Lester Charles Jones

World War II Veteran

Oct. 24, 1926 - Oct. 21, 2000

DELTA - Lester Charles Jones, age 73, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at his home in Delta just three days before he would have celebrated his 74th birthday.

Lester Charles Jones was born in Westcliffe, Colo., on Oct. 24, 1926, the son of Joseph and Lillian (Wagner) Jones. He graduated from the Walsenburg High School in Walsenburg, Colo.

During World War II, Lester proudly served his country in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Seaman First Class.

He married Norma Esther Olbert on May 1, 1948, in Thompson Park, Colo. In 1963, Lester and Norma moved from Buena Vista to Delta.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as one of the original correctional officers of the Delta Correctional facility, retiring after 27 years of service.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Redeemer of Delta and the Friday Morning Coffee Club.

In life, Lester enjoyed cribbage, pinochle, a turn at the slot machine, sightseeing and traveling, and restoring antique furniture. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an excellent tracker.

Survivors very grateful to share Lester's life include two sons: Ralph Jones, of Colorado; Ronald Jones, of Paonia; two daughters: Janelle and husband Danny Meng, of Raytown, Mo.; and Margie and husband Jack Nutter, of Montrose.

Lester was the proud and loving grandfather of four granddaughters: Melanie, Danielle, Suzanne, Cheryl and husband Mike; three grandsons: Shane, Loni, Michael; and one great-granddaughter, Nikayla.

Other family survivors include one sister, B. Darlene Smith, of Pueblo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; and one brother, Ralph Edward Jones.

Memorial Services in loving remembrance to honor Lester's life will be officiated by Pastor Marion Hofman on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m. at the Delta Lutheran Church of Redeemer. The service will conclude at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lutheran Church of Redeemer, In Memory of Lester Jones, 1000 Pioneer Rd., Delta, CO 81416.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Mesa View Mortuary-Cemetery of Delta; (970) 874-8633.

'Red' Alsdorf

Enjoyed Raising A Good Family

July 31, 1911 - Oct. 21, 2000

DELTA - Thon "Red" Alsdorf, age 89, a resident of Delta since 1945, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in the Delta Care Center at Delta.

Thon Alsdorf, the son of William and Zula (Morgan) Alsdorf, was born on July 31, 1911, in Hoxie, Kan. He spent his childhood in Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado.

Red was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, to Georgia Lenore Bunting on Oct. 6, 1936, in Greeley, Colo. Red and Georgia were the parents of five children and were privileged to have shared 58 wonderful years together at the time of Georgia's death on Feb. 23, 1995, in Delta.

During World War II, Red worked building airplanes for the Douglas Aircraft Company in the Los Angeles, Calif., area.

In 1945, Red and Georgia moved to Delta where Red worked for the Colorado State University Research Center. He later was employed with Fiegel's Farm Supply prior to working for Skyland Foods in Delta where he was a maintenance mechanic until his retirement.

Red was a member of the Delta Christian Church.

Among his many loves in life that brought him happiness and contentment were rock hunting, farming, driving around to see the sites, and raising a good family.

Survivors so very grateful to share Red's life include three sons: Forrest Alsdorf and wife Kay, of Delta; Milton Alsdorf and wife Garry Beth, of Elko, Nev.; Jay Alsdorf and wife Lori, of Delta; two daughters: Janet and husband Gene Hannigan, of Elko, Nev.; and Wilma and husband Kyle French, of Dayton, Ore.

Red was the proud and loving grandfather of 18 precious grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include one brother, Glenn Alsdorf, of Commerce City; and two sisters: Billie Beryl Ginest, of Garden City, Kan.; and Mary Murphy, of Flowery Branch, Ga.

Along with his parents and his wife, Georgia, Red was also preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Hann; and three brothers: Homer, Carrol, and Wayne Alsdorf.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Red's life will be officiated by Pastor Don Bavor on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Mesa View Mortuary Chapel in Delta.

Interment will follow the service in the Mesa View Cemetery at Delta.

John Elmer Morris

World War II Corporal

Dec. 6, 1925 - Oct. 24, 2000

DELTA - John Elmer Morris, age 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at his home in Delta. He was a Delta and Grand Junction area resident for 58 years.

John Elmer Morris, the son of John W. Morris and Jessie (Greer) Morris, was born on Dec. 6, 1925, in Webb, Okla. He spent his childhood in Webb Dewey County and Long Creek Community, Okla., and graduated from school at Long Creek in 1938.

During World War II, Elmer proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army.

He married Norma Lee Boyd who preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 1985, in Grand Junction. Elmer married Marian Arlene Lugard Markley on Nov. 20, 1987, in Delta, Colo. They had shared 12 years together at the time of Elmer's death.

Prior to his retirement in 1994, Elmer was employed for 13 years as a gate tender for the Grand Valley Water Users.

He was a member of the General Assembly & Church of the First Born of Delta, the American Legion Post No. 0050 of Palisade, and the National Rifle Association.

Among the many loves in Elmer's life that brought him happiness and contentment were his family, church, horses, livestock, hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling.

Survivors very grateful to share Elmer's life include his wife, Marian Arlene Lugard Markley Morris, of Delta; four sons: Gordon Morris and wife Elaine; Merl Morris and wife Linda, all of Grand Junction; Nolan Morris and wife Merlene, of Clifton; John Morris and wife Rhonda, of Vici, Okla.; one stepson, Bill Markley, also of Grand Junction; one daughter, Iva and husband Rick Jennings, of Welling, Okla.; and two stepdaughters: Vicki and husband David Shreeves; Luana and husband Dale Hansen, all of Delta.

Elmer was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Other family survivors include two brothers: Leroy Morris and wife Glenda, of Taloga, Okla.; Freddie Morris and wife Luella, of Vici, Okla.; and three sisters: Alma Boyd, of Palisade; Thelma and husband James Carey, of Atoka, Okla.; and Velma and husband Scott Lund, of Grand Junction.

Along with of his parents and his first wife, Norma, Elmer was also preceded in death by three brothers, one sister, and three grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Delta Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.

Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor Elmer's life will be officiated by Paul McGehee, Bob Byers, and Chuck Byers on Friday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Delta Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.

Interment will follow the service in the Pea Green Cemetery at Pea Green, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.

Frances Saunders

Creative Lady, Homemaker

March 26, 1920 - Oct. 26, 2000

OLATHE - Frances Saunders, age 80, of Olathe, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, in Carla's Retreat at Olathe.

Frances Anderson, the daughter of Jack Anderson and Ann (Long) Anderson, was born on March 26, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, where she spent her childhood, received her education, and grew to adulthood.

Frances married William Aldrich who preceded her in death in 1961. On July 5, 1965, she married Robert Saunders at Twin Lakes, Colo. Robert also preceded Frances in death.

Frances enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, sewing, doing interior decorating, and reupholstering furniture.

Survivors very grateful to share Frances' life include one son, Danny Aldrich and wife Kim, of Nucla; 10 precious grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joan Loiselle, of Newton, Iowa.

Along with her parents and both of her husbands, Frances was also preceded in death by one daugher, Sandy; and one son, Jim.

No services are planned at this time.

Dana Faye Woods

Allure Beauty Salon Manicurist

April 9, 1968 - Oct. 24, 2000

MONTROSE - Dana Faye Woods, age 32, a deeply loved wife, mother, and daughter, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 24, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital at Grand Junction.

Dana Faye Franks, the daughter of George Franks and Sandra (Parker) Franks, was born on April 9, 1968, in Ferriday, La. She spent her childhood at Larto Lake, La., where she graduated from high school and grew to adulthood. She continued her education at the Louisiana Business College in Vidalia, La., studying data entry. She later attended the Delta-Montrose Voc-Tech Center and completed the manicurist program.

Dana was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Kevin Woods on March 22, 1997, at the Grace Baptist Church in Montrose. Dana and Kevin shared three wonderful years of marriage this year in March.

Dana lived in Larto Lake and Vidalia, La., before moving to Montrose in 1989 where she remained until the time of her death.

She worked as a certified nurses assistant from 1989 to 1998 at the San Juan Living Center. She then took manicurist classes at the Delta-Montrose Voc-Tech Center. She was employed as a manicurist at the Allure Beauty Salon in Montrose.

Above all her other loves in life, Dana loved spending time with her family. She also loved and enjoyed traveling - especially to Las Vegas, Nev. - as well as having a great love for basketball and softball.

Although Dana only got to live 32 short years here on earth, she definitely left this world a better place because she was here. All those who knew and loved her know just how very fortunate they were to have her touch their lives. Her death has left a huge unwanted emptiness and she will be so deeply missed.

Survivors very grateful to share her life include her husband, Kevin Woods; and her 4-year-old daughter, Lindsey Taylor Franks, of the family home in Montrose.

Other family survivors include her parents, George and Sandra Franks; one brother, Lance Franks; one sister: Kristie and husband Tony Cooley and their son, Tyler Cooley; her grandparents, Norman and Callie Ryser, all of Montrose; James and Pearline Parker, of Natchez, Miss.; and her father- and mother-in-law, Larry and Eileen Phillips, of Olathe.

Dana was preceded in death by her Aunt Polly Ann Shiflet on Aug. 4, 2000.

Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Dana's life will be officiated by Minister Ronnie Hanna on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Montrose Valley Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.

Phyllis Stahl

Homemaker

May 7, 1923 - Oct. 28, 2000

HOTCHKISS - Phyllis Stahl, age 77, of Hotchkiss, died of natural causes on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000 at the Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta.

Phyllis Wiles, the daughter of George Archie Wiles and Mary Celeste Heywood Wiles, was born on May 7, 1923 in Centon Township, Mich.

She spent her childhood and received her education in Centon Township, Mich. She had lived in Hotchkiss since 1963.

Phyllis married Arthur Joe Stahl with the marriage later ending in divorce.

She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hotchkiss.

Phyllis was a homemaker and enjoyed reading and painting.

She is survived by two sons: Doug Stahl and wife Patty of Parachute, Colo. and David Stahl of Snowmass, Colo.; and one daughter, Mary Stahl of Hotchkiss; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Phyllis is also survived by her brother Henry Wiles of Ypsilanti, Mich. as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, two half-sisters and two half-brothers.

Funeral services to honor the life of Phyllis Stahl will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hotchkiss. The Rev. Randall Small will be officiating.

Internment will be held at Hotchkiss.

Memorial contributions in memory of Phyllis Stahl can be made in care of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc., 800 Palmer Street, Delta, Colo., 81416.

Lawrence H. Eldredge

Enjoyed Gardening

June 21, 1919 - Oct. 27, 2000

HOTCHKISS - Lawrence H. Eldredge, age 81, of Hotchkiss, died of natural causes on Friday, Oct. 27, 2000 of natural causes in the Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta.

Lawrence H. Eldredge, the son of James M. Eldredge and Ruth Osborn Eldredge, was born on June 21, 1919 in Durham County, Okla. He spent his childhood at Kellyville, Okla.

He married Bernice A. Clark on Dec. 29, 1947 in Davenport, Okla. She preceded Lawrence in death on Oct. 26, 1990 in Delta, Colo.

Prior to moving to Hotchkiss, Lawrence lived in Davenport, Okla.

Lawrence was a maintenance worker for the Turner Turnpike Authority in Oklahoma.

He especially enjoyed gardening.

Lawrence is survived by two sons: Earl Eldredge of Hotchkiss and Larry Eldredge of Paonia; two granddaughters, Celina Bearshears of Hotchkiss and Sara Ruth Eldredge of Paonia; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by one sister, Eva Eggelston of Howard, Colo.

In addition to his wife, Bernice, Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and a son Carl in 1967.

No services are scheduled at this time. Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Delight Elaine Pennell

DELTA - Delight Elaine Pennell, age 74, of Delta died on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction of natural causes.

Delight Elaine Buell, the daughter of Jack Buell and Lillian (Briggs) Buell, was born on July 31, 1926 in Libertyville, Ill. She spent her childhood at Libertyville and Barrington, Ill., graduating from Barrington High School.

Delight married Forrest Pennell on Feb. 15, 1946 in Arlington Heights, Ill.

She lived in Phoenix, Ariz. for many years, moving to Delta in 1992.

Delight was employed as a cashier and enjoyed crocheting, watching basketball (she had played basketball) and belonged to a bowling league.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Delight is survived by her husband, Forrest of Delta; one son, Darrell Pennell of Phoenix, Ariz.; five daughters, Mercedes E. Drake and Mary Ellen and husband Clifford Woods all of Phoenix, Ariz., Billie May Hardy of Farmington, N.M., Marsha Ann and husband Steve Sohriakoff of Indianapolis, Ind., Delight Pennell of Delta; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a brother, John Buell of Crystal Lake, Ill.

Delight was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jacqueline.

Funeral services to honor the life of Delight Elaine Pennell will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. The service will conclude at the chapel.
