Marcos Louis "Mark" Warner
No matter where he lived, Durango always felt like his hometown to Marcos Louis "Mark" Warner, 56, who died on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at his home in Edina, Minn. The cause of death was cancer.
Mr. Warner was born on May 5, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Dr. Arthur and Natalie Warner.
The Warner family lived in Durango from 1957 to 1965, where Dr. Warner was the director of the San Juan Basin Health Clinic (now San Juan Basin Health Department). They were active in the First United Methodist Church and the Democratic Party, and Dr. Warner was also a member of the Early Bird Toastmasters Club. The family moved to Denver when Mr. Warner was a junior in high school.
He graduated from Lakewood High School and went on to get his bachelor's degree in sociology and psychology from the University of Colorado in Denver in 1974. Mr. Warner later received his master's degree in education from Antioch University.
He married Carilee Witta on June 5, 1981, in Colorado Springs. "He always believed that people came from a good place," she said. "He was very disappointed when people were not honest or honorable."
Mr. Warner was involved in the administration of nonprofit community development and the creation of affordable housing. "He was driven to create affordable housing," said his wife. "He was a project junkie and loved doing the deal. He probably could have made a lot of money in the private sector, but it was more important to him to find homes for families."
When the family lived in Colorado, he was the president of the state chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, an organization he was involved with throughout his career.
"He was very curious and always wanted to learn about the latest technology and computers," said his wife, Carilee Witta Warner. "He wasn't a computer nerd, though." In the last 15 years, he had picked up the game of golf and played often.
Mr. Warner is survived by his wife Carilee Witta Warner of Edina, Minn.; sons Adam Luke Warner, Jack Warner and Harrison Warner, all of Edina, Minn.; his parents Natalie and Dr. Arthur Warner of Denver; sisters Joy Warner and Marcia Warner Conejo, both of Denver, and Ruth Warner, of Denver and Managua, Nicaragua; and brothers Dan Warner of Aurora and Kee Warner of Colorado Springs.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at Lakewood Cemetery Memorial Chapel, located at 36th Street and Hennepin Avenue, South, in Minneapolis. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
A memorial service in Colorado will be held at a later date.
Jane Henry
A homemaker, Jane Henry, 88, died on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kan. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Henry was born to R.C. and Nancy (Scaggs) Prince.
She was preceded in death by her husband E.H. Henry. Mrs. Henry is survived by her daughters Nancy Jane Blackburn of Lacombe, La., Lana Jean Johnson of Wichita, Kan., and Abigail Ann Cleveland of Durango; 11 grandchildren, including Katie White and T.J. Cleveland, both of Durango; and nine great-grandchildren, including Jetta Jane Burr of Durango.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita, Kan.
Memorial donations may be made to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Lloyd Earl Cummings
A memorial service has been scheduled for Lloyd Earl Cummings, who died on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004.
The service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hood Mortuary Chapel. A luncheon and putting contest will be held afterwards at Hillcrest Golf Club. Cremation has occurred.

Known as "Earl the Pearl" at Hillcrest Golf Club, Lloyd Earl Cummings, 94, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Four Corners Health Care Center. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.
The future sportsman was born on Oct. 5, 1909, in Evans to Frederick Earl and Beatrice Cecilia Kaler Cummings. He grew up in Simla and Colorado Springs, completing the eighth grade. He received his G.E.D. in 1953.
A broken arm healed incorrectly, and he was rated 4-F by the military, and he hated that he couldn't enlist in the military, said his daughter Maxine Headrick.
He went to work for the Colorado State Highway Department (now known as the Colorado Department of Transportation). He worked for the department for 45 years, retiring as a maintenance foreman.
Mr. Cummings married Genevieve Sparling on Dec. 30, 1930, in Lamar. The couple lived in Fowler and Granada before moving to Durango in 1949.
"His whole life was sports," said his daughter. "He loved hunting, fishing, pitching horseshoes, slow-pitch softball, baseball and bowling. But the greatest love of his life was golf. After he retired, he even was the golf cart mechanic at Hillcrest. And he golfed his age from the age of 78 to 84," she said.
He played all those sports until he was no longer physically able, and was out on the golf course until he turned 93. And when he wasn't playing, Mr. Cummings was watching golf and baseball on television.
"When he played slow-pitch softball," she said. "I asked him, 'Is there anybody older than you on your team?' He said, 'There's nobody older than me on any team!'"
Mr. Cummings was preceded in death by his wife Genevieve Cummings.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Virgil "V.J." Headrick of Durango; granddaughters Terri Headrick and Vicki Hagler, both of Phoenix; and grandson-in-law Danny Hagler of Phoenix.

Atha Laurena Wilcox
Atha Laurena Wilcox, 90, died at her Dove Creek home on Friday, Aug. 13, 2004. The cause of death was not disclosed.
She was born in Wiley on June 19, 1914, to Charles Atlas and Mary Elizabeth (Nodine) Davis.
Mrs. Wilcox became a licensed practical nurse and worked a number of years at Denver General Hospital.
She kept her hands busy with needlework, crocheting, quilting, knitting and gardening. After her move to the Dove Creek area five years ago, Mrs. Wilcox became very involved with the Senior Center in Cahone.
Mrs. Wilcox was preceded in death by her husband, Waldron Donald Rhodes; daughter Thelma Elizabeth Rhodes in 1938; and grandson Donald E. Rhodes in 2003.
She is survived by her sons, Donald Rhodes of Ashfork, Ariz., and Charles Rhodes of Dove Creek; her stepson, Wayne Wilcox of Casper, Wyo.; her sister, Charlene Snare of Denver; four grandchildren, including Tammy Tentler of Cortez; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She lived in Breen for many years before moving to Dove Creek. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, in the breakfast room at the Day's Inn, next to Fitness Works on County Road 203, just north of Durango.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at the Cedar Cemetery in Montrose.
Linda Sue Eberhart Schultzel
Linda (Lynn) Sue Eberhart Schultzel, a resident of Naples, Fla., who vacationed in the Durango area, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, of an unexpected attack of pneumonitis at Naples Community Hospital. She was 59.
Mrs. Schultzel was born July 17, 1945, to Joan and John Eberhart on the University of Illinois campus, where her father was resuming his education after World War II.
As a child and young woman, Mrs. Schultzel lived in various cities in the United States and Canada. She worked as a hostess and an on-line supervisor for Trans World Airlines.
In 1967, she met Les Schultzel, who was just beginning his third year of medical school. The couple married soon after. They settled in Naples in 1973, where over the years she did volunteer work for the Human Rights Advocacy Committee, the Guardian Ad Litum Program and the Foster Care Council of Southwest Florida, which she co-founded.
Mrs. Schultzel is survived by her husband of 36 years, son John Schultzel, daughter Cynthia Ambers, her parents and a granddaughter, Lola.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Naples Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Betty Schumacher Coy
A Durango pioneer, Betty Schumacher Coy, died on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at her daughter's home in Dolores at the age of 93.
Mrs. Coy was born on April 5, 1911, in Durango, the daughter of George Michael and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Pallakowski) Schumacher. On July 5, 1947, she married Clarence Coy.
Her family lived on a ranch at the top of Reservoir Hill, and Mrs. Coy was involved with farming throughout her life.
Mrs. Coy was an outdoorsy woman who loved to cook, and enjoyed being a homemaker, said her family. "She wore pants in the 30s, when everyone was still wearing dresses, and attended grange dances - she went all over," said her daughter. "When I came home from school, she always had a treat like cookies around. She was a riveter during World War II. She was super-patriotic."
Having been a longtime Durango resident, she was well-versed in Durango history. In 1985, she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Surviving Mrs. Coy are her children L. Bill Fields of Las Vegas, Darleen Turner of Winslow, Ariz., Michael C. Coy of Malaysia, and Elizabette J. Coy of Dolores; her grandson William Lewis of Dolores and 14 other grandchildren, as well as several great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Clarence Coy, children Roy Lee Fields, Lavora Fields, Eldon Coy, and granddaughter Kathy Fields.
A visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Ertel Funeral Home. Graveside services for Mrs. Coy will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Bishop Spencer Smith will officiate.
Jason William Bannick
A Fort Lewis College student, Jason Bannick, 19, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center after an auto-pedestrian accident on U.S. Highway 160.
Mr. Bannick was born Dec. 21, 1984, in Denver. He graduated from Cherry Creek High School in 2003. He held several jobs during his short lifetime including supervisory roles at The Shred Shed, Zumiez and Paper Warehouse. He also organized and was a member of The Shred Shed Skating and Snowboarding teams in Durango.
He was known for his kind spirit, his unending sense of humor and great athletic abilities.
He was able to live life to the fullest and spread joy, lightheartedness and generosity everywhere he went. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, said his family.
Mr. Bannick is survived by his mother and step-father, Patty and Chris Woolsey of Centennial; his father and step-mother Terry and Stephanie Bannick of Englewood; his twin sister Tracie of Boulder; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary in Littleton, and a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Littleton Church of Christ, 6495 S. Colorado Blvd., with interment to follow at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Donna Ramsey Nicholson
Donna Ramsey Nicholson, a resident of Durango for some 45 years, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in Colorado Springs after a heart operation.
She was known by many as an avid equestrian, elder care-giver and general outdoors sportswoman. Her family was among the first settlers of Lake City, where the family continues to gather regularly.
Surviving Mrs. Nicholson are her husband, Charles; daughters Sanlen Sooter-Lewis and Dinah Sooter Bartch, both of Durango; and granddaughters Hannah McKendry and Jenny Bartch, both of Durango.
A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. before the 10 a.m. funeral service at Fort Lewis College on Saturday. The largely informal service will invite audience participation.
An interment will be at Elco Cemetery in Durango, and after, a potluck reception will be held at Eureka Grange Hall, 10 miles south on U.S. Highway 550.
Ruth L. Jones
Ruth L. Jones died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango while recovering from surgery. She was 83.
Mrs. Jones was born on June 26, 1921, in North Platte, Neb., the daughter of Samuel and Catherine Shaw. At the age of 20, she moved to California and in 1945 married Ray Jones. He preceded her in death. In 1995, she married Merle E. Short.
Mrs. Jones enjoyed traveling, friends and family, relatives said.
She is survived by her former husband and good friend, Merle Short of Durango; two sons, Stan Jones of Floyds Knobs, Ind., and Robert Jones of Hamilton, Mont.; numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Funeral Home Chapel in San Jose, Calif. Contributions may be made to Mercy Health Foundation, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango.
Diane Steuart
Diane Steuart died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, after a long battle with cancer while surrounded by family at her home. She was 60.
Mrs. Steuart was born in Denver on March 18, 1944, to Laura and Franklin Steuart. During the 33 years she lived in Durango, she raised five children here and was employed by City Market for 20 years.
She is survived by three sons, Craig Williams of Ignacio, Zachary Stewart of Phoenix and Martin Stewart of Fort Collins; two daughters, Debbie Stump of Loveland and Kerri Stewart of Galeton Gateway; and a brother, Jere Steuart of Denver.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at New Life Chapel in Durango.
Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
