William N. Michaud
William N. Michaud died Monday, March 21, 2005, at his home in Bayfield. He was 63.
Mr. Michaud was born May 17, 1941, in Fitchburg, Mass., the son of William and Alma Michaud. He was raised in the Fitchburg area and was a graduate of Northeastern University.
Mr. Michaud was a captain in the U.S. Air Force and was a navigator in OV10s and F-111s. He served in Vietnam, receiving many medals.
He married Carolyn in 1998 in the Vallecito Church. He retired at that time and enjoyed traveling and fishing. He was a volunteer with the Colorado Department of Wildlife.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Michelle Michaud.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughters, Amanda Michaud of Albuquerque, N.M., and Julie Carpenter of Denver; sons, Michael Michaud of Las Vegas, Nev., and Darryl Insley; four grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Columba Catholic Church. The Rev. James Koenigsfeld will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today. Burial will occur at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.
William A. Hawkins
William A. Hawkins died on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales, N.M.
Mr. Hawkins was born on July 29, 1920, in Ardmore, Okla., to Eula Pearl and George Washington Hawkins.
He spent his early years on a ranch in Nolan County, Texas, near Sweetwater. While he worked, he would see trains go by and determined he wanted to become an engineer. After Mr. Hawkins graduated from high school, he attended college in Portales. He went to work for the railroad as a fireman in Clovis, N.M. Eventually he became an engineer and then was promoted to road foreman of engineers in northern Arizona.
On July 20, 1940, he married Pearl Fay Stirman in Portales.
Three years later, he was transferred to Gallup. Then, in 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines through World War II. Afterwards, he returned to Gallup where he lived until 1972, when he transferred to Winslow, Ariz.
He and his wife built their retirement home near Durango and moved there in 1982 after Mr. Hawkins' 40-year career with the railroad.
Mr. Hawkins enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family. He was active in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen union. While in Gallup, he and other train employees raised money each year for the March of Dimes by setting up a model train downtown. People put money in the cars for collection.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Alaine Downing and his wife, Pearl Hawkins.
Survivors include his daughter, Nettie Hawkins of Garland, Texas; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Paul T. Hawkins of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and sister Lauranette Mason of Muleshoe, Texas.
A remembrance will be held at noon Saturday, April 2, at Veterans of Foreign War Post 9515 in Portales.
Carl D. Tucker
Carl D. Tucker died at his home in Bayfield on Thursday, March 17, 2005. He was 92.
Mr. Tucker was born April 6, 1912, in Finley, Okla., to Oland and Ara Pearson Tucker. He spent his younger years ranching. When he was 16, he moved his mother and siblings to homestead at Summit Point, Utah.
He married Kathryn Sheckler on Jan. 31, 1933, in Moab, Utah. After their wedding, they ranched and started planning their family. They had four sons and two daughters.
Mr. Tucker worked in the uranium mines in Monticello, Utah, and Meeker. He then worked in the oil-shale mines in Anvil Point, then back to the uranium mines in western Colorado. He retired from mining in December 1960.
He continued ranching in Battlement Mesa. The Tuckers then moved to Glenwood Springs where he continued ranching.
The Tuckers moved to Rifle Creek and then to Paradox.
Mr. and Mrs. Tucker continued ranching in Paradox from 1965 until 1993. They then moved to Bayfield, where Mr. Tucker continued ranching.
Mr. Tucker was a charter member of the Colorado Sheriff's Posse and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Kathryn Tucker; his sister, Mary Jane of Universal City, Texas; two sons, Tommy Tucker of Bayfield and Dave Tucker of Tsegi Canyon, Ariz.; two daughters, Mary Pedersen of Delta and Pat Tucker of Nucla; 19 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Dickie and Bob.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary. A gathering for family and friends will be held after the services at 1894 County Road 523.

Emily Bibbins Gibbs
Emily Bibbins Gibbs died in her home in Poway, Calif., on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005. She was 86.
Mrs. Gibbs, daughter of Lawrence W. and Hazel S. (Casey) Bibbins, was born on June 5, 1918, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
She grew up in Ypsilanti, Mich., and graduated from Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in 1939.
On Sept. 18, 1939, Mrs. Gibbs married Morgan L. Gibbs in Ypsilanti, Mich. They later moved to Ludington, Mich., where they lived until 1944 when they moved to Midland, Mich. They opened the Emily Gibbs Children's Apparel Shop then, and in 1976 Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs retired to Poway, Calif.
Mrs. Gibbs was a loving mother, a partner in the family business, a homemaker and an avid gardener and reader. In California she was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include her son, Richard Gibbs of Durango; daughters, Susan Gresge of St. Charles, Ill., and Laurie Muhn of East Lansing, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Following cremation, her remains were spread in the Pacific Ocean, as were her husband's. Her family will hold a memorial reunion in Poway in April.

Robert E. 'Bob' Luthi
Robert E. "Bob" Luthi of Nevada City, Calif., formerly of Cortez, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in Colfax, Calif. He was 67.
He died after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mr. Luthi was born Oct. 7, 1937, in Bayfield to Emil and Eliza Luthi.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrol in 2003.
Survivors include his son, Rob Luthi of Colfax, Calif.; daughter, Sherri Knight of Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren; brothers, Myron Luthi and David Luthi, both of Cortez; sisters, Mary Imel and Lucille Waterman, both of Cortez; and many other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in California.

Novella M. Loether
Novella M. Loether died Monday, March 14, 2005, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 90.
Mrs. Loether was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Wilmington, Ill., the daughter of Main Alonzo Thompson and Bertha Peterson Thompson. She moved to Fredonia, Kan., with her parents as a child. She grew up in Kansas, and she met her husband Guy Loether at the age of 17. They met during the Depression.
At the time, their collective income was 41 cents per day. They had to save money for seven years before they had enough to marry. Mr. and Mrs. Loether moved to Durango in 1952.
Mrs. Loether enjoyed many activities such as gardening, baking, cooking, needlework and playing the organ. She particularly enjoyed all five of her grandchildren. In her younger years, she rode horseback and was an excellent shot.
Mrs. Loether and her husband enjoyed traveling around the country during their retirement years.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Guy Loether of Durango, daughter, Linda Johnston of Scottsdale, Ariz.; son, Rick Loether of Durango; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Mr. Earl Caudill, the chaplain for the Hospice of Mercy, will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Regina G. Candelaria
Lifetime area resident, Regina G. Candelaria died Monday, March 14, 2005. She was 100.
Mrs. Candelaria was born Jan. 13, 1905, in Pagosa Junction to Aniceto Candelaria and Adela Gallegos Candelaria. She married Manuel "M.C." Candelaria on Jan. 28, 1924, in Rosa, N.M.
Mrs. Candelaria was a housewife and mother. She was a member of the Carmelitas and enjoyed quilting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, M.C. Candelaria; and her son, Faustin Candelaria.
She is survived by her sons, Manuel P. Candelaria of Bloomfield, N.M., Jose L. Candelaria of Arboles and Michael "Bernie" Candelaria of Pagosa Springs; daughters, Delfinia Lucero of Ogden, Utah, Claudine Quintana of Arboles and Angie Candelaria of Grand Junction; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, and Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Both services will be held at the St. Peter/St. Rose Catholic Church in Arboles. The Rev. Carlos Alvarez will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosa Cemetery.
Alma L. Weddle
Alma L. Weddle, a former Bayfield resident, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, in Tulsa, Okla. She was 94.
Mrs. Weddle was born Dec. 8, 1910, in Washington state to Oscar and Alice Goff.
She graduated from Central State College in Edmond, Okla. She taught in the Tulsa public-school system for many years and was also a librarian.
In 1967, she married Dan Weddle. Although they had attended school together in Stroud, Okla., they had lost touch after graduation.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Weddle loved the Rocky Mountains, and Mr. Weddle was a forest ranger. When Mr. Weddle retired, they planned to return to Stroud, but he died before they could. Instead, Mrs. Weddle returned to Tulsa to be near family.
Survivors include sister Edna Gregory of California; nieces and nephews; stepdaughters Connie Harris of Fort Worth, Texas, and Betty Tyrrell of Thornton; and stepson Dan Weddle of Plano, Texas.
Mrs. Weddle was buried beside her husband in Stroud.
Stella V. Montoya
Stella Montoya, a life-long resident of Durango, died peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Sunshine Gardens Country home. She was 92.
Mrs. Montoya was born March 22, 1912, in Durango, where she would live out her years as a homemaker and faithful attendee of Community of Christ Church.
On Oct., 14, 1931, Mrs. Montoya married Raymond Montoya, and the couple enjoyed 70 years of union.
Mrs. Montoya was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Montoya, their daughter Joyce Elvira and their grandson Troy Montoya.
Mrs. Montoya is survived by her sister Della Salazar of Modesto, Calif., and her children Joyce Stevenson of Grand Junction, Fran Fahey of Cleveland, Ohio, John Montoya of Phoenix, Jim Montoya of Durango, 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be missed by friends and family.
A visitation will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hood Mortuary.
Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Hood Mortuary Chapel, officiated by Elder Larry Barnes and Priest Elliott Ott.
Burial will be at Crestview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community of Christ Church or Hospice of Mercy.
