V. Maxine Tickle

V. Maxine Tickle died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 86.

Mrs. Tickle was born March 29, 1917, in Bluefield, W.Va., the daughter of Wade and Fanny Reid. She was reared in West Virginia and married Harry M. Tickle, who was in the Army Air Corps.

The couple moved to the Miami area in 1951. In 1979, they moved to Durango, becoming some of the first residents of Tamarin Square.

As a volunteer for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, she collected many boxes of Christmas cards for its program. She also did volunteer work for Toys for Tots and the Methodist Thrift Shop.

"She was a homemaker, a loving wife and devoted mother," said her son, Bud Tickle of Hesperus.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Tickle is survived by daughter Barbara Carpenter of New Port Richey, Fla.; granddaughters Gail Loomis of Littleton, Rena Tickle of Plantation, Fla., and Tara Carpenter of New Port Richey, Fla. She also is survived by six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Tickle was preceded in death by her husband.

A graveside service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenmount Cemetery, with the Rev. Keith Dickenson officiating.

Ernest Ames Bader

Durango native, Ernest Ames Bader, 84, died on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Paonia Care and Rehab in Paonia. He died from complications of a stroke he suffered in 1999, said his son Tom Bader.

Mr. Bader was born on Oct. 7, 1919, the son of Mary Agnes (Ames) Bader and Ernest Henry Bader in Durango. He spent his early childhood in Old Fort Lewis, then went to school in Durango and graduated with the class of 1935. Ames went on to Colorado A & M, which later became Colorado State University, in Fort Collins, where he graduated in 1939.

He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. In 1948, he moved to Golden, and lived there until 1984, when he retired to Paonia.

He married Marilyn Joy Schaffer on April 23, 1955, in Denver.

Mr. Bader, an optometrist, enjoyed wine making, gardening, fishing, hunting and skiing. He especially liked to study native plants of Colorado and astronomy.

"He was a Renaissance man who was so interested in doing things and knowing how things worked," said Tom Bader. "He was always learning. We made down clothing and built a telescope together."

He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, who died on May 19, 2003, in Paonia.

Mr. Bader is survived by his children: Doug Bader of Aurora, Tom Bader of Arvada, Todd Bader of Evanston, Wyo., Dean Bader of Orem, Utah, and Aril Lowry of Englewood, N.J.; his brothers: Clay Bader of Mancos and Bill Bader of Grand Junction; his sisters: Margaret Crawford and Floy Singleton, both of Paonia; and his seven grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Feb. 7, at the United Methodist Church in Paonia. The Rev. John Nadasi will officiate. Burial will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia..

Carol F. Lettau

Carol F. Lettau, 66, of Thornton, died on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at North Suburban Hospital in Thorton. She died of natural causes, said a spokesman for Highland Mortuary

Mrs. Lettau was born on April 3, 1937, in Highmore, S.D., the daughter of Louise Ferrell and Lawrence J. Weber. She grew up in Highmore before moving to Durango where she worked at City Market and as a hairdresser. She also raised her four children here.

When she retired, Mrs. Lettau moved to Thornton, where she supported the Denver Broncos. She also enjoyed collecting frogs and trying her luck at Blackhawk Casino.

She is survived by her husband, Harlene Lettau; her children: Suzanne Angevine, Colleen Larrabee, Tom Lettau, and Jim Lettau; her grandchildren: Travis, Carina, Caitlin, Christian and Justin; her mother, Louise Ferrell; her brother, Lawrence Weber; her sisters: Patricia Lass, Mary Jo Hirsch, Sandra Werdel and Catherine Wang; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held Jan. 23 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Thornton.

Margaret Kathleen "Kathy" Deeds

Margaret Kathleen "Kathy" Deeds, 44, died Monday, Jan. 26, in Lansing, Mich., from congestive heart failure and complications from open-heart surgery.

Ms. Deeds was born on Feb. 2, 1959, in Lamar, the daughter of Margaret Deeds and the late Jack Deeds.

She was devoted to her poodle, Pepper.

Ms. Deeds is survived by her mother, of Mason Mich.; her sisters: Debbie Spears of Durango and Janet Brewer of Mason; her nephews: Jesse, Jeremy and Jon and her niece, Jenni.

Private graveside services will be held in late spring with burial in Mason. The family requests no flowers.

Grace Godbold Houser

Grace Godbold Houser, 82, who had lived in Durango since 2001, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center. She died of pneumonia.

Mrs. Houser was born in rural Mississippi on Jan. 9, 1922, the third of six children of Burton and Losia Godbold.

In 1945, she married returning World War II Army veteran Harry William Houser and traveled with him and their two sons through Europe and the United States until Major Houser retired in San Antonio, Texas, in 1957.

After her husband's death in 1975, Mrs. Houser stayed in San Antonio for a decade before moving to Pagosa Springs in the mid-1980s, then on to Durango. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Houser is survived by her sons: Alan Houser of Berkeley, Calif., and Roger Houser of Royce City, Texas; her sister, Bessie Allen of Virginia; her brother, James Godbold of Durango; her grandsons Jimmy Houser and Chris Houser of Texas, Ari Houser of Virginia, Jonathan Houser of Maryland, and Matthew Houser of Washington.

A graveside service will be at 1:45 p.m. Friday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 1280 S. Parker Rd., Denver 80231.

Anne Loretta Schlageter

Anne Loretta Schlageter, 82, who lived in Durango for 43 years, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at her home here after a brief illness.

Mrs. Schlageter was born May 11, 1921, in Denver, the daughter of Esther (Kinsley) McHugh and Robert McHugh. She married the late Joseph M. Schlageter in 1943 in Denver.

She and her husband, Joe, enjoyed golf and skiing. They were among the first skiers at Purgatory Mountain Resort. Mrs. Schlageter was active in the Lady's Golf Club at Hillcrest Golf Course, the Durango Club and many social activities.

As a longtime cancer survivor, Mrs. Schlageter was also active in Reach & Recovery, and the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Schlageter was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her sons: Steve Schlageter and Eugene Schlageter; her grandchildren: Tricia Taylor, Nicole Schlageter, Margarita Oritz, Rebekah Warner, John Joseph Schlageter and Reymundo Juarez.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Hood Mortuary. The Rev. Jerry Mulder will officiate. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kiwanis Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 976, Durango 81302 or the American Cancer Society, 3801 Main St., Durango 81301.

Ollie Coons Atkinson Jr.
Ollie Coons Atkinson Jr. died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Mary Chiles Hospital in Mount Sterling, Ky. He was 87.

Mr. Atkinson was born June 3, 1916, in Bath County, Ky., to Blanche Crouch and Ollie Coons Atkinson Sr. He graduated from Sharpsburg High School in Sharpsburg, Ky.

Mr. Atkinson worked as a farmer, a truck driver, a school bus driver, a construction worker and a Kroger employee. He was also a member of the Sharpsburg School Board and the Sharpsburg Lions Club.

"He was great," said Alan Atkinson, Mr. Atkinson's grandson. "He was always there for everybody in the family."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle.

He is survived by two sons, Ronnie Atkinson of Durango and Gerald Atkinson of Mount Sterling, Ky.; a brother, William O. "Ted" Atkinson of Lexington, Ky.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Taul Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Sterling, Ky. Burial will occur at Machpelah Cemetery in Mount Sterling, Ky. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Church of God in Mount Sterling, Ky., First United Methodist Church Building Fund in Mount Sterling, or St. Claire Hospice in Morehead, Ky.

Elton Charles Highland

Elton Charles Highland, of Durango, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Four Corners Health Care Center. He was 84.

Mr. Highland was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Grand Island, Neb., the son of Jay Owen Highland and Emma Frye Highland. He married Rebecca Morton on Nov. 4, 1944, in Danville, Ill.

In 1953, the couple moved from El Paso, Texas, to Hermosa. Mr. Highland, who started in the optical business at age 16 in Nebraska, became an optician and owned Highland Optical Service in Hermosa for 39 years.

Mr. Highland enjoyed creative woodworking and construction projects. He also was an avid gardener and collected stamps.

"He most enjoyed educating himself about how things worked, and building and repairing them," said his son, Jay, of Bayfield.

In addition to his son, Mr. Highland is survived by his wife, Rebecca Highland, of Hermosa; granddaughter, Chantel Highland, of Bayfield; and sister, Eleanor Nelson, of Scotts Bluff, Neb. He also is survived by numerous nieces.

A memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Greenmount Cemetery, with the Rev. Louis M. Day officiating. Cremation was handled by Durango Funeral Options.

Memorial contributions may be made to the hospice at Mercy Medical Center.

Harley H. Wiehe

Harley H. Wiehe, 76, a Durango native and longtime resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, in Farmington. He died of kidney failure following Parkinson's disease and diabetes, said his granddaughter, Rachel James.

Mr. Wiehe was born April 19, 1927, the son of Esther and Herman Wiehe in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Peggy Wiehe on Jan. 1, 1972. He worked as a bookkeeper in Durango. He also worked for Kroeger's True Value.

"He just loved his dogs and all animals," Rachel James said. "He raised birds, goats, chickens, dogs and ducks."

Mr. Wiehe is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Bloomfield; his daughter, Alberta Blake of Kline; his sons, David Blake of Bloomfield, Paul Blake of Prior, Okla., and Daniel Blake of Adair, Okla.; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church, 200 W. Sycamore, in Bloomfield from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. The funeral will follow at 1 p.m., with Dr. Joseph Bunce officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4031 of Durango.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International, 2100 E. 18th Street, Farmington, NM 87401; to the Diabetes Foundation, Memorial and Honor Program, 2625 Pennsylvania NE, Suite 225, Albuquerque, NM 87110; or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

John Joseph Robinson

John Joseph Robinson died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, of natural causes at his home in Durango. He was 73.

Mr. Robinson was born April 13, 1930, in El Paso, Texas, the son of John and Esther (Jackson) Robinson. He married Carolyn S. Robinson on July 3, 1951, in Las Cruces, N.M.

Mr. Robinson was vice president of research and development of Blue Bell Manufacturing, owner of Durango Hearing Aid Center and John's Tackle Shop.

Mr. Robinson fished and hunted and flew his airplane. He was a member of Durango Masonic Lodge #46, A.F. & A.M. and the Al Kaly Shrine.

Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife, of Durango; two daughters, Carolyn E. Robinson of Durango and Joy Maxine Teet of Del Rio, Texas; and son John Patrick Robinson of Seattle. He also is survived by three granddaughters, Kristal Marie Morris, Rebecca Jo Buechle and Renee Elizabeth Buechle, all of Durango.

Also surviving Mr. Robinson are grandsons Brian Shane Teet of San Diego, and John Joseph Robinson IV of Cortez. A great-grandson, Austyn Lowell Morris of Durango; and Clinton E. Welch, of Waco, Texas, a man Mr. Robinson called father, also survive him.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael E. Robinson and John J. Robinson III.

A funeral service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary, with Chaplain Myron Darmour, with Mercy Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation is from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Childrens Hospital or the American Heart Association, 1280 S. Parker Road, Denver 80231.
