Frances B. Abbie' Wegher
Frances B. "Abbie" Wegher, 95, a Durango native and owner of Wegher's Food Store on College Avenue, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She died of natural causes, said her sister, Lena Babey.
Mrs. Wegher was born July 16, 1908, in Durango, the daughter of Catherine (Sartore) Baudino and John Baudino.
She graduated from Durango High School and earned a teaching degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley (formerly Colorado Teacher's College). She taught for Park School in District 9-R for many years. She went on to teach at St. Columba.
She married Johnnie Wegher in Durango in 1949, and she will be remembered as the bookkeeper for the family business.
"She was a very gracious lady," Lena Babey said. "If she heard of a birth or a sickness of any of her customers, she always sent flowers. It was the best ad the store could have had."
Mrs. Wegher was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Laureate Psi Chapter of the national sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, the American Association of University Women and the Sorelle di Colombo Lodge.
An active woman, Mrs. Wegher worked puzzles, played cards, crocheted, knitted, gave piano lessons and tutored children who were behind in their school work.
"She once crocheted a wedding dress that two of my daughters wore," Lena Babey said. "And they looked lovely."
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993.
She is survived by her sister, of Durango; and numerous nephews; her great niece and her two great nephews.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos, with Sacred Heart, will officiate. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango.
Elizabeth M. Self
Elizabeth M. Self, 91, of Durango the former owner of the Travel Inn Lodge on Eighth Avenue died on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in Aztec. She died of heart failure, said her daughter, Jean Meister Vinyard.
Mrs. Self was born July 28, 1912, in Mosca, the daughter of Lena (Dunnington) O'Toole and William R. O'Toole.
She married Delbert Meister, and in 1937 they moved to Durango and bought the Travel Inn Lodge. They later divorced and she was single for many years, first working for Wall Drug Store, then for Burns National Bank.
She married Ray Self in 1958, and they lived on a ranch on the Florida River, three miles north of Elmore's Store where they enjoyed a camp and picnic grounds on the tree-shaded river, until Mr. Self's death in 1988.
In 1990, Mrs. Self moved to Forest Avenue in Durango; later to Sunshine Gardens, then The Bridge in Farmington and, most recently to Four Corners Care Center.
Mrs. Self was a member of Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a volunteer helper for many people who needed assistance with doctor's appointments, grocery shopping and personal needs.
She was a member of Florida Grange and was named Grange Citizen of the Year in 1991. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and playing with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Self was preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Meister Metz, and her infant son, William H. Meister.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Meister Vinyard of Wickenberg, Ariz.; her brother, Keith O'Toole of Sacramento, Calif.; her sisters, Rose Frasier of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Eunice Webster of San Diego; her stepchildren: Margaret Barr of Farmington and Lorelei Barnes of Durango; her 10 grandchildren: Jan Inman of Denver, Jeff Vinyard of Denver, Debbie Donahue of Durango, Rocky Metz of Cedar Hill, N.M., Shari Yerkes of Corona, Calif., David Barr of Silver City, N.M., Ray Barr of Albuquerque, Lori Ott of Durango, Levi Barnes and Dusty Barnes, both of Durango; her 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church, County Road 130, Durango. The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Top of Page
Joseph L. Joe' Ice Sr.
Joseph L. "Joe" Ice Sr., 91, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at La Junta Regional Medical Center. He died of old age, pneumonia and resulting infections, said his daughter, Lillian B. Wiley.
He was born June 23, 1912, in Springfield, the son of Stella May Elizabeth Ice and James Robert Ice.
Mr. Ice married Alice Haddox in Springfield in June 1934.
He spent his life farming and ranching in Southeast Colorado until he retired to the Bayfield area. He lived near Bayfield for 10 years before moving into the Fowler Health Care Nursing Home in Fowler, where he lived with Alice, his wife of 69 years.
They both enjoyed music and dancing throughout their years together. They also valued the time they spent with their grandchildren and friends, Lillian Wiley remembered.
Twelve brothers and sisters preceded Mr. Ice in death, as did his grandson, Kelly Joe Wiley.
Mr. Ice is survived by his wife, of Fowler; his children: Lillian Wiley of Bayfield, Rita Echerkt of Kim, and Joseph L. Ice of Bayfield; his sister, Erma Nichols of Ellensburg, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.
Mr. Ice was a member of the Masonic Lodge and received full Masonic Rites at his graveside service on Nov. 19, in Springfield Cemetery. Top of Page
Don Hargis
Don Hargis, 62, of Fritch, Texas formerly of Durango died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Golden Plains Community Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. He died of a heart attack, his family said.
Mr. Hargis was born March 5, 1941, the son of Roxie and Robert Hargis. He was a native of Bobtown, Ky., and a resident of Borger, Texas, for 14 years. Before moving to Texas, he lived in Durango and Ignacio. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served overseas, and was a surveyor and estimator.
He married Ellen Willmett on Sept. 28, 1963, in Durango. She is a 1963 graduate of Durango High School.
"He was a loving husband, father and grandfather," Mrs. Hargis, said. "He enjoyed reading and the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing."
Survivors include his wife, of Fritch; his daughters: Roxie Stitzel of Fritch, Valerie Lockman of Amarillo, Texas, and Dee-Dee Davis of Borger, Texas; his brothers: Leonard Hargis and Dever Hargis, both of Eubank, Ky., and Robert Taylor of Canover, N.C.; his sister, Shirley Dykes of Somerset, Ky., his mother- and father-in-law, Helen and Elmer Willmett of Durango; and his 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Florida Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hargis has been cremated. Top of Page
Wilma Erlene Morrison
Wilma Erlene Morrison, 76, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in her home at Pagosa Springs. She died of complications following a stroke, said her son, Ken S. Morrison.
Mrs. Morrison was born Oct. 4, 1927, in Anadarko, Okla., the daughter of Doris Mc-Wethy Hunt and Kenneth Hunt. A farm girl, Wilma attended a one-room, country school in Anadarko. She graduated at the top of her class from Anadarko High School and attended Phillips University, Enid, Okla., where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics with a minor in physics in 1948.
She accepted a high school teaching position at Perry, Okla., where she taught mathematics for three years. She later joined Phillips Petroleum Company Research Department to use an electron microscope for three years in Bartlesville, Okla. There she met Harold E. Morrison. They married in Enid in 1952 and lived in Bartlesville for 35 years.
Mrs. Morrison loved teaching and youngsters. She attended summer school at the University of Colorado, Boulder to meet requirements for an Oklahoma Life Teaching Certificate. She secured a Colorado Certificate in 1985.
In Bartlesville, she chose to be a homemaker and math tutor for many years. She raised two sons, Keith Morrison and Ken Morrison. When they grew up, Mrs. Morrison returned to teaching mathematics, retiring in 1985.
She moved to Pagosa Springs in 1986, where she worked as a substitute teacher from time to time.
Mrs. Morrison was baptized at age 12 in First Methodist Church in Anadarko and later joined Methodist churches in Enid, Perry and Bartlesville, Okla., She also belong to the Community United Methodist Church in Pagosa Springs.
She enjoyed the Mountain View Homemakers Club, and began its baby-sitting course. She was Archuleta County Fair secretary and co-founder of the Pagosa Piecemakers Quilt Club.
Mrs. Morrison befriended and helped everyone she met, said her son, Ken Morrison.
She is survived by her husband, Harold E. Morrison, who cared for her during the last year of her life when she was weakened by the stroke; her sons: Keith Morrison of Homestead, Fla., and Ken Morrison of Pagosa Springs; and her granddaughter, Christine Morrison of Pagosa Springs.
Plans for a memorial service will be announced. Memorial gifts may be made to Arthritis Foundation or Community United Methodist Church.
Robert Asher
Robert Asher, 65, the owner of the Billy Goat Saloon in Gem Village, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in Durango. He died of natural causes, his family said.
Mr. Asher was born Nov. 18, 1938, in Monroe, Mich., the son of Geneva (Johnson) Asher and Robert Asher, and grew up in Indiana.
He served with the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in Germany.
He married Ellen F. Asher in Chicago, Ill. on May 18, 1971.
He worked as a plant manager in a plastics manufacturing company, as a gold miner, and most recently, as owner and operator of the Billy Goat Saloon for 24 years.
Mr. Asher enjoyed hunting and fishing. He built his house on U.S. Highway 160.
"He was a good man and a hard worker and was very adventurous," said his wife, Ellen Asher. "We had a lot of good times together. He loved to talk about history, and he was a good listener."
Mr. Asher is survived by his wife, of Bayfield; his children: Ronnie Lahr of Slaughters, Ky., Robert Begley, Lisa Asher and Jessica Asher, all of Chicago; his grandchildren: Whitney Lahr, Codie Lahr and Camden Lahr, all of Slaughters, Ky.
A memorial is planned at noon Saturday at The Billy Goat Saloon. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Frank De Borde
Frank De Borde, 88 – who lived in Durango from 1946 through 1985 – died on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, in Nampa, Idaho. He died of pneumonia, Parkinson's disease and other natural causes, said his wife, Beth De Borde.
Mr. De Borde was born on Feb. 2, 1915, in Carlsbad, Texas, the son of Nannie Lou and Oscar Douglas De Borde.
While living in Durango, Mr. De Borde worked as a carpenter, then as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office.
"We were members of the First Baptist Church in Durango for over 40 years. It was our life," Beth De Borde said.
Mr. De Borde is survived by his wife of Nampa; his children, Clint De Borde of Odessa, Texas, and Joan Brewer of Nampa; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Caldwell First Baptist Church in Caldwell, Idaho. Burial will take place at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
William Allen Jack
William Allen Jack, 23, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in Denver. He died of sarcoma cancer, said his aunt, Michelle Jack.
Mr. Jack was born May 17,1980, in Monte Vista, the son of Eleanor Cole Jack and Lynn Earl Jack of Ignacio.
He graduated from Ignacio High School in 1999 where he enjoyed football, wrestling and track. In wrestling, he received the Dedicated Cat Award for the wrestler who works the hardest and has the best attitude for three years, said Ignacio High School Athletic Director Butch Melton.
The Ignacio High School wrestling club and student senate hosted a fund-raising supper for Mr. Jack's family's on Nov. 22.
As a tribute to Mr. Jack, his coaches will retire his jersey in a ceremony after his funeral.
Mr. Jack was serving as a missionary in the San Jose, Calif., Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had taught the Gospel for 14 months when he came home to receive medical attention.
"He will always be remembered as a courageous and gentle giant, sharing his love and unwavering faith in his Savior," said his aunt, Michelle Jack.
Mr. Jack enjoyed horse-packing trips into the mountains with his father and brothers. He worked as an outfitter in Telluride during one summer. He also graduated from Vo-Tec in Denver as a heavy-equipment operator.
He is survived by his parents; his grandfather, Urban Earl Jack of Allison; his brothers, Derrick Jack, James Jack, Darcy Jack and Adam Jack; five nieces and nephews; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
The viewing will take place at 9 a.m. Wednesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Bayfield. The funeral will follow at 10 a.m. in the chapel. Burial will be at the Crestview Cemetery at U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 172.
