had many loves in his life that brought him so much happiness, satisfaction, and pleasure with his greatest loves being his family and being outdoors hunting. He hunted in British Columbia, the Yukon, Canada, and Oregon including areas throughout Western Colorado. He enjoyed fishing and raising horses and lived in a location that allowed him to keep his horses at home. He especially enjoyed riding in the West Elk Wilderness Area.

Survivors so grateful to share Duane's life are his wife, Beverlee Gatherer, of Montrose; one son, Kelly Roper and wife Amber, of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; one daughter, Janelle and husband Jose Figueroa, of Payson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Richard Gatherer, of Klickitat, Wash.; and one sister, Kerry Stevenson, of Portland, Ore.

Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Duane's life will be held this summer in the Colorado mountains.

Memorial contributions, in memory of Duane, may be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for habitat development or to the American Red Cross.

Donna L. Cyriacks

Retired Delta Teacher

March 4, 1927 March 3, 2000

DELTA - Retired Delta school teacher, Donna L. Cyriacks, age 72, a resident of Delta since 1964, died on Friday, March 3, 2000, at Integrated Health Services in Delta the day before her 73rd birthday.

Donna L. Phillips was born in Hot Springs, S.D., on March 4, 1927, the daughter of William and Clara (Ewen) Phillips. She grew up in Chadron, Neb., where she graduated from Chadron High School and grew to adulthood. She continued to pursue her education at Chadron State College in Chadron, graduating in 1949.

Donna married Clifford E. Cyriacks on Oct. 1, 1950, in Chadron, Neb. They were the parents of one son.

In 1953, she moved to Sterling, Colo., and lived there until moving to St. Paul, Neb., in 1959. Donna taught school in Cherry County while living there, moving to Grand Island, Neb., in 1961. She then moved to Delta, Colo., in 1964 where she made her home until the time of her death.

Prior to her retirement on Jan. 7, 1987, Donna was employed as a junior high teacher for School District 50, Delta County, Colo., for 21 years.

She was a member of the Delta Presbyterian Church, Delta Eastern Star, and had belonged to various education organizations when she was a school teacher.

The joy, delight, and love of Donna's life was her family, rose gardening, and reading.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey A. Cyriacks and wife Sharon, of Grand Junction.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; and her parents, William J. and Clara Alberta (Ewen) Phillips.

Private Family Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Donna's life will be held at a later date in Delta.

Eileen E. Benson

Retired Musician, Music Teacher

June 22, 1927 March 4, 2000

MONTROSE - Eileen E. Benson, age 72, a resident of Montrose for three years, died on Saturday, March 4, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.

Eileen E. Benson, the daughter of Clarence and Urgel (Amnent) Benson, was born on June 22, 1927, on Cedar Mesa at Cedaredge, Colo., where she spent her childhood, graduated from the Cedaredge High School in 1945, and grew to adulthood. She continued her education at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.

Eileen lived in Reno, Nev., for 20 years before moving to Delta where she remained for over 20 years. Three years ago, she moved to Montrose where she made her home until the time of her death.

Prior to her retirement, Eileen was a musician and a music teacher.

She attended the First Baptist Church of Delta.

Eileen will be remembered for her many fabulous talents as she was an accomplished musician, artist, and seamstress.

Survivors so very grateful to share Eileen's life are one son, Ronald E. Wagner, of Arizona; one daughter, Lynne E. Wagner, of Delta; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include three brothers: Byron Benson and Avon Benson, both of Delta; Mike Benson and wife Edna, of Austin, Colo.; and two sisters: Mary Ellen and husband Jim Broadwell, of Johnstown; and Cheryl Ann Benson, of Delta.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Karen Wagner.

Graveside Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Eileen's life will be officiated by Dr. Mike Benson and Michael Benson on Wednesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. in the Delta City Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.

Gerald J. Glanville

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather

Sept. 12, 1929 March 2, 2000

MONTROSE - Gerald J. Glanville, age 70, a resident of Montrose since 1993, died Thursday evening, March 2, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital. He will be lovingly remembered as being the most unselfish man and no matter how busy he was, he always had time to say "Hello" to everyone.

Gerald J. Glanville, the son of John and Nelda (Gosso) Glanville, was born on Sept. 12, 1929, in Silverton, Colo., where he spent his childhood, graduated from the Silverton High School in 1947, and grew to adulthood. He then continued his education at a one-year refrigeration school in Denver.

Gerald married Ermney Wilson on Nov. 10, 1950, in Aztec, N.M. They were the parents of two children and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year in November.

During the Korean Conflict, Gerald proudly served his country in the United States Army.

His first job out of college was as a heavy equipment operator for the county. Then he worked for a mine as the hoist man. Prior to his retirement, Gerald was in partnership with his wife managing and operating a janitorial contract service.

The Glanvilles lived in Silverton until moving to Montrose in 1993 where Gerald made his home until the time of his death.

Among Gerald's many loves in life that brought him much happiness and pleasure were working on his computer and photography. He especially enjoyed the mountains and off-road jeeping.

Survivors very grateful to share Gerald's life are his wife, Ermney Glanville, of Montrose; one daughter, Jerri and husband Robert Bradley, of Montrose; and two precious grandchildren: Lynna and Jeremy Bradley.

Other family survivors include numerous cousins including two first cousins: Wallace Parcell and wife Catherine, of Golden; and Clyde Grapp, of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nelda Glanville; and one son, John.

At Gerald's request, cremation has taken place with no service planned at this time.

Janice Eilene Walker

A 'Domestic Engineer'

Feb 17, 1943 March 5, 2000

MONTROSE - Janice Eilene Walker, age 57, a resident of Montrose for three years, died Sunday morning, March 5, 2000, from injuries she received in an automobile accident five miles south of Telluride. Janice was a homemaker, but was also active outside the home. She called herself a "domestic engineer."

Janice Eilene Tompkins was born in Pekin, Ill., on Feb. 17, 1943, the daughter of John Q. and Florence (Gardner) Tompkins. She was raised in Pekin, Ill., except for a short time in her early high school years when she lived in Battle Mountain, Nev.

Janice married John Walker Sr. on May 15, 1960, in Pekin, Ill. Janice and John were the parents of two sons and would have shared 40 loving years of marriage this year in May.

The Walker family lived in University Park, Ill., for 24 years before moving to Montrose three years ago, where Janice made her home until the time of her death.

She was a member of the Menoken Christian Church north of Montrose.

Janice was such a caring person always concerned for everyone's well being and constantly assisting and helping. She loved cats and greatly enjoyed art and music, and was a natural at landscaping and decorating.

Survivors so very grateful to share Janice's life are her husband, John Walker Sr., of Montrose; two sons: John Walker Jr. and wife Rosey; Jason Walker and wife Michelle, all of Montrose; and her mother, Florence Beck, of Green Valley, Ill.

Janice was the proud and loving grandmother of three precious grandchildren: Alicia Walker, Joshua Walker, and Nicholas Walker, all of Montrose.

Other family survivors include one brother, Joey Goodman, of Bloomington, Ill.; and three sisters: Lucille Martin, of Delavan, Ill.; Dorothy Mularoni, of Pekin, Ill.; and Linda Travis, of Hopedale, Ill.

Janice was preceded in death by her father, John Q. Tompkins; one brother, John Quincy Tompkins II; and one infant brother.

Public visitation is scheduled for Friday, March 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Janice's life will be officiated by Pastor Allen Miller on Saturday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the Menoken Christian Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Menoken Christian Church, "The Steeple Fund," In Memory of Janice Walker, P.O. Box 420, Olathe, CO 81425, to construct a steeple for the church.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose; (970) 249-2121.

Ronald Synnes Nelson

Korean, Vietnam Veteran

Jan. 3, 1928 - March 6, 2000

PAONIA - Retired U.S. Air Force veteran, Ronald Synnes Nelson, age 72, a resident of Paonia for six years, died on Monday, March 6, 2000, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Grand Junction.

Born on Jan. 3, 1928, in Portland, Ore., Ronald Synnes Nelson was the son of Lars and Selma (Larsen) Nelson.

Ronald proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950 until his retirement in 1974. While in the U.S. Air Force, he served in the Korean Conflict and three tours of duty during the Vietnam War.

He married Donna Lou House on July 1, 1954, in Denver, Colo. Donna preceded Ronald in death.

He lived in the Texas, Washington, and the Denver Metro area before moving to Paonia six years ago where he made his home until the time of his death.

Ronald belonged to the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge No. 1807, the Paonia American Legion Post No. 97, and was also a member of the Scottish Rite of the Masonic Lodge.

He enjoyed television, VCRs and various other electronic devices. Ronald also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and going to dinner on Friday nights at the American Legion Hall in Paonia.

Survivors very grateful to share Ronald's life are two daughters: Terry Nelson, of Moraga, Calif.; Linda Escamilla, of Port Orchard, Wash.; one stepson, Michael Brackeen, of Bowie; and two precious grandsons: Ronald Health, of Austin, Texas; and Ian Smith, of Moraga, Calif.

In addition to his wife, Donna, Ronald was also preceded in death by his father, Lars Nelson; and his mother, Selma (Larsen) Nelson.

No services are planned at this time.
