Noble Annella Parks Wells
Noble Annella Parks Wells, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at her home in Bayfield. She was 89.
Mrs. Wells was born July 30, 1913, in Magdalena, N.M., the daughter of Noble Pipen Parks and Ruby Mae Winter Parks. She was a longtime resident of Bayfield. She moved to Bayfield from Texas in 1930 when she was 17. She married Dee Dee Wells on Aug. 6, 1931, in Aztec. Together they ran several businesses in Bayfield including a drug store, a grocery store and a liquor store.
After retirement, she managed her business properties and a mobile-home park. She served on a committee that helped to rearrange the rural schools in the Bayfield area.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by a son, Ray Wells of Bayfield; two daughters, Jeanne Wells, of West Los Angeles, Calif., and Roseanne Cusick, of Bayfield; nine grandchildren, Maggie Wells, of Long Beach, Calif., Tasha Bigler, of Provo, Utah, Ryan Cusick and Andrea Cusick, both of Bayfield, Heidi Cusick of Laie, Hawaii, and Karena, Laramie, Echo and Jacy Miller, all of Ignacio; and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bayfield. Burial will follow at the Pine River Cemetery.

Violet A. McGuire
Violet A. McGuire died Monday, May 12, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 86.
Mrs. McGuire was born May 20, 1916, in Wetumka, Okla., the daughter of Elmer and Edith Jones. She was raised in Oklahoma. She married Lewis (Mickey) McGuire on Jan. 30, 1937. They lived in many western states including Kansas, Wyoming, Montana and Texas while he worked for Conoco Oil Co.
Mrs. McGuire served in many social and charitable organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by two daughters, Jan Newlin, of Durango, and Carol Bessey, of Billings, Mont.; a granddaughter, Brenda Wells, of Dallas, Texas; three grandsons, Brian Bessey, of Billings, Mont., Bret Newlin, of Denver and Kurt Newlin, of Fort Collins; and four great grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody, Wyo. The Rev. Joe Stewart will officiate.

Joe Mestek
Joe Mestek died Monday, May 12, 2003, at his home in Durango. He was 79.
Mr. Mestek was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Durango. He worked for Montgomery Ward for 35 years. He retired in 1985. He was a member of the Slovene National Benefit Society.
He is survived by a brother, Frank Mestek, of Denver; an aunt, Angela Shry, of Durango; two nieces and three nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church. The Rev. Paul Montez will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary.
Violet E. (Bette) Colvin
Violet E. (Bette) Colvin died Monday, May 12, 2003 at Four Corners Health Care Center of cancer. She was 86.
Ms. Colvin was born in Durango on Oct. 22, 1916, to James Herbert Colvin and Violet Haze Colvin. The family moved several times, but returned to Durango. She graduated from Durango High School in 1935. She worked at Woolworth for several years and at Taylor-Raymond Jeweler. She began her own business, Gaye Lynn Floral. She sold the shop because of allergies and retired in 1975.
She is survived by three nieces and a nephew.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate.

Amy Shelton
Amy Shelton, of Farmington, died at home Friday, May 9, 2003. She was 29.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
She is the daughter of Ted Gomez Jr., of Farmington.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles.
William Freddie McIntyre
William Freddie McIntyre died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at his home in Bayfield. He was 94.
Mr. McIntyre was born June 17, 1908, in Bertrand, Okla., the son of James and Martha McIntyre. He married Josie Eveline McIntyre on March 12, 1930, in New Mexico. He was a cowboy for the W’s Ranch in parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado. He and his family moved to this area in 1938.
Mr. McIntyre was a farmer and rancher in Bayfield. He raised award-winning registered, milking, shorthorn cattle and race-winning registered quarter horses. He is a past president of the National Milking Shorthorn Cattleman’s Association.
He was recently awarded the Heritage Award, and in 1992 he was honored as the Father of the Year by the La Plata County Cattleman’s Association.
He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting activities. He was an avid domino player.
Donald McIntyre, his son, said he was a sharp horse trader.
"It wasn’t the horse you have. It’s the man you meet," McIntyre said of his father’s thoughts on horse trading.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josie E. McIntyre in 1993; a daughter, Billie Jo Rinker; and a great-granddaughter, April Sutherland.
He is survived by his son, Donald McIntyre of Bayfield; two daughters, Betty Wyatt of Edmond, Okla., and Carolynne Taylor of Bayfield; 15 grandchildren, Gary Rinker of Clayton, N.M., Cheryl Callis of Texline, Texas, Kay Irwin of Logan, N.M., Donna Hunter of Odessa, Texas, Karen French of Aztec, Corky McIntyre, Jetta Sue Guilliams, Trent Taylor, Rick McIntyre, Andrea Taylor, LaTitia Taylor and Travis Taylor, all of Bayfield, Scott Wyatt of Edmund, Okla., Darin Wyatt of Nashville, Tenn., and Lance Taylor of Arboles; 33 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield. Gene Chapin, of the Church of Christ, will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Tennie Bernice Puckett
Tennie Bernice Puckett, a World War II veteran and a long-time Durango-area resident, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., from natural causes. She was 90.
Mrs. Puckett, the youngest of 10 children, was born May 25, 1912, in Fayetteville, Ark., to Sam and Annie Caudle.
Mrs. Puckett attended grade school in Woolsey, Ark. She graduated from high school in 1930 in Eureka Springs, Ark., and she attended nursing college in 1934 at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She also received nursing training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.
She worked as a nurse in New Jersey and Arkansas before she moved to southern New Mexico.
She married Marshall Puckett on Dec. 18, 1945, in Carlsbad, N.M.
Mrs. Puckett served in the U.S. Navy in San Diego in 1942 and was stationed in Pearl Harbor for two years until World War II ended. Mrs. Puckett returned to New Mexico to raise her family and was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1950.
Mrs. Puckett moved to Durango in 1957. She worked as a bookkeeper at Puckett Electric Co., a business she operated with her husband, from 1963 to 1970.
She liked to fish, sew, crochet, garden and can food. She also taught Bible study for 30 years, and she enjoyed trips to Arkansas.
Mrs. Puckett is survived by her husband, Marshall, of Durango; two sons, Jerry Puckett and Joe Puckett, both of Durango; a daughter, Marsha Beaver of Cortez; four granddaughters, Lacy Puckett of Durango, Jodi Puckett of Durango, Valerie Puckett of Columbia, S.C., Stephanie Puckett of San Diego; a grandson, Jason Puckett, who is currently deployed on a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ in Durango. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Melvin R. Butler
Melvin R. Butler, a former resident of Hesperus, died of cancer on Thursday, May 8, 2003, in Aztec. He was 88.
Mr. Butler was born Jan. 22, 1915, in Cleburne, Texas. He moved with his family to Durango at an early age.
"My dad lived his Christian faith and had a wonderful sense of humor. I don’t think he ever met a stranger," said his son, Ed Butler, of Hesperus.
Mr. Butler spent most of his life on the family homestead west of Kline. He and his brother George herded sheep in the La Plata Mountains. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served on destroyer escorts in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II.
Mr. Butler married Eula A. Fisher, of Breen, in 1943, and they had six children. After her death in 1986, he married Thelma Fritzler, of Cortez, and they spent 10 years in Cottonwood, Ariz. They moved to Aztec in September 2002 to be near family members.
In addition to farming, Mr. Butler worked at the Vanadium Corp. of America until it closed, and then as a custodian at Fort Lewis College until he retired. He was a member of the Mountain View Church in Kline.
Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Thelma, of Aztec, three daughters, Linda Borough of Los Angeles, Sue Ullom of Hesperus and Dr. Eula Das of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; sons Ed Butler of Hesperus and Peter Butler of Galeton, Colo.; two sisters, Frances Corbin of Butler, Ky., and Vera Ullom of Colorado Springs; and brothers Luther Butler of Stephenville, Texas, and Virgil Butler of Hamilton, Ohio. He also is survived by his mother-in-law, Edith Fisher of Cottonwood; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, 700 Navajo St., in Aztec. Burial will follow at Marvel Cemetery.
Berta Talamante
Maria Berta Talamante, of Durango, died of natural causes on Friday, May 9, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 57.
Ms. Talamante was born May 11, 1945, in Edith, Colo., the daughter of Eufemio and Margarita Chavez Talamante.
Ms. Talamante worked as a courier for Mercy Medical Center, an electronics technician, auto mechanic and a lapidary cutter. She enjoyed music, cooking, electronics, the outdoors and reading about alternative health.
Ms. Talamante is survived by Beverly Walter, a lifelong friend and companion; brothers Joe Talamante of Ignacio, and Horace Jaramillo of Pagosa Springs; sisters Margaret Madrid of Clovis, N.M., Florinda Flores of Phoenix, Rosalita Kidwell of Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Mary Ellen Quezada of Pagosa Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs. The Rev. John Bowe will officiate.
A private memorial service will be held at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango. Contributions may be made to the La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302 or a humane society of choice.
Aaron Eugene Weston
Aaron Eugene Weston, of Juneau, Alaska, died May 3, 2003, at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He was 45.
Mr. Weston was born July 22, 1957, in Salt Lake City. He moved with his family to Durango in 1967 and graduated from Durango High School in 1975. He completed his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Brigham Young University in 1980, and master’s degree from Utah State University in 1985. He was awarded his professional engineer’s license in 1987.
He married Kim Kowallis in June 1982. Their daughter, Brandy, was born May 12, 1983. Mr. and Mrs. Weston were divorced in 1986, and Brandy Weston moved with Mr. Weston to Juneau, Alaska in 1990.
Mr. Weston was a civil engineer for Utah Power and Light, the Montana Department of Highways and the U.S. Forest Service office in Ketchikan, Alaska. In 1985 he moved back to Durango and worked for Brewer and Associates of Farmington, N.M. He moved to Juneau, Alaska in 1990 to work at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He then transferred to the Alaska Department of Highways and was working for the Juneau office of the U.S. Forest Service at the time of his death.
He is survived by a daughter, Brandy Weston of Gunnison; his parents, Carl and Jeanne Weston of Durango; three sisters, Jeannette Weston of Boise, Idaho, Ruth Davis of Bayfield, and Carla Weston of Durango; a brother, Mark Weston of Kalispell, Mont.; two nephews; two nieces; one grand-nephew; and a close family friend, Denton Palmer.
He enjoyed pottery, strategy games and thoughtful conversation. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, and spent time hiking, camping, canoeing, boating and walking. He also enjoyed gardening.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Juneau Second Ward, Juneau, Alaska Stake.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. May 31, at Alaskan Memorial Park, 3839 Riverside Drive, Juneau, Alaska, with burial following.
