James Joseph "Jimmy" Dranguet

James Joseph "Jimmy" Dranguet, 37, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.

Mr. Dranguet was born May 1, 1966, in Dallas, the son of Nancy (Nichols) Dranguet and the late Charles Judson Dranguet.

He graduated from Highland Park High School in Texas in 1985.

He married Thereasa Ruth Huff on Dec. 31, 2002, in Dallas. It was his second marriage.

Mr. Dranguet first came to Colorado as a boy camping with his family. He fell in love with the mountains and chose to make it his home, Mrs. Dranguet remembers. He had been in the Durango/Vallecito area for 14 years.

He worked for many businesses around Vallecito Lake and throughout Colorado, Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico.

He was known as a fun-loving and hardworking cowboy, and a talented craftsman who was able to fix or build anything.

He loved the outdoors, roping and collecting antiques.

"He had a big heart, loved animals and was always willing to help others - family, friend or stranger," said Mrs. Dranguet. "He loved his family and was especially close to his mother."

He is survived by his wife of Phoenix; his daughter, Tyler Marie Dranguet of California; his mother, Nancy Wright of Dallas; his brothers, David Dranguet of Dallas and Bryan Dranguet; his sisters, Monique Dranguet of Dallas and Tinka Dranguet of Durango; his grandfather, Joe Dranguet; his nephew, Luke Dranguet; his aunt and uncle, Suzy Apeland and Don C. Apeland, and three cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1:15 p.m. today at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in Sparkman-Hillcrest Chapel in Dallas.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.

Dranguet died by suicide.

Georgia K. Winner

Georgia K. Winner, 64, who lived in Durango nearly 50 years, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, in Durango. She died of natural causes, her family said.

Mrs. Winner was born Sept. 6, 1939, in Sylvan Grove, Kan., the daughter of Ruby Faye and Louis Kroboth.

She moved to Durango in 1955 and graduated from Durango High School two years later. She married Jack Winner on November 11, 1962, in Las Vegas, Nev.

Mrs. Winner loved to travel with anyone, anywhere, said her husband, Jack Winner.

She owned and operated San Juan Travel, a travel agency.

She also enjoyed cooking, reading, and collecting antique irons and rocks from her travels.

"She loved her family and especially her grandchildren; she always loved our family gatherings," said Mr. Winner.

She is survived by her husband of Durango; her daughter, Cyd Waddell of Durango; her son, Bill Winner of Durango; her grandchildren, Emily Waddell and Cole Waddell, both of Durango; her mother, Ruby Faye Kroboth of Sun City, Ariz.; her sister, Vonda Lea Weems of Palm Springs, Calif.; and her brother, Joseph Kroboth of Scottsdale, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any charity.

Avis A. Miles
Avis A. Miles, 84, who was a student at Durango High School and Fort Lewis College in the 1930s and 1940s, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose. She died of congestive heart failure, according to the Crippin Funeral Home in Montrose.

Mrs. Miles was born on Jan. 11, 1920, in Labette, Kan., the daughter of Alda (Rea) Mullen and Orbit Mullen. She was raised in the Durango area and graduated from Durango High School in 1938. She continued her education at Fort Lewis College, earning her teaching degree.

She married Shirley Gregg Miles in Long Beach, Calif., on Dec. 11, 1942. Mrs. Avis was a homemaker and taught grades one through four in a one-room schoolhouse at Orr. She lived in various places in western Colorado before making her home in Montrose, where she stayed for the rest of her life.

Mrs. Miles was a member of the United Methodist Church in Olathe and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks' Does in Craig. She enjoyed painting fabrics, ceramics, sewing and reading the Bible.

"Avis loved each member of her family. She had a great faith in the Lord and wanted that peace and assurance for others, too. She was a sweet lady," said her daughter Marie Davis, on behalf of the family.

Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her husband on April 22, 1995, and by her granddaughter, Vickie Curtis.

Mrs. Miles is survived by her daughters, Lucille Peterson of Craig, Louise Curtis of Cortez and Marie Davis of Olathe; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carlyle Mullen of Tempe, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Olathe United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Dallas Park Cemetery at Ridgway.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mackinsie Peterson Fund, Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401. Mackinsie Peterson is Mrs. Miles' 6-month-old great-granddaughter who has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare type of malignant tumor.

Anthony Lucas "Tony" Garippo

Anthony Lucas "Tony" Garippo, 17, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Durango in an automobile accident.

Mr. Garippo was born May 5, 1986, in La Mesa, Calif., the son of Debbie and Fiore Garippo.

His family moved to Durango in 1989 when he was 3½ years old. He attended kindergarten through eighth grade at the New Life School.

Mr. Garippo attended Durango High School, and during his sophomore year, he began working with Youth Build, a trade and academic learning program. He graduated from Youth Build in 2003.

He was active in the youth program at New Life Chapel, where he played in the band. Mr. Garippo enjoyed basketball, music, playing guitar, working on and learning about cars, and helping with the children at church.

"Tony loved people," said his mother, Debbie Garippo. "His loyalty was to his family and friends, and he was very upfront with people. He would want everyone to know the most important thing in life was to nurture a relationship with Jesus. He was a great brother to his two younger siblings."

Mr. Garippo is survived by his mother of Durango; his father of Arvada; his sister, Missy Garippo, and brother, Phillip Garippo, both of Durango; his great-grandmother, Helen Sturm of Vallecito Lake; his grandparents, Peg and Al Adams of Vallecito Lake, and Pat and Christ Kontopoulos of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the New Life Chapel, 860 Plymouth Drive, Durango. The Rev. Gary MacDonald and the Rev. Mark Palmer will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to La Plata Youth Services , 2301 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Catherine W. Masters

Catherine W. Masters, who lived on a ranch near Ignacio for many years, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 95.

Catherine Newman Masters was born Aug. 24, 1908, near Grandfield, Okla. She married Carl Edward Masters on Oct. 22, 1926, in Walsenburg.

The couple came to La Plata County in 1935 to help her parents build a house on a ranch 4.5 miles from Ignacio.

In 1940, Carl and Catherine Masters moved to the Panama Canal Zone with their children. They repatriated 10 years later and returned to the Ignacio ranch in 1974.

They spent the rest of their lives there, providing a "home ranch" for three generations of family members. The couple's daughter, Joyce Danford, has lived at the ranch for eight years.

"The most important thing my mother taught my brothers and me," Danford said, "was that if we encountered something unpleasant or unexpected we should turn it into a positive experience."

Danford recalled her mother talking about traveling in a covered wagon in Oklahoma when her parents moved from one house to another. She also traveled in jets, Danford said.

Mrs. Masters was preceded in death by her husband eight years ago and infant son, Larry Lee Masters.

In addition to Joyce Danford, she is survived by sons, Dee Masters of Torrance, Calif., and Karl Masters of Wetumpka, Ala., and many grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. St. Mark's Rev. Andrew Cooley will officiate along with the Rev. Myron Darmour, with Mercy Medical Center. Burial will be at Ignacio Cemetery (East).

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church or the Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango 81301.

Faye Ann Harris

A memorial meeting for Faye Ann Harris, who died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, will be held at noon Sunday in Durango’s Rotary Park.

Miss Harris was a longtime Durango resident and a second-grade teacher for 15 years at Needham Elementary School. After she retired, she earned degrees in massage therapy and computer science.

Raymond Russell Roberts

Raymond Russell Roberts, 93, who was a gardener and fishing guide at Wilderness Trails Ranch in Vallecito Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Community Hospital in Grand Junction after a short illness.

Mr. Roberts was born Aug. 29, 1910, the son of Minning (Baker) Roberts and Russell Roberts. His family homesteaded near Peckham, in rural Weld County, and operated a dairy farm for many years. He graduated from College High School in Greeley and attended Colorado State College, now the University of Northern Colorado, also in Greeley.

After college, Mr. Roberts worked for the U.S. Post Office. During his free time, he was a fisherman, hunter and gardener, activities he enjoyed throughout virtually all of his life. He was a member of the Railway Mail Association and was chairman of the Routt County Republican Party during the 1970s.

Until his retirement, Mr. Roberts lived in Denver with his wife, Betty, whom he married in 1964. They also lived in Clark, near Steamboat Springs, in Greeley and at Wilderness Trails Ranch, near Vallecito Lake during the summer months. Earlier he had been married to Burnece Cline.

Mr. Roberts lived in Durango from 1992 until 2002.

His family remembers his beliefs that "virtue is its own reward" and "love of one's fellows allows happiness."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1989.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his children: Gene Roberts of Durango and Sharon Sample of Grand Junction; his stepchildren: Mike Miller, Sandy Miller of Cleveland, N.M., and Chris Zuvia of Loveland; his seven grandchildren, including Randy Roberts of Bayfield, Lance Roberts of Durango and Erika Roberts of Durango; his seven great grandchildren, and his special friend, Erma Reynolds of Grand Junction.

Helene Kralicek Blair

Helene Kralicek Blair, 86, of Durango, died at home on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004.

She was born on May 12, 1917, in Cleveland to Karel and Emma Kralicek, immigrants from Czechoslovakia. She was raised in Maple Heights, Ohio, and spent much of her childhood in her parents' dry goods store.

In August 1941, she traveled to Denver to visit her brother, an instructor at the Air Corps Photo Intelligence School, where she met Charles Blair, also an instructor.

On their first date, Charles took Helene on a drive to the top of Pike's Peak. One week later, they were married in Ogallala, Neb.

After the war, Charles and Helene moved to Los Angeles and built a successful reprographics business together, where she was the bookkeeper until she retired in 1998.

Mrs. Blair was also active in many charities, particularly the Crippled Children's Society. She was an avid Dodgers and Lakers fan, and she never met a crossword puzzle that she couldn't solve.

In May 2002, Charles and Helene left Los Angeles and moved to Durango with their family.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; her brother, Chek, of Phoenix, her son Bob; and her grandchildren, Adam and Jennifer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Mercy at 3801 Main Ave. in Durango.

Russell "Rusty" Jameson

Russell "Rusty" Jameson, 73, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at home in San Diego, Calif. He died of lung cancer, his son, Bret Jameson, said.

Mr. Jameson was born on Feb. 18, 1930, in Coleman, Texas. Raised in Ajo, Ariz., he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Patricia Lyons and they moved to San Diego in 1956. In 1976, they moved to Durango and opened Kelley's Kards in the Main Mall. In 1984, they opened a branch in the Durango Mall. The family moved back to San Diego in 1994.

Mr. Jameson is survived by his wife of San Diego; his children, Kelley Jameson and Bret Jameson, both of Durango; and his three grandchildren.

A private service will be held at a later date.
