Jane Marie Chamberlain
Teacher, Artist, Loving Mother
July 29, 1938 - Sept. 27, 2000
MONTROSE - Jane Marie Chamberlain, age 62, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 27, 2000, at her home in Montrose.
Jane Marie Lauer, the daughter of Robert John and Marie (Eichhorn) Lauer, was born on July 29, 1938, in Detroit, Mich. She grew up in Royal Oak and Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and attended college at the University of Michigan. She was a Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Elementary Education and taught school in Ann Arbor, Mich.
In February of 1962, Jane married Thomas John Chamberlain at Royal Oak, Mich., and they lived in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Denver, Colo., before moving to Montrose.
As an artist, Jane was skilled in stained glass, sand painting and silk screening. Many of her glass art pieces can be found in homes and businesses in Montrose and Telluride. As a musician, she was skilled in piano, guitar and voice. She was past president and assistant director of the Sweet Adelines and sang in a popular quartet. She was also a community activist serving on the school board, golf board and was past president of the Medical Society Alliance.
In 1985, Jane resurrected the Montrose Arts Council which had become inactive for several years and served as its president for many years. She was active in the Magic Circle Players both behind the scenes and on stage. Other interests were golf, gardening, and tap dancing. Jane's passion, however, was her family and she was a loving mother, devoted to her husband and two sons.
Survivors very grateful to share Jane's life include her husband, Dr. Thomas John Chamberlain; two sons: Thomas Robert Chamberlain and wife Debby, all of Montrose; Barry Walter Chamberlain and wife Susan; and one precious grandchild, Ryan James Chamberlain, all of Grand Junction.
Other family survivors include one brother, Robert Joseph Lauer and wife Mary, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
A Memorial Service for Jane's family and close friends will be held Monday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Max Joseph Gilchrist
Loved God, People
Oct. 13, 1935 - Sept.25, 2000
OLATHE - Max Joseph Gilchrist, age 64, died Monday evening, Sept. 25, 2000, in the Integrated Health Services at Delta.
Max Joseph Gilchrist, the son of Lee J. and Edna D. (O'Dell) Gilchrist, was born on Oct. 13, 1935, in Shelton, Wash.
Max had been a resident of Colorado since 1965. He lived in Grand Junction prior to moving to Montrose in 1977.
He married his sweetheart, Treva Weidman, on July 13, 1979.
As a resident of Montrose and Olathe, Max was an active member of both communities. He was a member and acolyte of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Montrose for many years.
Max was employed with Silver Mountain Enterprises since 1983.
He was well known and well loved in the community. He loved helping people and making new friends. Max never knew a stranger, only friends he hadn't met.
He was an athlete and had won several silver and gold medals in the Special Olympics. In May of 1997, he was a Special Olympic Torchbearer as the Olympic Torch made its way through Montrose and Colorado. Max loved being outdoors, fishing, and walking. He liked horses and dancing. Most of all, Max loved God and people. Those who had the privilege of knowing Max, and whose lives were deeply affected by his unconditional love and gentleness, will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Treva Gilchrist, of Olathe.
Max was preceded in death by both of his parents and one sister, Florence Benninger.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home, using the front entrance, and also on Friday, Sept. 29, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Montrose.
Funeral Services to celebrate and honor Max's life will be officiated by The Rev. Tom Belt on Friday, Sept. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Montrose.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose; (970) 249-2121.
Cleo V. Harrison
Believed Deeply in Education
Aug. 15, 1918 - Sept. 26, 2000
MONTROSE - Cleo V. Harrison, age 82, of Montrose, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 26, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.
Cleo V. Veo was born at Cimarron, Colo. on Aug. 15, 1918, the daughter of Dutch Veo and Harriett (Truesdale) Veo. She spent her childhood years at Cimarron and graduated from the Montrose County High School with the class of 1936.
Cleo was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Fred W. Harrison on Oct. 22, 1937, in Montrose, Colo. After their marriage, Fred and Cleo lived in Telluride during World War II. Later they moved back to Montrose and became part of the Riverside community.
Cleo was employed as a cook at the Riverside and Uncompahgre Elementary Schools, country schools near Montrose, for a number of years. She was later employed as manager of the Montrose Memorial Hospital kitchen.
She was a member of the Quilters Club of Montrose for many years. Cleo won many blue ribbons for her beautiful quilts at the Montrose County Fair year after year.
One of Cleo's great loves in life was gardening and growing flowers. She loved to visit with her family and friends, go fishing with Fred and their children, and picnic in the mountains. Cleo loved children and believed deeply in education. She spent her retirement years working in classrooms throughout the school district as well as helping with clerical work in the Montrose County School District Central Office.
Cleo was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years on Jan. 24, 1994, in Montrose.
Survivors grateful to share Cleo's life include two sons: Harold Harrison and wife Barbara, of Las Cruces, N.M.; Larry Harrison and wife Linda, of Greeley; and one daughter, Bonnie and husband Russell Stone, of Montrose.
Cleo was the proud and loving grandmother of five precious grandchildren: Lisa McKee, Tammy Kokes, Lonnie Harrison, Tracy Gross, Lance Harrison; and four great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one brother, Leo "Buck" Veo; and one sister, Harriett Harrison, both of Montrose.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Fred, Cleo was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Cleo's life will be officiated by Joe Brummitt on Friday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Grand View Cemetery
west of Montrose.

John Robert 'Bob' Hill
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather

GRAND JUNCTION - Former longtime Olathe resident, farmer, and businessman, John Robert "Bob" Hill, age 79, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in his home at Grand Junction.
John Robert Hill was born in Olathe, Colo., on Oct. 2, 1920, the son of John Arndt and Gertrude (Back) Hill. He spent his childhood in Olathe, graduated from the Olathe High School with the class of 1938, and also from Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction in 1940.
Bob was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Dorothy Ann Warner on Jan. 31, 1943.
In March of 1943, he was called into the United States Army Air Corps where he proudly served his country as a pilot during World War II. Bob was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal.
After completing his military service, Bob returned to Olathe where he owned and operated the Olathe Market, farmed, then later managed the Olathe Potato Growers Coop. Bob retired from Hertz Auto Sales in Grand Junction.
While living in Olathe, Bob served on the volunteer fire department, school board, Olathe Town Council, and Montrose Memorial Hospital Board. He served in different positions in the First Assembly of God Church. He especially enjoyed sponsoring youth groups and working with young people.
Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as being an outgoing man who enjoyed meeting people and making friends.
Survivors very grateful to share Bob's life include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Hill; two sons: Jerry Hill and wife Dora, all of Grand Junction; Edward "Ted" Hill and wife Cindy, of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters: Judith Comstock, of Westminster; JoLynn and husband Santiago Plata, of Bangkok, Thailand; and seven grandchildren who Bob cherished.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Jean Stephens, of Lindale, Texas; and Edna Hill, of Delta.
In addition to his parents, Bob was also preceded in death by three sisters: Amber Lilly, Virginia Hill, Olive Hill; and one son-in-law, Lee Comstock.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to celebrate and honor Bob's life will be officiated by The Rev. Phil Neely on Friday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 4th and Grand, in Grand Junction.
Interment will follow the service in the Olathe Cemetery
at Olathe about 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob's memory may be made to: Grand Valley Hospice or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mickey Hampton
'A True Outdoorsman'
April 12, 1922 - Sept. 25, 2000
MONTROSE - Mickey Hampton, age 78, of Montrose, died Monday evening, Sept. 25, 2000, in the Montrose Memorial Hospital.
Mickey Hampton was born at Big Cimarron, Colo., on April 12, 1922, the son of T.A. Hampton and Alma Jane (Wolfe) Hampton. He was one of 10 children born to T.A. and Alma. Mickey spent his childhood in the Cimarron area and Montrose.
He lived most of his adulthood in the Ridgway area where he was a self-employed welding fabricator and a professional irrigator for many of the Ridgway area ranches.
Mickey was a true outdoorsman in every sense of the word. Among the many loves in his life that brought him happiness and contentment were playing the guitar, harmonica, and the Jew's Harp as well as singing. His death has left an unwanted emptiness in the lives of all who knew and love him. Mickey will be greatly missed.
Survivors include four brothers and their families: Wade Hampton, of Delta; Lloyd Hampton, of Montrose; Robert Hampton and wife Phyllis; Dale Hampton, all of Carlin, Nev.; and three sisters and their families: Virginia Childs, of Montrose; Alice and husband Audie Smith; and Patricia Niess, all of Grand Junction.
Mickey was preceded in death by both of his parents and two sisters.
A Private Family Memorial Service to honor Mickey's life will be held at a later date.

Dorothy Ellen Peterson
Enjoyed Her Family

DELTA - Dorothy Ellen Peterson, age 92, a homemaker and a resident of Delta County most of her life, died on Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.
Dorothy Ellen Holman, the daughter of Ronald and Mable (Purdy) Holman, was born on Oct. 14, 1907, in Paonia, Colo. She graduated from Hotchkiss High School with the class of 1926.
Dorothy was joined in marriage to Francis M. "Pete" Peterson on July 7, 1930, in Paonia. Pete preceded his wife in death in October of 1977.
She was a member of the Methodist faith and belonged to the Get Together Club and was active in the Jane Jeffersons.
Dorothy was a homemaker who greatly enjoyed her family, traveling, gardening, and reading.
Survivors very grateful to share Dorothy's life include one daughter, Patricia and husband Glen Beil, of Delta; four precious grandchildren: Kathy Mowat, of Fort Collins; Brian Beil, of Phoenix, Ariz.; David Beil, of Delta; Stan Beil, of Parker; and four great-grandchildren.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, Pete, Dorothy was also preceded in death by three brothers: Wayland, Donald, Edmond "Hap"; and one sister, Elberta.
Graveside Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Dorothy's life will be officiated by Pastor Judi Taylor on Friday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. in the Riverside Cemetery
at Hotchkiss.

Nan Kay Champlin
Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Friend

MONTROSE - Nan Kay Champlin, age 54, of Montrose, died Sunday morning, Sept. 24, 2000, in her home at Montrose.
Nan Kay was born on Sept. 4, 1946, in Hugaton, Kan. She was adopted by Edgar McNew and Elizabeth "Joyce" (Englert) McNew. At a very young age, she moved with her family to Nucla, where she spent her early childhood days and received her elementary education. Later the McNew family moved to Ridgway, where Nan graduated from the Ridgway High School.
On July 4, 1965, Nan Kay McNew was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Edward "Ray" Champlin in Ridgway, Colo. The Champlin family relocated to Montrose in 1973. Nan and Ray were the parents of three children: Tony, Mike, and Tonya, and they were privileged to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary this year in July.
Montrose and the close surrounding area was Nan's world; she rarely traveled outside of it. She was full of life and everyone she met was a friend. Nan's joy and love of her life were her family, children, grandchildren .... and her "kids." For years Nan provided day care. She opened her home and shared her love with many children and thoroughly loved it. To them she was like a second Mom or Grandmom and they were "her kids."
Survivors include Nan's husband, Ray Champlin, of the family home in Montrose; two sons: Tony Champlin and wife Shannon; Mike Champlin and wife Kim; and one daughter, Tonya and husband Roger Johnson, all of Montrose.
Nan was the proud and loving grandmother of nine grandchildren: Tabitha, Brittany, Kevin, Matthew, Tyler, Dylan, Cody, Jeremy, and Joshua, all of Montrose.
She is also survived by her father, Edgar McNew, of Montrose; and one brother, Bill McNew and wife Linda, of Minnesota.
Nan was preceded in death by her grandparents and her mother, Elizabeth "Joyce" McNew, who passed away on Jan. 22, 1998 in Montrose.
Funeral Services and a celebration of Nan's life will be officiated by Pastor Greg Roby on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Montrose Christian Church.
Interment will follow the service in the Valley Lawns Cemetery
south of Montrose.

Madison E. "Dill" Dillingham
World War II Veteran
Sept. 24, 1917 - Sept. 21, 2000
MONTROSE - Madison E. "Dill" Dillingham, age 82, of Montrose, died Thursday evening, Sept. 21, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose, just three days before he would have celebrated his 83rd birthday.
Madison E. Dillingham, the son of Harvey D. and Minnie (Terry) Dillingham, was born on Sept. 24, 1917, in Farris, Okla. He spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adtulhood in Oklahoma.
During World War II, Dill proudly served his country in the United States Army in the African Theatre.
He married Alene Coleman on Nov. 9, 1947, in Las Vegas, Nev. Dill and Alene would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this year in November.
Prior to his retirement at the age of 60, Dill worked as a lineman for 30 years, installing powerlines all over the United States. He also spent four years in Brazil installing powerlines.
After he retired, Dill accomplished what he always wanted to do. He hunted, fished, and went coon hunting with his mule and coon dogs. He had a passion for water skiing and loved and lived life.
Survivors include his wife, Alene Dillingham, of the family home in Montrose; and one stepdaughter, Sandra Lierley, of Montrose.
He was the proud and loving grandfather of five grandchildren: David Lierley and wife Cathy, of Anchorage, Alaska; Diane Swingholm, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Merri Jo and husband Shanon Gardner, of Palisade; Sherry and husband Paul Burr, of Montrose; Mark Lierley, of Salt Lake City, Utah; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Dill was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Clarence and Robert Dillingham; and one sister, Jewel Walker.
Graveside Services to honor Dill's life will be conducted by an officiant of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. in the Darwin Cemetery
at Antlers, Okla.
