Anna Alice Seavy

Anna Alice Seavy died Monday, May 9, 2005. She was 91.

She was born Sept. 24, 1913, in Pagosa Springs.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomfield High School Auditorium. Everyone is welcome to come and share memories and anecdotes of Mrs. Seavy. Contact phone numbers are (505) 632-2521 or (505) 634-1075.

In lieu of flowers, send donations to the Bloomfield Public Library or the First United Methodist Church in Bloomfield.

Charles Joseph Kalbacher

A former resident of Bayfield, Charles Joseph Kalbacher died Sunday, May 8, 2005, in Austin, Texas, after suffering from Parkinson's disease. He was 84.

He was born on April 5, 1921 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Anna Bardalmas and Charles Kalbacher.

Survivors include his son Don Kalbacher of Austin, Texas; daughter Jean Kalbacher of Mesa, Ariz.; son Dallas Kalbacher of Garden City, Kan.; and two grandsons.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will occur in Austin.

Jose Samuel Luna

Jose Samuel Luna, 83, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at The Valley Inn in Mancos.

Mr. Luna was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Kline, the son of John and Ernestina Luna.

After growing up in Cordova Canyon near Dulce, N.M., Mr. Luna served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In 1946, he married Josephia Luna in Lumberton, N.M. He lived there until the 1960s, when he moved to Durango. The last four years, he lived at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos.

Mr. Luna volunteered at the Manna Soup Kitchen, and he was active in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. "He helped his neighbors," said his brother, Jose Montoya.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his sons Larry and Jose Luna.

Survivors include sons Jose Montoya of Bayfield, Albert Luna of Bayfield, Juan Luna of Bayfield, Tony Luna of Bayfield, and Patrick Luna of Durango; daughters Olivia Sandoval of Aztec, Theresa Hernandez of Durango, Rose Mary Bowen of Colorado Springs, Margie Carbajal of Durango, Robin Luna of Espaņola, N.M.; daughter Irene Luna of Seattle, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate. Burial will follow the Mass at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. A reception will follow the burial at the home of Margie Carbajal: 601 Colorado Highway 172, Durango (259-0797).

Dagmar Marie Slade Zufelt

Dagmar Marie Slade Zufelt, 83, died Monday, May 16, 2005, at her home in Magna, Utah.

Mrs. Zufelt was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Kline, the daughter of Benjamin and Agda (Evensen) Slade. She was the 11th of 15 children.

Mrs. Zufelt grew up and attended school in the Kline area.

When she was 16, she married Robert Leland Zufelt on Aug. 12, 1936, in Kline. She was a cook and baker. She enjoyed canning, quilting and excelled in handicrafts. Mrs. Zufelt served in the temple mission at the St. George Temple in Utah, and she did additional service work in other capacities for her community as well as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Redmesa Ward. Bishop Trent Taylor of the Redmesa Ward will officiate. Burial will occur at Kline Cemetery in Kline.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2003, and her son Gary Zufelt.

Survivors include her daughter Mayona Tippets of Magna, Utah; son Rodney Zufelt of Magna, Utah; son Cary Zufelt of Meridian, Idaho; 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, brothers Marlo Slade, Chester Slade, Lester Slade, Jimmy Slade; sister Mary Fern Evans; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frances Terrill Ulrich

Frances Terrill Ulrich died in Durango on Tuesday, May 17, 2005, after a short illness. She was 94.

Born May 9, 1911, in Mena, Ark., she lived most of her life in Southeast Texas.

Her father worked for the railroad and the family settled in Beaumont, Texas.

After Mrs. Ulrich graduated from South Park Junior College, she worked for Sun Oil.

In 1932, she married Joe Gregg, a rice farmer from Winnie, Texas. After his death, she moved back to Beaumont and lived with her parents and brother. She supported herself by giving piano lessons, traveling to students' homes on the trolley.

In 1947, she married Harold Ulrich, a civil engineer with Texaco in Port Neches, Texas. Together they had a son and daughter. The family moved to Nederland in 1955, and Mrs. Ulrich stayed until 1996.

Mrs. Ulrich was active in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church as a member of the Altar Guild. She enjoyed fashion, and she was also a member of various book clubs and the hospital auxiliary.

The couple traveled in their retirement. Mrs. Ulrich enjoyed group tours to Hawaii, Canada and the western United States, but had difficulty traveling abroad after she threw her passport away because she didn't like her passport picture. She had been born without a birth certificate and found it impossible to obtain a new passport.

In 1989, her son, Steve, an attorney in Houston, died. After the 1995 death of her brother, Raymond Terrill, Mrs. Ulrich moved to Durango to be close to her daughter, Jane.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane Ulrich of Durango.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Port Neches, Texas, with the Rev. Cliff Rucker officiating. Interment at Oak Bluff Memorial Park will follow.

A celebration of MNrs. Ulrich's life will be held in Durango at a time yet to be determined next month.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to a local public library.

Ernest 'Ernie' Lee Zellner

A former resident of Bayfield, Ernest 'Ernie' Lee Zellner, 57, died of cancer on Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., while surrounded by his family.

Mr. Zellner was born on Aug. 17, 1947, in Spearman, Texas, to Herman D. and Mary (DeGraff) Zellner.

He moved to Bayfield when his father became the Bayfield Town Marshall in 1950. While he attended school in Bayfield, he was active in sports and went by the nickname "Muzzy." In 1964, his team went to the basketball state championship.

Mr. Zellner married Joyce Arthur in 1972 in Del City, Okla. They lived together in Holdenville, Okla., and Mr. Zellner worked as the parts manager for John Gibbs Motor Co. until he retired for health reasons.

His family recalls Mr. Zellner as a loving, gentle man. They said he had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to be surrounded by family.

Survivors include his wife; daughter Gwenda Williams, daughter Katrina Pickett, son Gary Skeen, son Chad Skeen, daughter LaDonna Pinion, son Cory Zellner, all of Holdenville; 16 grandchildren; sisters Linda Daley of Durango, Debbie Clark of Alamosa, Connie Johnson of Pagosa Springs and Margaret Cox of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jozef Kudra

A 22-year resident of Durango, Jozef Kudra of died of Alzheimer's disease on Monday, May 16, 2005, at The Valley Inn in Mancos. He was 80.

Mr. Kudra was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Katowicz, Poland, the son of Edward and Maria Zomairlik Kudra. He married Isobel Angus on May 21, 1949, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He was an accomplished cabinet maker, both in New Orleans and Durango.

Survivors include his wife Isobel, daughter, Janette Bolian, and granddaughter, Rachel Bolian, all of Durango, and a brother, Felix Kudra of Poland.

A private, family service of Christian burial will be held at Greenmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter, 789 Sherman St., Denver, CO 80203.

Mary Ann Young

Mary Ann Young, 50, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango.

Ms. Young was born March 19, 1955, in Phoenix, the daughter of Earl C. and Betty Cherry Young.

Ms. Young was employed at the old Community Hospital as an X-ray technician and a medical transcriptionist; then as a medical transcriptionist at Mercy Medical Center. She served the Durango medical field for almost 28 years.

Ms. Young's passions were her love of small children and animals.

Survivors include her father and mother, Earl and Betty; a sister, Linda Lammon; numerous aunts and uncles, and two nephews. All survivors live in Mt. Vernon, Wash.

A private, family memorial service will be held, with burial in Greenmount Cemetery, Durango. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Mercy Project c/o Mercy Health Foundation, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Nancy Lou Sperry

Longtime Delta resident, Nancy Sperry died at her home on Tuesday, May 10, 2005. She was 55.

Mrs. Sperry was born on Nov. 26, 1949, in Winfield, Kan., to Billy Loren Ledgerwood, Sr. and Barbara Joanne (Brown).

She spent her childhood in Winfield. She graduated from Evergreen High School in Evergreen, and attended Colorado State University and graduated in 1971.

On Dec. 8, 1970, she married Joseph Sperry in Fort Collins.

Mrs. Sperry was a ski instructor for the Powderhorn Ski Resort. She taught until February 2005.

She was religious and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of Cedaredge Assembly of God.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Sperry of Delta; mother Barbara Ledgerwood of Durango; son Vaughn Sperry of Aurora; daughter Renee Deal of Eckert; brother Billy Ledgerwood, Jr. of Augusta, Kan., and sister Julie McCallister of Durango; and three grandchildren.

No funeral services are planned at this time.

Kelley Gwen Kole Aarvold

A woman who loved helping others, Kelley Gwen Kole Aarvold died May 8, 2005, at her home in Durango. The cause of death is undetermined. She was 36.

Mrs. Aarvold was born Oct. 31, 1968, to Kraig and Lavon Schaaf Kole in Denver. She grew up in Durango, Denver and Phoenix, attending Durango High School and eventually attaining her GED in Denver. She had lived in Durango for the past 23 years.

She married Michael Aarvold on Dec. 6, 1991, at the home of her uncle Philip Kole in Denver.

Mrs. Aarvold worked at various places around the area, including Mercy Medical Center, Durango Orthopedics and the Fish Connection. Her most recent job was with Community Connections helping developmentally disabled adults integrate into the community. Her family said she found her calling with Community Connections because of her empathic nature and desire to help.

In addition to spending time with her family, Mrs. Aarvold loved music, an interest she shared with her late father. She was a drummer.

"She had an undying love for her family, both immediate and extended, which was the center and core of her being," said her aunt Tammy Schreiner.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Aarvold of Durango; daughters Ashley Aarvold, 13, and Kourtney Aarvold, 9, both of Durango; mother Lavon Schaaf of Durango; grandparents Peryl and Ernie Schaaf of Durango; uncles Wayne Schaaf of Cortez and Jace Kole of Denver; aunts Sherri Waggoner and Tammy Schreiner, both of Durango; and numerous cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Durango, 2917 Aspen Drive. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church.

In lieu of flowers, the fami ly requests that donations be made to the Ashley and Kourtney Aarvold College Scholarship Fund at Southwest Federal Credit Union.
