Hobart Jay Knight
Retired Bank President
Sept. 17, 1936 - Feb. 9, 2001

SOMERSET - Hobart Jay Knight, age 64, of Somerset, retired president of the First National Bank in Paonia, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Erikson Springs, Colo.
Hobart Jay Knight, the son of Shyrl Knight and Esther (Townsend) Knight, was born on Sept. 17, 1936, in Paonia, Colo., where he spent his childhood years. Hobart graduated from high school at Friends Academy in Wichita, Kan., in 1954.
On July 31, 1955, he was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Lenora Williard in Wichita, Kan. Their lives together were blessed when they became the parents of three children. Hobart and Lenora had the joy of sharing 45 years of marriage last year in July.
In 1958, Hobart graduated from Friends University in Wichita, Kan., and in the 1960s he graduated from the Colorado School of Banking at Boulder.
The Knight family moved to the Paonia area in 1958, where Hobart made his home until the time of his death.
Prior to his retirement in the early 1990s, he was president of the First National Bank in Paonia.
Hobart was a member of Friends Church in Paonia, the Paonia Rotary, past president of the Delta County Telephone Cooperative, a member of the Friends University Board of Trustees in Wichita, Kan.; belonged to the Colorado Bankers Association, and served on several other boards throughout the area.
Hobart was a private pilot and an avid outdoor enthusiast. He greatly enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, training horses, and was a supporter of all the area athletics.
All who knew and loved Hobart know just how fortunate they were to have him touch their lives. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors very grateful to share Hobart's life include his wife, Lenora Knight, of Somerset; two sons: Dr. Denis Knight and wife Dawn, of Wichita, Kan.; Tom Knight and wife Kim, of Edmond, Okla.; one daughter, Jaylene and husband Stan Park, of Aspen; and nine precious grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Shirley and husband Chuck Quin, of Grand Junction; Mary Esther and husband Leland Wines, of Benicia, Calif.; his stepmother, Emma Knight, of Friendswood, Texas; one stepbrother, Wilmer Allman and wife Marie, of Freeport, Texas; and one stepsister, Carolyn and husband Ted Shafer, of Dallas, Texas.
Hobart was preceded in death by both of his parents.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance and to honor and celebrate Hobart's life will be officiated by Pastor Gaylen Kinser on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Friends Church in Paonia.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Paonia.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to: Friends Church, In Memory of Hobart Knight, P.O. Box 278, Paonia, CO 81428.
Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc., (970) 874-9988.

Clara Margaret Shearer
Beloved Mother of Three Children
April 19, 1910 - Feb. 8, 2001

PAONIA - Clara Margaret Shearer, age 90, a homemaker and a resident of Paonia nearly all of her lifetime, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in the Paonia Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Clara Margaret Cordray, the daughter of Milton Cordray and Viola (Cusic) Cordray, was born on April 19, 1910, in Lima, Colo. She spent her childhood years, received her education at the Stewart Mesa School, and lived the remainder of her lifetime in Paonia.
On Nov. 26, 1927, Clara was joined in marriage with Inelda "Ned" Shearer at Delta, Colo. Their lives were blessed when they became the parents of three children. Clara and Ned had the joy of sharing 43 years together before Ned's death on March 23, 1971.
Clara was a member of the Paonia Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and a past member of the LDS Relief Society, the Rebekah Lodge No. 77 of Paonia, and Paonia Eastern Star No. 74.
Survivors very grateful to share Clara's life include one son, Dwayne Ray Shearer and wife Twila, of Jensen, Utah; and two daughters: Betty Jean and husband Chester Wyckoff, of Lakeside, Calif.; and Glenna Marie Otterstrom, of Hurricane, Utah.
Clara was the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Along with both of her parents and husband, Ned, Clara was also preceded in death by four brothers: Ira, Earl, John and Orie; and one sister, Leatha Holybee.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Clara's life will be officiated by Bishop Brent Anderson on Monday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Paonia Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Interment will follow the service in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Paonia, with arrangements being handled under the direction of Taylor Funeral Service, Inc.; (970) 874-9988.

Telford Van Burean 'T.V.' Stradley
World War II Veteran
Jan. 27, 1923 - Feb. 8, 2001

GREELEY - Telford Van Buren "T.V." Stradley, age 78, of Greeley, died Thursday, Feb. 8, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado, inpatient unit, in Greeley.
Telford Van Buren Stradley, the son of Earl Isaac and Minnie Belle (Curtis) Stradley, was born on Jan. 27, 1923, in Greenwood, Neb.
During World War II, T.V. entered the military service where he proudly served his country as a nosegunner on a B-24 in Italy in the 461st group 15th Air Force in the United States Air Corp.
On June 21, 1945, T.V. was joined in marriage with Kathryn Marion Ruble in Boulder, Colo. Their lives together were blessed when they became the parents of five children.
T.V. graduated from the University of Colorado in 1953. He was a Civil Engineer, consulting privately and was employed with Ken R. White and Associates, R.W. Beck and Associates, and the Colorado-Ute Power Company.
T.V. designed power transmission projects, highways, runways and bridges throughout the United States and overseas.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, 461st Bomb Group, Roaming Buffaloes, Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society, Sigma Tau and Chi Epsilon Honor Fraternity.
Among his many loves in life that brought him happiness were fly tying, fly fishing, deer hunting, square dancing, reading, and Big-8 Football.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing T.V.'s life include two sons: Bernard Stradley, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Jonathan Stradley, of Montrose; and three daughters: Corinne McGowen, of Santa Fe, N.M.; Caroline Rincon, of Ault; and Melanie Durham, of Valdez, Alaska.
T.V. was the proud grandfather of 14 precious grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two sisters: Betty Sullivan, of Lincoln, Neb.; and Wilma Stark, of Yuma, Ariz.
T.V. was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Kathryn, who died on Oct. 5, 1996.
Military Services will be officiated on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Fort Logan National Cemetery at Denver.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado - Inpatient Unit, In Memory of T.V. Stradley, 2726 West 11th Street Rd., Greeley, CO 80634.

Maryella Kemper
Accomplished Horsewoman
March 23, 1925 - Feb. 7, 2001

CRAWFORD - Maryella Kemper, age 75, a homemaker and a resident of Crawford since 1990, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in her home at Crawford.
Maryella Beane was born in Spokane, Wash., on March 23, 1925, the daughter of Clifford Beane and Lucille Vera (Eaverson) Beane. She spent her childhood years in Southern California and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in El Sereno, Calif., with the class of 1943.
Maryella married Truman B. Warren, who preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 1980. On April 26, 1985, she was joined in marriage with Harold Kemper at Reno, Nev. Maryella and Harold had shared 15 years together at the time of Maryella's death.
She lived in Oroville, Calif., for 18 years, before she and Harold moved to Crawford in 1990 where they had since made their home.
Maryella was a member of Sage Dome Fine Arts in Hotchkiss and Hotchkiss Fine Arts.
The loves in Maryella's life were sewing, watercolor painting, being an accomplished horsewoman, the outdoors, and hiking. She especially loved to drink coffee over a campfire with a tin cup.
Survivors very grateful to share Maryella's life include her husband, Harold Kemper, of Crawford; three daughters: Melani and husband Gary Hutton, of Browns Valley, Calif.; Melinda and husband Lee Oding, of Houston, Texas; Melissa and husband Fred Hair, of Colorado Springs; two stepsons; and two stepdaughters.
Maryella was the proud grandmother of four precious grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four stepgrandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Donna and husband Kenneth Spencer, of Crawford.
Along with both of her parents and her first husband, Maryella was also preceded in death by one sister.
An open house to celebrate Maryella's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 427 "J" St. in Crawford - the Spencer residence.

Lucia 'Jean' Hake
Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother
Sept. 25, 1923 - Feb. 6, 2001

MONTROSE - Lucia "Jean" Hake, age 77, a homemaker and a resident of Montrose since 1989, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 6, 2001, at her home in Montrose.
Lucia Jean Click, the daughter of John Franklin Click and Nancy M. (Brooks) Click, was born on Sept. 25, 1923, in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she spent her childhood years, received her education, and grew to adulthood.
On Oct. 28, 1948, Jean was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Lyle Edward Hake at Ottumwa, Iowa. Jean and Lyle's lives were blessed with two children and they had the privilege of sharing 52 years together last year in October.
In July of 1989, the Hakes moved from Albuquerque, N.M., to Montrose where they made their home until the time of Jean's death.
Survivors very grateful to share Jean's life include her husband, Lyle E. Hake, of Montrose; one son, Michael Alan Hake and wife Nancy, of Arvada; one daughter, Susan and husband Paul Brothers, of Winchester, Va.; and two precious grandchildren: Megan and Ryan Brothers.
Jean was preceded in death by both of her parents, one brother, and one sister.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Jean's life will be officiated on Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel.
At Jean's request, cremation has taken place, with arrangements being handled under the direction of the Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose; (970) 249-2121.

Clorinda Gonzales
Homemaker, Fantastic Mother
May 4, 1910 - Feb. 5, 2001

RIDGWAY - Clorinda Gonzales, age 90, the mother of 13 children and a resident of Ridgway for the past six years, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2001, at her home in Ridgway.
Clorinda Cisneros, one of 10 children and the daughter of Daniel Cisneros and Camilita (Romero) Cisneros, was born on May 4, 1910, in Questa, N.M., where she spent her childhood years, graduated from the eighth grade, and grew to adulthood.
Clorinda married Isaac Martinez, with the marriage ending in divorce. Isaac died in January of 1970.
In 1956, she was joined in marriage with John Gonzales. John preceded Clorinda in death on April 9, 1998.
She lived in Questa, N.M.; Reseda, Calif.; and Grand Junction prior to making her home in Ridgway six years ago, where she remained until the time of her death.
Clorinda was a homemaker and a fantastic mother.
She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Canoga Park, Calif.
Among the many loves in Clorinda's life that brought her happiness were swimming, jogging, and sewing.
Survivors who were blessed to share Clorinda's life include six sons: Pete Martinez, of La Mirada, Calif.; Tom Martinez and wife Miriam, of Ridgway; Johnny Martinez and wife Maria, of Simi Valley, Calif.; Max Martinez; Danny Martinez; Jimmy Martinez and wife Karen, all of Grand Junction; and four daughters: Elizabeth and husband Joe Garcia, of Calabasas, Calif.; Luyine Mondragon, of Newbury, Calif.; Diane and husband Joe Lopez, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and Geri and husband Dick Horne, of Montrose.
Clorinda was the proud grandmother of 28 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include two brothers: Tino Cisneros and wife Ida, of Cerro, N.M.; Manuel Cisneros and wife Jenny, of Pacoima, Calif.; and one sister, Rose Padilla, of Tulsa, Okla.
Also surviving are six stepsons: Julian Gonzales, Hubert Gonzales, Roger Gonzales, Johnny Gonzales, Claude Gonzales, Raymond Gonzales; and five stepdaughters: Hope, Celia, Alfonsa, Eva, and Gracie.
Along with both of her parents and her husband, John, Clorinda was also preceded in death by one daughter, Geri's twin, Mary Mae Martinez, who died at birth; one son, Tony Martinez, who died on Feb. 4, 1989; five brothers: Pete, Samuel, J.B., Jimmy, Abel; and one sister, Agripina.
Memorial Services in loving remembrance and to honor Clorinda's life will be officiated by Steve Millican on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Christian Covenant Church in Montrose. The service will conclude at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer's Assn. - Rocky Mountain Chapter, In Memory of Clorinda Gonzales, 789 Sherman St., Suite 500, Denver, CO 80203-3532 or to the family to help with funeral expenses.

Charles A. 'Chuck' Raish
WW II Vet, A Generous Man
Sept. 26, 1925 - Jan. 26, 2001

ARVADA - Former Montrose resident, Charles A. Raish, known by his many friends as "Chuck," age 75, died after an extended illness on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in the Lutheran Hospital at Denver.
Charles A. Raish, the son of Clair and Emma Raish, was born on Sept. 26, 1925, in Montrose, Colo. Chuck was raised in Montrose and graduated from Montrose County High School in 1943.
Chuck then proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
Right after high school, while he was in the U.S. Navy, Chuck married Ellen Fish, a local girl. After the war, they settled in Montrose where Chuck became a meat cutter for Safeway. Later they moved to the Denver area where they owned a meat market and deli.
After Ellen's death in 1980, Chuck went to work for King Supers in Arvada, retiring in 1995. He later married Anita Carlino.
Chuck was an extremely hard worker and enjoyed many successes in his life. He was a very generous man who possessed a love of nature, animals, and history. He will be lovingly remembered for his great sense of humor. He dearly loved all of his family who will greatly miss him.
Survivors who were blessed to share Chuck's life include his wife, Anita Raish, of Arvada; two sons: Allan Raish, of Altanta, Ga.; Duane Raish, of Denver; one daughter, Sandra Rutland, of Houston, Texas; numerous grandchildren; three stepsons: Ray, David and Kevin; one stepdaughter, Dennette January, all of Arvada; and one sister, Ruth Roatcap, of Montrose.
Chuck was preceded in death by both of his parents; his first wife, Ellen; twin sons; one brother, Walter; and one sister, Lucille Johnson.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Arvada.
Interment, with Graveside Military Honors, followed the Mass in the Fort Logan National Cemetery at Denver.

Dorothy Anne Faries
Kind-Hearted, Strong-Willed
March 2, 1933 - Feb. 2, 2001

OAKLAND, Calif. - Former Olathe resident, Dorothy Anne Faries, age 67, a longtime resident of Oakland, Calif., died peacefully Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at her home in Oakland, after a 13-year battle with cancer.
Dorothy Anne Weiss was born in Rockwell City, Iowa, on March 2, 1933, the daughter of William and Anna (Heuser) Weiss. She moved with her family to Olathe, Colo., in 1949 and was a 1951 graduate of Olathe High School.
Dorothy was married to David Faries of Olathe for 46 years.
She was active in volunteer work with the PTA for 17 years, and had been both a district and state officer of the California PTA and the Audubon Society.
All who knew and loved Dorothy will cherish their memories of this kind-hearted woman with such a strong will for life. She had a great love for her family and taking care of and feeding all the birds.
Survivors who had the honor of sharing Dorothy's life include her husband, David Faries, of Oakland, Calif.; two sons: Steven Faries and wife Lori, of Modesto, Calif.; Alvin Faries and former wife, Michele Faries, both of Montrose; two granddaughters: Becky Mendoza, of Oakland, Calif.; Rachel Faries, of San Leandro, Calif.; one great-grandson, Diego Mendoza, of Oakland, Calif.; two stepgrandchildren: Josh and Chantel Calkins; and one stepgreat-grandson, Dylan Calkins, all of Montrose.
Other family survivors include four sisters: Darlene Nash, of Lafayette, Calif.; Louella Mackenroth, of Roseville, Calif.; Carolyn Hawkins and Mary Hartwig, both of Delta; two brothers: Leonard Weiss, of Paonia; Paul Weiss, of Colorado Springs; her stepmother, Mae Weiss; and a stepsister, Doris Myers, both of Delta.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Dorothy's life were officiated by Pastor Monte Gusewelle on Monday, Feb. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 6038 Brann St., in Oakland, Calif., where Dorothy was an active member. The service concluded at the church.
Interment and Graveside Services will be officiated by Rev. Joseph A. Faries on Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. in the Olathe Cemetery at Olathe.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.

Richard Allen Vierra
Beloved Father, Grandfather
May 1, 1926 - Feb. 3, 2001

PAONIA - Longtime Paonia resident, Richard Allen Vierra, age 74, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at his home in Paonia.
Richard Allen Vierra, the son of Reuben Elwood Vierra and Helen (Williams) Vierra, was born on May 1, 1926, in Westwood, Calif., where he spent his childhood, received his education, and grew to adulthood.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States military.
On March 21, 1953, Richard was joined in marriage, for a lifetime partnership, with Georgia Ellen Sanders. Their lives together were blessed with five children and they were privileged to celebrate their 22nd wedding anniversary before Georgia's death on July 10, 1975, in Montrose.
In 1968, the Vierras moved to Paonia where Richard and Georgia both made their home until the times of their deaths.
When Richard was 13 years old he went to work for Redwood Lumber Co., then worked for Hotchkiss Timber before being employed as a coal miner at Fox Nest Coal Mine. He was also the former owner and operator of Redwood Arms Motel in Paonia.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Sonoma, Calif, where his father had served as a commander.
Richard's special interests and hobbies that brought him happiness included collecting coins and gambling tokens, having a metal detector, and panning for gold. His main hobby was collecting things.
Survivors very grateful to share Richard life include one son, Richard Vierra, of Paonia; five daughters: Sharon Vierra, of Sacramento, Calif.; Karen Smith, of Redding, Calif.; Marsha Wilmeth, of Paonia; and Micki Trujillo, of Hotchkiss.
He was the proud grandfather of 11 precious grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Other family survivors include one sister, Barbara Mentor; and one sister-in-law, Madeline Vierra, of Sacramento, Calif.
Richard was preceded in death by both of his parents; his wife, Georgia; and one brother, Elwood Vierra.
Funeral Services in loving remembrance of Richard's life will be officiated by James Gall on Friday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia.
Interment will follow the service in the Bethlehem Cemetery at Paonia.
