Oval Glendola McCance

Loved Flowers

March 4, 1912 - Sept. 22, 2000

MONTROSE - Oval Glendola McCance, age 88, a homemaker and resident of Montrose for 50 years, died Friday evening, Sept. 22, 2000, in the Valley Manor Care Center at Montrose.

Oval Glendola Anderson was born at Agra, Okla., on March 4, 1912, the daughter of Noah Wesley and Rebecca Jane (Snoddy) Anderson. She spent her childhood in that area and attended school in Chandler, Okla.

In 1930, Oval married Wilbur J. Horner and to their union two sons were born: James L. and William E. The marriage later ended in divorce. In 1952, she married E.R. "Mac" McCance in Aztec, N.M., who preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1982, in Montrose. Wilbur also preceded her in death.

Oval was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Holdenville, Okla., and, in recent years moved her membership to the Rosemont Baptist Church in Montrose.

She was active in the Grange for a number of years and was a member of the Royal Neighbors. Oval enjoyed many years of service in the Montrose Emblem Club, and was a past president of the club.

"Dolie," as she was known to many of her friends, loved flowers and she had beautiful flower beds wherever she lived.

Survivors very grateful to share Oval's life include two sons: James L. Horner and wife Marjorie, of Hot Springs, Ark.; William E. Horner and wife Janet, of Houston, Texas; five precious grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Along with her parents, her former husband, and husband, Mac, Oval was also preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Oval's life were officiated on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. in the Cedar Cemetery east of Montrose.

Memorial contributions in Oval's memory may be made to the Rosemont Baptist Church or Montrose Emblem Club.

Arrangements were handled under the direction of Montrose Valley Funeral Home; (970) 249-4400.

James B. Skiles

An Avid Gardener

Nov. 3, 1913 - Sept. 23, 2000

DELTA - James B. Skiles, age 86, of Delta, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital at Delta.

James B. Skiles, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Skiles, was born on Nov. 3, 1913, in Burns, Colo. He grew up on a ranch north of Burns. He moved to Grand Junction and later Olathe prior to moving to Delta 55 years ago where he made his home until the time of his death.

James married Edna May McMillan on Oct. 6, 1938, in Delta, Colo. They were the parents of three children and were privileged to share 53 years of marriage at the time of Edna's death on July 15, 1991.

Prior to his retirement, James worked as a ranch foreman and operated a gravel crusher for the Delta County Road Department for 20 years.

He was a member of the Delta Christian Church in Delta and was a former I.O.O.F. Lodge member.

James was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed giving away the produce from his garden. He also enjoyed fishing and caring for others.

Survivors very grateful to share James' life include two sons: Rolland Skiles, of Ridgecrest, Calif.; Marvin Skiles, of Delta; one daughter, Charlene Chamblin, of Delta; three precious grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Along with both of his parents and his wife, Edna, James was also preceded in death by one brother.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor James' life will be officiated by Pastor Howard Cowan on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.

Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery at Delta, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta; (970) 874-8633.

Lloyd Eugene Farrow

WW I, WW II Veteran

Oct. 6, 1900 - Sept. 17, 2000

GRAND JUNCTION - Former longtime Montrose resident, Lloyd Eugene Farrow, age 99, of Grand Junction, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in the LaVilla Grande Care Center at Grand Junction.

Lloyd Eugene Farrow, the son of Henry and Dolly (Merchany) Farrow, was born on Oct. 6, 1900, at Midland, Texas, where he spent his early childhood years. He and his sister were orphaned at an early age.

At the age of 14, Lloyd entered the United States Army. He achieved the ran of Sergeant, training horses to patrol the Mexican-American border. He proudly served his country in both World War I and World War II in the medical corps. He received many medals including the Purple Heart Medal. Lloyd was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1943.

While serving in the Army, he received his Nursing degree. After the service, he was the administrator of a hospital in Springer, N.M.

In 1959, Lloyd moved to Montrose where he worked as a nurse and lab technician at the Montrose Memorial Hospital in the osteopathic department. He was an avid ham radio operator with his call numbers being WQINS. He drove a van for the senior citizens for three years, and served as a Montrose County Deputy Sheriff and Posse member for many years. In 1987, Lloyd moved from Montrose to Grand Junction where he remained until the time of his death.

Survivors very grateful to share Lloyd's life include his wife, Roberta Farrow, who lovingly cared for him for 15 years; three stepchildren: Debbie and husband Dale Clifton; Dena and husband Paul Ashcraft, all of Grand Junction; Susan Maralda, of Glendale, Ariz.; and six stepgrandchildren.

Lloyd was preceded in death by both of his parents; one sister, Lucille Harvey; and his previous wives: Ellen Farrow and Fern Farrow.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Michael Dean Hrabe

Loved the Outdoors

July 20, 1957 - Sept. 17, 2000

DEBEQUE - Michael Dean Hrabe, age 43, of DeBeque, died of injuries he received in a car accident on Sunday, Sept. 17, in rural Mesa County.

Michael Dean Hrabe was born in Delta, Colo., on July 20, 1957, the son of Kenneth and Geraldine (Holtgren) Hrabe. He spent his childhood and attended school in Uravan and Naturita.

Michael lived the last four years in DeBeque having previously lived in Rifle and Delta.

He was joined in marriage to Sharon Rice on Dec. 7, 1999, in Basalt, Colo.

Michael was employed as a steel fabricator and yardman with Myers Company for the past eight years.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Michael's special interests in life that brought him happiness and contentment were hunting and fishing, and he especially loved the outdoors. His family said he was a very special person in the life of his family.

Survivors very grateful to share Michael's life include his wife, Sharon Hrabe, of DeBeque; one son, Troy, of Rifle; his mother, Gerri Hrabe, of Delta; two stepsons: James and Harry D. Guisinger, both of Hillsboro, Ohio; two stepdaughters: Lisa Bajek, of Glenwood Springs; Anita Guisinger, of Rifle; one grandchild and six stepgrandchildren.

Other family survivors include three brothers: Alan Hrabe, of Montrose; David Hrabe, of Rifle; Gerald Hrabe, of Longmont; his grandparents: Jack and Gladys Penland, of Hotchkiss; as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Hrabe; one brother, Kevin Hrabe; and his grandmother, Beulah Oosterhous.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Michael's life will be officiated on Friday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.

Olive Hughes

Loved Her Animals

Nov. 20, 1926 - Sept. 22, 2000

CRAWFORD - Former Texas resident, Olive Hughes, age 73, a homemaker and resident of Crawford for one year, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, in her home at Crawford.

Olive Hall was born in Carter, Ky., on Nov. 20, 1926, the daughter of Benjamin F. Hall and Nora (Davis) Hall. She spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood in Carter.

Olive was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Harold Francis Hughes on Nov. 28, 1956, in Reno, Nev. They were the parents of five daughters and had shared 34 years together at the time of Harold's death on July 5, 1990.

Olive lived in Texas for 10 years prior to moving to Crawford a year ago where she remained until the time of her death.

Olive loved her animals: Chickens, rabbits, and especially enjoyed raising their babies. She also loved country music.

Survivors very grateful to share Olive's life include four daughters: Nora and husband Walt Smith, of Stockton, Calif.; Kathy and husband John Collins, of Aspermont, Texas; Lucille Harlan, of Hotchkiss; and Regina and husband Frank Van Meter, of Crawford.

Olive was the proud and loving grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include two brothers: William Hall, of Crawford; Jake Hall and wife Wanda, of South Dakota; and four sisters: Georgie Parker, of Ohio; Thelma and husband Jim Durham, of California; Susie Pribble, of Wisconsin; and Diane and husband Virgil Myers, of California.

In addition to both of her parents and her husband, Harold; Olive was also preceded in death by one daughter, Christine Damon; three brothers; one sister; and one grandson.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Olive's life will be officiated by Dan Daniels on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel at Hotchkiss.

Interment will follow the service in the Garden of Memories Cemetery at Crawford, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Services, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.

Herbert Dayton Miller

City Market Produce Manager

April 20, 1930 - Sept. 15, 2000

CORTEZ - Herbert Dayton Miller, the son of Clyde and Irene (DeHaas) Miller, was born on April 20, 1930, in Denver, Colo. He went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., at the age of 70.

Herb was loved dearly and many remember him from when he was employed as the produce manager with City Market.

He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Cortez. He gave of his time to help keep the grounds of the church looking beautiful. He also belonged to the Gideon Bible Society.

Herb found happiness and contentment in fishing, gardening, watching sports, and spending time with his grandsons whom he dearly loved. He was a true Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos fan.

Those who knew and loved Herb know just how fortunate they were to have him touch their lives. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors very grateful to share Herb's life include his bride of 51 years, Bettie (Nichols) Miller, of Cortez; one son, Rick Miller and wife Patti, of Wheaton, Ill.; one daughter, Candace and husband Tommy Tidwell, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; and his five precious grandsons: Zack and Cody Tidwell, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; and Ryan, Brad, and Colin Miller, of Wheaton, Ill.

Other family survivors include three brothers: Clyde Miller and wife Esther; James Miller, all of Montrose; Luther Miller and wife Lucy, of Olathe; three sisters: Margaret Brown, of Montrose; Laura and husband Alan Zeigel, of Denver; Virginia and husband Ron Luttrell, of Greeley; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel, 42 N. Market St., in Cortez.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Herb's life will be officiated by Pastor Dan Rhodes on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cortez.

Interment will follow the service in the Cortez Cemetery.

Otis James Morris

Korean Conflict Veteran

Sept. 25, 1933 - Sept. 21, 2000

DELTA - Otis James Morris, age 66, formerly of Delta, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, in the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Rifle, just four days before he would have celebrated his 67th birthday.

Otis James Morris, the son of Vinal and Nina (Hager) Morris, was born on Sept. 25, 1933, in Alva, Okla. He graduated from school in Las Vegas, Nev.

During the Korean Conflict, Otis proudly served his country in the United States Army stationed in Germany, achieving the rank of Private.

After his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, he worked on the Hoover Dam in Nevada and then worked as a dredge helper dredging the Colorado River. When arthritis forced his retirement he moved to Burley, Idaho, and lived there until the spring of 1959 when he moved to Delta where he remained until moving to Rifle where he lived until the time of his death.

Otis never married.

He loved to travel, especially to visit his relatives.

Survivors very grateful to share Otis' life include three brothers: Levine Morris, of Montrose; Gene O. Morris, of Smartsville, Calif.; Leo N. Morris, of Healdton, Okla.; and one sister, Elvina P. Gourley, of Sheridan, Ore.

Otis was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Graveside Funeral Services will be officiated on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. in the Mesa View Cemetery at Delta.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of the Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta.

Luethella Rachel Ryan

Greatest Love: Children, Grandchildren

June 26, 1917 - Sept. 19, 2000

DELTA - Luethella Rachel Ryan, age 83, of Delta, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in the Colorow Care Center at Olathe.

Born on June 26, 1917, in Reno County, Kan., Luethella Rachel Cole was the daughter of Arvy and Alta (Trickel) Cole. She attended grade school at Fairview and high school in Delta.

Luethella married James Walter Ryan on Dec. 23, 1933, in Montrose, Colo. They were the parents of three children.

Luethella lived in Delta for 65 years and was employed as a cook for Delta High School for 16 years.

In life, Luethella's greatest love was her children and grandchildren. She found enjoyment and satisfaction in crocheting, playing the piano, gardening, and cooking wonderful meals for her family.

Survivors very grateful to share Luethella's life include two sons: Walter Ross Ryan and wife Betty, of Delta; Arvy Franklin "Bert" Ryan and wife Arlene, of Clifton; and one daughter, Alice Marie Wilson, of Montrose.

Luethella was the proud and loving grandmother of six grandsons, three granddaughters, 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Fred H. Cole and wife Peggy, of Eckert; and one sister, Jesse Mae and husband Everett Doyle, of Eckert.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, James; and one brother, George Cole.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery in Delta.

Graveside Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Luethella's life will be officiated on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. in the Cedaredge Cemetery.

Allen James Sillman

Retired Electrician

Feb. 8, 1953 - Sept. 17, 2000

DELTA - Allen James Sillman, age 47, of Delta, died on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in the Delta County Memorial Hospital.

Allen James Sillman, the son of Joe S. Jones Sr. and Virginia (Denny) Jones, was born on Feb. 8, 1953, in Spokane, Wash.

Allen's marriage ended in divorce.

He lived in San Diego, Calif., for four years before moving to Delta where he made his home until the time of his death.

Allen was a retired electrician.

He was a member of the Church of Christ of Cedaredge and loved and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include two sons: Jason Sillman, of Bakersfield, Calif.; Christian Sillman, of Maine; one daughter, Jodie Sillman, also of Bakersfield,Calif.; and one grandchild.

Other family survivors include his father, Joe S. Jones Sr., of LaMesa,Calif.; one brother, Joe S. Jones Jr., of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; and two sisters: Vanessa Jones and Trina Grove, both of Poway, Calif.

Allen was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Jones.

Graveside Services in loving remembrance and to honor Allen's life were officiated by Eddie Wilkerson on Friday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 a.m. in the Mesa View Cemetery at Delta.
